Berry Basket Mystery #3

Killed on Blueberry Hill

Rate this book
It’s peak tourist season in Oriole Point, Michigan—the blueberry buckle of the fruit belt. Nothing draws the crowds quite like their annual carnival. And nothing turns it sour faster than murder . . .

The Blueberry Blow Out festival has begun and it’s time for Marlee Jacob, owner of The Berry Basket, to shine. Unfortunately it’s also bringing out the worst in her fiancé Ryan Zeller. Ryan’s rivalry with Porter Gale, owner of Blueberry Hill Farm, spills over into a very public and very ugly fight. And after they compete in the pie-eating contest and a raucous tug of war, their orchard blood feud takes a deadly turn . . .

The death of the king of Blueberry Hill is a shock but not too surprising—he was a diabetic whose last pig out meal was deliciously fatal. But when authorities discover that someone tampered with Porter’s insulin, a tragic accident is looking like murder—and Ryan is the key ingredient. Now Marlee’s investigation to clear his name is taking her deep into the Gale family secrets, and she’s being shadowed every step of the way by a killer whose sweet revenge is just beginning . . .

Summer may be winding down, but Oriole Point, Michigan, is getting in one more berry inspired festival to bring in the tourists. The Blueberry Blow Out Festival includes carnival games, booths, and friendly competition between the various berry growers in the area. At least it is supposed to be friendly. Marlee Jacobs is shocked when she witnesses a fight between her fiance, Ryan Zeller, and Porter Gale, the owner of one of the biggest blueberry farms in the country. Yes, there is bad blood between the two families, but this went much further than a rivalry normally would. When Porter dies a few hours later, people think it is complications from his diabetes. However, the police believe it is something more, and they are looking at Ryan as a suspect. Can Marlee clear him?

I love this series, and this book is another example of why. The characters are strong. The series regulars are fun, and a couple even made me laugh, but we spend more time with the suspects, and they actually felt better developed to me than the regulars. Not that I'm complaining. The strong suspects helped drive a complex plot where the red herrings provided their own complications, not just as a distraction from figuring out who the killer is. I enjoyed the book the entire way through, but the final third got so compelling I really didn't want to put the book down. Throw in a few blueberry infused recipes, and you've got a fantastic book.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book.

I’ve really started to enjoy this series! It wasn’t until the end that I put all the pieces together to figure out “who done it”. I do have to say was very happy with the way the Marlee’s romance turned out. 😊😉

As tourist season continues to boom, Marlee dives face first into the Blueberry Blow Out festival. Literally. Her fiancé, Ryan, signed her up for a pie eating contest in hopes to outshine his rival, Porter. As the events continue, Marlee soon learns that Ryan has a mean streak when losing an event turns into an all-out brawl. Just when things can’t get any worse, Porter is murdered, and Ryan gleefully takes off on a fishing trip. As Marlee hunts down the killer so that she can clear Ryan’s name, she learns that her fiancé is hiding a lot more than she could’ve ever imagined.

I’ve been a fan of this series since I picked up the first book a few months back, so I was excited to get my hands on this installment. Sadly, I spent a good portion of the book irritated and finally got on board with the story a little past the halfway point. It’s not a bad story, and there are great things about it, but the story dragged along and there were some things that just kept taking me out of it.

Early on, Marlee implies through her thoughts that a character thinks she’s weak and helpless and therefore makes herself weak and helpless after helping this character get away from two sexual harassers. This just rubbed me the wrong way and really made me lose respect for Marlee, which soured my view as I read several more chapters. Combined with her relationship falling apart, how little she poked around in Ryan’s life while trying to solve the murder, and the slow pace of the story, it took me some time to truly get back into the story and like Marlee again.

That said, there were good things. I liked that Marlee and Ryan’s relationship problems finally came to a head, revealing that Ryan has a lot of secrets and ulterior motives. When the other shoe dropped, it really dropped! However, it took a long time to get to this point and Marlee seemed like she was just poking around doing a very distracted attempt at sleuthing because she didn’t want to face the sinking ship that was her engagement. I also think it’s odd that Ryan being the prime suspect in the murder was kept under wraps even though the town’s gossip queen must’ve known he was a suspect. I would’ve liked to see the rumor mill really get churning with that information as Marlee investigated the murder. There could’ve been more pushback when she jumped to conclusions because it read like she was just there to point the finger at anyone but Ryan.

