Serve and Protect

Rate this book
She’s hiding from memories that could tear her apart. He knows getting her to face her past is the key to the most important murder investigation he’ll ever handle.

Ashley Walker was one of the lucky ones. Adopted when she was fourteen years old by a family who loved her as their own and stuck beside her through all she put them through. She can’t outrun the hell of her past, though. A hell that would haunt her forever.

Garret Hensley never imagined he'd be chasing the killer of the woman who'd set him on the path to law enforcement. She'd given him reason to believe in himself, to believe he could make a difference. And he suspected her giving heart was the reason her life had been cut so short. When the evidence leads him to Ashley Walker, he knows he has to ignore the feelings she stirs in him, because getting her to reveal the truth of her past is the key to finding a killer.

Serve and Protect was previously published under the same title but with a different publisher. Please check your ereader to be sure you haven't already purchased it! It is book three in the series, but it is a stand-alone complete story and can be ready in any order within the series.

In Serve and Protect by Lori Ryan, when a loved social worker is murdered, police detective Garrett is assigned to her case. Unknown to his supervisor, Alice the social worker played a vital role in his life, and he is now determined to get justice for her. Ashley is a woman who has buried her past and tried her hardest to keep it in the darkest corner of her mind. Her life was changed thanks to Alice, and Alice's death rocks the walls she's built. Garrett and Ashley cross paths frequently, in part because Garrett is sure Ashley knows more than she's telling...and in part because he is so drawn to her as a woman he can't stay away. Has the past come back to haunt them? Can Garrett hunt down a killer and maintain the blurry line between personal and professional with Ashley?

The farther into Serve and Protect I read, the more I felt part of the story. Garrett and Ashley really came to life as I got to know them. I felt for both of them, for what they had each been through, where they are today, and the struggles and conflicts Ashley in particular is facing. Ashley's story is heart breaking, and the guilt she harbors weights heavily on her. Garrett seems to be perfect for her. I liked the connection between them. They both feel it. Trust is slow to build, and I liked how Garrett didn't rush Ashley about anything, whether regarding the case, their blossoming relationship, or her past. He just seemed to get her. Lori develops these main characters and their stories very well and sensitively. I never would have guessed what had happened! It works well with the story, it's believable, and it's sad. I was glad that Ashely had such strong support from her family and from Garrett.

The mystery of Serve and Protect also took unexpected turns, and this kept things edgy and mysterious. The romance and suspense in Serve and Protect is a good mix and balances each other out very well. I couldn't wait to see what happened with each part of the plot, and was intrigued through out!

Not only are the main characters strong, but the supporting secondary characters are just as strong. They felt like people I'd want to have around me in good times and bad.

Serve and Protect is part of Lori Ryan's Heroes of Evers, Texas series, but is a powerful stand alone book. With evil vs good, along with love, hope and relationship building, the pace of this book flows well and was easy to lose myself in. I'd recommend Serve and Protect to any romance reader who likes some mystery/suspense and hard, real life issues thrown in.

You can read more of my reviews at my blog The Book Chick.

I feel like Ryan's style of writing is very up and down. There is really no stability you can trust and lean on. Which is too bad because the plots are usually great and exciting. The first book in this standalone series I gave two stars. I don't have a public review and on top of my mind I can't remember exactly what my problem with it was. But I think it was the writing and the way the story was built. The second book I gave four stars. No public review here either, but this one I do remember. The plot was great, exciting and the characters fantastic. The book felt more alive and I really liked it. Made me think Ryan maybe was an author for me and after this one I felt that I wanted to continue the series.

This third one I give a three star rating. It started out great but it kind of flatted out in the middle and the end was just predictable and cliché. The writing got worse and it lost me and my attention. The book in its entirety is good. I liked it. I liked that it was somewhat darker and that the love/sex not was the big focus here. Not a WOW book but it is not as bad to give reason for a lower rating either.

I don't think Ryan is an author for me. It doesn't mean necessary that she is a bad writer. She just doesn't do it for me and my standards. And I'm quite happy that this one was the last one in the series. Well there is one 0,5 book but I don't like to read half books and often ignores them. So I do not feel an compelling to continue reading.

Don't know if I will read anything more buy Ryan. Time will tell.

