I positively adore Reily Garrett’s work, and the McAllister Justice series is shaping up to be truly amazing.

This boxset contains the first two books in the series, along with the short story prequel to book one. All are fabulous reads, offering up wonderful examples of the amazing you can expect from Reily Garrett. You’re pulled into each story from the very start, quickly finding yourself addicted; there’s plenty of action to keep you hooked; plenty of steamy moments to get your blood pumping for a different reason; you fall in love with the characters – the chemistry between the couples is something you will adore, and the wonderful relationship between the brothers will leave you wanting to join the family; the writing is fabulous; and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. All in all, Reily Garrett offers up all you need in a book that leaves you turning page after page.

Although each book in the series works perfectly fine as a standalone novel, I would recommend reading these books in order. Not only are they amazing books, but it is so much fun to watch the way the characters grow throughout the series. Trust me, this is a series worth reading.

🔹 TENDER ECHOES

*** 4.5 Hearts

Tender Echoes is a free prequel in the McAllister Justice series. It is also the first book I have read by Reily and I was hooked from the very start. It might be short but it packs a punch.

Lexi was orphaned as a teen and found a family in the underbelly of the streets with the prostitutes who wanted to protect her. They saw something in her from the beginning. They knew she didn’t belong on the streets. Somehow fate stepped in and connected her with an older woman. A mentor. That is when she discovered her talents with a computer. Now that the only family she knows is in trouble, she will do anything to safe them.

Ethan McAllister is determined to figure out who is killing the prostitutes of the city. They wouldn’t talk but someone was giving him clues. This person was to good to be traced. He wanted to know who it was but it was more important to get the killer off the streets. Will he figure out who Lexi is? Will he catch a killer?

I thought this was a great prequel. It is a glimpse into who these characters are. What they can do and what sacrifices they are willing to make. I am excited to start Digital Velocity and looking forward to the rest of the series.

Quotes:

“What do you think, Hoover, do we pick the hottie or the redneck?”

Her plan was both ballsy and dangerous with freedom for her family on one end and mutilation by a lunatic on the other.

“I’m sure he gets called a lot of things.”
“Most of the time, ‘defendant', I imagine.”

🔹DIGITAL VELOCITY
5 Hearts

Digital Velocity is the first full-length novel in the McAllister Justice series. There is a free prequel called Tender Echoes that you can either read before or after. It will introduce you to the main characters within a novella. I do not want to spoil anything especially since its suspense involving the criminal mind.

Lexi is a tech genius. A programmer by day and a hacker by night. She only uses her skills for good and has been sending the hot detective by the name of Ethan McAllister tips for the last few months. She can not be traced. She doesn’t want to be seen but she does want him to take her seriously. Especially, after the scene she sent him into. It was now time to show her what she could really do...in person.

Ethan and Lexi have a complex type of relationship. They have to learn to trust each other. Stay close. Watch the other’s back. All while tracking down a killer. One that winds his ways through the dark web. He is a sick fucker with a crazy fan base. One that leaves nothing but riddles behind. Will they be able to find the killer before it’s too late?

I thought this was a suspenseful and engaging story. If I didn’t have so much to do over the last few days I would have finished the book in a day or two instead of almost five. It was killing me to walk away each time. I enjoyed the character’s dynamic. They had their own kind of banter, flirtiness, and respect. And the dogs! They are kickass dogs. Ethan’s brothers were a fun bunch. The definitely like to give one another shit. I am assuming the rest of the series will be with them and I am looking forward to it. Oh and Larrick, Ethan’s partner. He is um...unique. Lol

Overall...it’s suspenseful, complex, and fun. It’s one twisted game that had me guessing.

Quotes:

“Aw, you used your best camo jacket. I’m honored.”

“What made you want to work homicide?”
“It was the only division left without a brother in it.” Ethan rolled his eyes.

“I don’t want gentle. I want you, unleashed and unhinged. I know what lies beneath the smooth exterior, and that’s the one I want inside me.”