I enjoyed seeing the usual cast of characters and seeing what they were up to as well as hearing their opinions and seeing their reactions as events unfolded. I think Natasha, Dean, and Andrew are my favorite characters. I love seeing how they interact with the other characters and what shenanigans they get up to themselves. I would honestly follow a spin-off series following any of the three if that was something that happened somewhere down the line.

I felt optimistic about the next installment when I reached the last quarter of the book because the story picked up and it had the same charm that hooked me in the first place. While this is not my favorite book of the series, I am looking forward to the next installment and am already counting the days until its release.

Killed on Blueberry Hill by Sharon Farrow is the 3rd book in A Berry Basket Mystery series, and a great addition. Marlee Jacobs owns the Berry Basket in Oriole Point, Michigan, where she sells berries and berry related items. The town is celebrating blueberry season with their annual Blueberry Blow Out festival. Marlee's fiance Ryan is showing a dark side Marlee has never seen in him before, against Porter Gale, who owns Blueberry Hill Farm. When someone is murdered, Marlee must find the killer. This is one of the best cozy mystery books I have read in a long time. I stayed up until 3am to finishing this book. I could not stop reading, and all the secrets revealed, WOW! I can not wait to read the next book in the series. I strongly recommend this book for cozy mystery lovers like me.

I received an ARC from Netgalley for a fair and honest review.

Marlee Jacob is getting ready for the annual Blueberry Blow Out. As the owner of The Berry Basket shop, she’s quite excited about this opportunity. What she isn’t excited about is her fiance, Ryan Zeller, entering her into competitions with his arch rival and putting her in the direct line of fire. The first event is a pie-eating contest, followed by a tug of war. She wished he would have asked her before signing her up for these contests.

When Ryan’s arch rival suddenly dies, it was assumed it was due to his poor health condition. As the investigation continues, the police discover that someone deliberately caused his death. Of course Ryan is the prime suspect and it’s up to Marlee to prove his innocence. Unfortunately, she’s not so sure he is innocent. As she looks into the murder, she uncovers some shocking family secrets and realizes there is a long line of people who had reason to kill the man.

This is the third book in the series and the first one I read. I didn’t feel as if I missed anything at all by starting with the third book. I immediately fell in love with the characters, especially Marlee. They are well-developed and the story is well written.

Killed on Blueberry Hill is a page-turner for me. I could not put my Kindle down. I just wanted to keep reading and was disappointed when it ended. There were several twists along the way to finding a killer. I was very surprised at how it all wrapped up.

I’ve already added the first two books to my TBR and I’m looking forward to seeing how this all began. Sharon Farrow is a new-to-me author that I’ll be keeping an eye open for - by the end of this book, I had an unusual craving for blueberries!

In The 3rd book of Berry Basket series, we find Marlee Jacobs participating in the BLUEBERRY BLOW OUT FESTIVAL. Her fiance, Ryan Zeller had entered her in the pie eating contest and tug of war without telling her. After the tug of war, Ryan gets into a fight with his enemy, Porter Gale and almost killed him. Marlee begins to have questions about her relative with him. This book has so many turns I had trouble at times following the tale. The villain was well hidden and I thought I knew but I was wrong until the end was explained. I highly recommend this book and series. Delicious sounding berry recipes are included.

Marlee and the other residents of Oriole Point, Michigan are celebrating the Blueberry Blow Out - a fun festival filled with lots of fun events like a pie-eating contest, tug-of-war, and more. The Berry Basket sponsors a bounce house ride and also has a booth at the festival. Between that as well as the daily tourist traffic at The Berry Basket, Marlee has a lot on her plate. Factor in her wavering feelings about marrying Ryan, witnessing a fight that almost turned deadly between Ryan and a rival blueberry farmer, Porter Gale, and then Porter's death...Marlee is stressed and with good reason.

This story was full of so many twists and turns. The story played out unlike any other cozy mystery I've read. I loved that I didn't know how it was going to end. Killed on Blueberry Hill is a bit of an edgier cozy - there are a few mild curses, some on-page violence (nothing too gory), and a sophisticated mystery. Though this is the third in a series, you could easily enjoy it without having read the others.

Strong characters, a well-developed plot, and tasty blueberry recipes make Killed on Blueberry Hill a cozy you shouldn't miss.

I received an ARC to read this book prior to publication. My opinion is my own and my review is not influenced in any way.

