When a killer strikes just before flan time, beloved food critic Hayley Snow is forced to sniff out the killer before someone else bites the dust.

Hayley Snow, fiery food critic for Key Zest magazine, has just landed a ticket to one of the most prestigious events in Key West: a high-brow three-day conference at the Harry Truman Little White House. Even though she’ll be working the event helping her mother’s fledgling catering business, there’s plenty of spicy gossip to go around. But just before her mother’s decadent flan is put to the test, Key West’s most prized possession, Hemingway’s Nobel prize gold medal for The Old Man and the Sea, is discovered stolen from its case.

Unsavory suspicions point to Gabriel, a family friend and one of the new busboys working the event, who mysteriously goes missing moments later. Anxious to clear his name, Gabriel’s family enlists Hayley to help find him, but right as they begin their search, his body is found stabbed to death in the storeroom.

Hayley has no shortage of suspects to interrogate and very little time before the killer adds another victim to the menu in national bestselling author Lucy Burdette’s delectable eighth Key West Food Critic mystery, Death on the Menu.

This is a cozy mystery, and this is book 8 in the Key West Food Critic series. This book review is a hard one for me to write because I loved the mystery and storyline/plot, but I hated the characters. I found I really did not care about the characters. I would say the series is worth a try if you like cozy mysteries.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Key West is a place steeped with history. Whether it be the Harry Truman Little White House or the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, both are huge tourist attractions. We visit just in time for a conference bringing a Cuban delegation to Key West to celebrate the similarities and differences hoping to forge a path of working together. Hemingway’s Nobel prize medal has been brought to town to be put on display with other treasures during the conference. Hayley’s mother has been hired to cater the food for the event. Hayley and Miss Gloria have been recruited to help serve. Hayley’s boyfriend Nathan would like the ladies to stay away from the conference. His intel says they may be trouble with all the protestors. But Hayley assures him that security is tight and they will be safe. Then the Nobel prize is stolen and one of her mother’s employees is missing. An all out search doesn’t find the medal but the employee is found in a storeroom, stabbed with a kitchen knife. Someone that passed through security has to be the killer, which means everyone. With suspects galore Hayley dives right in to find the murderer and hoping when she does she will find Hemingway’s prize too and ease the tension with the guests from Cuba.

This story has a slow build as the author introduces all the history and reasons for the conference. Hayley is still working on stories for Key Zest but isn’t in the office much. She spends most of her time with her mother getting food ready and serving. I missed the interaction with the other people at Key Zest. That being said there was so really cool guests to the conference. Jimmy Buffett and Barack Obama surprised the attendees with their appearances. I enjoyed Hayley supporting her mom and going above and beyond to make the event a success. Miss Gloria is always entertaining. I wish I had her energy.

After the body is found the pace picks up as both the police and Hayley need to catch the killer before the conference ends. For Hayley, that means being in the right place at the right time and keeping her ears open. With several twists and a keen insight, Hayley makes a discovery that blows the whole case wide open. I really enjoyed tagging along for this one.

After the killer is caught and the characters get back to their Key West lives the story ends in a way that had me smiling ear to ear and very excited for the next book in this series. I hope we don’t have to wait too long.

By the time you reach the 8th book in a series, the characters and the place have evolved in so many ways. To really enjoy this story I recommend reading the prior books first. Miss Burdette does provide some background details because of the publisher change, but to really know Hayley Snow, you need to start at the beginning.

Death on the Menu by Lucy Burdette is A Key West Food Critic Mystery. Hayley Snow is helping her mother cater a three-day event at the Harry Truman Little White House in Key West, Florida. Catering the Cuban/American conference is a coup for her fledgling business. Nathan Bransford, Hayley’s boyfriend, would prefer if Hayley bowed out since it is a controversial event and protestors will be present. On the first day of the event, Hemingway’s Nobel prize gold medal for Old Man and the Sea on loan from Cuba disappears. It is the first time the medal has ever left Cuba and the Cuban delegates are outraged. Despite searches of the house and staff, they are unable to locate it. That night as the flan is being served, Gabriel is found stabbed to death in the kitchen closet. Gabriel’s family asks Hayley to investigate his death and get justice for the family by finding his killer. Despite Nathan’s objections, Hayley plunges into the case. Miss Gloria and Hayley are worried about the houseboat for sale next to them. The last tenants were party hearty types that continually disturbed the residents of Houseboat Row. Plus, Hayley has articles to write for Key Zest magazine and little time to sample the local Cuban cuisine for her critique. Hayley is in for a busy weekend in Death on the Menu.

