Almost satisfied with the book , one of the best read of 2018.
Readers can feel the effort that the author has kept in the story writing, the entire story is a beautiful result of author's research . I just felt a slight disappointment at the ending where its not that clear about how "सामली" survives after she reaches KTM.
However, this book is worth reading and thanks to author for introducing the "वादी" group and their situation .

I was quite excited firstly to read about Badi community. Saraswoti's effort on research part is applauding and the story-line is moving. The use of local language makes us nearer to the character. But, the way she present them is cliche. I found the alliteration within the sentence structure quite boring. And, the middle part is a bit slow.

Nathiya depicts the lifestyle of the so called "low caste" / "pani na chalne jaat" of Nepal called the Wadi community. Primarily their ancestors were said to be known as musical entertainers but as time progressed the women had to sought prostitution to redeem their livelihoods. This is a story about Shamli Wadi. And through her perspective the author has narrated the cruelty and hardships of the said lifestyle.

As a female myself this book wasn't easy to read. The writing is powerful and so is the story. In very simple words you feel all that the author wants you to feel- anger, hatred, helplessness, sadness, love and sacrifice. Shamli as a character was a symbol of strength and basically she symbolized what it means to be a female in any society. The author shows how in the past the people used to be hippocrites, how they discriminated towards the so called low caste people and yet didn't think twice to bed them, how prostitutes are treated even today. I can't love a story this painful but the ending had me in tears.

The research part was worth applauding. I was very hopeful from the beginning. However the essay like topic within the fiction didn’t please me much. The middle was a bit slow. It is praiseworthy that she included local language is the book, however the debate on whether the language was correctly used was under discussion and hopefully the glitches are fixed in next version.
I would call it a fine read :)

समग्रमा हेर्दा नाथिया एउटा बिन्दु बाट बग्न शुरु गरेर बहुआयामिक धारहरु अंगालेर अन्त्यमा गहिरो समुद्रमा परिणत हुने एउटा नदि जस्तै छ । जसरी नदीले आफ्ना हरेक किनाराहरुको कहानी बोकेको हुन्छ , नाथियाले पनि आफु संग सम्बन्धित सबै कहानीहरु बोकेको छ । हरेक पात्रहरुको जीवन्त तस्विर प्रस्तुत गरेको छ । हरेक भावना, सोच, घटनाहरुको जीवन्त तस्विर प्रस्तुत गरेको छ । यो उपन्यासको लागि उपन्यासकारलाई धेरै धेरै धन्यावाद ।।

आख्यानहरु जुनसुकै भाषा र बिषयमा भए पनि पुस्तकको रुपमा बाजारमा आई सके पछि त्यो एउटा अभिलेख हुन जान्छ । हामीले पचास / सयबर्ष अघि लेखिएका बिभिन्न लेखकका किताब पढिकन त्यो बेलाको समाजको आकलन गरेका हुन्छौ, त्यो बेलाको रहनसहन बुझ्ने सानो मद्दत पाएका हुन्छौ । चलनचल्तीका भाषामा प्रयोग हुने अँग्रेजी लगायतका अन्य भाषिक शब्दहरु भन्दा पनि त्यसको उचित उच्चारण र शब्दार्थका आफ्नै भाषाको प्रयोग गरि आगुम पुस्तालाई आख्यानको रुपमा एउटा शब्दकोश पनि उपहारमा दिइ रहेका हुन्छौ । हाम्रो मौलिक शब्दहरु आगुम अनेकौ दशक वा शताब्दी सम्म सँगाल्न एक प्रकारले सहयोग गरिरहेका हुन्छौ । तर अचेलका नाम चलेका लेखकहरुमा समेत त्यो चेत छैन, पाईदैन । यस किताबमा पनि पाईएन ।

कथामा राम्रो पकड भएता पनि स्थानिय भाषाको अत्यधिक प्रयोगले पढन/बुझ्न असजिलो । फ्रेञ्च, स्पेनिस मुल किताबका अँग्रेजी संस्करणमा पनि कथाको औपचारिकताको लागि फ्रेञ्च, स्पेनिसका वाक्यहरु लेखिए पनि हालको पाठकहरुको लागि बुझ्ने गरि अनुवाद गरिएको हुन्छ । त्यो चेत लेखक / प्रकाशकमा पाईएन ।