🔹 BOUND BY SHADOWS
***4.5 Hearts

Bound By Shadows is the second book in the McAllister Justice series. It’s technically the third since there is a prequel novella. I recommend reading the first two together. You can read Bound as a standalone because it’s a different couple but they are connected. I loved Caden in Digital Velocity so I was excited that he got the next book. I don’t want to spoil anything and since the synopsis explains a lot, I will make this fast.

Kaylee just wanted a fresh start. She had no idea that within a week of being back to a town she lived in as a child, she would be kidnapped and trapped in a cage underground. She also didn’t expect to make it out alive and into the arms of a childhood friend and his protective brothers. But that’s exactly what happens. She is the child of a cop. She is not letting these creeps run her out of the city she just came back to. She needs to seek justice and save the future lives of other victims.

Caden can’t believe what is happening. Just two months ago his life was forever changed and now it was time to protect another woman. Not just any woman. A strong, stubborn, and sexy woman who could bring him to his knees. He can’t think about her in that way. Not until she is out of danger. Will he keep her safe and fall for her all at the same time?

I love a good suspense romance. Sometimes I just need the added action that isn’t between just the sheets. The puzzle of finding a murderer. Figuring out who is behind the veil. And having a love story in between is the cherry on the top.

Overall...it’s a suspense, sexy, fun, and crazy ride. I not only enjoyed the couple but also his brothers. They just love giving each other shit and it’s hilarious. But at the same time they are protective, collective, and smart. I can’t wait to see who is getting the next book!

Quotes:

“You have the ultimate stalker, Kaylee, but he’s harmless. Kinda like a cat.” Lucas grinned at his younger sibling.

“I’m no longer controlled by my joystick. Too many women make a game of it.”

“Aw, darlin’, we have a long way to go. Settle in and enjoy.”

‘The deadliest weapons are the ones we never see.’

Bicoastal author Reilly Garrett has been employed as an ICU nurse, a private investigator, and in the military police – all of which supplies her with the intricate and detailed knowledge from which she forges her books. She addresses issues such as man's cruelty and ingenuity for torment and torture, having witnessed the after-effects of a teenager mugged at knife point for a pair of tennis shoes, or an elderly woman stabbed repeatedly with a screwdriver for no apparent reason- all leaving an indelible impression that will forever haunt her subconscious. On the other side other spectrum of experiences she has observed a woman stopping her vehicle in severe, snowy weather to offer her own winter coat to a stranger, a teenager wearing a threadbare hoodie - life's diversities observed by Reilly are endless.

This box set of the three McAlister Justice series is a treasure. Book 1 TENDER ECHOES is outlined as follows: ‘Theft of spirit is no one’s birthright. A quirk of her X chromosome furnished Alexis with an edge few others enjoyed. After fate plunged Lexi into orphan status and an intolerable foster home forced her to the streets, a group of prostitutes sheltered her from their vicious pimp. Seeing something special within, they nurtured and shielded her from their harsh reality until she could forge her own path in life. Destiny frequently takes us back to our roots. Lexi’s return journey begins when a serial killer attacks someone who’d offered her refuge in her previous life. Relying on courage and wit, she must stay a step ahead and secure evidence to free her family from a psychopathic murderer.’

Book 2 BOUND BY SHADOWS is equally satisfying – ‘The architect of fear employs many forms. Kidnapping and murder never crossed Kaylee’s mind when seeking a fresh start in Portland, a new beginning to shed the remnants of tragedy dogging her steps. After escaping from an underground cage, she fights to stay one step ahead of the killer bent on silencing his only witness. Kaylee. Two months after dodging a serial killer’s best efforts, Caden McAllister flounders within a social sink hole, unable to move forward, too stubborn to step back. Guarded and wary, the private investigator’s stagnant lifestyle detonates into chaos when a battered and bloody young waif stumbles into his care. Framed for a murdering a past lover, Caden must clear his name and overcome his charge’s doubts while keeping her out of the sex-slave trade. When betrayal ends with Kaylee’s re-capture, Caden must conquer his past and risk all or lose the one he loves.’

