In his book, Chas Bogan provides the reader with what I believe may be the first of its kind resource on the rituals, practices and craft of the American folk-magick traditions. As a practicing Conjure doctor, founder and teacher at Mystic Dream Academy, and owner of The Mystic Dream store, in San Francisco, Bogan’s insights into the many iterations of American folk-magick are truly unparalleled.

While there are other books treating the subject of Conjure, Hoodoo and American folk-magick, Bogan’s work stands out as one of the few that successfully bridges the distance between the time-honoured “old practices” with a postmodern sensibility, which recognises how those practices remain relevant to today’s practitioners of magick, root-work, Hoodoo and the like.

There is a certain elegance in his fluid transitions between Appalachian folk-magick, Pennsylvania “Dutch” (German) Pow-Wow, Hoodoo and Southern folk-magick, which I could only interpret as evidence of his own keen mastery of these practices.

“I stand at the crossroads. The fullness of the moon, the chill of the west wind, and the hoot of an owl in the distance all conspire to create an atmosphere for magic. From around my neck, I remove the amulet I wear when doing work at the crossroads, made from two crossed skeleton keys, tied together at the center. They represent the crossroads themselves and further symbolize the keys to spiritual mastery…”

The Secret Keys of Conjure
by Chas Bogan

The book is well-organised, and includes a broad range of ritual, charms, Hoodoo recipes, and background history. I was immediately taken by the thoughtfulness, respect and recognition given to the oppressed communities from which these traditions come, as well as the honour and respect shown to the spirits of the elements involved in the practice of Conjure.

And while a brief read of the text might appear not to reveal any real “secrets”, I would encourage a slower, more deliberate read, in which the title truly delivers on its promise.

I wish this was the FIRST book I read on Hoodoo, Conjure and Folk Magick. I found that a lot of other books such as Sticks, Stones, Roots and Bones just gave you bare basics with some common sense 101. Chas’s book really does a deep dive into Conjure, Hoodoo and Folk Magick that no other book I’ve read on the subject does.
A must read if you’re looking to explore this avenue of your magickal practice. Every Witch should have it on their bookshelf.

A useful book if you are interested in Conjure recipes, but not much more than that. The book felt a bit flat to me, and the author is very insistent about plugging their Modern Conjure brand, which detracted from the book considerably for me.

Great Read, Great Information

I'm glad I decided to read this. I'm of the opinion that all knowledge is good knowledge. The choice on whether or not to apply said knowledge is up to the learner.

Good, a little light on the practical side and a little heavy on the advertisement for Bogan’s shop...but I won’t lie: I want to visit the shop!

Couldn't finish it

Too much rambling and not laid out well. It was very hard to read. I couldn't finish it. Seemed well researched.
