Kill or Cure

Rate this book
Kill or Cure is a YA romance-infused sci-fi novel.
It focuses on human relationships in an undead, apocalyptic world.
A girl who will stop at nothing to protect her brother.

In a dystopian world ravaged by infection, society as we know it has fallen to the mouths of the dead. The remaining fragments of civilisation survive in walled compounds, scattered in the depths of the countryside. When her little brother becomes sick with a suspected flu virus, Alyx Silverthorne will do anything to keep Tommy alive.

With limited medical supplies and only herbal alternatives, his prospects of surviving this mystery illness are bleak. But saving Tommy is just the beginning. The infected are not the only monsters that exist in this new world, and human nature can be more destructive than the dead.

In a race against time, Alyx and her best friend Will stop at nothing to protect him, even from the same people that swore to protect them all.

Kill or Cure is a dynamic, multifaceted story of teenage love and gut wrenching loss in a dystopian world.

This book had amazing potential.
It had so many things going for it: an intriguing premise, thrilling action scenes, an emotional and bleak atmosphere, loveable secondary characters, gore, and even a hint of romance between two best friends. I didn't even mind the heroine's sulking or the repetitive writing that much - I was totally engrossed in what was happening.
It would have easily been a 4 star read for me, maybe more, hadn't it been for

Still, the plot was great, as were the quick pace and the majority of the writing. I even found myself shedding a few tears a time or two.
Which is why I'll definitely be reading the sequel.

Reading zombie-apocalypse books is something I am known to do every few years. There is something about how fast-paced and plot-driven they are that gives me the feeling I'm smashing that reading challenge right in the face - much like I would do to a zombie's head. Or at least I hope I would be able to do that and not just sit there wallowing in fear and/or soiling my pants. Yikes!

When Kill or Cure got into my radar, I kept getting ads for this mobile game called State of Survival. I was very happy to be able to participate in my first MTMC book tour and I took it as a sign to both start reading the book and playing the game the exact same night. And that was a marvelous idea!

Getting into the book, I felt a bit confused about the year everything was taking place. I could only assume it was close to our time since guns and medical research were being mentioned. The year does get mentioned later in the book, as well as some hints about how everything went down and I can only guess the entire timeline of how zombies came to be would be revealed in the sequels. The first book is also very short compared to books 2&3, and I felt that was a minus that could've been filled with more worldbuilding.

Our main character is Alyx, whose younger brother, Tommy, gets infected but somehow survives and doesn't turn into a full-zombie and instead gains some superpowers. For their safety, they are forced to leave their survivor camp behind the walls and venture into the forest in search of medical help, to discover what Tommy has turned into and if it could possibly be the cure for zombieism. Alyx and Tommy are not alone in this dangerous adventure, they are being followed by the uncle who acted for many years as their father after their real parents were killed by zombies, and by Alyx's best friend, Will, who is in love with her.

What I like about zombie stories is how they're more about what becomes of humans when faced with having to survive, how they are reduced to what they actually are deep inside when society norms don't matter anymore. Only the strongest, most cunning and adaptative person can live to see another day.

The writing style is simple, very fast-paced, and you can easily finish the book in a day, in about four hours. The characters are a bit one-dimensional, and I think the love-triangle was unnecessary, but it didn't really bother me. I expected to be a whole lot more zombies, but for a very long time, while camping in the forest, our characters don't have to fight any, so that made me question whether there aren't many zombies since they were killed already or that the population wasn't very dense in that location, to begin with. One character I particularly liked and hope to read more about is a deaf/mute girl they discover in the forest who becomes their ally. I think I would've absolutely loved the story if it were from her perspective, how she could survive on her own despite her inability to hear the danger closing in, using her other senses.

Uncle Joe was another interesting character. He deserted the army and became a wanted man when he decided protecting and raising his niece and nephew was the most important thing in the world. He is a many with many secrets, who knows important people and I was frustrated when he chose to enter the military base, knowing he would be immediately in danger if recognized.

The story uses many tropes and I was skeptical at how the characters always found allies in the key moments. However, I couldn't help but enjoy it and would definitely read the sequels.

I received this book for free from MTMC Tours, Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. You can also find this review at The Reader and the Chef.

Kill or Cure is about a dystopic society where a virus breaks loose and chaos ensues. Alyx and Tommy, two teenagers that lost their parents to the infected (aka zombies) when they were children, were rescued by their uncle Joe and went to live in a secluded/walled compound. Years passed without incidents until Tommy suddenly starts feeling symptoms commonly known of the infected and Alyx, along with her best friend Will, try to do everything to save him while avoiding for anyone to find out. However, it was impossible to keep the secret for long and they set out into the wilderness in search of a new place to live.