One of the things that draws me to this series is that the setting is in my home state. For some reason, that always makes the series a bit more fun for me. This installment is set during the end of summer, and once again Marlee is at the center of a murder mystery. This time in a way I didn't see coming. I like Marlee Jacobs and think she is a fun, relatable protagonist. She is smart and independent, but the one thing that has bothered me from the first book is her relationship with Ryan. Well, I happy to say that much to my relief, the author ties up the story line nicely this book. The secondary cast of characters makes their return appearance and round out the story with their diversity. The mystery is engaging and keeps the reader guessing through the story (or at least this reader). As usual with Marlee, there is a climatic reveal with her tangled up on the middle. I'm anxious to see where Ms. Farrow takes us with future books in the series.

I love this series, and book 3 didn't disappoint! From the Blueberry Blow Out, the mysterious tampering of the insulin, to the quirky characters and humor, the Berry Basket mysteries are one of the best series I've read. But start with book 1, so you don't miss out on the background information!

“Killed on Blueberry Hill” earns 4/5 Blueberry Stains…Clever and Hard to Put
Down!
I enjoyed Sharon Farrow’s “Killed on Blueberry Hill,” the third book in her Berry Basket Mystery series. Easily read by newbies since she revisited enough background and character connections to keep the reader engaged, but fans won't feel it's too much already known info. The mystery follows a traditional cozy formula, but Sharon’s first-person writing style with vivid descriptions and entertaining banter make this a favorite. Accidental death determined not so accidental; boyfriend has motive enough to be suspected; efforts to clear his name turn up suspicions; secrets uncovered; karma wins the day! I recommend the series and this book is a “delicious” place to start.

My two favorite words...no, not "it's Murder!" but "Recipes Included!" I love berries and all the references in this book, and blueberries are tops! Now I have three different, easy-to-follow recipes to enjoy them: Blueberry Coffee Cake, Baked Blueberry French Toast, and Blueberry Muffins.

Killed On Blueberry Hill is a fast paced cozy mystery that will leave the reader guessing until the end.
Marlee Jacob is a fun, down to earth character and her role in this book is fabulous.
There is plenty of excitement at the Blueberry Blow Out celebration and when Marlee ends up in the middle of another murder investigation, she has no idea what's in store for her.
I enjoy this series and the author creates a nice story filled with colorful personalities.

I volunteered to read and review an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.

Killed on Blueberry Hill is the third installment in the A Berry Basket Mystery series set in Oriole Point, MI and featuring berry shop owner, Marlee Jacob. Business at the Berry Basket is booming and it's time for the town's annual Blueberry Blow Out, where Marlee and her employees will be having a vendor booth and sponsoring the popular Bounce House for kids.

Rivalry between two popular berry farms, Zeller Orchards and Blueberry Hill ripens during the festival games with Marlee's fiance, Ryan Zeller determined to beat his nemesis, Porter Gale at everything from the blueberry pie eating contest to the tug of war. Marlee is not happy that Ryan has signed her up as a member of his team without consulting her, but she participates and wins the pie eating contest. With a terrible stomach ache she begs off from the next competition and is watching the tug of war from the sidelines when things take an evil twist. Blueberry Hill wins the tug of war and thinking that Porter was responsible for planting a piece of glass that injures one of the Zeller team, Ryan goes ballistic and attacks Porter almost killing the man.

Already having second thoughts about her relationship, Marlee is both shocked and saddened by Ryan's behavior and flees the fairground. Later in the day she learns that the two men have apparently made amends and rejoins the orchard families for their nightly dinner. Unfortunately, the peace doesn't last long and Porter begins needling Ryan to take a ride on the Blueberry Hill sponsored "Death Drop". Anxious to prove he is King of the Hill, Porter climbs aboard the ride alongside his trophy wife and when the ride comes to a stop he's dead. Thinking the diabetic suffered a heart attack brought on by his overindulgence of sugar and alcohol throughout the day, the community is stunned to learn that in fact he has been murdered. It appears that someone has substituted his insulin with potassium chloride and all fingers point to Ryan.

A fast paced, descriptive plot transports readers to the center of a fairground. You can smell the foods, hear the bells on the midway games, listen to the joyful screams coming from the rides and flinch as you make your way through the Fun House. A mystery full of cons, grifters and gambling, delicious berry treats all topped off with the hysterical antics of Marlee's pet African Gray Parrot, Minnie. This series gets better and better and readers won't be disappointed with this latest installment.

I received an advanced copy of Killed on Blueberry Hill from NetGalley via Kensington Publishing. While not required to write a review I am more than happy to offer my honest opinion.