Serve and Protect is book 3 in Lori Ryan's Heroes of Evers, Texas series. All the books in the series take place in the same town—Evers, Texas—and while some of the characters from previous books may make cameo appearances, each book stands on it's own. You don't have to have read the previous books to understand what's going on in the story.

I have read the other two books and I have to say I think this one is my favorite so far. There are some very dark things that happened in the heroine's past when she was a girl in foster care, so be forewarned if that kind of thing bothers you. Ashley Walker grew up in foster care but thanks to being adopted by a loving supporting family she overcame her past and is now the head librarian in town and a best selling author as well.

Garret Hensley is a police detective investigating a murder in her town. He meets Ashley and the attraction between the two of them is strong. I liked both the main characters and was quickly drawn into the story and became invested in the outcome.

I'd give Serve and Protect 4 stars and would recommend it to readers of contemporary romance, especially those that like a investigation/law enforcement tone to their stories.

I received an ARC from the author in return for my honest review.

The only thing I that interested me about this 3rd story was Evie. Ashley & Garrett didn't grab my interest.

4.5 Stars. This times the heroes are Ashley and Garret. Garett, a detective, meets Ashley while working a murder case. He is immediately attracted to her. Unlike so many other books, he actually ask her out on a date. (No one seems to date anymore. They just find their way to the bedroom.) Garett knows Ashley is someone very special and he wants to get things right with her. He is attracted to her and willing to be patient with her.
Garett knows Ashley’s past will lead to answers in his current case. Just how far will he push her? If she has to face her awful days in foster care, will she emerge a different person— a broken woman?
Once again, the author balances the suspense and the romance for a strong storyline. This book touches on some very sensitive matters and does such with respect.

Heroes of Evers, Texas series

Just read the third book in the series. Great books with drama and a sweet love story with sexy times!! Third book had mention of prior molestation and death of an infant. All have things that could be triggers although not graphic.

Awesome read! Garret is a police detective that ends up investigating the death of a social worker named Alice. Alice lived down the hallway from Garret when he was growing up & helped make him the man he is. Ashley is a former foster child who has been adopted. Garret thinks she has the clues he needs to solve Alice's murder. He just doesn't realize what all she has attempted to put behind her.

This book pulled me in from the beginning & took my emotions on a ride. Ashley's story is heartbreaking & Garret's isn't a nice safe ride either. The plot is full of twists & turns that keep you intensely interested. The characters are amazing & their mannerisms & descriptions are so life like. This is a tremendous story about the journey of two damaged people & the path they take to find themselves together & whole again. I started this thinking I'd read a chapter or two before bed. A couple of hours later, I finally put it down when I saw "The End"!

I was given an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest opinion.

Garret is gutted when he has to investigate the murder of a woman who made such a huge difference in his life. Alice was a social worker who put the kids first and she did not deserve the brutal end that she met. Now Ashley may have the clue he needs to solve Alice's murder. Unfortunately Ashley has a few hidden secrets of her own. An abusive childhood that she has buried and refuses to deal with. Can Garret get her to face her past and still make a future for the two of them?
An absolutely awesome new read from Lori. I don't know how she does it, but her characters find a way to worm themselves into your mind. You sit up at night wishing you had finished the book rather than switching off the lights at a decent hour and then wondering what happens next! I received an advance copy of the book from the author for an honest review. I honestly feel this series is even better than Sutton Capital one.

Quick romance, though the content was anything but standard. The h had quite a difficult life and it was hard to read but also didn't get into too much detail to take away from the romance. The book didn't develop exactly like I had anticipated which was good. It kept me guessing.
I wished for more interaction between the h and the H as weeks passed with them getting to know each other, I wanted to experience more of that time.
Also, I would have thought that she would have made it harder for him when he wanted to take a role in her life.
Overall, it was enjoyable and light enough to be a nice uplifting story with a happy ending.

This was the first book I've read by Lori and won't be the last. I enjoyed reading Ashley and Garrett's story. Romance with a bit of suspense makes for a good read.

Ashley Walker is an amazing character. It is remarkable that she survived her time in foster care and came to find the Walker family. It wasn't easy for any of them but she grew up to be a caring, kind, woman that has a secret writing career. She was lucky in so many ways but her past is something that she wanted to keep locked up.

