She’s his best friend’s little sister and off limits.
College freshman, Finley Farrow, has two fairly ambitious goals this school year: make the football team and get over Shepard Connelly. The gorgeous football player with the magnificent voice would one day be a star on or off the field. But he’ll never see her as more than his best friend’s sister. Now her eye is on the end zone. Making the team could turn out to be the easy part. Practicing with Shepard every day while ignoring her feelings? The real challenge.
Shepard hasn’t had it easy like the Farrows. He won his ticket to the prestigious Layton University through football. Yet his passion lies in music. His killer smile can get him almost any girl he wants, except the one girl he can’t have. Everything he’s wanted to say to her is channeled into his soul wrenching lyrics. But he’s been sitting on the sideline far too long and it’s time to make a move before the team’s starting quarterback wins her heart.
A life altering accusation could fumble everything for him. Most importantly, his big play for the only girl he’s ever wanted.
Family, friendship and love bind them together. Secrets, lies, and rules keep them apart.

I am a sucker for falling for your brother's best friend / friends to lovers romance stories. This book checked both those boxes on my list. It was an okay read for me. I enjoyed it and still I would had changed things if I could🙃
I’ve always enjoyed this authors writing, so she didn’t disappoint. I did enjoy these characters, so many good attributes, I would have added more to help me with this story line and to answer more my own mind. I didn’t enjoy the first half as much as the last half but it all came together nicely.
Shepard & Finley have a journey to happiness. It was fun to go along 🙂
Enjoy this book very much. This is a NA romance. The story of brother's best freind. So it has some forbidden romance to it. I like both Finley ans Ashton. Both of them deserve so much of their HEA.
The story and the plot twist is also good. Although th conflict resolves too quickly. The chemistry is also good and not OTT conversation.
I’m so excited to be back in the Chasing Butterflies series world! Technically this is not a part of that series, but it is in the same world and characters from the other books are mentioned. And Sawyer’s brother Finn is in it! He’s one of my favorite characters. Terri dives into some very important topics that are going on in today’s world and she does it beautifully. I really like her message about not being silent but not accusing innocent people, because it will hurt a victim’s cause in the end(it’ll make more sense when you read the book). There are also some surprises and a little bit of drama and a backstory leading up for the next couple(fingers crossed!)!
I want to share my favorite quote of the book. This is Shepard talking about his feelings for Finley. It makes me completely melt!
“She’s like gold to me, precious and valuable. More, she has a heart of gold and it creates a fire within me every time I look at her.”
Everyone wants to feel special to someone, whether it’s to a spouse, friend, or family member. To be the most cherished person in someone else’s life is an gift. Songs Of Cricket makes the reader feel like this epic kind of love is possible. You just have to be willing to fight for it.
Oh, how much I would love for Shep to write me a song and sing it in my ear... Unfortunately this boy has his sweetheart and she will listen to his serenades. Songs for Cricket is a touching story in New Adult genre, which contains perfectly measured doses of romance and drama. Because without a bit of drama it would be boring, right?
I love everything in this story! We have here from friends to lovers trope, as well as brother's best friend theme. Both characters are afraid to confess their feelings because this way they can not only risk their friendship, but also relationship between Shep and Fin’s brother. In addition to the obvious romance the author also raises an important topic, which is to fulfill your own dreams, not the expectations of others. And also how unpleasant it is when you are judged by the actions of people to whom you are related.
The perfect mix! Young love, a pile of misunderstandings, angsty moments and all of this mitigated by a romantic note, which are songs written for a loved one. I totally recommend!
This was the first book from Terri Laine that i have read and I really liked it. It was a friends to lovers/sports/brother's best friend story. Finley and Shepard grew up together and lived together due to his family issues. They ended up going to the same college and why they were there, some major things went down with Shepard and they had to fight to prove that he was innocent. Once you get started you won't want to put it down. You get sucked into the story and you want to see if they will be able to get their HEA.