Killed on Blueberry Hill
By: Sharon Farrow

4 Stars

It’s time for the Blueberry Blow Out in Oriole Point, Michigan. The town is bustling with tourists who are there for the rides, the carnival food, the games, and of course the blueberries. One of the big sponsors of the Blueberry Blow out is the “King” of Blueberry Hill, Porter Gale. There is a long standing feud between the Gale family and the Zellar family. Marlee’s fiancé, Ryan, is one of the Zellars. He is determined to best the Gales in the blueberry pie eating contest and the tug of war game. Porter Gale wins the men’s pie eating contest. Marlee, who was coerced to enter by Ryan, is competing for the Zellar women. Marlee easily wins, and Ryan couldn’t be more ecstatic. The next contest is the tug-of-war, and it’s the Gales versus the Zellars. After an extremely close and vigorously fought match, the Gales pull out the win. Ryan accuses the Gales of cheating and a knock-out brawl breaks out. Afterwards, Porter and Ryan shake hands and appear to make up. All is not copacetic though as later in the evening Porter tries to egg on Ryan. Marlee makes Ryan walk away. As they are leaving Porter decides to ride on the Blueberry Death Drop. The name holds true for Porter who is dead at the end of his drop. Ryan becomes the prime suspect once his death is ruled a homicide, and Marlee wrestles with the idea that her fiancé might have killed someone.

What a great, fast-paced cozy mystery from start to finish. I didn’t want to put the book down until I completed it. I absolutely loved all the character match-ups and their interlaced involvement in if the murder of Porter Gale. We have the Zellar’s vs. the Gales, Ryan vs. Porter, Marlee vs. Ryan, Ryan vs. himself, Marlee vs. Wyatt, and the murderer vs. justice. These match-ups become the backbone of the story, and they seem to come together effortlessly. The story is as much about the characters as the story itself.

It took me until almost until the end of the book to figure out who the murderer was. It didn’t ruin the ending for me at all though. There was so much more to go through at the end. It was far more than just announcing the murderer.

As an added bonus, there are delicious sounding recipes at the end of the story. I’d actually suggest making at least one of the recipes while reading the book. That way you can cuddle up with the book and a blueberry treat.

Even though this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone book. The author does a great job of catching up new readers without being too repetitive for the readers who have already read the previous books.

KILLED ON BLUEBERRY HILL, the third book in the Berry Basket Mysteries by Sharon Farrow is another action-packed addition to an entertaining series! The reader is immersed in the festivities of Oriole Point’s Blueberry Blow Out Festival. With the author’s strong descriptive narratives, I could taste the blueberry pies; hear the screams coming from the rides like Blueberry Hill Death Drop (a tower drop ride); see the flashing lights from the carnival games; and feel the chills and thrills from the scary fun house. The protagonist, Marlee Jacob (I love that she’s named after a character in Christmas Carol!) owns The Berry Basket and has her hands full running her shop and having a strong presence at the festival. She is a marvelous character and I greatly admire the way she cares for her employees and friends. She treats them all like family. I especially enjoyed Marlee’s adorable African Grey Parrot, Minnie, who add some humor to the scenes with her ‘chatter’. I had no idea these beautiful birds had such huge vocabularies.

Marlee is engaged to Ryan Zeller. She is an independent woman and is having a difficult time reconciling herself to Ryan’s overbearing and controlling ways. After an ongoing feud erupts into violence between Ryan and a neighboring farm owner, Ryan finds himself a suspect in murdering the man. Marlee is sure her fiancé is innocent, but Ryan is hiding secrets from her. Determined to clear the name of the man she loves, Marlee gets involved in trying to find the truth. As she asks questions, she uncovers family feuds and secrets that people don’t want uncovered. Ms. Farrow knows how to bring an exciting pace to the story and the suspenseful conclusion had me sitting on the edge of my seat!

I greatly enjoy the various berry themes of this series and KILLED ON BLUEBERRY HILL doesn’t disappoint. The author includes interesting bits about harvesting blueberries along with some of the health benefits of this tiny berry. Ms. Farrow also includes several blueberry recipes at the back of the book.

I was provided an advance copy with the hopes I would review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Marlee's getting ready for the Blueberry Blow Out festival as it has begun. She has to make sure The Berry Basket shines throughout the festival. Ryan, her fiancé decides she is going to be in the pie eating contest. Thank goodness she is hungry and just might win. She needs to according to Ryan as Porter Gale, owner of Blueberry Hill Farm, won the men's round and he is also rivals with Ryan's family farm. Marlee does win to everyone's delight but now she learns she will be in the tug of war contest. Again, Ryan volunteered her.

