The prophet Jeremiah has been prophesying for nearly 20 years under the rule of Josiah when things start to change. Things have been gradually slipping in Judah in regard to the worship of God ever since Josiah's huge reform campaign many years before, but the official focus has still been on God. Now, though, Josiah decides to try to punish Pharoah Neco for taking his army through Judah's territory, and this decision results in his death. None of his sons have any interest in following God, and the only thing stopping the nation from abandoning God has vanished. How will Jeremiah's efforts to present God's words be received now? God has promised to protect him as long as he obeys, but what exactly does that mean, and can he trust God enough to persist in the fact of danger? And when Nebuchadnezzar attacks Judah, how will the few remaining followers of God fare?
This continuation of the story of Jeremiah's life provides a fascinating glimpse into Jeremiah's courage in standing firm in the face of suddenly increased persecution, and God's faithfulness in protecting and watching over him. The story of Jeremiah's walk with God is one that the Bible gives only hints of, and those hints have been taken and expanded on to provide an idea of what his life might really have been like. It is very clear that the author has done extensive research to provide the background for Jeremiah's life, as well as working out a timeline for many events that are not dated in the Bible, but the research is kept where it belongs, in the background, rather than being used to belabour the reader over the head. The writing is good and easy to read, the content clean and the message present but not overwhelming.
Note that, as part of a series, the book does refer back to previous events in the life of Jeremiah and there is still more to come, but it could be read by itself if readers are interested in focussing on this part of Jeremiah's life, though reading all five volumes in order will provide the richest reading experience.
Overall, this work is an insightful look into the life of a long-ago prophet, an encouragement for followers of God today, and an interesting story in itself, with something of a history lesson thrown in as well. Definitely a book that I would happily recommend to Bible students or to anyone interested in historical fiction.
