The writing was expressive, the characters engaging, and the plot entertaining.

Of course, working so closely with a rich, handsome man can create a whole new set of problems. Can Lady Alice obtain her dream? And if so, at what price.

"...he acted as he had seen so much more of life than his thirty-three years. An old soul, someone had once called people like that. People who understood the world and quickly mastered it."

There are some grammatical errors, spelling errors, and era inconsistencies that should easily have been discovered with a dedicated proofreader.

This is compelling, stand-alone Regency book that provides a H.E.A. and an epilogue that satisfies.

This book includes steamy chemistry based on the Regency era. Their intimacy was mildly descriptive, but not vulgar,. So, those offended by such will want to avoid it.

I read straight after the first one and it seemed a bit repetitive. I still liked it :)

This book could have been good. The story started with an interesting premise, but the main characters were flat and, frankly, rather stupid. In the beginning, there is a scene in which the hero is amused and questions why the heroine does not want to be seen going to his house, alone, late at night. In a Regency setting? Come on. He’s either terminally stupid or the author didn’t do her research. Added to this is the fact that the hero is taking her to his house again her wishes, and she has clearly told him she does not want to go there with him. Ick. She changes her mind, but still.... he was going to force her to go there anyway. I prefer my heroes to not abduct women.

However, what set the book in the one star range (instead of two) was the terrible editing. A sentence fragment every now and then for style or emphasis is fine. This book was littered with them to the point that it was distracting from the story itself.

I would not recommend this book and I will not seek out other books by this author.

I might have given this two stars because the story itself could have been original enough to matter but the lack of editing was too painful. By the end, it was infuriating. Even spellcheck won't tell you if you've used the wrong homonyms. You have to KNOW how to spell! As it the embarrassing spelling goofs weren't bad enough, the punctuation was worse. Such a mishmash of sentence fragments and apostrophe abuse...

Also, what seemed like a well-considered plot and character development at the beginning quickly fell apart as people slumped into trite reruns of every other simpering romance character--incapable of thinking straight once the hormones kicked in. Even the premise of Olivia's season fizzled, and the sparks between her and Nathaniel's friend (clearly the only man she had chemistry with) was left hanging.

Try again, and this time PAY A FUCKING EDITOR. Virtually every aspect of what's supposed to be the writer's craft was an embarrassment here.

Take or hero

Nathaniel Caldwell vowed never to fall in love. He was going to be a confirmed bachelor. He was so sure that he made a bet that he would not be the next to marry. Alice Weston and her mother had been put out of their home by her cousin when Alice broke off her engagement to Lord Brookstone two days before the wedding. He left them with nothing. Nathan needed someone to guide his sister, Olivia, as she entered her season in search of a husband. When he saw Alice and heard her story he knew that she was the perfect person to guide his sister. She and her mother moved into his home and instructed Olivia , who the ton fell in love with. What happened to them is the basis of this story. I don't want to spoil it for you but this is a story well worth reading

Did the author dictate this and fail to proofread?

The story isn't particularly original and there is no pretense at witty dialogue, but the heroine and hero are likable enough characters. I've grown accustomed to reading "Recency" romances where the author is too uncomfortable to attempt period appropriate vernacular, but this author has sunk to a new low when it comes to grammar. Incomplete sentences abound. What should be one sentence is broken down into three sentences, not one of which is a complete thought. This occurs so frequently that one can only assume this was a first draft which escaped editing or an unfortunate stylistic affectation.

It's not a bad book, there's just nothing to commend it.

Love between two different classes

After Lady Alice Weston's father dies, her cousin is the new heir. She refuses to marry the man he chooses and she and her mother are forced to find other living arrangements. They have virtually no money and she needs a job to support them. Mr. Nathan Caldwell has a sister he needs to launch into the town and needs someone who has access to the town. He offers the job to Alice and she accepts. She and her mother move into his home and the launch is on.

I did not like the mother. She was a snob and didn't like Nathan because of his class.

I would recommend this book.

Nathanial is a commoner. His sister wants a London season, but he had no idea how to go on in society. He asks his friends to recommend someone to help his sister. His friends recommend Lady Alice. He arranges to meet her at a ball. She had been engaged but broke it off two days before the wedding. Her cousin angry at her tossed her and her mother out and refused to support them. Now she is thinking she must become some mans mistress in order to continue eating. So when this rich man asks to speak to her she thinks that is what he wants. It is a rather slow moving book and hops over details that could have added depth but it is a pleasant read.

An interesting take on Regency romances, a rich commoner who falls in love with a Lady. She has been disgraced, and he tries to help her. My favorite part was when Nathaniel, our hero, meets with Rothschild, who he has a lot in common with, and feels like an outcast as a Jew does. Insightful and informative, as Nathaniel has a dark side as he sets out to ruin the Lord who hurt the woman he loves. I will now find the 1st and 3rd books in the series.

A wonderfully romantic story

I loved this story of Alice and Nathaniel. G.L. Snodgrass is an amazing storyteller and her characters come alive on the page. I'm so happy that I found this author and look forward to reading all her books. She's a five star author and her books reflect that.

Navigating the seas and the Ton.

An adventure love story about two people from two different worlds. The plot keeps readers waiting for the next twist in the story. Characters are fresh and exciting. Dialog is fresh as well and at times unexpected. Good book for historical romance readers.

Charming a Rake

I found this to be an enjoyable tale. The premise was good and the plot was well-written. The characters had depth. The romance was hot and exciting. The ending was satisfying. The editing and use of grammar was abysmal. Editor and thesaurus please.

A very enjoyable book

Great characters, good plot, good pace, and enough suspense to make it interesting. The only problem was the existence of a few misspelled words that you wouldn't expect from a writer of this caliber.

This was a good story. However, the book itself needed a proofreader and an editor. The word "adversary" was used instead of "advisory". Sometimes the character was Olivia, sometimes she was Olive. Sometimes words were left out. I think this book would be a 4 star at least with corrections.

Lady and the seaman

After her cousin refused to honor his obligation to provide for Alice and her mother, they are barely making ends meet. Nathan's request to sponsor his sister is a welcome relief. Now they just need to assure there is no scandal to protect is sister.

Fun Regency

We'll developed characters. Cute plot. Fun read. The general situation is a bit unrealistic, but fun nonetheless. You will expect the sudden change in the man's attitude towards women as in a great deal of romance novels.

DNF. I got about halfway through the book, really giving it a try but gave up. The characters are frustrating. After an intense night of passion, the dude leaves (business) and she’s consumed with of he’s still attracted to her (their time apart: like a week).

My first Regency romance. Very well written, with none of the bodice ripping I was expecting. There is inconsistancy in the description of the leading lady's hair color, first blond, then black, next auburn. Despite these inconsistencies on the editors part the story was highly enjoyable.

Alice can't believe her luck when Nathaniel asks her to guide his sister through her first season. Alice is a fun character who knows what she wants and is determined to get it. The secrets Nathaniel has and plans he concocts continue to surprise and astonish. I definitely enjoyed this story!

This book was so good. I read the first one back in 2016 and few other of her books but for some reason didn't follow up with the others. So glad I came back and ordered all her remaining books. Really loved this book and the characters were awesome.

A take does have some fine qualities!

I loved Nathaniel and Alice's love story. A self made man and a down on her luck Lady of the Ton could not be a match made in heaven. Their fight to find each other shows us how wonderful love can be when it comes out of the blue.Enjoy!

I encourage the author to add more historic-political detail to enrich the story. This series is loosely linked by the heroes being friends. Can be read in any order. Much higher audiobook production quality than those of Snodgrass's books published a few years ago.