First of all, let me say that I particularly loved the family bond and friendships in this story. Starting with uncle Joe, who risked everything to save his niece and nephew after their parents died, as well as Alyx’s love and fierce protection for her little brother. And there is Will who is an exceptional friend from the first page.We also get to meet some good characters such as Winter and Suzie.

When I first started Kill or Cure I thought it was going to be more gorey, but it actually focuses more on how the world is already used to living with the infected and now the most important thing is to find a good place to live. On the other side, the bitter truth that things are not as simple as they are, the abuse of power and the injustices that are making the society fall apart when everyone are simply too tired to care about anything else but survival. We come across two unlikable characters that take advantage of that: Bobby and General Sinter, they really are the picture of evil in this story that even Alyx questions who are the true monsters, either them or the infected.
The story was fast paced, action packed and even though the characters were always in peril, the high stakes is what made this book a page turner. Kill or Cure was a great read for me and if you enjoy dystopian books, you might want to check it out!

Trigger warnings: loss, a bit of gore, a sexual assault attempt.

I was provided with a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The story focuses on the relationships between Alyx and her "family" and their attempt to keep her brother Tommy safe after he seems he may have succumbed to the virus. The plot is paced well enough that I felt a sense of urgency and importance, and also made everything else really. The was a good amount of action scene, but also time to get to know the characters and their personalities. The idea was interesting and there are a few plot twists that were done really well, however towards the end it felt like it was a little bit too lucky and convenient the way in which events unfolded so that Alyx could achieve her objectives. I bet she was surprised herself. There were some pacing issues in my opinion once they get into the new camp when the romance seemed to have taken the attention from the main plot. I am hoping that there will be more bloodshed in the sequel.

THE CHARACTERS….

Alyx is a 17 years old girl who in the beginning is trying her best to save her brother who was ill, so she and Will go to collect this supposedly healing plant outside the compound. I really liked her for her selflessness and her ability to keep her shit together when things turned sour and for most of the part did what she was told even when she wanted to rebel. The ability to keep one's mouth shut is actually, in my book, an incredibly good asset. Throughout the plot, she is trying to keep her family safe and together so when they end up in a worse place from where they left, she has to collect her courage and do her best to save her family. However, after she meets Colt, she seems to go into silly mode around him; I wanted to shake her a few times and point her towards Will since she was so blind towards him. Like you could see that attraction from a mile away, but she wasn't having it. Sigh.

I liked Will, he was there for her at all times, he even left his own mother behind to go with them (not that said mother was much of a mother, but still his mother, capisce?). I could see that he had strong feelings for her and he was willing to walk with her to the end of the world to keep her happy and safe, but that did not make him a loser. He was also dead funny and wicked, and I liked him a lot. On the other hand, Colt, besides the fact that he was strong and handsome I do not know more about him and because he kinda forced himself into the story, I did not really like him. Yes, he proves himself to her, but I was just not with him (maybe because I really don't like love triangles). Team Will!

The villain aka The General wasn't that terrifying to me and did not care much about him. I would've liked his character to be explored a little bit more. We only meet him on a handful of occasions so his motivations for being an assholes felt a little bit meh. I am hoping that in the next instalment we will find out more about what makes him really tick.

THE WRITING…

The writing was in tune with the tone of the book, it was easy to read because the story flowed nicely. There were a few cliches here and there (Eg.: hot girl is hot but doesn't know she's hot until she wears tight clothes to show curves she didn't know she had...), but overall it was a good reading experience.

THE ENJOYMENT…

I really enjoyed this book. I think I read it 2-3 days and I do recommend it especially if you want something dystopian to read quickly, but also with some romance.

This is a genre that has been done in a million different ways for a million different readers, and one is hard-pressed to find a book that is a little different or offers something new. I’m thrilled (and relieved) to say that this book does that in addition to being entertaining and well-written.

It’s true, this is indie author, Pixie Britton’s debut but you would never guess it from reading it and it’s a series debut as well. Huge undertaking, but if book #1 is any indication then I think we can continue to see great things from this author.

This is the story of teen siblings being raised by their uncle in a post-apocalyptic world that is ravaged by the ‘Infected’. It gets your heart pumping right away with ‘Alyx’ and her best friend ‘Will’ outside the walls of their protected village, slashing their way through Infected because they are looking for something they desperately need for Alyx’s brother ‘Tommy’. It’s perfectly gruesome which is a fantastic way to start a story if you ask me.