Death on the Menu contains good writing and engaging characters. Lucy Burdette does a wonderful job at world building. She includes various shops and sites in Key West. Her descriptions bring the area alive. I do not recommend reading Death on the Menu without having read An Appetite for Murder which will give you an introduction to Hayley, her friends, her job, and the area. I liked the inclusion of Key West history and information about Ernest Hemingway (adds to the world building). There are some lovely cozy moments in the story along with tasty food descriptions. I am a fan of Miss Gloria and I envy the pair living on a houseboat (except when a hurricane is approaching). I like Miss Gloria’s love of sequins (it is cute) and Hayley’s love of high top tennis shoes (I adore my Converse and have them in different colors/prints). While I am not a fan of Nathan, he does do something at the end that puts him a better light. I did feel that Death on the Menu is a slow starter and the pace throughout the book was slow. The mystery was interesting, but I wish it had been more of a challenge to identify the guilty party. I felt that some details were missing from the story (what is the mother’s name and the name of her catering business for example). There are recipes included at the end. They include Cuban roast pork, black bean soup, mojito cake and flan. I thought the ending was sweet, romantic and upbeat. Join Hayley Snow on her latest sleuthing adventure in Death on the Menu.

I was actually a little disappointed with this one. I read to escape reality and I felt like the author put quite a bit of real-life views and issues into this one. The murder mystery was kind of all over the place at times and the ending was unclimatical for me. I still enjoy reading about these main characters and hope the next book will be better!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This only the second book I have read by the author. It would have been better if I had read the early books as I had a problem of understanding the characters in the story. I will look for more of her books to read. Haley Snow is a writer for the Key Zest magazine is helping her Mother to cater for a prestigious conference between the Key West and Cuba.
officials. The event is being held at Harry Truman Little White House. The information on Harry Truman and Ernest Hemingway added to my knowledge of these figures in U. S. history. The first night Hemingway's gold medal was stolen and a busboy, Gabriel was murdered. His family is afraid the cops will close the pinning the crime on Gabriel because of his color the asked Harley to find the medal and his killer. Will Harley succeed? Longtime fans and will like the ending and it brought a smile to me.
I recommend this book. Good sounding Cuba recipes are included.

When Nathan gave Harley the gift of the key for the vacant boat on houseboat row to live next door to Miss Gloria. I cried. Then the proposal. 😲 omg!!!! The murder and the families history was so sad. So happy it ended like it always does. The victim gets justice and Hailey is happy ☺

This is the first book I have read in the Key West Food Critic Mystery series, but I had no problem following the story of figuring out the characters. The backdrop for this mystery is a Havana/Key West conference with the hope of developing some business and economic partnerships. During the opening event of the conference, there is the theft of an important Cuban artifact as well as a murder which causes many of the delegates to boycott other events. The murder victim;s family has asked Hayley to find out what happened to him, and she can't resist to do some sleuthing. There was quite a bit of political undertones to the story that involved the cuban population in the US as well as the anger from Cuba toward the American Government allowing these refugees to remain in the country.

Hayley Snow is a food critic for a magazine in Key West, FL. She finds herself investigating this case much to the chagrin of her boyfriend and Detective Nathan Bransford. I liked the character of Hayley. She's funny, headstrong, smart, a great daughter and friend. She is helping her mom with the catering during the three-day event and when she is asked to help with a different activity, she jumps right in, of course getting information is always a motivator as well. There is also a personal story going on as well, with Hayley's friend and neighbour Miss Gloria worrying about what will happen with the houseboat next to them. Hayley also has her magazine writing to do so she is kept hopping in this one. Death on the Menu contains good writing and engaging characters. Lucy Burdette has done a great job with the setting of Key West, including various shops and sites. Of course, no story set in Key West would be complete without mention of Ernest Hemingway. The story itself was a bit slow for me. It had a lot of build up to the reveal, but just never really pulled me in like I had hoped. I also figured out the culprit relatively early in the story, which might be why I did not enjoy it as much as others. Because I enjoyed the characters and setting, I will give another in this series a try, perhaps going back to the beginning might benefit me.

