Alan Shaden may look like your average Tinder crush – 6’2”, dark hair, dark eyes, dimples – but with his rugged exterior comes a soft and battered heart, and his biggest secret (literally), which he keeps hidden in the back of his closet.

Alan doesn’t stop to think he’s a sex addict until a therapist deems him one, but that’s right before they have sex in her office. Alan isn’t the best man. He’s the first to admit it, but he’s trying to be better. It’s not easy having good intentions and compulsive desires at the same time.

As Alan’s layers peel away, you come to know the worn soul beneath the man. The traumatic childhood tragedies that have made him this way. A troubled past can shape you, or break you, and Alan is teetering somewhere in between. But he’s a gentleman at heart, hiding a dark past, and a life-size, synthetic secret.

Sabrina is a doll. She can’t move. She can’t talk. She can’t kiss Alan back like a real woman can. She can’t even tell him she loves him. But what she can do for him is something no woman has ever done before: she can stay. Who said love had to be with a real person for it to be real?

Christina Hart is one of my favorite poets so I was super stoked when she sent me a copy of her novel to read. Synthetic Love rules. It's a story about love, chivalry, girlfriends, deception, addiction and ultimately, sex with a doll. Not at all like that movie. This story is fresh, a little funny, a little more sad.

I have always wondered how some writers can create whole universes, worlds, in their head and translate their visions onto paper in a way that makes these fictional places not just fully developed, but supremely real to the reader (ex: I still wish I could live in a place like Stars Hollow).

Christina Hart is one of those writers who create magic out of thin air, in both her poetry and her novels. She dreams up these alternate realities that are familiar to us, but also just one step into the bizarre.

With Synthetic Love, Hart has done it again. She has created a story whose main character is terribly human - but not terrible. You want to root for him. You want to see him become a better man. But wrapped up in this man's battle with sex addiction, is the Hart-twist - he tries to manage is compulsions with a sex doll.

Hart uncovers a world that I learned only recently really exists - a place where synthetic women are treated like they are real - with men engaging in actual relationships - even marriage - with them.

I have never -in my life- read anything like this before. A publishing house would be foolish to turn this down. It's jarring. It's unconventional. But it's got so much heart. And that makes it special. Hart created something new, unique, and engaging. Not every writer can reinvent the wheel, but she does time and time again.

Synthetic Love is a tale of a man searching for love and comfort in any place he can find it. Alan is broken in many ways due to many unfortunate incidents in his formative years. He seems to make wrong turns at every pass and I felt for her him. I’ve been that person. He confuses sex and love. He obsesses and hurts. The path to happiness for many of us isn’t traditional and I found that to be so relatable. Reading Synthetic Love felt like listening to Alan’s confessions. His diary. He deserves to be heard.

“I keep trying to kill the old me and he keeps sneaking back out. Like a bad dog who just won’t learn new tricks because he’s learned to love eating the garbage because he’s been doing it for so long.”

"I never realized how hollow she was. Sabrina, the silicone sex doll. Her eyes, they look empty. Lifeless. Worn. And it's only in that moment that I wonder if she sees the same thing in mine."

Oddly enough, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am not quite sure what that says about me but it really worked for me. When I finished the book I felt so...empty. A good type of empty. An empathetic one. An empty like Alan felt, and emptiness that I wanted so bad to be full but I just knew it wouldn't be. A yearning and wanting mixed into one. Like, I wanted to hold Alan and give him the coddling that he craved from a woman so bad.

A lot of things happen to Alan throughout the entire book and we experience every single one of them with him. It was repulsing, my stomach would churn, and it was masochistic of me to keep plowing through the book. But I understood what the author was doing. She was explaining to us why Alan was the way he was. She didn't do it for shock factor or dramatics and I can always appreciate that. Understanding the tics and the ins and outs of a character is one of my most favorite things about a book and Christina took a character driven story and gave us his life on his own term and in his own words.

"I am still 18 years old and still nursing a broken heart when it breaks all over again, in a different way. In a way I'm afraid I will never recover from."

