Born in Yorkshire, North England, Elizabeth Adler met her husband Richard (an American) while both were working in London. They have lived in England, Ireland, France, Brazil, and the United States and have traveled extensively. They have one daughter and live in Palm Springs, California. Her first novel, Private Desires (also titled Leonie), launched an enormously successful writing career, she also wrote as Ariana Scott. She has now written over twenty internationally acclaimed bestsellers.
An edgy thriller with a man bent on revenge, an unsuspecting chef with a restaurant to run, and a recently retired NYC cop makes for a real page turner. Beautifully plotted, you won't be able to stop turning the pages.
Helmet 7/2024 Kirjassa rakastutaan => 🎧 Elizabeth Adler, Tilaa rakkaudelle 👍
Great story however the proof reader needs to be fired. Terrible errors. It was suspenseful and captivating but disappointed in the errors. One example dunking used instead of thinking*?*
After reading another novel by this author eons ago, I bought a couple of her other books including this, published in 1996...to just now getting around to reading. What a mistake as it is one of the best I've read in awhile.
In the prologue we get a glimpse of Ellie’s happy life until tragedy happens. Then in Chapter 1, we come in on Buck Duveen in a sanitorium, so juxtaposed to what we just read. We are lead to believe that someone felt the sanitorium was better for him than jail to the point they were even willing to foot the bill for his stay there. He was “incarcerated” for 20 years until the bill was no longer going to be paid. When he was released, he had a score to settle with some people from his past.
In the meantime, Elizabeth "Ellie" Parrish Duveen, an orphan raised by her wealthy, doting grandmother, Miss Lottie, is trying to make her mark as a struggling café owner in Santa Monica—free of her grandmother’s help as her mark of independence. She is the last surviving relative of Miss Lottie, who lives in Montecito, CA. I am familiar with the area and loved that Adler used actual places and names to add to local color, making the story even more true to life.
We are caught up in a novel with a wonderful story of romance and then there is this very sinister, dark element as we follow Ellie's and Buck’s stories of evolvement. Ellie meets the love of her life, Dan, though she won’t admit it—and if they were to make a movie of this book, Dan would certainly be the strong, attractive leading man to her sparkling, upbeat persona.
There were few characters in the story, making it possible for each to have a well-developed place in the book that really was Ellie’s story of tragedy and triumph. Romance was built slowly, as was the suspenseful aspect with me finally on the edge of my seat waiting for both aspects to meet close to the end of the book. To say the least, this was a page-turner. At one point, the hour was getting late and the action intense. The choice was to read on through and possibly dream/have nightmares of it later or wait til daylight…
I will look for other Adler books for future reading.
You know that feeling when you think you finally found the best book you would probably brag about to the whole world, and suddenly the gets all crappy and bam!
This is a good example. This book had me really sitting at the edge of my seat. There were times that I get so thrilled, suspenseful, excited, whatever. When I was about halfway of it, I felt like I've just laid hands upon the best book that's probably ever written! But guess what! The ending ruined it.
Well, I'm not saying that the ending was crappy, or ugly, but, it just doesn't work out for me. We all know that every people has opinions so, I'm sorry for those who liked this, because turns out that I don't really like it.
I liked this story but I have to say that the number of typos got on my nerves. And they usually don't so you know there were a lot. I found the characters interesting and the romance sweet. But I have to say that the premise was a bit hard to buy. So you will need to suspend belief to get on board with a hospital that releases a dangerous man without notifying the people who were keeping him there. And a criminal genius that has just been waiting for 20 years to get his revenge. And the police being so dumb that they suspect the loving granddaughter of murdering the woman who raised her.. I was OK with it, for the most part. And as I said some of the characters and the romance saved the story for me.
I would consider giving this 3.25 or 3.5 except there were too many careless typos: lace for face, rather for father, Ufe for life (took me a while to figure that one out). When the action would heat up the typos increased. As far as the story? That was actually pretty good. I liked the premise and the characters were developed instead of simply presented. The story unfolded gradually and holds your interest. The ending unraveled a little too quickly and I thought that could've been developed better. It felt too rushed and it seemed like details were missing. All in all, though, this was a good read and I'll definitely check out other books by Elizabeth Adler.
OMG. Such a great book. Buck was N-U-T-S. Totally insane. I'm not sure if it was something his mother created by bringing him up so oddly, but my subconscious tends to think so.
When he was released from the insane asylum all hell broke loose.
I loved this book. Such suspense with romance, kept me on the edge of my seat, as all books should do but only a handful have proof in the pudding.
I really get into mysteries with a romance and this was a page-turner. I rushed home every day from work to see what was going to happen next as Buck got closer and closer to the people he sought revenge against.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I believe it is the first I have read by this author. I think what I liked best was that there was a nice balance between the romance of the story and the plot. I was very engaged in this novel and look forward to reading more books by the author. The characters were interesting and well developed as well. I especially liked Mya probably because she was so wild and unique. She added a great touch of humor and interest to the story. And of course Ellie and Dan were great lead characters. In short I highly recommend this book for a lot of reasons.
This book was completely different from all the other Elizabeth Adler books I have read. This was fast moving, suspenseful and held my attention the entire way through. As I got to the end I was glad to know how the story ends, but sad to know it was going to be over soon. It is a wonderful love story and mystery. Buck Duvern is a driven and ruthless character, that you are instantly watchful of. I highly recommend this book for it's intrigue and to those who love mysteries.
Not as enjoyable as some of the other books I've read lately, but it kept my attention, largely due to the gradual development of the romantic relationship. The suspense part was a little too overdone for me writing-wise, and there were some moments in the dialogue where I actually groaned. (Would have been much better to lapse into narration than have the characters speak in narrative paragraphs that weren't even close to anything someone would actually say.)
THE FACT THAT OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS SEVERELY BROKEN COMES TO LIGHT IN THIS READ. I ALWAYS FOUND IT AMAZING HOW SOMEONE COULD BE INSANE AS LONG AS YOU HAD THE MONEY TO KEEP THEM LOCKED UP. WHEN THE MONEY RUNS OUT THEY ARE SUDDENLY SANE ENOUGH TO BE RELEASED BACK OUT ONTO SOCIETY. HOW SCARY IS THAT? AT ABOUT 52% I WAS PRAYING HARD HE WOULD COME TO A HORRIBLE END OMG HE NEEDED TO BE KILLED. I LIKED THE ENDING BUT I THINK I WOULD HAVE DONE HIM IN EVEN MORE. ;D
If only this author knew how to use commas appropriately, instead of writing the run-on sentences she seems to love! I found the lack of structure in the grammar distracting to the story, as I had to stop and re-read sentences that didn't have the right stops in the right places. The story line is passable, but I don't expect to read any more by this author.
The author kept me guessing. Ending was a bit lame based on how well the book had been flowing and keeping me on my toes. Still enjoyed it. Enough romance to keep me interested and rooting for the guy.
This was one of those stories I can connect with. What if my evil stepsister became sinister? Good book glad I picked it up at the St. Louis airport years ago... It got lost in the move and I came across it while unpacking and sorting DeWayne's things.
This book was good, but not great. For me, it was a little too predictable. I like books that keep me in suspense, and it was very obvious from the beginning of the book how the plot was going to go down. I did like the characters that the author created, though, and that was a big plus.
I enjoyed the story, but why are there so many typos and misspellings? It interrupted the flow of story trying to figure out the word. For example, "ufe" was life more than once.
I don’t know who’s editing this book but he/she/they should be fired. The misspelling and typos throughout the book were so unprofessional. The name of the cafe was “Elite” the first 2 times it was mentioned. They were so prevalent that it was distracting.
