Those who learn history can doom others to repeat it.
A new generation of humans has entered adulthood. Raised by robots, these freshly minted citizens of Earth struggle to fit into a society that has gotten by without them for a thousand years. Until Alex Truman shows them a new path. Raised by Charlie7 and cloned from the original Charles Truman, Alex feels that it's his right to rule mankind. With the entirety of human history as his guide, he learns from the successes and failures of the Human Era and puts them to use against a society that's completely unprepared to oppose him. Who can stand up to this budding tyranny? Abby Fourteen asks that very same question and comes up with just one answer: her.
I am a creator of worlds and a destroyer of words. As a fantasy writer, my works range from traditional epics to futuristic fantasy with starships. I have worked as an unpaid Little League pitcher, a cashier, a student library aide, a factory grunt, a cubicle drone, and an engineer--there is some overlap in the last two.
Through it all, though, I was always a storyteller. Eventually I started writing books based on the stray stories in my head, and people kept telling me to write more of them. Now, that's all I do for a living.
I enjoy strategy, worldbuilding, and the fantasy author's privilege to make up words. I am a gamer, a joker, and a thinker of sideways thoughts. But I don't dance, can't sing, and my best artistic efforts fall short of your average notebook doodle. When you read my books, you are seeing me at my best.
My ultimate goal is to be both clever and right at the same time. I have it on good authority that I have yet to achieve it.
Book 5 of the Robot Geneticists series finds humans coming into their own for the first time (since the extinction) as a political force on Earth. The differences between metal and flesh have never been so important. Is a mixed-mind robot really human in a metal shell, or just an AI?
This is a can't-miss installment for followers of the Robot Geneticists series; but it's a challenging read. Our favourite protagonist, Charlie7, is firmly in the background on this one. Of this tale's two main characters, one is bored with everything, and the other is a psychopath. It's hard to relate to either of them.
The Narrative leaps ahead by months, years or decades between chapters. It's necessary in order to tell a political thriller of this scope; but it's also another factor that challenges the reader's engagement.
And finally, the titular tyrant is an accurate reflection of current real-world psychopathic leaders. Sometimes too accurate. I found myself growing angrier with every page. Kudos to the author for this writerly feat!
If you're this far into the series, then you, like me, need to know what happens to Earth in the 32nd century... and what really happened in the 22nd.
I received a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
In this episode of Robot Geneticists, a foreign entity enters the human stage. Alex Truman, possibly the first human with a mental illness of borderline personality disorder. He has spent his childhood studying dictators and tyrants. Now he wants to make himself one. One human girl decides to take him on to save face for her mother, Abigail Fourteen.
She has virtually no chance of winning against the cunning Alex, who has taken to breaking committee laws, and thumbing his nose at the mixed robots.
This is a classic tale of what can go wrong with children even when they are raised right. What can happen when egos take over to fight a real or imagined threat. It's scary to think what one strong personality can muster. Or, what two, fighting against each other can do.
This episode definitely held my attention. There weren't a lot of action scenes but plenty to keep your mind busy. And, the ending, I think holds a little surprise, for everyone.
I can't wait to see where the next episode takes us.
I received an ARC from the author for my honest review. My opinions are truly my own.
“Those who learn history can doom others to repeat it.”
Nice tagline. Great story. The publisher’s blurb does a good job of summarizing what’s going on here so I won’t reject it. all you really know that Engineered Tyrant is yet another great addiction to J.S. Morin’s Robot Geneticists series. More of a “think piece” than an action tale (although that’s relatively speaking as every book in this series explores new ideas / concepts and arguably is a “think piece”), this still has the author’s great hallmarks, complex and fascinating characters in Alex Truman and Abby Fourteen, and s great story that totally grabs the reader’s imagination.
Take a great premise add believable and engaging characters, mix in well crafted dialog and you have a winning series. Hopefully Mr. Morin is chained to his desk under the tender mercies of a very demanding editor, slaving away at the next installment. I eagerly await its publication.
A great novel in terms of forward-thinking and as well the great what if and what would occur if the human race only had one chance of survival no spoilers, the books and series, in general, are worth the read because it follows many characters from beginning middle and ends you will understand what I mean.
So the humans begin thinking they know better than the robots who made it able for them to even exist and half have a memory of how much humans messed up the world the first go round. Shockingly the humans are wrong. This Book is not at the level of the first three but still an excellent book. New characters, new developmets. I missed Charlie in this book, he isn't in it often.
A really good book, different from the rest of the series but just as good, Charlie7 son wants political power he wants to stop the robots from running everything. Only Abbey14 stands in his way.