Garret Hensley and Ashley Walker are about to collide in a case that brings it all home for Ashely. Garret recognizes the look of a foster care kid in her and he knows she holds deep secrets. He has to be strong for her and find justice for a murder victim close to his heart.

Ms. Ryan's story is powerful and sad but also full of hope. She doesn't put a bandage on Ashely's feelings as her story comes out. She lets her go through all of the emotions you would expect a person to go through when her past collides with her present and people find out what happened all those years ago. There is evil in this story and the villain gets what he deserves. Love is blind sometimes and we are so desperate to be loved that we will do anything to keep the illusion of love. Ms. Ryan writes about that with fine attention to detail. I look forward to the rest of the series and I hope all the Walker's get a story.

When outrageously irreverent, carelessly outspoken and loyal friend Ashley Walker stops to visit, Alice, her social worker from years ago and meets Detective Garret Hensley. They’re both rocked by Alice’s murder. Alice that guided Garret as a youngster, he’d bent rules to ensure he worked Alice’s case. Ashley’s foundation is shattered by nightmares, memories, shame and fear.

Unaware of how deeply Alice’s death has affected either of them, Garret is interested in Ashley and tries to start a relationship with her and keep the case separate at the same time. Ashley’s past haunts her too much for her to respond. Meanwhile, the town discovers their very modern librarian, Ashley also writes steamy romantic suspense novels. Ashley also picks up a terrorizer for some reason.

This moving and very readable tale does give a happy ending because sometimes that’s what you get but it also wends through the complicated long-lasting effects and issues that abuse can cause.

A great story

**This story may not be suitable for all readers. It talks about child abuse in the foster care system.**

A library is a wonderful place. And getting that library card meant losing yourself in a world of fantasy and make-believe. A world where anything was possible. A world where none of the realities of your life could touch you. This is a story full of mystery and intrigue. It will definitely pull on your heart strings.

Ashley was the local librarian, she was also a well known author, well, her family doesn’t know, but she’s still we’ll know to others. She’s also hiding a deep, dark secret.

Garret is a detective in the Branson Falls Criminal Investigations Division. He now finds himself investigating a friends murder. She was one of the nicest, most helpful human beings he has ever know. And now he must protect one of her kids from a deranged woman.

I purchased a copy of the steamy romantic suspense novel Serve and Protect: A Small Town, High Stakes Romance (Heroes of Evers, TX Book 3) Ashley and Garrett by Lori Ryan and this review was given freely.
Haunting, suspenseful, action packed, emotional and intense with the dark themes of revenge, jealousy, mental illness, murder, suicide, and a pedophile, this novel is full of violence but also contains a happy ending. As the anniversary of her adoption by the Walkers approaches, the unfiltered and outspoken Evers librarian and romance author Ashley Walker reflects on her business successes and happy home life until a call from her childhood social worker, Alice Johnson, triggers her PTSD and plunges her into a murder mystery with Alice’s former neighbor, Branson Falls police detective Garrett.
18+ recommended for steamy scenes and violence.

Amazing! That covers the story written by this author. Having read Books 1 and 2, I somehow overlooked this book when it came out. My error! This is a moving, emotional story-line. I smiled, got tearful and laughed out loud at the events in this book. A librarian with a horrific past, now sits writing sensual books while making the Library a welcome place for all; even the quilting group. Being a small town, there was a Sheriff but it was long miles away for a police office when help was needed. In this book the story vacillates from humor to murder; from kindness to kidnapping; and, from loneliness to finding love. I highly recommend this book for adults as there are several sensual scenes that are well written.

I did not want to finish this book and leave these characters. I was immediately a part of the story of Ashley and fell for Garrett as the hero right away. What a story! Lori Ryan's talent for creating heart stopping stories, both with the romance and the suspense, makes me enjoy every book of hers I've read. This may be a favorite though. I seem to remember thinking that at the end of the last Lori Ryan's book I read. I'm glad I started at the beginning of this series because you get to encounter characters from previous books, just as small town relationships keep everyone in each others business...I mean caring for each other.

GREAT STORY 👍

This was an excellent book! There was some deep heartbreaking moments in this story that brought tears to my eyes. The story was both realistic and heartwarming with a lovely sexy and sweet romance between Garret and Ashley two people who had been through a lot while growing up. The suspense and twists and turns in this book was exciting and scary at times too. The writing was so good that I was on pins and needles and turning the pages fast to get to see what happened next. 😁..... I highly recommend this book.... It had everything you could want in a romantic suspense and once I started reading it I could not put it down!!! 😇

Loved Ashley & Garret.