संभवत: हाम्रो उमेर ढल्किएर हामी नया जमानाका बोलचालमा समायोजन हुन नसकेको कारण पनि हुन सक्छ । हाम्रो बुझाईमा हामी जुन शब्द/भाषा घरमा आमा बुवा, दिदी बहिनी, दाई भाई, छोरा छोरी वा इष्टमित्रको अगाडी ढुक्कले बोल्न लाज मान्छौ त्यो शब्द लेखकले कथा ��िष्लेशन वा बिबेचना गर्दा प्रयोग गरिदा अवास्तविक देखिन्छ । पात्रको संवादमा आबश्यकता अनुसारका कडा शब्द पनि पाठकले पचाउछन तर बक्ताले त्यही भाषा प्रयोग गर्दा आफ्नो स्तर तल गई रहेको हुन्छ । पाठकले लेखकलाई सम्मान गर्ने दृष्टीकोणमा ह्रास आईरहेको हुन्छ । बुनेका कथा उध्रिदै जान्छ, कथाका परिकल्पना निराधार हुन जान्छ ।
अन्तिममा लेखकले दिएको पुर्वजका संबद्ध संदर्भ भ्रामक र अविश्वास्य जगाउने खालका छन, उल्लेख गरिएको कालहरुमा पनि कुनै समानता छैन ।

किताब छपाएर लाखौ प्रती बेच्ने, किने पछि पाठकले पढने नयाँ कुरा होइन । अचेलका प्रकाशकले गर्ने गर्जनात्मक बिज्ञापणले हामी जस्तो पाठक रनभुल्ल पर्न स्वाभाविक हुन जान्छ । तर पढीसके पछि मैले कसैलाई अनुशंसा गर्न आबश्यक ठानिन र हाम्रो संचलयमा प्रेमपुर्वक संग्रह गरेर राखिन भने यस्तो पुस्तकको केहि औचित्य छैन । प्रकाशन भएको नभएको कुनै मतलब हुदैन । मैले यो पुस्तक किनेर खेर फालेको पैसा र पढेर खेर फालेको समय अरुको लागि सुभिता हुन पुगेको खण्डमा मैले लेखेको तिन सय पचास शब्दको टिप्पणी यो पुस्तक जस्तै खेर जाँदैन ।

उनमा प्रसस्त संभावना र उनका संसर्गमा अपार क्षमता भएको आभाष चैं पक्कै हुन्छ ।

Struggle of badi woman

This book was really interesting, why? because of two reasons: first, the book itself is a page-turner, and second, after a very long time, I finished a book in a day.

This book reveals a Nepali commnuinty where 'baadi' people survive, what they do for survival and, how much they want to change their lives and their next generation, yet our society, law and other reasons hinder them from the change. Perhaps it was fiction yet the information, research and use of local language made it ‘a masterpiece’. Also, I find the reason behind putting on 'nathiya' interesting as well as displeasing at the same time. I had heard a little about Badi community and this book gave a different perspective towards them. I felt the later part of the story ended with a little rush otherwise, its a good book with an intriguing topic and even better story :))) happyreading

I am totally satisfied with the book. It was smooth, a bit slow in the middle but overall it was a good read. The author has worked hard on her research to write the book and introduce the badi community to the readers. It portrays the struggle for existence of the marginalized group and how they are discriminated by the society.

The book is based on the story of Samali whose life is just like a roller coaster ride. Rising and falling events are multiple in her life. Does Samali overcome the obstacles to achieve true love? Sadly, it seems impossible.
Nevertheless, I really appreciate to the Author of the book Sarswoti Pratikchhya for her great effort to rise the voice of Badi community.

यो उपन्यास वादी महिलाहरुको जीवन भोगाई, बुझाई सँग सम्बन्धित छ । यो उपन्याश हो परिस्थितिले गर्दा वेश्या हुनुपरेको “सामली”को र साथै अरु वेश्याहरुको जीवनको भोगाई पनि व्यक्त गरेको कथा। वादीमा जन्मिने छोरीहरुलाई कमाउने भाँडो भनेर हेर्दो रहेछ। वेश्याहरुलाई हाम्रो समाजमा पानी नछुने जात भनेर हेला गर्छ, पुरुषहरुले माल भनेर हेर्छ, कतिले मान्छे भनेर पनि गन्दैन, उनीहरुको पनि भावना हुन्छ मन हुन्छ भनेर कोस्ले सोचोस्? एउटा वेश्या स्वास्नी बन्न सक्छ, आमा पनि हुन् सक्छ, उनीहरु पनि माया चाहनछन् उनीहरुको जीवनमा। यो उपन्यासमा एउटा माहिलाको जीवन भोगाई प्रष्ट सँग बुझाएको छ। कति भागहरु त पढ्न पनि गारो भो मलाई, त्यो परिस्थिति पढ्दा मननै खिन्न हुने। सामलीले आफ्नो परिवारको लागि गरेको त्याग, असल पत्नी हुन खोज्दा भोगेको अप्मान, उसको हिमत र बल ; उसले हरेक परिस्थितिलाई हार नमानी भोग्दा र अहंकारी पुरुषहरु बिरूद्ध उनको लडाईमा म उनको लागि एकदम उत्साहित भएको थिए । यो कथा पकैनै एउटा उत्कृष्ट नमुना थियो।