Shep's girl sometimes just has to speed him up a little, "I glanced down at her with a crooked smile. “Hopeful. But if you don’t—” Her hand around my ***k was answer enough. “I have to get this on if you want me to eff you.” Shep's girl is often amused by his embarrassment, "she pulled me down for a hug and kissed my cheeks like she’d done when I was a boy. “Mom,” I said, a heat coloring my cheeks. Finley only grinned at my embarrassment." I liked this book, I loved the characters hopefully this is the start of a new series because I want them all to get books.

~ 4 It's All In the Lyrics Stars ~
So I have to be honest I was a little nervous to read this story. Since this is based in the same setting as Terri's Chasing Butterflies series, Layton University, I was afraid this was going to be much like those books.
And in the beginning of this story I thought it was similar. I almost gave up reading it because I was doing more eye rolling than reading, it seemed. But I am thankful I stuck it out, because around 40% this story took on more of it's own feel for me. From that point on I was truly invested in Shepard and Finley's story.
I enjoyed the storyline for the most part. Some of it was predictable and I saw certain things coming before they happened, but how it all played out took me by surprise. I did think that some of the storyline (Billy's part) was kind of unnecessary and just added to much drama for my liking. That is where a lot of my eye rolling happened.
But since I am such a huge fan of Terri's books I had to keep going. I truly enjoyed Finley's storyline, showing that females can do anything they set the hearts to. She showed that what once was a man's sport, can also be for females as well. No matter what her family said. I thought that message alone was strong enough for en enjoyable story.
In this story we meet Finley, Shepard, August and Cooper. They are the next generation of Layton University students. Where the connection to the first group of Layton Students comes in is, Finley, August and Cooper are the younger siblings to Ashton (Craving Dragonflies). Also Finn who is Sawyer's (Changing Hearts) brother is living in the house with the newest freshman. We do get a little but of Sawyer, Shelly and Ashton in this story, but those books do NOT need to be read to enjoy and follow this story.
Finley is determined to come to Layton and make the football team, but she is also determined to move on from her unrequited feelings for Shepard while in college. Shepard is Best Friends with August but has known the family for a long time. Making his growing feelings for Finley dangerous. He has been in love with her for many years but because of his friendship with August has done nothing to pursue her. That is until his chance to make a move might be gone forever. Can these two get on the same page?? Will they find their HEA?? What happens when a life altering situation occurs, can they get through it together?? Read this book to find out.
If you are a fan of a New Adult sports romance novel, then you should give this one a try. It is a standalone novel and told in Dual POV.
Finley and Shepard grew up together; literally in some ways. Due to his father’s convictions Shephard had moved in with the Farrow’s until he finished high school. He was best friends with Finley’s triplet brothers August and Cooper. Finley grew up running with the boys playing football and anything else the boys were up to.
Upon going to college and sharing a town house with her brothers and Shepard, Finley was finally going to take a chance and try out for the football team. She was also ready to deal with her feelings for Shepard. It was her spirit and never gives up attitude that I liked which would also bleed over into the drama that ended up falling into Shepard’s lap.
This book did touch on a subject that is facing many colleges today. It also brought to the forefront that some things are not always as they seem.
This was a book that kept me turning page after page. It took my heart on a ride that I didn’t want to get off and left me with some unanswered dealings with August.
Songs For Cricket by Terri Laine is a falling for your brother's best friend / friends to lovers romance. And I LOVE these type of romances!!
Finley, Shepard, August and Cooper. Head off to college together. And while Shepard has secretly been in love with his best friends August, and Cooper's sister, she's been secretly in love with him. Now that they are off to college all living together will the secrets be revealed? And what happens to the friendships? I really enjoyed Finley and Shepard's story, but at times these two just made bad decisions that caused unnecessary drama.
I really enjoyed this book. And while I haven't read any if the previous books about the people before this, I can honestly say I wasn't lost. I really enjoyed the characters, and the storyline, although at times I felt it was predictable, and lots of unnecessary drama. I am looking forward to the next book in the series! I'm intrigued by August and Cooper!
A Your-Mileage-May-Vary (YMMV) Review With sports and music in the same novel, I thought I’d finally found a New Adult novel that I could come away liking. Unfortunately, Songs for Cricket isn’t going to be that novel.
