The Deputy's Unexpected Family a Comfort Creek Lawmen #3 series by Patricia Johns. Harper Kemp own Blessing Bridal shop. Someone broke in and stole a lot of items. Deputy Gabe Banks showed up to take the report. Gabe and Harper know each other from when they were kids. Harper has custody of Gabe's four year old little girl, that Gabe doesn't know is his. Gabe is in town for two weeks for training. He talked back to his boss where Gabe now lives. Gabe has a lot of issues he is dealing with. Then Harper tells Gabe that her daughter, Zoey is his daughter. Now Gabe has that to deal with plus the break in at Blessing Bridal Shop. Gabe and Harper are attracted to each other. Gabe doesn't want a wife and daughter. But when Harper is hiding in her building when robbers break in again. Gabe is upset and tells Harper he loves her. A very touching and romantic story. A good read.
Right from the beginning this story starts off kind of intense. Harper owns a bridal shop in the small town of Comfort Creek. Her shop was just robbed. Who's the cop who comes in first to her shop but Officer Gabe Banks. Gabe grew up in the town but then left. Now he's back for 2 weeks. He helps Harper with the robbery, doing everything he can to catch the bad guys. To top it all off, he receives some very unexpected news. But because of his sad upbringing, he feels he is not capable of giving love. He had no father and no real mother growing up so he doesn't feel he is up to being a father. But as time goes on, faith restores him and he realizes his feelings and learns to give and receive love. Great story with a wonderful ending.
I loved this book, Patricia Johns never disappoints in her writing. I could feel the leaves crunching under my feet as feel the cool fall air (not the hot and humid July). I felt like I was right there with Harper and Zoey as Gabe raked the front yard and see Zoey's excitement as her daddy put leaves in a pile for her. I laughed as Harper told Zoey she could not "arrest" her friends at pre school with her handcuffs. This book was full of love, frustration, joy and some sadness.
I'm giving this mediocre book the benefit of the doubt with 2 stars. I don't generally read pocket paperback romances, but this one focused on a bridal shop owner and a cop who came to investigate a break in at her shop. The story was a romance rather than a mystery, as the bad guys were eventually caught with no explanation, details, suspense. This was a Christian romance, though I did not find it overly preachy.
This was a clean romance with strong Christian values which were clearly expressed. Gabe's character had been severely impacted by his harsh custodial grandmother and he needed Harper's help to grow into the role of father. This was a pleasant read with no real emotional highs or lows. I don't know if I'll look for other books by Ms. Johns
A really enjoyable plot, with plenty of twists and turns.Mystery, suspense and thrills and let's not forget the romance.I'll be looking forward to seeing more from this author.