Book 3 DIGITAL VELOCITY for many readers is the strongest – ‘The deadliest weapons are the ones we never see. Keyboard prodigy, Lexi Donovan has risen from teenage orphan of the streets to complete independence with little help along the way. When a friend is threatened, Lexi’s anonymous message sends police into a firefight, leading to a wounded cop. Detective Ethan McAllister’s well-ordered life turned upside down the day an obscure text message led to a sexual predator’s identity. Since then, Callouston PD’s finest can’t trace the elusive hacker. The latest tip leads him to a brutal mutilation and a riddle indicating the identity of the next murder victim. The dark net houses a playground for the morally depleted and criminally insane. When Lexi discovers the killer’s digital betting arena, she finds herself centered in a cyber stalker’s crosshairs bearing equal talent. Street life strengthened Lexi while toughening her protective shell, but nothing could shield her from the shrewd detective forging a path to her heart.’

Terrific novels from a writer of immense skill. This is a series to own! It is a luxury to have the three novels together.

Digital Velocity Review:
Lexi Donovan was a teenage orphan running the streets for a long time, until the kindness of a stranger helped her. Now at nineteen, she's a keyboard prodigy, like Penelope Garcia (Criminal Minds) awesome, but completely independent, while letting very few people actually see her in person. When the friend who helped her in the past was threatened, she had to start talking to the police department, which brought her into Detective Ethan McAllister's well-ordered life. No matter how hard he tries to figure out details of the epic hacker, he finds nothing, until she has no choice but to physically come to him. There's a sadistic serial murderer out and about, and Callouston PD's finest can't seem to catch up, until Lexi helps. However, that puts her straight up in the cross hairs of the evil killer, so will Ethan be able to keep her safe? HOLY INSANE RIDE BATMAN! WHAT. AN. EXCITING. STORY!!!!!!! My heart is still racing, as the story starts out with a bang, and never slows down until the very last page. Lexi was an awesome girl that I absolutely LOVED, while Ethan was a drool worthy hero that I need more of. Plus, the very colorful cast of secondaries, Ethan's brothers and partners, kept me laughing hard throughout the whole story, although I was still on the edge of my seat. I've recently become a fan girl of Reily Garrett, but her brilliant writing in this story has me highly addicted, and I NEED MORE! And the cherry on top is those diabolical twists and turns that kept the colorful metaphors coming, with the big reveal coming out with my loudest f-bomb yet, as I NEVER SAW THAT ONE COMING! Anyway, I am going to end this before any spoiler douchery commences (in excitement, not to be mean), and just finish up with HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDING THIS EXCITINGLY EPIC BOOK TO ALL!

Bound By Shadows is the second book in the McAllister Justice series, and while it can be read as a standalone, I really recommend reading Digital Velocity first, as it will make more sense with the added details. Kaylee is in Portland for a fresh start after a tragedy nearly derailed her life, but never did she think that she would be kidnapped there. She's drugged, wakes up in a cage, and barely manages to escape. However, she really didn't take into account that the sadistic killer would keep trying to get her, so she's really not too keen on letting anyone help her. Caden McAllister is just 2 months out of dodging of sociopathic murderers best attempt at killing him, and isn't able to move forward. His quiet life explodes into serious chaos when he comes across Kaylee after escaping her prison. Now they are in a race to figure out who kidnapped her before they take her out, but will he be able to keep her safe? All the books that I read by the talented Reily Garrett to date I've enjoyed, but the McAllister Justice series is EPIC! And while I LOVED Digital Velocity so much, Bound By Shadows came out even bigger if possible. Bigger mystery, more action, tons of intense suspense, and some angst thrown in for good measure. Kaylee is seriously a bad a** heroine that I am girl crushing on, while Caden is yummy with his tortured soul self. And the entertaining cast of secondaries are the same with a few new ones which kept me laughing until my sides hurt. The diabolical twists were around every corner, and I spent the majority of my time dropping loud f-bombs. I CANNOT WAIT for the next book in this series, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