I had only read the first Hayley Snow book and it's been quite awhile so pretty much all these characters were new to me, but I really loved the chemistry between Hayley and Nathan! Heck I'm giving this 5 stars mainly because the author's writing and plotting is excellent and I absolutely loved the killer showdown/sting and the happy ending to the book.

I wasn't particularly interested in the premise of the Havana/Key West conference since I am not interested in politics or government especially in a cozy mystery, but I did realize that some of the history being told did have to do with the outcome of the book and finding the real killer. I am definitely going to go back and read through the first book again and start making my way through this series. I really do love Hayley, she's funny and smart, she's sometimes a train wreck waiting to happen...but she's a great daughter and a fiercely loyal friend. I want to read her journey that got her from just getting a recipe column in a small paper and ending up accused of murder, to where she is today in her career and to the point of the ending of this book, which again was so darn awesome! I am dying to tell someone but I won't, since it would spoil it for those who have read the series in order (like I usually want to do-reason follows).

I was provided a hardback copy of this book to read and review from the publisher via a review group I'm in. My opinions are my own, I didn't promise to love it but I guess it turned out that I did!

Death on the Menu is the first book that I have read in the series and probably would have been better had I read at least the first in the series but I felt that the author did a good job of adding background information so that I wasn't lost.
Hayley Snow is a food critic who works for a local magazine, Key Zest, in Key West, Florida. Her mother, Janet, owns a catering business and Hayley helps her out when needed. Janet has scored a big job catering food for a weekend conference working on Cuban-American relations that take place at the Harry Truman Little White House that President Truman had built for a vacation place. The event is controversial because many Cubans who had to flee their homeland during Castro's regime have bitter feelings and don't want relations to improve. On display are many artifacts, some already at the museum and others sent over by the visiting group. Ernest Hemingway had ties to both countries but spent more time in Cuba and when he won the Nobel prize, he gave it to the people of Cuba. It has been in safe keeping in a convent in Cuba since. Dignitaries started meeting in the morning of the first day with heated debates that escalated when the medal goes missing. Later that day, one of the kitchen workers helping with the catering job is found dead. Tensions are very high and Hayley does a little investigating of her own even though her boyfriend Detective Nathan Bransford would like for Janet and Hayley to not do the job of catering.
This is a mystery that kept me guessing to the end and the killer was a surprise to me. The cast of characters is well developed and realistic. Key West came to life and there is a lot of history in the book along with yummy sounding food. I am going to have to find a Cuban mix (sandwich) soon with a side of black beans and rice. There are some great recipes in the back of the book that I intend to save.
I received a complimentary ARC from Crooked Lane Books through NetGalley. All opinions and thoughts stated are mine only.

Key West is hosting a conference with some leading dignitaries from Cuba, and Hayley Snow’s mom has landed the plumb catering gig, with Hayley among those helping out. The conference is being greeted with protests, and tensions are high. They only get worse when an artifact on loan from Cuba, is stolen. Then a man helping Hayley’s mom is murdered. Are the two events connected?

I have missed this series, and it was so fantastic to be back. This book has now added two more must visit locations on my bucket list trip to Key West, Harry Truman’s Little White House and Hemingway’s house. The politics of the US Cuban relationship is front and center and handled in a mostly even-handed manner. The politics and the drama around the conference to tend to overshadow the mystery at times, especially in the first half. Things do build to a great climax, however. And it was great to see Hayley and her friends again. Fans will be interested to see the latest in Hayley’s complicated love life, and we get to see plenty of Miss Gloria. This truly was a fun visit.

NOTE: I received a copy of this book.