The rivalry gets worse as Ryan's team loses to Porter and he accuses him of cheating. A piece of glass was found on Ryan's side. All hell breaks loose and Ryan attacks Porter. Marlee is disgusted by this behavior and storms off. When later that night Porter dies on one of the rides that is named after his farm. Was it because he was a diabetic and ate anything in sight? Or did someone at the festival kill him?

Marlee has to decide what to do about her fiancé and the marriage but Kit comes back into the picture. Why was Ryan seen in a different place then where he was supposed to be fishing? What else has Ryan lied about? What will happen? Who killed Porter and why?

Loved this book in the series it has to be my favorite so far. There are so many twists and turns and suspects you will be kept guessing until the end. I loved all the characters you hated some and loved the others. Marlee and Minnie are a hoot.

The recipes at the end look great and especially the Baked Blueberry French Toast which reminds Marlee of Emeril's recipe.

Thank you to Kensington and the author or an arc to read for my honest opinion.

Marlee is making the most of the Blueberry Blow Out to bring in business to The Berry Basket. Between her two young helpers, the shy baker, and herself the store and the booth at the festival are going strong. What should be a great and fun time is marred by the competition between the Zellers and Gales, with both families determined to win every competition. Engaged to Ryan Zeller, Marlee is volunteered for the women's blueberry pie eating contest. Only it seems, Ryan wants to make a lot of decisions for Marlee and that's an added layer of conflict. Add to that the ugly fight between Ryan and Porter, a less than heartfelt apology, and then Porter is dead.

Many of the towns people talk about the hostility and the tug of war incident, only Ryan has conveniently left to go fishing with his buddy. In between finishing out the festival, Marlee is busy trying to prove that Ryan didn't kill Porter. The more she tries to understand, the more secrets she uncovers and the more comfortable she is about the whole situation. Unfortunately, uncovering secrets is not always good for one's health, Marlee's or Ryan's included.

The story is well-paced and the ending isn't obvious, though believable. I liked Marlee and the Berry Basket crew. The story has a small town feel with feuding families, yet not immune to more big city problems. Although this is the third in the series, it's the first I've read. It can be easily read as a stand alone. If you enjoy a cozy mystery, you'll enjoy Killed on Blueberry Hill.

Welcome back to Oriole Point, Michigan--the blueberry buckle of the fruit belt and where murder could happen to the most unlikely citizens.

This is the third in the series and just as enjoyable as the first two. All the usual characters are back with a few new faces.

A lot more happens in this book then just solving a murder (or two). There is also Marlee's relationship with her fiance Ryan. She has had doubts all along but red flags keep flying high and she seriously reconsiders continuing her relationship with him. This is not a bad thing because if I saw all those red flags I would be questioning my relationship with him too.

The victim in this book is Porter, the owner of Blueberry Hill. His farm is a direct competitor to Ryan's so many thing that happen are not unexpected as it seems likely that Ryan could be involved in the murder. There are some other factors that come into play that also tie into Marlee's apprehension in marrying him. Because of her natural inclination to investigate, Marlee finds herself knee deep in clues, killers and blueberries. Her sidekick is Natasha, a former Russian pageant contestant. I will say that Natasha doesn't have all of our slang down and there were several times I burst out laughing at her phraseology such as "shark" shooter instead of sharp shooter.

There are quite a few surprise twists in the story and not everyone is who they appear. There are a few clues in the book but to me these clues were more musings than clues so I didn't read more into them, but I should have but I wouldn't have know the "why" behind the killer's actions until the end when all was revealed.

In this next book of the series the Blueberry Blow Out festival has started and Marlee is excited to have a booth to show off what The Berry Basket has to offer. All looks good I told her fiance Ryan signs her up for a pie eating contest without telling her. She reluctantly agrees and actually wins but is noticing that Ryan seems to do things all the time without asking her opinion. Things start to go down hill when Ryan gets into a fight with his rival during the tug-of-war competition. Marlee is beginning to see Ryan in a different light, what happened to the man she fell in love with? When Porter, Ryan's rival, ends up dead on one of the rides it looks like he had a heartache. After it comes to light that he was poisoned Marlee worries that Ryan will be a top suspect and with the way things are going she isn't sure how to feel about it all. She realizes that she can't just sit by and do nothing so she starts her own investigation. During her search for answers she comes across several secrets that the dead mans family had hidden away. With so many suspects to choose from Marlee doesn't know if she'll find the answers she seeks. What about Ryan? Can she trust and marry a man that has been acting crazy and been caught in a lie? Follow along as Marlee digs deep to come up with the an explanation for who the killer is and why. This is a fantastic series that will having you craving berries!!!

