3.5 Stars Meant for Love This is the story of Jenny Wilks the 37-year-old current Gansett Island lighthouse keeper with an MBA from Wharton who after 12 years still isn’t over mourning the loss of her fiancée Toby who was killed in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center and Alex Martinez a highly educated and respected horticulturist who is forced to leave his dream job in Washington D.C. to return to the Island to help his older brother Paul run the family landscaping business when his mother’s early onset dementia makes it impossible to continue to run the family business and care for their mother without help. While Jenny’s story is tragic. Made more so by the last phone call from Toby to her, I couldn’t help thinking somehow Syd could get over the loss of her husband and two young children in two years, yet twelve years later Jenny was still struggling with the loss of her late fiancée and love of her life Toby to the point that after a year on Gansett Island the fog of her depression is just beginning to lift allowing her to live a normal life and consider finding love again. I’m not sure which was harder for me to believe? If you call ignoring an Ivy League post graduate degree to take an apparently completely non-demanding job as a lighthouse keeper normal. I say this because in this story Jenny seems to have to spend very little if any time involved in doing whatever duties she’s being paid to perform as the lighthouse keeper. Alex is a devoted son to his widowed mother Marion and good brother to his older brother Paul, but he’s also very angry to be back mowing lawns for a living when he had been working at his dream job under a grant to cross pollinate orchids at the D.C. Botanical Gardens. At 34 he’s also discouraged because he believes his mother’s illness which is incurable and could drag on for years will keep him from returning to the work he loves or have a romantic relationship. No woman he believes is going to want to be involved with a man who is partially responsible for the care of his mother? Why it takes Doctor David Lawrence (the male protagonist from the last book) to suggest they try and hire skilled nursing help from the mainland to help care for their mother is a mystery to me. I’m guessing that nurse, single mom Hope will eventually be Paul’s love interest. It’s also odd that during the interview process no one thinks to ask Hope about the situation between her and her son’s father and if it will effect her ability to live on the Island and care for Marion. . In this story Jenny is rudely awakened very early one morning by the sound of Alex Martinez’s noisy lawnmower, “The Beast” outside her window. It’s a pretty nice meet cute if you can get over what a jerk Alex was for showing up before 6 a.m. to mow the lighthouse lawn. If there’s one thing Marie Force has been fairly consistent with in any of the several books I’ve read of hers across many series, it’s the idea of love or at least lust at first sight which seems to strike all her male and female protagonists when they find their person. Jenny and Alex are no different. Although I confess Jenny came across as a cock tease in their first couple of make out sessions. She certainly went far enough in her response to Alex’s ministrations that it shocked me if not Alex when she told him they weren’t having sex. Which because this is a romantic fantasy Alex seemed to take in stride. It doesn’t take long before these two despite Jenny’s first resistance, to start bumping uglies. And like most of the other couples in this series because it is a fantasy romance they are both insatiable, both capable of going at it all day and night long. Okay, I know Alex is only thirty-four but his sexual stamina would put the energizer bunny to shame and Jenny even though she hasn’t had sex in years, is more than up to the task of satisfying him despite his of course exceptional size which is another feature common to most of the author’s male protagonists. What begins as so many contemporary romances do as just a sexual fling quickly and inevitably becomes much more. Jenny certainly deserves kudos for handling Alex’s unreasonable and out of control jealousy. Although after the stunt he pulled towards the end of this story I thought he deserved to do a whole lot more groveling before she forgave him and took him back. Even though Alex and Jenny are very much the focus of this story like the other books in the series there are other stories going on. Problems arise for Evan and Grace when a powerful country music star rescues his debut album from the bankruptcy of his original label and wants Evan to spend the year touring with him. Grace and Evan can bear the idea of a long separation and Evan has made commitments to people who are helping him start his new recording studio and label on the Island. Kara’s sister Kelly who started a relationship with her long term boyfriend behind her back shows up on the Island intent on blindsiding and confronting her to bully her into forgiving her after Kara has spent the past two years ghosting her. Dan decides its time to put a ring on it and lock her down before he loses her. The girls all plan a raunchy surprise post wedding shower for Tiffany and Blaine. Maddie has a pregnancy scare. But is it? Syd has surgery to reconnect her fallopian tubes in the hope that she and her new husband Luke can start a family. At the same time she fears if she does get pregnant, the loss of her two children will cause her to be an overprotective neurotic mother. If I were giving out individual rating for each book in the series this one would probably receive 3.5 stars. Chance for Love book 10.5 Chance for Love as you can tell because it’s book #10.5 in this series is a novella. We met the male protagonist billionaire Jared James towards the end of the last book as David Lawrence’s normally absentee landlord. He’d come to Gansett Island to lick his wounds after the woman he loved Elisabeth “Lizzie” rejected his marriage proposal. This