And so begins a gut-wrenching tale about familial bonds, young love, and of course zombies!

This is a good one guys, so if you’re thinking “Ugh, read it a thousand times!”, you may want to give this book a read. Yes some elements are familiar, but honestly the author has created interesting characters and an imaginative storyline that are really enjoyable. I myself look forward to the next installment.

I enjoyed reading this over my camping weekend. The characters are very likable, which pulls on your heart strings, since its the zombie apocalypse. Some may get eaten! It's not your normal run-of-the-mills zombie read. Tommy (The brother) somehow survives the infection and turns into something MORE. He exhibits traits that I thought were almost vampire in resemblance. Insatiable hunger, clear good-looking skin, and strength. I cant wait to see what happens to him next. Then there's the romance! LOVE IT! lol. I enjoyed Will and Colt banter with Alyx. Will may have waited too long to swoop her off her feet. Especially, now that Colt is in the picture. I have to say, I'm on team Colt. He seems so much hotter. Great read if you're looking for a Zombie Romance with twists and turns along the way.

It's strange how an ordinary day can change in a flash.

We never saw them coming.

Summary
In a world that is plagued by the Infected it's not safe to leave the walls of your city. But after her little brother falls sick and nothing seems to help him, Alyx doesn't have a lot of options. Her last resort is finding the yarrow flowers and hoping that it will be enough to cure him.

Writing
I can't really say anything bad about the writing style. It's really simple, but it makes it easy and pleasant to read.

I didn't like the fact that every single character has the exact same voice - they speak in the same way. Even Tommy - who is supposed to be a kid. If Alyx would call him Tom instead of Tommy I am sure I would have forgotten that he is younger than the rest of the characters.

I have to admit that the things that I was most bothered by weren't really that important, but they severely impacted my enjoyment of this book. For example, Alyx asks one of the characters to stop calling her "Alyx", since he knows that she doesn't like it. But further in this book she introduces herself as Alyx every single time. And everyone keeps calling her that and it's suddenly not a problem. Or a guy finding a half naked girl in a locked room with a man who clearly just assaulted her, didn't realize that it was a rape attempt untlil the girl enlightened him. And he was actually shocked! Like, of course that this man would rip off her clothes just so he could beat her!

Oh, and by the way - it's also a wonderful cocktail full of overused YA tropes.

Characters
I didn't really care much about Alyx or her brother. Or the love triangle. I think that every character was a little bit too flat and one-dimensional. To top all of that they made A LOT of stupid, unrelatable decisions. I just couldn't bring myself to care about any of them.

The only exception was Joe. I actually really liked him. To be completely honest I don't know if I would be able to finish this book if it wasn't for him.

Plot
For a book about zombies, there is really not a lot of zombies. So if that's what you were looking for, I am sorry to disappoint. The plot centers more around the characters and their relationships. It shows that even with actual monsters lurking in every corner, people are still the most dangerous thing for human existence. (It also shows that it's possible to give up everything you know and have in your life for someone you know for 12 hours just because they are hot).

I was bored for the most part of the book and I was rolling my eyes A LOT. But I honestly have to say that I really enjoyed the ending. It actually almost made me cry, which was unexpected to say the least.

Overall
I didn't really enjoy this book. I had a hard time reading it. Yet still, somehow, I find myself interested in knowing what is going to happen next. Why? I have no idea. I guess it really was a pretty decent ending.

Alyx lives in a town of survivors with her brother Tommy, her guardian Joe, and her best friend Will. The Infected come from time to time, but they know how to protect themselves. When Tommy is infected, they know that they will have to leave. Without the protection of their walls, they are in danger when any traveler or Infected comes near to them. They have to protect Tommy, find new shelter, and avoid the Infected while they are at it.

I started off this novel truly invested in the story. I liked the characters, loved the setting, and I was looking forward to seeing how they would grow as the novel went on. By the time I reached the end of this book, my dreams were dashed. I still enjoyed the action scenes and I enjoyed most of the plot, but the romance ruined it for me.

I knew that Will and Alyx were going to be a couple from the start of the novel. I had hoped it would just be the two of them, but of course, no YA novel can go without a gold old-fashioned love triangle. I truly hated when Colt came into the picture, there was really no need for him to be there. Alyx fell for him because he “protected” her, but Will had literally been protecting her for years before that. They grew up together. Her lame excuse for wanting Colt over Will just didn’t add up, but she continued to ignore everyone that told her Will had a crush on her. This love triangle was painful to read as both boys started pining after Alyx, and the rest of the storyline seemed to die along with it.

