After the boring Maya book I had my qualms. But Davies has an amusing style, and the Aztecs were a mixed bunch of, dare I say, neurotics. I laughed as I read about their "ambush" style of warfare, which meant that however clever they thought they were, the other guy used the same technique, so the winner was whoever gave in to the ambush last. Maybe that's where the term "Mexican standoff" comes from? Then there's the dismay you sense when they discover that against the Spaniards they just keep losing--not because of inferior weaponry (although there's that) but because they're so intent on capturing people alive for their sacrifices that they miss any opportunities to take advantage of the other guy's weaknesses. And whenever they won one round, they celebrated so much and for so long that they usually lost the next day anyway. Poor Aztecs. I only regret that so little time could be spent talking about the Tarascans, who apparently intimidated the Mexica, Texcoco, and other Aztecs so much that they pretty much left them alone. Is there another book about the Tarascans? It sounds like they're a kind of enigma. Hmm.

Extremely interesting. I already knew a bit about Moctezuma II, and the Aztecs immediately preceding their acquaintance with Cortes’ Spaniards. It was interesting to read about how the state/empire of the Aztecs (AKA the Mexica, as would be more appropriate) formed.

This history was written in the 70s, so naturally there are some pretty archaic ways of describing certain things and people groups. But regardless, a really interesting and illuminating read, when you can look past the unironic uses of words like “oriental”, and “primitive”, etc.

Highly enjoyable read, a page turner from the start. The chronology of The Aztecs were written in a very easy, fluid way. The conclusion was quite epic and I felt like I was witnessing the end of an empire. I appreciated the listing of the names of The Aztec gods at the end of the book as it really helped in referring so I don’t get too confused. Great book.

This is a good overview of the Aztec empire from Nigel Davies, a British expat gentleman scholar who enjoyed ancient Meso-american cultures apparently. I may have better books on the empire, but it does have some images I've never seen, and actually a fairly detailed history of Nezahualcoyotl which is sort of an interesting character, in that he is sort of made out to be a poet-king, etc. A good test case for historicity, and really just plain interesting to me.

Well-researched and balanced, with an engaging writing style that made me difficult to put down. Highly recommended.