The writing was quick paced and packed a huge punch. It reminded me a lot of Joe in Caroline Kepnes' book, YOU. The way she wrote out his thought processing was the similar to the way Alan's thoughts come across the page. Not to mention the way the writing was punctuated and all laid out for you made for a smooth and enjoyable reading experience. I don't think I have ever read anything like this before. It's unconventional, uncomfortable, and uneasy. But it's so full of empathy and love. Christina does a fantastic job at pulling the feelings from you that you don't quite expect to feel.

Synthetic Love is the type of book that will be hit or miss with people. I don't see how there is an in-between. PLEASE heed those trigger warnings at the beginning of the book. Don't take them lightly. I normally pay no mind to them, but this one is braving you for what is to come in this book. But don't let it scare you away from the story itself. I am more than happy to let you know what to bypass so you don't have to read it, but I hope that you read this book as a whole. It's such a cool and original story that hasn't been done before.

"And this is the problem. All of this. With people. With real, living, breathing people. They will never understand you. Could never understand you. Most won't take the time to try. Most will throw you away before they even have a chance to get to any of the layers underneath. I think I have layers. Maybe not. Maybe people aren't as fucked up as I am. Maybe they all are. Maybe everyone thinks of themselves the same way I do. Maybe we all sit home alone at night sometimes wondering if anyone out there could ever really love us. Maybe all of us have night terror and nightmares and fucking dread the future sometimes because after enough time, it all looks dim. If the past is any sort of foreshadowing for the future, I'm skeptical that things will ever get better. And how can they? How can they if we don't let them? How can they if we don't try? Fuck. I think I try. I want to try."

Alan is your average man addicted to sex. Wait, what? You heard me correctly. When we first meet Alan, first impressions take over. "A douchebag who's addicted to sex. Let's see how this asshole treats women." We come to a screeching hault in our thought process once we finally get to know Alan. This story is told through Now and Then perspectives. We start off with today's Alan and we learn that we are ALL extremely judgmental when it comes to first impressions. As we enter the first Then, our views start to shift. We tend to forget that people are a certain way, why? Usually because they have a past that made them this way. What made Alan this way?

My heart ached so many times for Alan, reading this story. Each and every page wanting to take his hand and show him what a good life could be like. The experiences Alan has had to face from such a young age, only stay with him throughout his entire life. There are obvious quirks to him but why? Can that ever be changed? Alan struggles in his present because of his past. Can he make peace with those everlasting ghosts, or is his fate what he fears most? Being alone.

All Alan wants is to love with his whole being and be loved the same way in return. It seems there is something always in the way trying to stop it. Be it small mistakes he continues to make, or even little miscommunications. Some women only want him for a night but he takes it. He's never actually alone though and he realizes this. The biggest secret he's held from every girl sits in his closet...

I think this book should be read by adults. We know circumstances are not always an excuse, but we need to understand why people are the way they are. Off the bat, we judge Alan off of one fact: he's a sex addict. Why are we all so quick to judge when we want others to see us for who WE really are in return? This book helps to get on the path of erasing first impressions and judgements. I think many people can learn a thing or two from a book like this one.

I have to say, I was a little surprised to learn, after devouring this novel, that Christina is a poet. Let me explain why:
This book, while it is such a strong, and at times jarring piece of work, doesn't have even a hint of that melodic writing that most poets can't help but inject in their stories.
This is one of the greatest compliments that I can give: Christina Hart is a chameleon of a writer. She wrote Alan like a fucking champion; brilliantly and fearlessly.
Fans of YOU by Caroline Kepnes will enjoy this sexually-charged and self-deprecating hero.
Take a chance. Read this book.

I don’t even know where to start. The writing is captivating. Hooked me from the first sentence. Alan’s voice is amazing. I couldn’t stop reading until I had to sleep and the first thing I did when I woke up was open the book to continue the story. I needed to know what was going to happen with Alan. The ending was not what I expected, but it works. Amazing read.

I have read two beautiful poetry books by Christina Hart this year. From my experience, novels written by poets will gut you, since they are filled with poetic, raw emotion.

This one was no exception, except for the fact that Hart didn’t waste any sentences. She didn’t write in flowery words. She was direct and unsympathetic in her storytelling, meaning she told it like it was. Alan’s life was like a train-wreck that you couldn’t look away from, both past and present.