This is the eighth book in the key west food critic series. Hayley Snow works as a food critic for the magazine Key Zest. She is working an event at the Harry Truman Little White house. During the event the gold medal for The Old Men And The Sea is stolen. Everyone thinks the a friend of one of the bus boys is responsible. Hayley sets out to clear his name. Not long after Hayley starts looking into things, the friend ends up stabbed to death. Now Hayley is investigating at murder, that has many people who wanted the victim dead.

I loved reading the Hayley Snow series. I love all the food mentioned in the books and the little information the author gives about Key West. I love all the sub characters in the book. They add a lot of life and fun to the story. I highly recommend this book.

Love this series! What's not to love.... Key West, food and a smart heroine. Hayley Snow has a full plate. Besides her regular job as food critic for Key Zest magazine and her agreement to help her mother's big catering gig, she finds herself in the middle of the investigation of another murder. Lots of Key West history, charm and characters liven the book. Plus the descriptions of the food will make your mouth water.

I enjoyed the rich history of Key West in this book. The author describes it so well, I felt like I was there seeing the clear blue water and hanging out at Houseboat Row. That is such a fun name and it made me laugh. Hayley is a great character and I loved that she was so involved in the community. When she is asked to help her mother cater for the prestigious conference located at the Harry Truman Little White House, I knew trouble was around the corner.
The book is filled with information about Cuba and its culture. It made me realize how people have been mistreated and that like everyone in the world want a better life for their family. The story does take on some serious issues that really enhance the book. I am impressed with how elegantly the author uses characters to highlight a culture that is rich in history.
As the conference is to begin a big ruckus breaks out. The coveted Hemingway's Noble prize gold medal has disappeared. There is a long list of suspects but one name can be marked off. Gabriel is found dead which leads his family to prove his innocence in the missing gold medal and to find out who is behind his death. Haley is going to have her hands full trying to help serve food at the event while trying to investigate a murder and missing medal. I really like the author's style of writing with details that bring readers right to the action. There is a wonderful cast of characters that will keep the story intriguing.
Haley starts to get close to who the killer is when someone else is injured. The background story of Gabriel was impressive. I loved reading about his parents and how his mother risked everything for her family so they could have a better life. The way that the murder is solved was so brilliant and I loved how the author used her knowledge of Key West and Cuba to make a story that kept me on the edge of my seat. I now have a craving for Cuban food. The author has included recipes at the end which I intend to try. I was surprised at who ended up being the killer and why they did it. This is a must read for all mystery lovers.
I received a copy of this book from The Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours. The review is my own opinion.

Lucy Burdette’s Death on the Menu is a quick cozy read with a likable heroine, delicious Cuban food, and an intriguing mystery. However, the plot could have been better crafted and I wish there was much less focus on the romance between Hayley and her detective boyfriend. This is the eighth instalment in the Key West Food Critic mystery series but it can be easily read as a stand-alone.

Our protagonist is food critic Hayley Snow who is helping her mom with the catering at the prestigious Havana/Key West conference. The event quickly turns controversial with tensions brewing between the Cuban and American guests. Before dinner is even served, someone steals Ernest Hemingway’s Nobel Prize gold medal. Gabriel, a helper at the event, becomes a suspect. However, he is soon murdered. Gabriel’s family enlists Hayley to help clear his name and solve his murder. Hayley’s plate is overflowing. Will the murderer strike again? Can her mother’s catering business survive? Is she ready to take the next step in her relationship? And just who is moving in to the house boat next door?

Hayley is one of my favorite cozy protagonists. She’s brave, smart, and relatable. I also adore her sidekick, the spunky octogenarian Miss Gloria. However, I’m not a fan of Hayley’s relationship with her detective boyfriend, Nathan. I hate his patronizing attitude towards her. I also think that Burdette focused too heavily on their relationship drama.

The mystery is decently paced and has some interesting twists. However, I wish the plot had been a little more developed. The big reveal could have been better written. I also don’t think the murderer’s motives and behaviour were as clear and well-thought out as they could have been. The ending felt very rushed to make time for the relationship drama between Hayley and Nathan.

Death on the Menu is a fun cozy mystery with a great heroine, nice twists, and lots of mouth-watering food. I love the vivid descriptions of the locations, people, and history of Key West. I especially like the inclusion of Cuban recipes at the end of the book. Although I wish the plot was better crafted and the romance was less present, this book is a great addition to the series. I can’t wait to read more about Hayley’s sleuthing and cooking in Key West!

Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this book in exchange for an honest review.

In this 8th book in the series food critic Haley Snow is helping her mom with a catering gig at an important event.  The event is to bring together Key West and Cuba.  But when an important artifact goes missing and there is a murder on the first night of the event, the catering gig may be a bust.  Of course Nathan Haley's hunky detective boyfriend warns her to stay away from the investigation.  But when the family of the deceased ask for help, Haley can't resist.

This is the first book in this series I have read.  I think as a reader I should have read the books before it.  I felt like it would have helped me with getting to know the characters better, gave them more depth.  I especially would have loved to know the whole story behind how Haley came to be in Key West.

I enjoyed reading this cozy mystery.  It had a little bit of everything in it.  It had danger, mystery, love, friendship and family.  This book had tons of interesting and highly entertaining characters.  It was a steady paced read that will keep you guessing till the end.  The only thing I really did not like was the political aspect of the story.  I find that story line a tad boring and overkill.  But the book did have a lot of interesting history behind it to make up for it.  The ending was wonderful and I even cried a bit.  Yes I cried!  I am such a baby.

Overall this book was a great cozy read.  It includes some really good recipes in the back of the book, that I must try.  Yummy!!!  I would love to read more of these books and get to know Haley and the gang a bit more.  So if you like Jimmy Buffet and a good dose of who done it, then this book is for you.  Pick it up today.

Death on the Menu by Lucy Burdette is the 8th book in the series featuring Hayley Snow, Key west food critic.
This story involves the Key west/ Havana conference and tension runs high when the famous noble prize medal belonging to Hemingway disappears. No sooner is the missing medal reported, that a dead body is found, and rumors that the missing medal and the murder are somehow connected.
Even though Hayley is warned against investigating, she cannot help herself and she tries to piece the mystery together.

This story wasn't as exciting for me and I was a bit disappointed. There were times that the story grew stale and it lacked the laugh out loud moments that I have come to love about this series.
My rating is more of a 3.75 star for this book.
I volunteered to read an ARC of this book offered by the publisher and NetGalley.

I was so excited to see this series back and in action! This book found me right back at home with all of the characters that I held near and dear. Still funny, still crazy, still utterly charming! The setting was written to perfection, the mystery itself was perfect, I loved the backstory and the history. I am so happy this series is back and better than ever!

Once a-glorious-gain I get to walk the streets of my favorite vacation place, Key West, Florida. Food critic Haley Snow is back in the eighth installment of the series, and I am deeply, hopelessly in love with Death on the Menu, as I have been with every book in this series. Forget Fodors or Frommer's or Lonely Planet to guide you on the perfect Key West trip. Author Lucy Burdette has given you the lowdown on places and food for this paradise with Haley Snow as your always entertaining, ever curious guide. Having been to Key West multiple times, I can assure you that you are walking the streets and meeting the people and eating the food with an authenticity second to none.

So, at this point in the series, Haley has grown more confident in her place on the island and in life. She no longer second guesses her decision to make her home in this paradise, and she is getting a handle on all the multi-tasking she does. Of course, that doesn't mean that our dear Haley doesn't find herself in the middle of messes. That is, after all, one of her talents. But, she has a more secure support system, too, with her boatmate Miss Gloria on Houseboat Row, her catering mother and stepfather, her boyfriend Nathan Bransford of the Key West Police, her other Key West Police connection Lt. Steve Torrence, her Tarot co-conspirator Lorenzo, Bill and Eric of the cute conch-style house, and her co-workers at Key Zest online magazine. I have to mention these other characters because they have become so important to the success of this series and to Haley being able to, well, be Haley. Add to this supporting cast, the fascinating new characters in Death on the Menu, and you have a, yes, a smorgasbord of delicious bites.