If you are a survivor of abuse, this maybe a trigger for you. The story portrays enough to let you know what's happening, without being too graphic. However I want to congratulate the author on portraying victims of abuse as strong survivors. As this is exactly as it is. The only downside to the story was how, in previous books Ashley was always there for everyone else. Including the Sheriffs wife. Yet they only came to help at the end, all this crime happening in his town and John is only in the last chapter and where was Katelyn to support her "friend". That was the only but that spoiled it for me.

Ashley Walker is not your typical head librarian. She's has more of a hip, wild child vibe going with a finger on the pulse of her community's needs. She's honest, straightforward, funny and has no filters. Garret Hensley, police detective, works and doesn't do much else. Lately, he's become discontented. He meets Ashley during a homicide in and suddenly his world is filled with color. She's the one to finally give him the break needed to solve the crime but that proves costly to her. All he knows is that he's in love with her and will not let her go ever.

Served and Protect

Served and Protect is an intense story with humor. Ashley Walker is the leading lady and her history is not pretty. This character has been though hell and back but she is a survivor. When her past comes back to haunt her she will have detective Garrett Hensley to lean on. Ashley has shut the door on her past, she has never talked about it but that's all going to change. Garrett will race to save Ashley while she is trying to save herself. This story does have triggers, Ryan storyline is based around a serious ugly topic. Happy Reading!!

Garret and Ashley

This is a fantastic emotional read. I worked in the foster care system for a while and this book brings out the good and bad in the system. It’s heartbreaking and tissues will be needed. Detective Garret Hensley and librarian/writer Ashley Walker had a had childhood but thanks to a dedicated SoCal Worker have grown into amazing adults. When the Social Worker is murdered Ashley’s secrets will need to come out and danger is headed her way. This didn’t take long to read and I really enjoyed it.

ashley is one of the most eccentric characters i’ve ever read and in the best way! she’s down to earth and is so grounded to reality i was quite excited to learn that this book was about her.

it was fun learning more about ashley and her dark past. i love how she was written and how her character unfolded and reacted. she’s got to be one of the strongest women i’ve read about and she chooses to save others in spite of putting herself through more pain. ily ashley

while garret was a wonderful guy and really cherishes ashley, ashley hard carried this book

Brilliant just Brilliant

I absolutely loved this book (Though tbf i've loved every book in this series so far) Considering the tough subjects this one covers, I found it incredibly easy to read, so much so I've read it in one day! The characters just draw you in so much, I've laughed, cried, ranted & raved - I may feel emotionally drained but I can't wait to read the next instalment...

Wow! Action, Action and more Action!

Talk about action packed. This is numero uno! You have a story that has all the elements of an excellent read for the day. You need to grab your drink, a snack, get comfy because once you start this you definitely will not want to put it down. There is a bit of sexual content and along with that you have a murder, a kidnapping, a crazy lady. Maybe an escape. Marvellous characters. I love this series.I'm on to the next one.

AND THEN YOU'RE THINKING, WHY DID I GIVE THAT OTHER BOOK 5 STARS, CUZ THIS IS A 5 STAR STORY. THIS IS THAT BOOK.

Great but not for the faint of heart

There are some heavy issues that are dealt with in this book and they are dealt with as i think they should be out in the open, no victim blaming and the process for the survivor to heal. The author does not shy away from gritty details but does not scandalize either. The love story is still very sexy, lots of heat, romance and fun even with the heavy subject matter

wow. powerful

Garett such a swoon worthy guy. He is truly sweet and genuine. He wanted to solve Alice’s murder the poor woman who cared for him. Who also has a connection to Ashley. They had a connection from the start bus was slow and simmering and considering her last props to her and her survival skills. Wow. And how amazing he was while she healed and accepted what she had no fault in. Loved it.

I do not understand this trend toward shorter books. I gave this 3 stars because the book should have been 3 times as long and I probably would've given it 5 stars! I really liked the characters, the plot was super interesting, and the deep, super real backstory given to the heroine was unexpected but really well handled. But, none of those thing had enough time to develop in fewer than 200 pages. There should have been so much more of this story!