I liked that this took place in Michigan and that it involves all things blueberry. Most of the characters were okay. There were a few that I didn't like. They were too much for me. Also, I didn't like the romances in this story. That was due in part to the characters involved. One just didn't go the way I wanted it to. The rest of the story was also okay. Maybe I should have started with the first book in this series.

This is the third installment in the Betty Basket Mystery Series by Sharon Farrow and it is the second that I have read in the series. I read the first Dying for Strawberries and I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I enjoyed this one even more. In this book, the town of Oriole Point is celebrating the Blueberry Blowout. During the tug of war between the fruit growers in the area, Marlee's fiancé, Ryan, gets into an altercation with another local grower, Porter. Porter is a diabetic and later that night, Porter is on the ride that his family’s farm has sponsored, when he passes away, from what everyone thinks it was just a result of his drinking and being diabetic, but it turns out his insulin had been tampered with. Ryan becomes the prime suspect. Marlee wants to believe in Ryan, but she is finding out more and more lies that Ryan is telling her and things he is keeping from her.

This was a very well written book that kept my attention from the start of the book to the last page. I really like Marlee and she is a very well-rounded character. Her fiancé, on the other hand is a little hard to like. The setting of this series is charming and seems like a place I would like to visit. I enjoyed the relationship elements in this book. There were several returning townsfolk to this story and we are also introduced to many new characters in this story. It was hard to figure out who the killer was, there were some suspects but there were many twists and turns that made me guess as to who the culprit was. Marlee wants to stay out of the investigation, but when all clues point to Ryan and makes her reassess their relationship, she can't help but become involved. She also learns more secrets that Ryan has been keeping, that make her question his innocence even more. She also has a possible new love interest that also muddies the waters for her and Ryan. The ending of this book was pretty explosive with many things happening and I was honestly shocked by the reveal of the killer. I highly recommend this series.

Marlee Jacobs is the owner of The Berry Basket in Oriole Point, Michigan, a store that sells all things related to berries. She's participating in The Blueberry Blow Out festival, not only having a booth for her wares, but also sponsoring one of the carnival rides, a bounce house (although technically, this isn't a ride, is it?)

She's also having second thoughts about her upcoming marriage to Ryan Zellar, never more so than when she watches his behavior with rival grower Porter Gale, who manages to push Ryan's buttons. When Ryan attacks Porter, Marlee leaves to cool off and rethink everything that's occurred. When she returns to the fair, she finds Ryan. Not too long after while they're walking they hear screams, and realize that something is wrong with Porter's young wife Sloane. But it's not Sloane that's in trouble - Porter is taken off the ride they've been on and it turns out that he's dead. What shocks Marlee is Ryan's reaction to the death, and it's not good.

But she soon learns that Porter was murdered, and Ryan is the main suspect. While Marlee may be having regrets about her engagement, she knows Ryan's not a killer. She also finds out that more people than Ryan had problems with Porter, including his own sister, who hated him since she discovered that their father left everything to Porter and nothing to her and her children.

Now she needs to clear Ryan's name, and in order to do so must try and discover who has the most to gain, and who hated Porter the most. Will she find a killer before a killer finds her?...

This is the third book in the series, and I have to say that I enjoyed it much more than the other two, which fell mostly flat for me. Marlee has finally developed a backbone where Ryan is concerned; in the previous books she allowed him to push her around and control her and I hate that. Unfortunately, Marlee is still very much just walking up to people and questioning them. I'm honestly surprised no one has turned on her yet. If she hounded me with questions the way she does everyone else, when I saw her coming I'd cross to the other side of the street. She's not subtle, and she's invasive. Marlee needs to learn that she's not a police officer, or change the way she questions people. Seriously.

I also still don't care for the fact that the author compares people to actors and book characters rather than describing them. The reason for this is, as a reader, I prefer to picture characters in my imagination. If I'm told they look like an actor or an animated character, I can't picture them any other way. It's not pleasant to imagine the cartoon character of Alice in Wonderland walking down the street next to Sandra Bullock. Rather disturbing, actually. So my personal preference is for the author to describe the character, not tell us someone they look like.