DIGITAL VELOCITY Book 1
This is my first book by this author. And I freely admit that I was intrigued by the author bio: "Past employment as an ICU nurse, private investigator, and work in the military police has given her countless experiences in a host of different environments to add a real world feel to her fiction. " THe author is definitely able to grab the reader EARLY, and keeps the reader interested with a very good plot, twists and turns in the series of murders being investigated. The main herione is an intrigue - Lexi, growing up as an orphan, is reluctant to trust. The Detective Ethan McAllister is very likeable, growing up around 4 brothers all in law enforcement - and Ethan sharing that he chose homicide because none of his brothers had. The plot moves fast. There is lots of action, suspense, action and not too much romance to turn off the typical male reader of action and murder fiction. And the very creepy serial killer resorts to some extremely disgusting ways to kill his victims, publishing the action of the Dark Net. This book is really hard to put down. I just today ordered a Kindle copy of this book for my adult daughter's birthday today.

BOUND BY SHADOWS Book 2
This is my second book in Reily Garret's McAllister Justice Series. The books starts very quickly (with a kidnapping and escape), and moves very quickly after that. She is helped by a very interesting hero - Caden McAllister and his unique band of brothers. Her writing is vivid in its details about cruelty and torture, but not pushed to the point of being grotesque. This is an excellent murder mystery thriller that will be interesting for most men, and just enough romance to interest the men's spouses. Lots of action and intense suspense. The characters are well developed, and very interesting, including Caden's brothers. I agree with other comments that the book is a good sequel to earlier efforts. But this book also stands alone very well. I liked this book enough to gift to my adult daughter.

TENDER ECHOES – Prequel
For me, I read the prequel last. But I agree with other readers that describe it as a great beginning, setting up the characters for the McAllister Justice series of books. The book starts off with a bang, and then the plot moves very quickly. A good read for a single afternoon. Although the books stand well by themselves, it is worth reading them “in order”.

Tender Echoes

~Exciting prologue
~First, I’ll state that I received this set as a gift from the author to read and review.
~This story also gives a glimpse into the gritty writing style of author Reily Garrett. The author strives to produce a story that will engage the reader, while providing an on-the-edge-of-your-seat reading experience!
~Lexi is the computer wizard of the McAllister clan…and of the series. This short story really is the introduction into who she is. “Digital Velocity”, the next book in the series, is really all about her and police Detective Ethan McAllister. This little story gives a good glimpse into the early person of Lexi.

Digital Velocity

~Intense police procedural - mystery and romance
~From the opening pages where the reader is thrust into an active murder scene and the police response…it is non-stop excitement.
~This is really two separate stories taking place simultaneously.
~The first storyline about police tracking down a sadistic serial killer is a non-stop action adventure. It had all the elements of a real crime being solved. A murder…or two…police working the crime scenes, gathering evidence, dead ends, dealing with what is admissible in a court, and of course the relationship of the cop and his partner
~The other storyline deals with the relationship between the police officer and his informant or consultant. Now, I don’t normally give out spoilers…however, I think just about anyone picking up the book will realize that there is going to be ‘something’ happening real soon between Ethan and Lexi.
~This is not a “cozy romance”…it has all the elements of a hot and steamy romance. This might not be the book for everyone…however, if one realizes what they will be reading, all should be okay.
~This one had me guessing until close to the end. I was pretty sure I knew who wasn’t the killer