Songs for Cricket is told in first person POVs of Finley, the young woman who wants to make her college football team, and Shepard, her brother’s best friend who she’s crushed on forever. And this is problematic because the narrative is extremely stingy in providing details regarding other characters, environment, etc.
I really enjoyed this one. It sucked me in from the first chapter. I love an unrequieted love story and a brother's best friend romance. This book was that and so much more!
I listened to the audiobook on Audible. Zachary Webber is a favorite of mine and was wonderful in this. Teri Schnaubelt was very very good. I believe this is my first audio listen of hers and I would recommend her narrations.
I enjoyed this new spinoff to the other series with a whole new set of charactes. Shep and Finley were sweet and while there was some angst it wasn't too much. Looking forward to the next books and hoping we get Finn's too.
There were things about this book I really liked! I am a sucker for sports romance, and this one had a fun twist since it featured a female college football player. There were triplets with realistic sibling dynamics, and some good themes about stepping out of the shadow of your parents and being your own person. The two main characters were sweet and I thought they had decent chemistry.
However, there were others that didn't work for me at all. The book was much more tell than show in terms of character development (there was some cringey internal monologue), and there's a problematic storyline involving a character falsely accusing another of rape (then, the character doing the accusing also turns out to be a person who has spent a significant amount of time in a "mental institution," eek). For me, the things that worked didn't quite outweigh the issues I found with it, though I think there were some good ideas here.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book for review.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Sometimes the tension in a New Adult drives me crazy, because the dumb decisions the characters make based on what they think the other romantic interest is thinking. This story pushed that limit just enough. About the time I was ready to start sighing and getting irritated, things came together.
And these characters are very likable. There are elements here that are new: girl wants to make the football team, girl is a triplet with 2 brothers, boy is a football player who aspires to be a musician.
This book took place in the world of the Chasing Butterflies Series but with the younger generation from Sawyer and the gang. I absolutely loved that we’re brought back to the place where everything started, and even though there were now different characters I still felt the lingering presence of Ashton and the others. Especially since the new group took up residence within the walls where Ashton, Sawyer, Chance and Kelley lived while attending Layton University. And now Finn, Sawyer's brother, was there as well! I’m so excited that he gets the chance to be a bigger part of this series because I’ve always loved this guy so much.
The story was told from Finley’s and Shepard’s POV and I adored them already when I first met them briefly in Ashton’s book. Well, I might have been biased with how much I loved them already before I started reading this book but I was confirmed in my love for them during this read.
'It was most certainly time for me to move on from childhood fantasizes of a father who loved me and a boy I'd wanted to be mine.'
Finley was stubborn but also a very brave and tough girl. I was in awe of her and of how she handled all the pressure and everything she had to deal with as the only girl around the boys.
Shepard was not easy to pin down because he was a great but rather normal kind of guy, he was one to stand back and assess situations first as opposed to August who had a very short temper, and Cooper the recluse who was the quiet and shy kind of guy. When it came to Finley though, all three of them didn't hesitate to stand in front of her for protection. While August and Cooper were her brothers, their friend Shepard has been in love with her for years. Since he didn't know if she reciprocated his feelings and he also didn't want to destroy his friendship with the boys, he'd only been pinning for her from afar.
Like typical teenagers, they didn’t talk about their feelings which led to a lot of misunderstandings and so many wrong conclusions. I loved that Finn was there to be the voice of reason and for the great conversations with him.
Oh to be young again. All the heartbreak and tough decisions. I didn’t envy them and even got frustrated to the point where I wanted to yell at them to just finally tell each other how they felt. Well, of course that would have been too easy and I was sitting on pins and needles until it was time for them to finally be together. Obviously, I rooted for them because I was a fan of them since the very beginning.
I loved the story and couldn't put it down with all the added drama that unfolded. It was nerve-wracking to follow all the lies and false accusation to the point of destroying a person’s life. Thank god for all the friends who had each other's back because that's invaluable.
The book had a familiar feel to it as the characters felt very similar to Ashton, Chance and Sawyer, plus the same environment at the University. But don't let this keep you from reading this book because after a few chapters, it didn't feel that way anymore as it obviously was a different story with different characters.
