Impostors #3

Mirror's Edge

Rate this book
The danger rises and the deception grows in the heart-stopping third book in the New York Times bestselling Impostors series!

Frey's return to the city of her birth isn't going to be an easy one. She and her love Col must surge on new faces and bodies in order to infiltrate Shreve by dropping from the sky and landing undetected.

Frey's sister Rafi -- no longer a twin in features, but still a twin by birth -- is the wild card. Are the sisters on the same side . . . or are they playing to their own agendas? If their father is deposed from Shreve, who will take control? And what other forces may be waiting in the wings?

Mirror's Edge is another brilliant blockbuster from one of the greatest speculative writers YA fiction has ever seen, set within the world of Uglies . . . and about to converge with Uglies in a spectacular way.

Scott Westerfeld is a horrible person for making us live with this cliffhanger until 2022/3. Like, what? That last sentence is going to be the DEATH of me. I was scared going into this book because I didn't know if I should reread the first two books in this series. Westerfeld did a great job at getting me back into this world and with these characters. This is one of my favourite book in this series so far, aside from Shatter City. It was so good for the series and I'm just in awe at how he paced things and made everything work so well. This review is a real mess but I can't even process things after the ending.

Man this penultimate novel to the uglies spinoff series was so close to four stars but it just couldn’t full get there. Plot wise aside from a few truly action heavy scenes and some decent further insight into the world and lore at large of the universe, we were just left with a semi lackluster almost filler like story that while definitely worth the read if a fan of the franchise. It wasn’t until that intriguing ending that made me hopeful for Scott’s closer that I thought was this actually needed for the story, I might’ve been best to have just been a more condensed novella but even authors you love reading can’t always push out premium bangers. 3.75/5

I am forever in debt to Scholastic Publishing for sending me a copy of Mirror's Edge for review. This has in no way affected my thoughts on this novel.

I would also like to thank Scott Westerfeld himself for managing to both stun me and break me. *writes down conspiracy theories*

To quote Emma, "Thanks Scott Westerfeld it's not like I needed my heart anyway."

This was a buddy read with Rafia, who suffered with me. And then Carly who yelled with me about the ending. Both of these lovely ladies ranted with me what could possibly happen next.

And yes, it's taken me three months of crying to write a review of this. Being a bookworm can have it's consequences.

The plot (which picks up soon after book 2 ends) was a shining diamond, which was not a surprise coming from Westerfeld. He revealed the cunning people of Shreve while keeping the other countries very involved in the story. The plot was a quandary of twists and it was magnificent. And heartbreaking.

I still loved the characters from the previous books and enjoyed getting to know new ones!

Frey was still a beautiful rebel and I love her strong and distinct voice! She has gone through so much in previous book and Mirror's Edge brought even more hardships and rewards. *recalls those last two hardships with no reward*

Rafia has been my least favorite from the start. Her personality traits are rich and entitled. She's almost as bad as her father overall and worse to Frey that her father is. If you hit the spoiler button, you will get a spoiler.

Col. Well. I loved him as I have from the start of this series. Warning: Major spoiler

Yandre and X. Two lovelies I will talk about in the same paragraph, not because they're the same but because they both are side characters I love. Yandre is so loyal and they bright radiance into any room. Boss X is a near opposite but I appreciate his strong-willed personality.

Does Diego count as a character? It's a city and Diego is the worst. Diego is a liar and deceptive country - even though you never visit it in the books, you meet the city avatar. They're manipulative and use poor Frey and make her go through too much! 😭

The writing is perfect for the story, changing as the setting changes, creating many emotions and vibes throughout the book. Westerfeld's elucidative style maintains it's originality and is easy to follow providing just the right amount of description.

The romance was a subplot, but I still need to acknowledge it because each romance is so perfectly timed and well done. The relationships are so realistic and the characters really make each other better!

And a small section for the world building because I've discussed it in my reviews of the previous books. In Mirror's Edge Westerfeld reveals a whole new side of the Uglies universe and it's just amazing and mind-boggling.

Can you be absolutely shattered by a novel and still love it? Yes yes yes.

5 stars ✧ “The world never stops testing you, Frey. Why should we?”