is one of those rare romances where I actually like the guy more than the girl. I just couldn’t understand Lizzie’s attitude about Jared’s wealth. I know money or at least the chase for it can consume and corrupt people. But she’d been with Jared for more than a year so she knew he wasn’t corrupted by the fortune he’d earned. Yes, he enjoyed the benefits of being rich but he also was kind, thoughtful and generous. He didn’t ask her to give up her work as director of a non-profit serving homeless women and children to live a life of excess and leisure. Her whole attitude like her refusing to allow him to pay off her student loans even after they are married just baffled me. This story takes place 40 days after Jared arrived on the Island. He's become close friends with Dr. David Lawrence and his girlfriend Daisy and through them Alex and his fiancée Jenny. Both couples stories are revealed in earlier books. Anyway, Jared wakes up deciding 40 days of mourning the loss of Lizzie is enough and he needs to get his head out of his ass and start living again. He invites his new friends and anyone else they want to invite to come to a cookout later that night. Lizzie who has regretted the way she rejected Jared’s marriage proposal and hurt him arrives on Gansett Island later that evening. The rest of this novella is Jared and Lizzie who have both learned things about themselves and each other during their separation working their way towards a reconciliation and plans for their future life together. Jared and Lizzie of course have plenty of make up sex and the author even throws in a bedroom scene between David and Daisy who are now living together. Gansett After Dark #1 The Gansett Island series transitions to the Gansett After Dark series with this book. The best I can tell it’s called After Dark which usually implies more sex than found in a normal contemporary romance, because in at least this book there are an awful lot of couples having sex. Owen Lawry and Laura McCarthy and the days leading up to their wedding are the main focus of this story. Before they can say their I do’s they have a few significant hurdles to overcome. Owen and Sarah his mom are scheduled to go to Virginia to testify against her estranged husband Mark and father in her domestic abuse case. I wasn’t overly impressed that none of her other six children were willing to appear in court with them. Owen is an emotional wreck. He hasn’t seen the father he hates in ten years. Laura and his closest friends along with Blaine Taylor the police chief who took her assault report, Doctor David Lawrence who treated her and documented her injuries and Slim the pilot who flew her from the mainland to the Island nearly a year ago are going with them to testify. Everyone else wants to accompany and support them. Owen is both concerned about Lauren pregnant with their twins and suffering with all day morning sickness making the trip. He’s also embarrassed for her and their friends to hear the story of the years of abuse his mother and his siblings all suffered at the hands of their father a now retire Air Force General. The other not so insignificant problem is Laura is still waiting to receive the final divorce decree from her first marriage. This being a Gansett Island book there’s of course plenty more going on in secondary storylines. The McCarthy family makes a shocking discovery which Janey in particular doesn’t react very well to. Stephanie is forced to come clean on why Grant can’t seem to pin her down to set a wedding date. With everyone around her getting either engaged or married Abby who is desperate to be married and start a family is afraid she’s again made a mistake by moving in so quickly with Adam who hasn’t mentioned getting married. Sarah, Owen’s mom and Charlie, Stephanie’s stepdad’s relationship begins to really heat up. Laura’s dad Frank and Betsy go public with their relationship. Seamus and Carolina tie the knot. Janey and Joe make a big decision about their future. Ned is frustrated that he and Francine (now that her divorce is final) can’t seem to find a good time to get married with everyone else seemingly taking every available weekend to get married. Kara and Dan have to put up with her parent’s insistence on throwing them an engagement party which a drunken Jim Sturgil crashes. Just another couple of weeks on Gansett Island. Kisses After Dark In this the 2nd book in the Gansett Island After Dark portion of the series Laura’s younger brother Shane and Owen’s sister Katie fall in love. Shane has been a minor secondary character in several previous stories. He’s come to Gansett Island to help his sister Laura get the Sand and Surf Hotel restored and worked with Mac on his construction company. Shane is still trying to recover from his broken marriage to Courtney who hid a serious opioid addiction from him, left him close to broke and then asked for a divorce after he stuck by her and paid for rehab for her. In the last book Katie Lawry who is on the Island for her oldest brother Owen and Laura’s wedding nearly drowns in a swimming incident when Shane saves her literally minutes before the wedding. In their brief interactions its clear there was something there between them. In this book Shane will have to overcome the baggage of his previous failed marriage and Katie will have to overcome the baggage of growing up in a dysfunctional family headed by a verbally and physically abusive father that has kept her at now 32 years old from ever going on a date or being kissed. Along with Shane and Katie’s drama this story has some rather dark or sad moments as a single mom is diagnosed with a fatal disease and Maddie suffers a health crisis that rocks her’s and Mac’s marriage. There are of course happy moments too as Grant and Stephanie along with Owen and Laura get married and a couple of other women discover they’re pregnant. There’s plenty of sex as even the older generation in the form of Frank and Betsy and Charlie and Sarah have their own sex scenes.