There were some football games in this book, what with all of them playing, which I loved especially because of Finley and how protective her guys were of her. I don’t know much about the sport but it was well enough explained, so even if you’re not into sports, this was an amazing read you really should consider reading! And if you loved Chance's book, you'll love this one as well.
Cooper the recluse reminded me a bit of Ashton which was probably why I felt an instant connection to him. I love him already and can’t wait for his book especially because this story hinted at August's and Cooper’s coming stories but nothing concrete was revealed.
-- I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book given by the author. --
Ah, young love! The shy glances, the misunderstandings, the angst...what's not to enjoy? I love new adult romances for their young adult conflict paired with very adult sexual situations. It's a coming-of-age type of romance, where they're starting to feel out what a real relationship looks like and figuring out how to navigate "adulting" when it comes to their problems. Mom and Dad aren't there to fix things - you have to figure it out yourself. I loved the two main characters in this story, and it's obvious that the secondary characters are very deserving of their own books. I became invested in all their lives, honestly, and you'll get sucked in too.
Shepard Connelly has loved Finley Farrow ever since they became teenagers and their feelings grew from friends to something more. But Shep lived with her family, and he knew she was off limits, so he kept his distance. Years go by, and now Shep, Finley, and her two brothers are all living in the same house, getting ready to start their first year of college. No parents are around to keep them in check, and with Finley having attracted the attention of the star quarterback on their college football team, Shep is worried he has some major competition. If he doesn't speak up soon, he may lose the change to be with Finley forever.
As I said before, shy glances, misunderstandings, and angst abound in this new adult romance! Poor Shep and Finley - so cute and yet so blind to each other's feelings. You feel the tension between them, and it's a push-and-pull sort of tension, where they come so close to getting together and then something pulls them away. And then, inevitably, they're pushed together again. It's a slow burn due to all the misunderstandings, where they each think the other is interested in someone else, and so the reader will spend several chapters tearing their hair out in frustration. If only they could see what we see! Shep was a sweetheart and such a gentleman. I loved how protective he was of Finley and never forced his attentions on her, even when he wasn't at his best. He wanted her to be happy, even if it wasn't with him. *sigh* Finley was a really confident woman who wasn't afraid to go after what she wanted, even if it meant being the only female on an all-male football team. She proved herself time and time again, and she always took the high road. I really respected her. As the story progressed and things got more difficult for her and Shep, I was happy to see that they both didn't change for other people, and they didn't let opinions sway how they felt about each other.
I can't wait to read what's next for this series! This was my first book by this author, and I loved it. My guess is either Cooper or August will get their books next, but I really, badly want a book for Finn as well. Pretty please?
**I received a free copy via NetGalley and this is my honest review.**
Finley is a part of triplets with her brothers August and Cooper. Also part of the group is their best friend Shepard. They are protective of each other, love each other, their sibling/friendship relationship is something people dream of. It was great reading their experiences and protective nature towards each other.
This book follows them as they enter college. Finley and Shepard love each other but has not admit out loud. Shepard is worried about his best friends August's opinion. He is worried about losing him.
The foursome are on the football team, Finley's dream is coming true, and she is the badass kicker for the football team. I loved reading their games and how her brothers and Shep played and believed in her as much as they did. She held her own truly!
Shep is dealing with a major crisis, and while bad things will bring people closer together, it also places self doubt. I loved these characters. It was really great to see Ashton from a previous book in his siblings book. I can't wait to read about Finn, August and Cooper in future books. Loved Finley and Shep's story.
Finley and Shepard fought their feelings for each other for years and hid it from each other also. But others have seen it and was wondering when they will stop hiding. Except for her brother August. He didn’t know about their feelings until later on and he wasn’t happy that his best friend and sister got together.
But before all that these two were back and forth, drama and they were annoying at times with not seeing each other’s feelings. Then after all the hardship they got together but then there was an incident that tries to separate them. Shepard had a bad upbringing and Finley was from a wealthy family. At times he felt like he wasn’t good enough for her and when that incident occurred he started feeling like she deserved better but she wasn’t having it. Shepard went thru a lot but Finley was there with him every step of the way.
These characters reminded me about characters from other series of which two make a cameo and it brought a smile to my face. I can’t wait to read more on the others. And I think there is still more to Shepard and Finley.