Of course, there is crime, murder to be more specific, and each Key West Food Critic Mystery highlights a different part of the fabulous island for the setting of that murder. Death on the Menu takes on an international flavor in a highly anticipated event of a Cuban/Key West conference held at the Harry Truman Little White House in the Truman Annex section of Old Town in Key West. One of my favorite places to visit there, the history of the place embraces you and enchants you, taking one back to the style of the 1950s, especially appropriate for a delegation from Cuba to meet with a delegation from Key West about improving relations. Time stopped in the 50s for Cuba and the United States, and renewing it needs a special place to begin. Haley's mother, Janet, has been awarded the catering contract for the three-day event, and everything is riding on a successful show for Janet's business, and Haley jumps in to help her mother with working for her. In fact, there are multiple people who need the event to succeed for financial reasons, including Haley's friend Bill and his boss, who run the Truman Little White House. But, not everyone is in favor of the conference, especially some from the Cuban community of Key West who remember how cruel the Castro regime was to them and family members. And, there are some in attendance who are harboring deep secrets that could mean complete devastation or reclamation to their lives.

The first day of the three-day conference turns out to set the tone for the event, and it's not a good one. A treasured possession that Cuba, or the Catholic church in Cuba where it was kept, loaned to the event, Hemingway's Nobel Prize gold medal for The Old Man and the Sea, is discovered missing even before the first dinner is served at the Truman Little White House. A tense dinner does ensue, but a further discovery of a dead man in the storage closet off from the kitchen sets the story off to a thrilling whodunnit and why. The murdered man, Gabriel, is the brother to one of the island's Cuban residents who Janet had hired as a sous-chef because of woman's famous secret flan recipe. Gabriel was on site to help with the reception and dinner, and his sordid end raises suspicions that he was involved with the stolen medal. When Gabriel's family asks Haley to help clear Gabriel's name, she becomes determined to find out why someone who seemed so unlikely a target of murder would become one and restore his good name. Trying to keep within the parameters of not interfering with the police investigation, something important to her romantic relationship, is a tricky challenge, and, of course, Haley stays squarely in the middle of it all, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Because this series revolves around food, I think the best way I can describe Death on the Menu is by using the author's own words when talking about the Cuban Mix Sandwich. "Pickles, yellow mustard, Swiss cheese, ham, and pork--the ingredients were simple but the end product, more than its parts." Translating this description to the book's, the ingredients, such as characters, plot, dialogue, setting, word choice/phrasing, may all seem the stuff of ordinary life, which they are, but put together (with the author's magic touch, of course), the result is a delight that you don't want to miss. Or, a shorter version might be, come for the food, but get a great story to boot.

Hayley Snow is back, and better than ever, even though she's juggling love, murder, helping her mother's catering business, strained Cuban-American relations, and a missing Hemingway medal.

Her mother's new catering business landed a big-deal contract for a summit held on Key West to help Cuban-American relations. If it goes well, the business takes off; if it fails, so does the business. There's a lot at stake. Hayley pitches in, even as she wonders where her relationship with Nathan, a local detective, is headed.

Tensions are high among the factions, and it's not helped when one of Hemingway's medals, on loan for the summit, vanishes, and one of the Cuban-American catering staff is found dead.

Hayley is smart and stubborn. She is like a terrier with a bone, when she gets an idea, and determined to follow through. She also gets a lesson in the privileges that come with her skin color, and the challenges faced by the Cuban Americans on both sides of the issue of opening relations between countries again. Burdette doesn't shy away from the issues; at the same time, it's not heavy-handed or preachy. The information and conflicts are integrated into plot, story, and character. Key West is a vital character in this series; in this book it's more vibrant, immediate, and interesting than ever (especially in the scenes where the Hemingway cats have cameos).

Hayley's intelligence and resourcefulness come back to the forefront of this book (whereas the last couple, it was more about stubbornness). It's a joy to see her shine again, and the series feels fresh and energetic. There are some clever twists, and the ending sets up a wonderful arc for the next books in the series, and it will be fun to watch them play out.

As always, there are recipes. The Mojito Cake is outstanding and about to go on my list of go-to recipes. The Cuban Roast Pork Mojo Style is also scrumptious. I look forward to trying the rest of the recipes, too!

Death on the Menu will delight Burdette's many fans, and, no doubt, enchant a host of new ones to the series.