Sweetness, tenderness, and yes, a big dose of sex. Alex and Jenny are a great addition to the "family" of couples in this series. 💑
A CHANCE FOR LOVE 💘 Short but sweet with plenty of heat 🔥
GANSETT AFTER DARK 💘 This is a great addition to this epic series. It's so much more than just Laura and Owen's HEA. It's about what's happening in the lives of just about everyone we've met so far on Gansett, as well as introducing some new characters.
KISSES AFTER DARK 💘 This is mainly Shane (a McCarthy cousin) and Katie's story. They've both been deeply hurt before, but in different ways... Can they put the past behind and build a new life together?....
Before starting this box set, it had been about two years since I last read a Gansett book, and I very much enjoyed becoming reacquainted with these amazing characters of Gansett. This series is a continuing saga, with all characters continuing to be an integral part of each book. I'm surprised I haven't gotten bored with it yet and I attribute that to good writing and especially great characters. IMO it just keeps getting better and better. Yes, there is plenty of sex, but there's sweetness and tenderness too. I think what is keeping me so interested in this series are the strong relationships not only between each of the couples, but also among all the characters, young and older, in this tight-knit community and their different stories.
The books don't end in cliffhangers, so you can stop and start up again anytime. I'm still wanting more, so this reader intends to continue.
A simply fanfreakingtastic read. Each book although connected stands lovingly on its own. No one character is perfect. Some more flawed than others. The series is based on this one family, friends and the people they fall in love with. This small island is filled with love, hope and faith at times. Each story is messy, passionate, dramatic and angsty. But in the end its oh so real and binge worthy.
I chose this rating because this was actually an amazing series. I really enjoyed all of the characters. There was some great stories. I love the way they interact with each other the cousins, the brothers and sister, the uncles. I love all the stories from Gansett Island. Great read! I recommend this book to all romance readers. This is An amazing series I am really enjoying it..
Enjoying this Gansett Island series very much. Some of the characters more than others. But all in all can’t stop reading about the island. Would love to go and see it. Just not in the winter.
I love these books and the island and people in them. The living and caring between family and friends just goes on and wraps its arms around the reader too. Can't wait for the next book!
Love this island and all it’s inhabitants. The McCarthy family continues to grow in love and sorrow. Strong characters and community situations make this so realistic. Leaving you wanting more.
I love these characters and feeling that I am becoming part of the island. I could do with less of the graphic sex and find myself skimming past it. Hence the 4 stars rather than 5. Looking forward to the next books!
I love all the books Gansett Island it's a wonderful series with drama a d love and a little bit of mystery. It will remind you of the world around you. You just never know what is next.
I enjoyed this book about Jenny and Alex. It's the first love story I've ever heard of that started off with a tomato being thrown at the man, but it works for them. Alex woke Jenny with his lawnmower and made her angry enough t0 throw a tomato.
They meet and have a rough time at first, but it's almost love at first sight. Jenny has a harder time falling then Alex because of Toby.
Chance For Love
I enjoyed this story about Jared and Elizabeth or Lizzie. Jared proposed and Lizzie turned him down as far as Jared is concerned but Lizzie never actually said no. When Lizzie goes to find Jared on Gansett Island she finds him with two good looking blondes in his pool.
After clearing up the misunderstanding Lizzie and Jared actually discuss the marriage proposal and what happened. Then Jared bides his time for the next proposal and Lizzie says yes. Then they start their lives on Gansett Island.
Gansett After Dark
I enjoyed this book about Owen and Laura. Oewen is the survivor of domestic abuse and he's doing okay. He meets Laura outside his grandparent's hotel the Sand N Surf. He hires her to renovate the hotel. Then he learn's she's pregnant.
Owen is drawn to Laura and he watches over her during her norning sickness and throughout her pregnancy. Owen's mom gets beaten up by her husband and comes to Owen. He takes care of her too.
Kisses After Dark
I enjoyed this book about Katie and Shane. Shane starts off by rescuing Katie from a rip tide. She is grateful but she's afraid of men thanks to her father. Shane is interested in Katie and wants to date her but she's fighting it until her sister get involved.
Shane finally gets Katie out and they have a wonderful time. Katie is still afraid of being with a man, but curiosity wins out.