This story will definitely wow you. It is not your typical boy meet girl and they fall in love. This is a story of childhood love that finally finds its way to each other.
Shepard has been faced with a tough life and is forced to live with the Farrows.
Finley is the second of the three Farrows. She is a head strong girl who won’t give up on her dreams.
She is a stubborn girl who gets what she wants and that’s how she becomes the first girl to play on the football team at Layton and she is not giving up her boy crush that easily.
But no story is complete without a bit of drama and that’s exactly what Terri delivers once again in this book.
You be able to put this one down until it’s done. Happy reading.
I am such a fan of the friends to lovers genre. Falling for your brothers friend and having grown up together is always a lovely story of discovery. Finely and Shep are just that couple. You will fall in love with their friendship and watch them make their way towrds one another . Yes as always the little sister is off limits but sometimes fate has a way of taking you places you never imagined . ~~Michele McMullen ~~
5 STARS FOR SONGS FOR CRICKET!! This book will hit all your emotion buttons and the characters are perfect. The story of Finley and Shepard is forbidden, but it is hard when you love someone. There are tough subjects this book hits on, but so worth the read, perfectly executed by this author. You definitely need to 1-Click this book.
Finley Farrow is a triplet, she is off to college with her brothers and their best friend the boy she's been in love with forever. She tries out for the football team and gets the boy. I loved the dynamic of the triplets. Hated the overprivileged girl who causes Shephard trouble when he turns her down. I LOVED Shephard he is my new book boyfriend...SWOON
Great Story & Audible Listen🎧 4.5 Heartfelt Stars🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Songs for Cricket By: Terri E. Laine Narrated by: Teri Schnaubelt, Zachary Webber Series: Butterfly Duet, Book 1
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it is a great story that is not your usual college sports romance. The storylines are interesting and original, they grab you from the start and captivate your mind from start to end. I really liked the characters and how well the author developed them. Finley, August and Cooper are triplets are starting college, they chose to go to the same school and are living together in a town house along with Shepard, August and Cooper’s best friend. I admired Finley’s strength and determination going for what she wants. I appreciated the support she received from her brothers and Shepard, I loved the camaraderie between them. Shepard and Finley secretly crushed on each other but both are afraid to act on it afraid how her brothers & family will react. My one grievance in this story is how long it took for them to act on that crush, it got a bit frustrating. But all is redeemed when they finally do. I loved the chemistry between them from the start, loved how she was his biggest supporter throughout his ordeal. Also loved the camaraderie between the triplets and Shepard too. I highly recommend this story, it is enjoyable and entertaining, there is no shortage of drama, angst, twists, emotions and great romance. This is my first book written by Terri E. Laine and it will not be my last. Thank you for this great story.
I listened to the Audible edition, narrated by the talented Teri Schnaubelt and Zachary Webber who are amazing and entertaining storytellers and voice performers. They bring the characters to life, give each their own voice and personality. They project the emotions of the characters and the drama of the story in their performance. Thank you for another great listen🎧
The next generation of the Chasing Butterflies series continues in Songs For Cricket. Although it is a standalone, the heroine is Finley, the little sister of Ashton, and is set at the same college where the other books took place.
Shephard is the best friend of Finley's triplet brothers, Cooper and August, and grew up with the siblings like he was another family member. He is carrying around some major baggage as a result of his felon father, and while he's been in love with her for as long as he can remember, doesn't feel that he's deserving or worthy enough. She's had feelings for him probably just as long, but it's not until they get to college that either of them act on it. But amidst the coming-of-age story, Shephard is falsely accused of a crime that threatens to not only tear them apart, but ruin the rest of his life.
I liked this story, but I just didn't fall in love with it the way I had with some of the earlier books in this world. There were too many unanswered questions in the story that left me feeling unsatisfied by the end. And the false accusation and how it was resolved/the outcome left a bitter taste in my mouth. Date rape is a hot-button topic and I thought it could have been handled better here. Still,iIt was a fun wink to readers to see the appearances by characters from the other books: Sawyer, Ashton, etc. And like the first set of books, there are seeds planted for future books for this gang, like Cooper and August.