This latest installment in the Key West Food Critic Mystery series was fun! The setting of Key West was especially fascinating to me, because I've never been there. There were lots of historical details and descriptions of local landmarks, as well as details about Cuban food and culture. I loved the glimpses into Hemingway's time in Key West. The main character, Haley Snow, is a likeable, down-to-earth character. I especially liked the character of Haley's mom, she reminded me of my own mom! The mystery was creative and kept me guessing, without being overly complicated. This is the eighth book in the series, but the first one I've read. I had no trouble keeping up with the cast of characters and their developing relationships. A great summer read!

What is nice about cozy mysteries is they are safe and predictable. That same thing makes them basic and forgettable. I need a more interesting main character than this book offered. I also want more quirky and likeable locals. What they did get right was the location. I love Key West and it is a great setting. I didn't realize this was book 8! Don't know that I will go back to the beginning.

“Death on the Menu” is the latest installment in the Key West food critic series by Lucy Burdette. In this story, Hayley Snow helps her mom cater a conference between American and Cuban dignitaries. During the dinner, it is discovered that Ernest Hemingway’s Nobel prize gold medal for The Old Man and the Sea has been stolen. Then, the body of one of the servers at the dinner, Gabriel, is found in a closet - stabbed to death with Hayley’s mom’s best kitchen knife.

I really enjoyed this book. Hayley is an appealing character and one that I enjoyed spending time with. She has a self-awareness that I liked. I also liked the supporting characters, particularly Miss Gloria, Hayley’s eighty-something roommate, Hayley’s mom, and Hayley’s boyfriend, Nathan Bransford, a police detective. All of these characters add their own voice to the story.

The author is skilled at adding enough details so that readers new to the series aren’t lost. I had not read any of the previous stories, and from some of the references in Hayley’s narration, I suspect that she has undergone some growth from book one to this book. Another reason for me to like her!

Probably the best part of the book for me, though, was how Lucy Burdette presented points of view about the conflict between Cubans and Americans. Without involving politics, she manages to explore both sides of the story and evoke understanding for each position. She also never looses sight of the mystery or the colorful characters that populate Key West. A pretty impressive feat, in my opinion. And all the mouth-watering Cuban inspired recipes at the end of the book don’t hurt either!

Bottom line: If you are a fan of this series, you will love this book. And if you have not read any other books in this series, this book will make you want to go back and find out about Hayley’s previous adventures.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This is my first venture into The Key West Food Critic Mysteries. It was my first time reading Lucy Burdette’s writing. I received a hardback review copy through a review club on Facebook. The opinions expressed are my honest thoughts.

In the opening of the book we get a bit of information on Cuba and the US relations and history. I’m not into politics and I debated jumping it or at least speed reading it. Don’t make that mistake. It’s there for a reason. Honestly I found it to be more interesting than I was expecting. I did spend a bit of time remembering a friend I had years ago, especially when I read about Carmen’s husband crossing. My friend’s husband came over from Cuba during the sixties. I was reminded of his stories of what his childhood Cuba was, his adventure coming here and how he said his life was changed living here. He was always grateful and proud that he was a citizen here. Thinking about him made the story very relatable. Take the time to really read that even if you are like me and not into politics so much. It is relevant to the story.

This is the eighth book in the series. I was expecting that I missed a lot, especially in regards to the characters and relationships. I was surprised to find that I was able to jump right in. The author is excellent at weaving in the important characters and their relationships. As I was getting acquainted with everyone, I thought that it was so well done that I could have read all eight books and not really noticed she was catching up new readers. That was one of the best jobs I have seen in combining the information in a way that was relevant to both types of readers. I enjoyed many of the characters in this book. They have invested me in the series, making me want to read the previous books as well as new ones.

The mystery itself was well written. There were many possibilities thrown out at the reader. I was deceived more than once thinking it was this one or that one. The author did well in leading me on a chase. Like I said above the politics play a part but the author did well humanizing it. I was enthralled and, as the pace picked up, I found myself racing through, truly interested in it all.

