Food choice in a capitalist, exploitative and unsustainable food system isn't easy. This booklet's the culmination of years of being active around food - cooking, growing, mutual aid and community projects, promoting vegan ism, studying nutrition, autonomous health, and trying to make sense of all the connections including : our curent food system, social determinants of health, nutritional science, omnivores vs herbivores, developing more intuitive eating, plus new recipes (wild foods, ferments, snacks and treats, and more).
* ,,The various bits of conflicting and biased health information we are given make it hard for us to understand what exactly are healthy choices. No wonder we are so confused about food.'' * ,,our food system is terrible and rife with animal cruelty, and if you care at all about that, don't eat animal products.'' * ,,At its core, the discussion around eating meat can be very defensive and divisive. This is inevitable as it's about food - such a very fundamental thing, characterised by desire, habit, culture, identity and passion. The debate can involve strong moral stances, causing feelings of guilt and defensiveness.''
A must read for anyone interested in how to eat well and to brush up their knowledge on basic nutrition. Empathetically not a diet book or necessarily a vegan book (although slanted that way) but a book which is both thoughtful and thought provoking.
It has interesting looking plant based recipes but I’m a visual person and need photos which sadly it lacked otherwise I would’ve given it five stars.
Books about eating are often informative, which this is, and they sometimes come with recipes that I need to cook IMMEDIATELY, which this does. But a book that's gentle and kind and says that eating is important but not always easy, that there are benefits to a vegan diet but the biggest benefits come from listening to your own body? This book is the whole package, a three course meal in an amuse bouche A6 sized package. 5 stars is not enough for how much I love it.
really helpful and also (surprisingly for a book about health) really good about anti-fat bias! also has some nice recipes I'm excited for and an emphasis on not striving for vegan purity but just reducing harm as much as possible without restricting oneself. the biggest issues are the food system not the individual and improving our collective relationships with food from a ground up approach will help but not solve the problem
