Pair a cynical, veteran homicide detective, Gabe Parker, with a rookie, playboy detective, Alex Garcia. Drop them in the seediest part of town with a high-profile murder. Toss in compassion, personal issues and a passion for the job. The result, is a lot of snarky banter, clever detective work and a begrudging mutual respect.

In the middle of the high-profile murder case, a prostitute goes missing. The death toll rises and Parker and Garcia would give a month’s wages for one good clue.

Take a bow Karen Fritz! This is a great police procedural with characters who are both interesting and believable. The plot was well-paced and I found the book difficult to put down until I reached the end. Clues were uncovered gradually throughout the book leading the two detectives, Parker and Garcia, toward a very surprising conclusion in solving several murders.

Parker came across as a seasoned, dedicated, honest detective. Garcia, the more junior detective, was a ladies man and looked to Parker as a mentor as he honed his skills. The prostitutes were portrayed with sensitivity to their dreams of one day getting out of the business.

The story takes place in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and I enjoyed recognizing some local places in the book. I'm a little worried now about the "Southside" area which I'm not familiar with - seems like a pretty rough place.

Although I found the beginning of the story a little slow and matter-of-fact, that quickly changed after the characters were introduced and basics laid out. The pace quickened and the plot thickened and I was hooked. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good police procedural or murder mystery. I'm looking forward to the next book by Ms. Fritz!