I finished a couple of days ago . . . I just needed to process. WHAT THE HELL. I almost never immediately crave a re-read right after finishing a book but I feel like I need to re-absorb ALL OF THAT to even... FATHOM what happened?

I expected no less than the bubbly-making adventures Scott has taken me through in the past. That's exactly what I got.

I've spent quite a bit of time with these characters and this world, I just love them so much. Every second I was so afraid of something happening or someone betraying Frey just . . . PAIN. The experience was painful but amazing.

Buddy read with Brooke 😭 thank u for going through that with me.

So, you might remember that this review was fairly hard to read, and that's because it has taken me nearly a month to sort my thoughts. And well, here we are.

If I had to describe the Imposters series in 1 word it would be: blank. I mean, these books are minimalism personified. Or literary-ifed. And I don't mean blank, like the books are bland and boring. No. For me, these books just seem to have a sparse vibe. It's kinda hard to describe, but I've never seen anything like it. It was the same with the Uglies series.

Well, because of that vibe, for me, Frey has always seemed to be lacking in personality. Maybe this is purposeful, due to the fact that she impersonated her sister for most of her life, or not, but it led to a more...disconnected...reading experience. I just couldn't connect with Frey.

However, this book changed all of that. In terms of character development alone, this book was an excellent addition to the series. Frey seemed to become much more of her own person, and we started to see more of her personality—and not just her acting as Rafi.

Speaking of Rafi—this book was also great for her development. In the first book, we could see Rafi's confident and flamboyant personality, but in the second book, we learned that Rafi wasn't as stable as we once thought. This book took that instability to another level, and it was great. Both Rafi and Frey lived in an abusive home, yet they both worked through the trauma in different ways. The way that Scott Westerfeld did that was great--showing the complexity of trauma.

Now, as for the side characters—this book was great. There were new additions, and all of them were colorful and unique. We got to explore their relationships with Frey, and nothing about it was boring or contrived.

Then, there was Col. I feel that with the rise of the 'strong female character', the male character could become not much more than a shadow, and the general population wouldn't complain. And that's not what feminists wanted. They wanted equality in literature, which doesn't mean that we have to sacrifice the complexity of male characters.

I know that Scott Westerfeld is capable of creating a complex male sidekick, as displayed with Zane in Uglies and Boss X. But,

As for the plot, I was really impressed. It spanned a much smaller timeline than some of Scott Westerfeld's other books, and it wasn't a mistake. I love books that are on a smaller stage, and it was great.

And the setting—great. We've been in Shreve before, but we got to explore it a different way. Also, Scott Westerfeld is really great at making very timely additions to his universe. For instance, the group of characters who wanted to 'make their mark on history'. It was delightfully funny, while also making you think.

That type of reflection is really what makes this book shine. Without the timely commentary on modern-day society or cautionary tales, this book would a cheap dystopian novel that never sold. The Uglies series has survived nearly 20 years—two decades—due to this. The only concern I have is that if he continues this world beyond this series, it might get somewhat contrived. Who knows? This series will always have an audience.

Side note:

Anyway, besides all of the themes and stuff, I am really excited (and impatient) for the next novel.

Rafi is SAVAGE. I can’t believe she did all that to her own sister, it hurts my heart. Rafi is like the obsessive abusive stalker boyfriend; she neggs, gaslights, manipulates, and uses Frey to the very end.. down to alienation via murder. Intense.

Extreme spoilers. You've been warned.

You had to kill a great love interest AGAIN???? Like come on. I reread uglies before this and already had the fresh pain from losing Zane and you bloody go and do that. I was also under the impression that this was the LAST book in the series. I'm not mad at a new book but I was hoping to have a better conclusion and I assumed Tally would have appeared sooner instead of the last bloody line like come on. And now I have to wait another year for the next one. At this point I'll wait to see if there is book 5 and reread them all at once because I forgot everything from book 1 and 2 and kept losing my place.

I also expected Frey to stand up for herself. Better than book 2 but still not satisfied.

aaaaaaaaaaaaa!

also props to Scott Westerfeld for skillfully embedding reminders of past books into this one...I felt like I could follow it nicely without having to turn to a wiki every few minutes even though it's been awhile since I read the previous books. I really admire how prescient his writing is and yet how relatably teenage his characters are!