"यइ समाजले हामीलाई वेश्या भनीकन थुक्दोछ, गाली गर्दोछ, घृणा गर्दोछ। तर, वेश्याको काम चोदिकन अर्को कुनै काम गर्नबटि हाम्लाई ब‌‌‍‍‍‌‍ञ्चित गरीकन किन यइ धन्दामै धकेल्दोछ फेरी ?"

Was about to rate it 3, but decided that it would be unjust.
I have seen complains of being uneasy to read because of the use of local language, people finding the middle portion of the book boring and complaining about its ending a lot. But non these concerned me. I even think that the ending was as it should have been.
My complain is that the book sometimes felt like an essay. A compilation of description. Hats off to the author for her deep research, but the story line felt a bit broken sometimes in their transitions. Felt like the author was in a hurry to give it a transition at some places.
Despite all this.. this book was a wonderful experience for me. I had planned to read this book since a long ago after i had worked in the forest behind a baadi village in kailaili, near lamki and finally got to read it after a friend gifted it to me.
Not only did it give me an insight on the life of a women who is a sex worker, a prostitute by birth but also, it helped me to know the importance of love in ones life. Though the book merely circulates around the love between the main characters, but each plot of the book helps us to know the essence of love. And through all these, we get an insight on the life of baadi people.. the traditional sex workers caste and community of Nepal.
It was a good read indeed.

"Nathiya" tells the story of the Waadi community, often regarded as a lower caste. The main character, Saamli, and those around her portray the community's struggles, including their highs, lows, and sufferings. I was unaware that prostitution was the primary profession for Waadi women, and surprisingly, they receive support from their husbands, parents, and siblings.

The author has conducted extensive research for this book. It had been on my reading list for a long time, but I always chose other books over it. Consequently, it was always my last choice for reading. Then one day, I picked it up on a whim and regretted not reading it sooner.

It was an excellent read after a long time. I hope the author writes a sequel, as it would undoubtedly be very interesting to read.

मुलाई पन यो उपन्यास राम्रो लाग्दोहो। तुलाई पन राम्रो लागन्याछ। :)

The language used by the Waadi community is like an extra layer of cheese on a pizza.

If you want to learn about the Waadi community, you should read this novel.

तर उपन्यासको प्रस्तुती‚ लेखनशैली एकदम कमजोर छ । विषयप्रसंग सुरुदेखि नै दोहोरिएको हो कि भन्ने लागिरहन्छ । उपन्यास एक वा दुई बसाई मै सकिने खालको छ तर पढ्दै गर्दा यस्तो लागिरह्यो कि ह्या पढ्न छोड्दिन्छु‚ र पनि सरु गरेको किताब सक्काउने लहडले पढि भ्याएँ ।
सरल र सिधा रहेको कथाको प्रस्तुतीकरण फेर्न सकेको वा अन्य प्रयोग गर्न सकेको भए अझ राम्रो हुने थियो ।

I read the book with much expectation as promised by the writer herself and lot other readers. It carries a small story, may be a minute documentation of Badi Community but this itself is insufficient to represent/advocate for the community.
Samali is tried best to portray as a strong protagonist however her weaknesses are rampant in her decision-making.
And because writer intervenes/explains/justifies lot of incidences/accidents, you'll have to pause a while to think what you want to think.

The books provides an inside perspective of Badhi women's lifestyle and Badhi community.
The author has justified social and cultural reasons that forces these women into prostitution. I liked the deep meaning of love and connection conveyed through the main character's monologues. But I felt the author has exploited an otherwise very believable story by inserting many climaxes.

The story is beautiful and realistic. The perspectives of central character is amazing. You have never seen and heard otherside of their story. It's one of the best novel I have read recently. Makes you laugh and cry. Highly recommended..