Another thing the author is exceptional at is bringing the sights, the smells and sounds alive. She is excellent at descriptions. You will get to know Key West very well. Warning: you will get hungry. But don’t worry. There are recipes at the end of the book. I cut down the recipe for the flan. I don’t have the equipment to make that much flan at once. I would say I also did not have enough people to eat it but the flan is addictive. Ropa Vieja has a lot of ingredients making it look intimidating. Try it. It is easy to follow and taste amazing! The Cuban sandwiches are easy to make and delicious. The Baked Bananas was incredible! I love plantains so this recipe was actually the first one I tried. I haven’t tried the other recipes but I plan to.

I recommend the book. It was a lot more fun to read than I was initially expecting. I plan to read the rest of the series.

I requested this one off of Netgally out of a whim and I am glad I did, I really enjoyed the story.
Let me start off saying I have never read anything from this author and this should also tell you I have never read any other books in the series so I was amazed that I never really felt as if I needed to start with the previous books. I do love hitting standalone in series.

I enjoyed the characters, mystery, and the bit of politics that was added into the mix. The author puts your imagination to work as you about a treasured Cuban award come up missing during the event. The author also gives you quite a few Cuban recipes in the back of the book for you to try.

I recommend this one to anyone that likes a good Cuba/US relations mystery.

DEATH ON THE MENU by Lucy Burdette is the 8th book in the Key West Food Critic Mystery series.

It’s the story of Hayley Snow who works as a food critic for KEY WEST magazine. Her Mom, Janet, has landed the prestigious catering job for the big Havana/Key West conference which is hoped to begin to bridge the gap between the two countries. Although she has many stories to get turned in, Hayley and Miss Gloria, Hayley’s octogenarian roommate who she adores, are up to their elbows assisting in all aspects of the catering job.

On the first day of the 3 day event at the Truman Little White House, one of Hemingway’s prized possession, the Nobel gold medal for “The Old Man and the Sea”, comes up missing. That evening there’s a vast array of entertainment both on stage and off from Jimmy Buffett, Barack Obama and Diana Nyad on stage and off stage the discovery of the missing employee whose been murdered with none other than one of Janet’s knives.

Hayley is enlisted by Gabriel’s family to please help them find out who murdered their loved one so that he’s not just another “brown skin” to be swept under the rug and forgotten. Hayley not only wants to help find the murderer but she wants to keep them safe when the victim’s sister goes missing as well. At the same time, the police are desperate to solve the case and to find the missing medal before the conference is over. Maybe they can work together be it all not planned?

I loved the way the author wrote such a masterful mystery and was still able to weave true facts and history into the story. You can tell she did vast research into everything from the local and celebration foods to the little details of the Truman Little White House. She was able to bring in facts about Hemmingway, Barack Obama and even fun knowledge of the Jimmy Buffett Parrothead. Lucy kept us entertained and turning pages. She made us hungry with delicious food details and then gave us the recipes to satisfy our hunger.

This book can be read as a standalone even though it’s in a series. It’s very easy to figure out who is who and keep up with the wonderful story. I for one, can’t wait for the next installment in this wonderful series and will be checking out other books as well. Recommend this to anyone that loves a GREAT cozy mystery that will have you guessing and second guessing along the way!

Although it seems like it took forever for me to read this book, I am so lucky to have had it given to me. I started to read this book and quickly realized two things. The first was that Haley Snow was a familiar character as I had read a couple of books with her in them and the second was that all the relationships were completely different than in the last book I read. I checked and realized that I had missed the majority of the series. I stopped reading this book, went back and read the others that I had missed and I am so very glad that I did. The progression of the main character's personality and resolve gained natural momentum in each book. It was fantastic to see how the author had built the growth of the character into the story lines with a gentle hand that helped enhance the stories and your connection to the character. It was delightful to spend so much time in Key West with the character, her sidekicks and of course the mysteries....although the food descriptions may have contributed to my sudden spike in growth of my waistline!!! This book is fantastic. I absolutely think that it may be my favorite in the series so far. The mystery was complex and intriguing, but the characters definitely bring to life the book. If I had to say something negative, it would be that the books will leave you with a strong desire to visit Key West, but can that really be a negative??? I absolutely can not wait to revisit Haley and her gang in Key West in the next book. Fingers crossed that the author is working on it now!!!