Poor Alan, our protagonist, really can’t catch a break in this book. When his girlfriend hears that he cheated on her with a girl named Jenny, it sets off a chain of events that changes every life he touches throughout the entire story. Not always in great ways either. He’s a little bit of a bad guy, but it’s because he is trying so hard to be good. The harder he tries the worse his situation gets.

You see Alan is many things. He is a product of a shitty upbringing that included a dad that beat the crap out of him and abused his mother as well as some old fashioned child molesting that occurred right under shitty parents noses. I enjoy stories like this because it exposes predators and their methods used to ensnare their victims.

I couldn’t put this down. Not one sentence was wasted in this book. I truly felt for this man that just couldn’t get his s*** together. Hart did jump back and forth in his life a little, but it was in a very natural way that complemented the story line.

The title Synthetic Love is more than just Sabrina the sex doll from the blurb. It’s the feeling in Alan’s life that he feels with all the women that he seeks to love throughout his life, and that was truly heartbreaking for me to realize over and over again. All he wanted was love, but all these women that he was sleeping with were just fake feelings, a band-aid for his wounds he’d carried forever.

Great book, nice job, 5 heart-broken yet totally in love with this author stars.

Beautiful, tragic, and bittersweet.

I was sent an ARC for an honest review.

"I never realized how hollow she was. Sabrina, the silicone sex doll. Her eyes, they look empty. Lifeless. Worn. And it's only in that moment that I wonder if she sees the same thing in mine."

I've been a big fan of Christina Hart for a couple of years now. Long before I knew her, I was a fan of her poetry. I knew she was a very strong voice and that resonated with me immediately. Then she released a book under the title "Fresh Skin" and I was hooked.

The same powerful voice that can capture you in very few words is strong enough to keep you captivated for a couple hundred pages as well. I already knew her writing style was gorgeous, but everything I read before seems to pale in comparison to how beautifully written Synthetic Love is.

The story is beautiful, tragic, heartbreaking, bittersweet, and painful all wrapped into one of the most unique books I've ever read, and possibly my favorite non-horror book I've read this year. I already know I'll be revisiting Alan and the loves of his life, as well as all the ones that were just passing through and the one that never left. Each character in this book is gorgeous in their own way, even those you want to hate. Alan may be the focus of the story, this may be his story, but Hart has constructed the women in his life, and men, in such a way that you feel for every single character. Even those you hate, you will pity them as much as you hate them.

I had a very difficult time laying the book aside throughout the entire time I was reading. I knew the ending was coming my way too quickly, but I couldn't stop reading. I had to know because she made me feel. I felt my own heart break when Alan's did. I felt how relatable most of the characters were in their own ways. Even Sabrina herself.

I'm urging you to give Synthetic Love a read. You're not getting a cheesy, corny book. You're getting a beautiful tragedy about a man you will love as much as I do and as much as I know Hart loved. Her love for the characters and the story is evident throughout each word.

Synthetic Love speaks to our ugly human parts. It's a story of love and self understanding. It brings the reader face to face with the truth that we are products of our pasts and all the people who have come in and out of our lives. Hart has done a beautiful job of writing a story that showcases the reality of humanity and emotions and choices. Her gift of crafting relatable characters shined through in this book. Loved it!

I have to be honest, I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did. I was highly skeptical, but I went into it with an open mind because Christina Hart is one of my favorite poets. It starts off pretty normal, and you automatically feel bad for the main character Alan. He’s going through stuff and clearly looking for comfort and love in the wrong places. Hart keeps your interest because every time you think it’ll work out for him, he gets to be happy, a wrench is thrown into the plans. Plus you’re constantly on the edge of your seat wondering if and when anyone will learn about his secret. His back story was perfect to explain why he is who he is, it left me feeling so bad for him and honestly I just wanted to give him a hug. I read this book so quick because it’s really hard to put down, there’s no dull moment or lull for you to stop and take a break. It’s a different kind of love story which is amazing because Hart stayed away from so many cliches making it all her own. Definitely don’t let the context scare you away, this book deserves a chance to be read.