Anyway, I did like this story a bit more than the previous ones, and there weren't as many issues with it, which is always a good thing. The plot was interesting, and there were enough twists to keep one interested throughout. A decent book to read for an evening.

Oh, yes! I have a new series to add to a favorites list for cozy mysteries. Although I jumped into Sharon Farrow’s Berry Basket Mystery Series with the third book, I had no trouble following the storyline of Killed on Blueberry Hill. At first, given the theme of the book and the series, I was afraid blueberries would be overdone in this book. While they do take center stage as a motif, the emphasis is not forced because the setting is Oriole Point’s Blueberry Blow Out festival. It is, in fact, integral to the plot. Although blueberries are found all through the book, their inclusion is not repetitious because of the variety of ways the theme is used—food, drinks, atmosphere, businesses, costumes, and carnival fun.

The plot of Killed on Blueberry Hill has lots of threads that tie together well…in the end. Along the way they seem contradictory and confusing, pointing a finger at many suspects with plausible motives. This cozy mystery contains a wonderful assortment of characters, but many are not who they seem to be. Secrets and deceptions underlie the festive atmosphere. Marlee is the owner of The Berry Basket, a store in town that sells blueberry products, so she knows the three major producers, all family-run businesses. Her fiancé Ryan is a member of the close-knit Zellar family. Why is he pushing Marlee so hard on the wedding date, selling her family home, and just about every other decision in her life? When the owner of another blueberry farm is murdered on his own carnival ride, who will get the blame? There are several deaths in Oriole County. Who is set to inherit the wealth? This cozy has an exciting, action packed ending and major surprises. Along the way we meet Natasha, the recently widowed Miss Russia, with her delightful accent and choice of words. Not only does she add humor to the book, but she is instrumental in helping Marlee. I don’t know if Natasha will be included in future books in the series, but I hope so. She ramped up the book from 4 stars to 5 for me.

I would like to extend my thanks to netgalley.com and to Kensington Books for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Killed on Blueberry Hill is the third book in Sharon Farrow’s Berry Basket Mystery series. This steadily paced book is entertaining and easy to read. The mystery is interesting, and the characters are well developed. The author provides lots of twists and turns and possible suspects to keep the reader engaged. Other than some adult language, this is a clean read. I’m looking forward to reading future installments in this series.

Marlee Jacob owns the Berry Basket, which is located in the charming lakeside village of Oriole Point, Michigan. Her Aunt Vicki owns and operates Humane Hearts, an animal shelter, and Marlee adopted a beautiful and talkative African Grey Parrot, named Minnie. She’s engaged to Ryan Zellar, but is having second thoughts about going through with the wedding, and isn’t sure if it’s just wedding jitters or the fact that he holds lots of secrets close to his vest and is overbearing and controlling. She’s also troubled because Ryan is insistent that she sell her beautiful lakeside home and move to Zellar Orchards. Oriole Point residents, business owners, and tourists are enjoying the town’s annual Blueberry Blow Out, a weeklong festival. Without consulting her, Ryan entered her into the pie-eating contest, which she won, and the tug-of-war competition. Fortunately, for Marlee the team decided to go “all male,” and she didn’t have to participate. Ryan’s family owns Zellar Orchards and grows everything from peaches and apples to four kinds of berries. The Gale family, led by Porter, own Blueberry Hill, the largest blueberry farm in the state. Ryan and Porter don’t like each other and have been rivals for years. Their rivalry turns into a brawl after the tug-of-war when Ryan accuses Porter of placing a piece of glass in the sand on his team’s side. When Porter dies later that evening, officials discover that someone tampered with his insulin, and Ryan becomes the number one suspect.

KILLED ON BLUEBERRY HILL by Sharon Farrow
The Third Berry Basket Mystery

The heat is on, literally, as Oriole Point celebrates the Blueberry Blow Out Festival. Tempers are flaring as the summer temperatures increase. Marlee Jacob is aghast at her fiancé's behavior as the feud between Zeller Orchards and Blueberry Hill Farm turns violent. But Ryan's behavior toward Porter is just one warning sign, his behavior toward her is worrying as well. When Porter dies, everyone assumes that his death was due to his careless disregard to his diabetes. But was it actually murder? And could Ryan actually be guilty?