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
“Read” this book as an audiobook, and it was quite nice. Since it’s a dual point of view, there was a male reader and a female reader–first time for me, and it worked (although the male voice sounds much older than the freshman he’s supposed to be…). There could have been some background noises–especially music, as the title refers to Shepard’s hobby–but it’s okay.
As for the story itself, it was a cute one. I enjoyed the kids’ hesitations as well as their passion–for music and/or football as well as for each other. Shepard and Finley are an adorable couple.
I also really liked the twist that endangers everything: Shep is accused of raping a girl he’s been seen with.
It’s a college romance, so there shouldn’t be anything heavy in it, and yet, Terri E Laine chooses to write about girls who break the glass ceiling. Great! The book is also about choices–the ones you make, and the ones you refuse to make, and also the ones that are made for you.
All in all a really enjoyable read!

Although this book is a spin-off from the Chasing Butterflies series, you don’t need to read the previous books to read this one; I’m sure if you did, you would enjoy it better since previous characters are mentioned and make appearances.
This is friends to lovers steamy read.
I have to say I enjoyed this book, the connection between Shepard and Finley was very deep; however, this didn’t stop them from making annoying assumptions about each other. The time old problem of the two characters wanting to be together, but constantly making assumptions about each other and never discussing their problems. Unfortunately this lasted about 50% of the book which made the book a little be of struggle to read in the beginning. However, the whole Lacey situation did bring a lot of drama to their lives.
I did love the fact that Finley was allowed to play football with the guys; of course, it wasn’t easy for her at first but she never gave up. I really thought the Billy situation would have had more attention, but we don’t get much about him afterwards. I also would have liked to have known what happened with Shepard’s father since some events where mentioned.
I want to know more about Finn, I hope he gets his own book, I’m sure it will be interesting.
I wanted shake August because there is obviously something major going on with him and possibly Emily.
I would love to know more about Cooper and maybe Tori.
This is my second book by Terri E Laine, and I am just enamored with her writing. I was a little cautious thinking it may be too young for me, but this romance hits all the points I enjoy in a story. We have the Farlow triplets, and their friend, Shepard going off to start their first year of college. To stay with the boys, and be with Shep, her long time crush, Finley tries out for the football team and makes it. Socially unacceptable to be a girl playing football, Finley finds herself in for a long haul. But to her surprise, Shep is there to protect her. He too has had a crush, but being his best friend's sister has prevented these two from acting on their feelings. When they do, will he have to choose between his best friend and the love of his life? Not only do we have this story line, but the complex character of Shep gives us a whole other story, with accusations of misconduct, manipulation and sheer distress. It's a wonderfully written, compassionate and even a little steamy. Laine is master at his new adult genre.
Teri Schnaubelt and Zachary Webber hit all the emotions in this story. Schnaubelt is amazing. Her voicing of Finley made me remember being in college, feeling that incredible love as well as the hurt and frustration of situations. She made Finley credible and very real.Webber always delivers, and he gives Shep all the feels. He makes it so you know the characters, and feel their emotions. The two compliment each other well and made it a fantastic listen.
Terri E Laine has written an amazing story of love, yes.. but also one the tugs at our social consciousness. She not only wows with a college sports story where a female makes it as a college football player, but one in which a young woman makes it her mission to ruin more than one young mans lives because of a past of not being believed.
Shepherd lives Finley, but is he brothers best friend. He has moment where he realizes that he could lose her, and decides that he needs to make a choice. He chooses, and there are consequences he may have expected, but doesn’t like. In the meantime Shepherd is accused of something he did not do and finds himself being railroaded by a system that he doesn’t have the means to fight. He finds out just how strong he is, how strong Finley is, and how much she is on his ream.
I love this story, and I mean every part! As a young man who could have wanted his accuser to be punished, he showed compassion. As a young man in love, he showed it was real and that he was in it for the long haul. This made me very, very fond of Shepherd. I loved everything about this story and the characters.
Teri Schnaubelt and Zachary Webber were wonderful on this book! Teri Schnaubelt was new to me, and she is very good! Zachary Webber was not new to me and he also did a wonderful job, as always!