Everything picked up again at the end of the story when the more important characters were added back in, like the deaf girl Winter that they found on their journey and a few other people they picked up. It is these characters who are making me really want to read book 2. Now that everyone is back into the story, I think the love triangle will be put to the side for more exciting story and action.

I wouldn’t recommend or discredit this book, as I think things might change in the next novel, so read it if you enjoy dystopian novels but don’t mind extremely annoying teenaged love triangles.

I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.

Overall Rating: 2 out of 5 books.

Today's Recipe:

2 cups of ravenous zombies by @thereanimatedwriters

1 lb of badass female YA protagonist, as so well done by @jkwilson29

Stir well while adding 2 tbs of young romance, as written by @cassidyreyne

Simmer for 178 pages.

The result? A delightfully tasty reading treat called Kill or Cure by @pixie.britton. The zombie sub-genre is full to overflowing with outbreak stories, but this story takes place a few years after the original start of the end. While there are zombies, or "infected" as they're called in this book, this is more a book about family, surviving with the ones you love, and the power of perseverance. Alyx may not be the ultimate alpha female in the genre, or even in this book, but she still radiates enough gumption to earn the title "kick-ass".
Britton has created a fun little story, with a cast of characters and a storyline that make it impossible tio put down. I'm just hoping that when the zombies do take over, I have my own group of Alyx, Suzie, Will, Colt and Tommy to hang with.

Upon recently finishing this book I had a burning urge to give this author a shoutout on one of my social media platforms (something I haven’t done before!). ‘Kill Or Cure’ is the first book to bring me close to tears, and the only reason I didn’t cry is because I wouldn’t allow myself! Just like my favorite character Alyx wouldn’t. Britton manages to inject topics such as love, family, relationships and many other more light hearted themes into such a contrasting genre where you would rarely find these ideas fleshed out to something worth reading.

Britton has a perfect balance between light and dark which takes you on a small roller coaster of emotions throughout the book. I felt so strongly about this book to the point that towards the end I had a genuine weight on my chest crushing down whilst I eagerly awaited the answers I yearned for since the first problem arose early on.

To put it simply, this book is a refreshing take on the zombie genre that made me laugh, smile, cry and grow angry at each turn and I thank the author for that!

I don’t normally go for the zombie or infected dystopian post-apocalyptic books, but the blurb on this one made it sound different. Alyx & Tommy’s parents were killed when the infected first showed up in their community, their Dad had them hide in a cupboard. They were fairly young when this happened. Their mother’s brother, Joe, who was in the military when he heard about it and he immediately came to them and was a great father role model. The youngest brother Tommy gets scratched but doesn’t seem to be turning into the infected monster. So the three of them plus Alyx’s good friend escape over the wall to try and find somewhere else to live. Too young seems to have gained incredible strength. They meet Willow on their journey. That is all I am going to say I don’t want to give away any spoilers but do plan to read the next book at some point. This is written for a young adult age group and I am a lot older but Troy enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It has everything you could want in a zombie story - action, danger, a hint of romance, and the love of a family trying to survive in a world gone wrong. Alyx and Will play off each other well and help keep the story interesting during lulls in the action. There are times when your heart is in your throat, just hoping things will turn out right. A great young adult dystopian story.

One of my absolute favourite of all time!! The description and detail is incredible which really sets a picture insides the readers brain. Also, the way how each character is portrayed throughout the entire book is amazing. If you like The Walking Dead or any zombie/ thriller books then I definitely recommend this book. :)

This was good but not great.
The characters were a little flat, the action entirely wasn’t believable and I have no idea of Tommys age.
At one point he’s a preteen, then he seems to be of a similar age to the rest of the group.
The relationships are a bit weird, they seem a little forced and unnatural.
The main issue was that too much happened too quickly, but with no building of tension it all kind if fell flat.

I love when I pick up a book and can get sucked in from the very first chapter. This is when I realize that I will finish it quickly because all I want to do is keep reading until the end. This is what this book had done for me and I loved it!

There was a lot of action and it started immediately so it was easy to get sucked in. There were zombies but the whole book is more character driven so the zombies are kind of secondary. Don't get me wrong, you do get your fair share of zombie slaying but the plot of the book is different and not just about the walking dead.