Thank you Allen & Unwin for this book in exchange for an honest review

Besides the fact there was a cover change mid series 😳 the third book of the Imposters series was action packed from the opening page.
What I love about Scott Westerfeld's work is that it's a layered masterpiece. While you have the main storyline holding your attention, Westerfeld's layers the story with a mix of political agendas, treachery and friendship.
Before you dive into this series, I would recommend that you read the Uglies series first, because that's another layer to the Imposters series and you don't want to miss the eater eggs!
Without revealing anything about the plot, cause it is book three, just trust me when I say it's epic and I'm dying to see what book 4 brings!

Great series, hated the ending

I love this author and eagerly read all the books in the series. This final book was good, but I wasn’t enamored of it and I hated the ending. Not sure if he was going for shock value or has another book planned. I never fully trusted Rafi and couldn’t stand her by the end of the novel. I’d still recommend it, but if you want closure or a HEA, you’re not going to get it here.

I really love how this series tears apart the idea of identity, something I know teens can’t help but relate to. What an action-packed penultimate adventure, can’t wait for the last installment! I had a feeling Westerfeld would throw in his signature cliffhanger. So nervous-making, but I’m ready for it.

First off, this cover art is gorgeous. It's what made me start this series in the first place. Yes, you judge a book by its cover! A whole series, apparently.

4 stars? 5 stars?? I can only tell you I'm dying to get my hands on that last book!

I can't say there were many twists in this novel; really only one caught me off guard. But the world-building was beautiful. The strategies were solid. I'm invested in the story, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

I enjoyed most of the book, but I have to admit that we were really let down by the climax.
-Philip pointed out that the series set up an expectation that the bad guy is always one step ahead and always has a plan, and this expectation didn't pay off. The end was anticlimactic, with too much plot armor.
-I should have felt something about the dramatic ending, but I only felt like rolling my eyes. I had already used up my outrage about this type of ending in the Uglies series and I didn't have more.
-Jessie agreed with me that ultimately this felt like an empty calorie read and it should have been 3 books instead of 4.
-I felt like I was being led by the hand the whole time while the protag painstakingly explained every nuance, not to mention the constant recapping of events and people. This was boring, until I no longer emotionally connected to the book.

Honestly... Part of me wants to read book 4 because I want to know what happens next in the plot. But I just can't stand the thought of listening to Scott Westerfeld explain, AGAIN, all the events and people from the last three books I JUST read.

It's time to move on.

Books two and three in the Imposters series, set in the same world as the Uglies trilogy but deeper into the future. This story picks up where book one, Imposters, left us. Identical twins, Frey and Rafia, have switched identities and are fighting to survive the aftermath of their father’s fury.
I couldn’t put book two book down and immediately moved on to book three. This is an action-packed series of political intrigue set in a high-tech, AI, future.
I absolutely love a good science fiction story and Westerfeld is an exceptional writer. These are stories that grab you and don’t let go.
I thought this was a trilogy but the very last sentence of book three made me gasp, and I cannot believe I have to wait until next March for what will be THE most highly anticipated book ever! OMG! You should read them all.

I always thought this would be a trilogy... but the ending certainly leaves a strong possibility that there will be another story... so who know? (No, that wasn't a spoiler. I didn't reveal anything other than saying another book seems likely. That could be true even if all our main characters suddenly burst into flames, as long as the author revealed something else at the end that raised questions.)

I did like that this book helped solidify a little better where some of these cities are compared to our current world. It is maybe dumb, but I like that connection.

Very fast paced both in terms of the read, and the actual time passing in the book. The beginning has some flash backs, which isn't my favorite way to tell the story. Overall though a great next installment in the series.

Ugh I have been looking forward to this book for over a year!! Already starting it just was honestly confusing and not holding my attention at all. Too many characters and the ones you care about weren’t fleshed out enough. Col’s character was so bland in this book, which is so disappointing because I LOVED him in the first two books. THE MAIN THING I WAS EXCITED FOR AND REASON I KEPT READING GOT RUINED AND I AM NOT HAPPY 😭 I sadly don’t think I’ll be reading the next one, which is disappointing because I loved the first two!