Inconclusive Evidence

~Sci-Fi – McAllisters - Mystery
~This one was a bit different from the rest of the series that I have read so far…and it was quite enjoyable and worth reading. It does have that “edge-of-the-seat” quality to it.
~In real life there are scientific breakthroughs that give rise to certain concerns. I am not a conspiracy theorist, and I don’t think that Big Brother is watching our every move…however, it is interesting to note how advertising is targeted to one’s computer and social media accounts! I am not going to have a chip inserted in my hand to allow me easy access to the company door locks and vending machines…this technology does exist.
~And this is exactly what this book is based on…a fledgling technology that does exist and, in the wrong hands, could create a real nightmare.
~The McAllister family is thrown into the middle of the fray by a series of events. A new character, Megan, was introduced to the readers. She offers a new and different perspective to the family…unlike the others, she does not come from a law enforcement or criminal (Lexi with her white hat hacking) background. With the introduction of Lucas to Megan, he has met his match
~It was a good twist to see one of the clan, Lucas, not quite up to full speed, somewhat vulnerable…and how he pulls his own weight, yet is taken care of care of by other family members.
~Because of the science-fiction bend to the story, there was a fair amount of high-tech jargon. The author, Reily Garrett, did a good job of having Megan explaining it to, first Lucas, then to the others. This was a good technique to get the medical and science concept across to the readers.
~Not your typical murder mystery…though there was a pretty high body count by the last chapter…there was a high level of deception, intrigue, and plenty of action. There was a romantic element also…between Lucas and Megan which did not overpower the story.

Shattered Reflections

~Next exciting installment in the “McAllister Justice” series.
~This is a story of pursuit. Everything is closing in on Katt…on one front, she is pursued by a scheming killer in an attempt to cover his tracks…on the other side, she is being romantically… reluctantly…pursued by Police Detective McAllister. And all the while she is also pursued by ghosts of her past.
~With a whole family as characters in a story, one might be concerned that characters could become confusing…not so the case in this series. Each book focuses on a couple main characters. The remaining family form a strong supporting cast. They are not simply interchangeable people…each one has his or her special talent. Eldest and head of the family, Matt McAllister, can still be intimidated by computer-hacking wizard Lexi.
~The “bad guy” in this story was unique…I did not expect him to be so relentless, devious, or skilled. He proved to be quite a challenge for the Police Department, and some very involved Private Investigators.
~This was a good mystery story…while a seasoned mystery reader is on the lookout for twists and ‘red herrings’ being thrown their way…this book had ample surprises, which the reader did not always see coming. I do like an involved story line with a strong plot. The original crime almost had nothing to do with the story…however, as the book unfolded everything came together and eventually all the pieces fit nicely. There is an element of police procedural and an equal dose of seat-of-the-pants gut decision making used to solve this story.
~I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a well-written mystery, with plenty of drama, good character development and interaction, and a lot of excitement along the way

Two book series-mixed feelings as I read them

Read the first book-found it well written & interesting, if not a bit too graphic for me. Lexi, with an tumultuous history, gets kidnapped & escapes leaving another woman in the kidnappers clutches. As she works with the McAllisters to free the other woman, she uses her hacker skills to figure out who the culprits are & falls in love with one of the brothers. Except for the graphic attacks of the kidnappers & somewhat explicit sex scenes, this book was pretty good. Could even give it another star.

Then I read the second story, which was also fairly good by itself but the author used the exact same general plotline, with a different heroine & different brother & different circumstances. The graphic descriptions weren't as bad. So for that reason, I gave it an overall 3 stars for predictability after reading both books.

Great read. Couldn't put down this series. Loved the family inter actions a diabolic plot throughout the stories. Both the women in the stories enhanced the plot...actually became the plot and the focus.

Just so so

Writing was just ok.. The second books story let me down when the detectives missed capturing Averal when he was able to escape out of a window with the rope. Real detectives would not have approached such a dangerous situation a second time, especially since they had prior knowledge and had plenty of time to get uniformed officer backup. Story just wasn't believable.

Watch out has explicit sex scenes

The books and characters are excellent when it comes to the mysteries of the books. I don't like explicit sex in my books and since I was hooked on the storyline, I just skipped over those parts.

Now, when I wanted to read it again, I have realized that some text is missing. So far its missing from the "Digital Velocity" book. Dont know if there are any more errors. I tried to delete the book from my kindle and download it again but the problem remains. Can anyone help me a suggest what to do?