I was not prepared...

This book did things to me. I didn’t expect to love Alan. Or to relate to him the way I did. I just... holy crap.

“Maybe it was easier to f*ck people and forget them, instead of getting to know them and doing something stupid – like falling in love.”

Christina did a beautiful job peeling back Alan’s layers, slowly revealing who he is and why. Yes, he’s a sex addict. Yes, he has a sex doll. But there’s so much more to him. To his story. A character’s happiness has never been this important to me. I just wanted someone to love Alan, to fight for him. To stay.

“No matter what I do, she will never leave me. For once, someone won’t leave me. And that’s real. Even if she isn’t.”

Hart killed me in the best possible way. I want to devour everything she’s ever written now.

“I do not feel alone. And I have never known a more beautiful feeling.”

Read this book. Go now.

I was gifted this book by Christina in her Hart's Heathans group on Facebook. I was a little skeptical when I first read about this novel, because of the sex doll. But, this book was calling to me - demanding to br read and it did not disappoint. Christina, I love Alan and I love Jenny. This novel is beautifully written and I'm honestly sad that I've finished reading it. This is by far one of the best books that I have had the chance to read. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful novel. I look forward to reading more from you Christina.

I have always struggled to find a good book from a males perspective and this is it!

Alan, in all his brokenness and pain, was only on a quest to find the love he so desperately lacked as a child. This story is paved in pain, so many ugly things happen leading up to the big moment of happiness. I expected discomfort going in to this story and I found it in a completely different way, at times it made my skin crawl but ultimately Alan wormed his way into my heart.

I think Hart has a gift, capturing the true, raw, ugly...beauty of a soul, that's what this story felt like, capturing a soul the world would have found odd and out of place and making it understandable, evoking emapthy. This story was in short, brilliant!

'Synthetic Love' was not a typical read, which is one of the reasons I was drawn to it. I like to read a wide variety of books and this one was not a disappointment. It was not a typical love story and I loved it. Not only was the story engaging and the characters beautifully created, but I also think it shed light on some darker issues a lot of people deal with. There is really something about Christina's writing that just pulls you in and keeps you there glued to it. Great book and I recommend everyone give it a read.

Alan was such a fascinating character. Being in his headspace intrigued me. He is a sweet guy who was dealt a crap life. At times, it felt like no matter how great he was, no one deemed him worthy enough.

But he always had Sabrina.

From the start of the book, I tried to figure out how Alan would inevitably be with Sabrina. Then everything lined up perfectly. And as bad as I felt for Alan, I was happy he finally got happiness. Even if it was not how he expected.

Synthetic Love is unique and brilliant and a reminder that love is not the same for everyone.

3.5 stars

This is my first read of any kind by this author I was kind of impressed. The reason why i gave this 3.5 stars was because i couldn't really fully connect to the characters. The writing was great. the words flew by, it was a fast read. But i couldn't for the life of me connect and picture the characters. If this author wrote another novel I'll give it another try it.

Wow. This was just a brilliantly different, compelling read. Being in Alan Shaden’s head(MC) was a learning curve for me. The author did a great job of psychoanalyzing such a layered character to pull this off. *hats off* And i couldn’t help but root for him the entire time, through all of the darkness, that he was reluctantly pulled into and that he left in his trail. Recommend this read.

I tried to prolong the inevitable, but unfortunately I had to finish this book. I’m happy and sad and a little empty all at once. I want to stay in Alan’s head. He said a lot of things that will stay with me long after today.

This book

This book is hands down one of the strangest books I've ever read as far as content, so therefore it is super original. But they're writing and the story are beautiful, and I am so in love with the main character Alan.

This book is what teaches you what love is about. Alan will change the way you look at it. It changes the way we see love, the standards we put on it and yes, it is completely unconventional but sometimes life just is that way.

Synthetic Love gives us a inside look into a man who looking love and acceptance the traditional way and never understanding that there is no tradition way. We are all unique and we can all have our happy endings.

This book will surprise you, Alan will give you all the emotions as you learn his story and Christina what has given us brilliant.
