Outer Isles

Rate this book
A member of the Society for Psychical Research society, Ada Goodrich Freer’s interest in the folklore stemmed from her contact with Father Allan McDonald in researching beliefs in the second sight in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Although much of her work was mired in controversy and accusations of putting her own name to Father Allan McDonald’s work in many of the articles she published in various journals from 1897 onwards, her enthusiasm and passion for the subject is undeniable.

In this illustrated volume, Goodrich Freer details life in the Outer Isles of Scotland at the turn of the twentieth century, giving an overview of its history, geography, interspersed with rich and fascinating details of how people lived and subsisted, including the beliefs, folklore, and folk customs unique to each island or area.