I enjoyed all of the characters. I felt that they meshed very well together. Alyx, Will and Tommy started off as young kids but have to grow up really quickly by the end of the book. The author had written them so well that you can see the subtle changes throughout. I really felt like I got to know our female heroine and enjoyed seeing the whole story through her eyes.

I cannot wait to see where this story is going to go and I would love to get a history of Winter in the next book. There is also a little love triangle going on (which I adore BTW) and I cannot wait to see how that pans out. I think that I know which way Alyx's heart is leading her but I feel that she has a strong bond to her other love interest which may hold her back from showing her true feelings.

That ending shattered my heart! It was a bit of a tear jerker and I was left sobbing! The writer did a great job at pulling my heart strings. Of course it is going to be a series...so now the wait for the second book!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this review copy in exchange of an honest review.

Action packed zombie story featuring 17 year old Alyx and her brother Tommy. Infection is close at hand and prompts a hasty exit from one sanctuary to another that may not be what is seems. An easy read with enough story to keep it moving quickly.

This book had me gripped from the moment I picked it up. I’m a quick reader, but even I was shocked how quickly I devoured this one! I think I started reading on the Friday evening and by the following evening, I was turning the final few pages with tears in my eyes! Yes, you read that correctly. This zombie, post apocalyptic, dystopian craziness is all of that, yes, but it also hits you right in the feels, too. Something I wasn’t expecting, but was pleasantly surprised by (if crying can ever be pleasant?!) The fact that I had that reaction, means this new author did a pretty great job of character development and storytelling. This first book is certainly a great set up of the world, and the characters. I just wish there had been more in this first instalment. I’d have liked to have had more character backstories within this book, for the author to have delved further in to those key character histories that she hints at. Perhaps they’ll come in the later books. I’d love to see more of that in the next instalments - perhaps playing around with and mixing up the POV so we can delve into the mindset of some of the other awesome characters ... who knows?! I’m excited to see where she takes it! What a great debut novel, can’t wait for the next one.

The world has fallen to the infected. People survive by staying in towns and avoiding the infected. But Ally Silverthorne’s brother, Tommy, has come down with the flu. There are no conventional medicines so Ally finds herself and her best friend Will in the forest looking for yarrow flowers to help.

There are some in town that are worried that Tommy will turn into the infected and want to do him harm. It becomes a race for Ally and Will to help cure Tommy before something worse happens to her family.

This was a good take on zombies, but I have to admit that I wished there were more in the story. Things in the compound suck and Ally is a strong minded person. She does manage to keep silent with all the demands that are expected of her but there is a breaking point.

This is a great start to a new series. The only thing that I have a problem with is the whole love triangle. These are not my favorite things in stories and this one felt especially forced to try to add more drama. This is still a great read and I am excited to see what is going to happen in the next book.

This book was so fun to read! A great debut for Pixie Britton! While zombies are definitely a thing in this, the family aspect is much more the real focus. I love the way the author writes, especially the way she describes the characters, their emotions, and the world around them. I found this to be an easy to follow book. Everything had a nice flow to it, so nothing felt too rushed or too slow unless it was necessary. I found myself actually caring about the characters and what was going on. I didn't feel bored at all when reading this. Books like this is usually a tough sell as I'm very picky with anything otherworldly, but the way the author constructed her book into focusing more on relationships actually made me enjoy this much more than I thought I would. I would definitely recommend getting this. I'd give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

I received this ARC from NetGalley for free in exchange for my completely honest opinion.

If you are a fan of stories involving zombies, like me, then i think you'd really enjoy this book. The narrator of the novel is a strong female character (which i love) and there is a plot twist towards it. She is strong in facing her problems but the fun bit is she still is a teenager who is going through teen problems. In a way, you can relate to the characters and feel or understand their emotion even though you've never experienced their situation. This novel brings out a whole new reality of a zombie apocalypse. It's very captivating and i absolutely loved it because it isn't cliche nor do you expect the turn of events. It pulls you into a new world and once you pick it up and read it. I purchased the book despite having a free Kindle copy as I knew I'd enjoy this book........and I wasn't wrong.
From the moment I read the first chapter I was hooked. With the way the characters are introduced and described I felt as though I knew them and straight away was concerned for their wellbeing etc.
The story follows a solid story line and flows really well. Not jumping around the place or planning irritating time jumps.
Without spoiling anything there were a couple of scenarios that occur in the book that for me were bold and a lazy writer could have taken the easy option, but thankfully in this case, the author didn't.
I'm already itching to read the second installment and I hope that it isn't far away.
Thank you for a great read, thoroughly enjoyed it.
