When Kill or Cure got into my radar, I kept getting ads for this mobile game called State of Survival. I was very happy to be able to participate in my first MTMC book tour and I took it as a sign to both start reading the book and playing the game the exact same night. And that was a marvelous idea!
Getting into the book, I felt a bit confused about the year everything was taking place. I could only assume it was close to our time since guns and medical research were being mentioned. The year does get mentioned later in the book, as well as some hints about how everything went down and I can only guess the entire timeline of how zombies came to be would be revealed in the sequels. The first book is also very short compared to books 2&3, and I felt that was a minus that could've been filled with more worldbuilding.
Our main character is Alyx, whose younger brother, Tommy, gets infected but somehow survives and doesn't turn into a full-zombie and instead gains some superpowers. For their safety, they are forced to leave their survivor camp behind the walls and venture into the forest in search of medical help, to discover what Tommy has turned into and if it could possibly be the cure for zombieism. Alyx and Tommy are not alone in this dangerous adventure, they are being followed by the uncle who acted for many years as their father after their real parents were killed by zombies, and by Alyx's best friend, Will, who is in love with her.
What I like about zombie stories is how they're more about what becomes of humans when faced with having to survive, how they are reduced to what they actually are deep inside when society norms don't matter anymore. Only the strongest, most cunning and adaptative person can live to see another day.
The writing style is simple, very fast-paced, and you can easily finish the book in a day, in about four hours. The characters are a bit one-dimensional, and I think the love-triangle was unnecessary, but it didn't really bother me. I expected to be a whole lot more zombies, but for a very long time, while camping in the forest, our characters don't have to fight any, so that made me question whether there aren't many zombies since they were killed already or that the population wasn't very dense in that location, to begin with. One character I particularly liked and hope to read more about is a deaf/mute girl they discover in the forest who becomes their ally. I think I would've absolutely loved the story if it were from her perspective, how she could survive on her own despite her inability to hear the danger closing in, using her other senses.

Uncle Joe was another interesting character. He deserted the army and became a wanted man when he decided protecting and raising his niece and nephew was the most important thing in the world. He is a many with many secrets, who knows important people and I was frustrated when he chose to enter the military base, knowing he would be immediately in danger if recognized.
The story uses many tropes and I was skeptical at how the characters always found allies in the key moments. However, I couldn't help but enjoy it and would definitely read the sequels.
It's strange how an ordinary day can change in a flash.
We never saw them coming.