The third Berry Basket Mystery is a labyrinth filled with subtle clues scattered amid the red herrings and suspicious behavior of multiple suspects. Sharon Farrow proves to be a master at manipulating emotions, spiking my anger at the various behaviors of some of the characters and annoyance towards others. I wanted to smack quite a few of them. Natasha's return to the scene brought a breath of fresh air and some much needed comic relief from all of the drama. This vivacious "shark shooter" is a hoot. She's funny and over the top, yet with down to earth common sense and a heart of gold.

This character driven mystery has a theme of familial loyalty, love, and hate. How far will family, particularly mothers, go to protect their children? How much faith and trust should people have in the ones they love? And how long will it take for the scales to come off their eyes?

KILLED ON BLUEBERRY HILL is a fun read with plenty of emotional twists and turns as it reflects on family dynamics, love, and loyalty.

Recipes included.

Princess Fuzzypants here: Marlee should be the happiest woman alive. Her business is thriving and she just won the Blueberry Pie Eating contest at the Blueberry Blow Out on the shores of Lake Michigan.. She’s engaged to Ryan but soon after her pie eating victory, her life seems to go into a downward spiral. It isn’t just normal pre-wedding jitters either.
Ryan gets into a brawl with a neighbouring blueberry grower and Marlee sees a side to him she never knew or wants to know. When the same rival dies on the midway ride his family sponsored, Ryan’s glee is off-putting to say the least. Who is this guy and why does she want to marry him? When Ryan disappears on a “fishing” trip the following day, the police question Marlee. The lies and secrets Ryan has been keeping tumble out one after another. It makes her wonder if she ever knew him and by the time he returns, she has serious doubts about their future marriage and even worse ones about Ryan himself. She even wonders if the man she loves might be a murderer.
There is no shortage of other suspects. The family dynamics of these blueberry dynasties would put Dallas to shame. The possible killers include the man’s sister, his nephew, his wife and assorted others. The tangled web gets stickier and stickier until Marlee witnesses something that could cost her her life.
I got caught up in the story thoroughly right to its nail biting conclusion. Marlee is a smart, savvy woman who is a great nucleus of a good series. It made me want to go to the Lake and eat blueberries.
Five purrs and two purple paws up.

I have read the first two books in this series and really enjoyed them so I was really looking forward to this book. I love Marlee and the town of Oriole Point, Michigan. In the latest installment they are celebrating the Blueberry Blow Out week right before the Labor Day hoilday. This is a big week for the town and many events are planned including a carnival. The Berry Basket has a booth at the carnival along with Marlee and her employees helping out with taking ride tickets keeping them all very busy. All of the local farms are also involved in the carnival. There were many things going on in this book, not only the mystery, and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I had a range of emotions while reading this book and was so surprised by what happened at the end. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from Kensington Books through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The main character of the story is Marlee Jacob , the owner of “The Berry Basket “ and the story is set in the lakeshore town of Oriole Point , Michigan . The town is in the middle of its annual summer “Blueberry Blow Out “event that makes great use of the towns specialty - Blueberry growing.
When a town resident is found dead soon after competing in one of the events at The Blueberry Blowout , it becomes up to Marlee to find out what on earths going on and what could have possibly happened . I loved this dreamy setting and all the mouthwatering foods mentioned and likable characters. .Marlee is a great main character , smart and unable to resist a good mystery . Loved her!

Another intriguing book in the Berry Basket series! In this latest book, the town is having a Blueberry Blow Out Festival. Marlee’s fiancé, Ryan, gets into an ugly fight with the owner of a rival orchard, Porter Gale of Blueberry Hill. When Porter dies, it is discovered he was murdered and Ryan is the prime suspect. This book was full of secrets and intrigue. I felt like up until now we have mostly scene a decent side of Ryan. In this book, we see a much uglier side of him. I felt with Marlee and was right there with her as she questioned how well she really knew Ryan and if she should still marry him. I’d love to see more books in this series and see Marlee move on from Ryan and develop a relationship with Kit. I feel he is a much better guy for her. Hope to see more of these great characters and the Berry Basket!

Killed on Blueberry Hill takes place at another berry related event. This time the competition involves Marlee's future in laws and their business rivals. Seems a bit crazy to Marlee, but I think we've all met people like that. Marlee continues to wonder about her relationship with Ryan. I wonder why the author chose this tack.

The story line doesn't really have one of those mysteries that the reader is privy to enough information that he/she can deduce who the killer is, though there is enough given that you can have suspicions, actually, lots of suspicions. there are definitely several candidates for killer.

Would love to see Natasha play more of a role in Marlee's next adventure. She may be a caricature, but she's a lot of fun.
