A Temporary Engagement #2

Some Like It Ruthless

Rate this book
Dallas, Texas— the home of big hair and big hats. Big money and big egos. Big lives, big loves, and big mistakes...

The Caldwells and Montgomerys have been feuding for generations, and through the years Margaret and Cole have been secret friends, secret lovers, and outright enemies. For the last six years, they've both pretended the other didn't exist— it's hard to get along with a Caldwell when she always gets what she wants; it's hard to trust a Montgomery when he'll go out of his way to break a deal.

But six years is a long time. Long enough to make a woman who was once queen of the Dallas social set now teeter on the brink of bankruptcy. Long enough to make a man who was once reviled now so prosperous that anyone in Dallas would beg to be under his thumb.

Almost anyone. Because Margaret Caldwell hasn't forgotten that the last time she made a deal with Cole Montgomery, he betrayed her— and she'll never believe that all he wants for saving her this time is forgiveness for his one big mistake...

Contains a damn lotta cussing, too much sex and innuendo, and one angry blonde making a man sing soprano.

Megan Bryce sits in front of a computer all day making up stories for a living. Which means she is not nearly as interesting (as well as tall, svelte, and/or dressed) as her characters. She gets bored quickly and just can't be bothered with anyone in her head who doesn't make her laugh--which translates into fun books, outrageous situations, and witty characters.

I read Some Like it Charming by this same author, and enjoyed it. This felt as if it was written by a completely different person.

First, the heroine, Margaret (Maggie) Caldwell, is one of the most unlikeable characters I've read in a while. She's cold, calculating, self-absorbed, arrogant, and often, just downright witchy. She actually knees the hero in the groin because he had the nerve to call her Baby. Seriously?

Throughout the book, I felt as if I were missing something, like maybe this is the sequel to Tanner and Ginny's story. Even after finishing the entire book, I was still a little unclear on how and why things played out the way they did when Maggie and Cole were 18. There's no explanation as to how Tanner ended up with Ginny when Maggie "loved" him enough to trade her virginity to Cole to save Tanner's family from financial ruin. Cole reneges on the deal, and the author refers to him "sneering" at Maggie that he'd always wanted to see a Caldwell beg "outside the bedroom". It may be clear in the author's mind, but not in mine. There were definitely pieces missing.

Cole Montgomery, who's supposed to be the ruthless hero is much kinder and more mature than Maggie. He had his stupid moments in the past, but seems to have grown up, for the most part (which is nice, since he and Maggie are now 30). I don't know why he kept trying to help her when all she did was get angry and say she couldn't trust him when he did try to help. I know love is blind, but in this case, it's blind, deaf, dumb, and not very smart.

Finally, this book is less than 300 pages, and the author is charging $8.99 for it? I got it for free, but if I had paid $8.99, I'd be requesting a refund from Amazon. The book is rife with misplaced words, repeated words, and misused words. To study a contract with scrutiny is to PORE over it, not pour (this was in the book at least twice). And one does not itch a scratch. The first time I read that phrase, I thought it was a joke between the H/h, but it was repeated about five or six times, so clearly the author believes this is the correct phrasing. No. You can scratch an itch, but you simply cannot itch a scratch.

I would not recommend this book to any of my friends.

LACKS ROMANCE

Cole and Maggie are enemies, though once she was his best friend and defender till he betrayed her. Now Maggie needs Cole's help, but he's the last person she wants to ask. But to save her family she swallows her pride.

This was just okay for me. The two lead characters were hard boiled wheeler dealers. We don't see enough of their softer sides. I would liked this to have seen more romance between Cole and Maggie. There was rather too much about business deals. At times I found it confusing and difficult to follow.

Some Like It Ruthless (A Temporary Engagement #2) is a Contemporary Romantic Comedy. While I didn't think it was a funny as 'Some Like It Charming', it definitely got some grins and chuckles out of me. It is very fast paced and Cole is always in trouble with Maggie.
Maggie and Cole are fully developed characters that you can really sink you teeth in. They compliment each other flawlessly. Where Cole is hot, Maggie is cold and they blend perfectly in the middle. They protect and defend each other even when they are fighting each other.
The only negative is a very few editing mistakes where a word was missing in a sentence in my Kindle Edition. There is no down time in the story. At 285 pages you get a full and well rounded story that will delight any romance reader. It is not erotica, yet the passion between these two singe the pages with exquisite ADULT romance.
I am so enchanted with this series that I downloaded 'Some Like It Perfect', Book #3, before I started writing this review despite the fact I haven't read the synopsis!! I never do that.

What a wonderful story!! Wow! I absolutely loved Cole. He is all man, strong, good looking, rich, powerful, and in love. Yes, he is in love with Maggie and has been since they were teenagers. After making a mistake he has regretted for over twelve years, he is given the chance to win her back. And boy does he. Maggie is a strong and very likeable leading lady. She doesn't whine, she doesn't complain, she doesn't make you want to throw your Kindle. She is just a strong willed and persistent woman trying to save her family business. She has a lot of pride and is determined to get what she wants. I loved watching them work together and get closer. There is so much chemistry between these two, you just can't help but pull for them to be together. They both love each other so much, and although they are each stubborn in many ways, they do know how to negotiate. This is a stand alone, happy ending book written in not only their POVs, but also Maggie's sister and her brother-in-law's. Great story. Can't wait to read more from this author

I think I read the first book to this series, but I can’t remember. The characters surely seem familiar.

Anyway, Cole and Maggie are the Romeo and Juliette of Wallstreet. He needs a fake fiancé to save his empire and she gladly refuses.

Now, 6 yrs. Later, she is on the verge of bankruptcy and needs a fake fiancé. The roles are reversed. Mmm, interesting.

Story is ultimately about loans and finances—all business with a kinky lust on the side. Kinda dull. And it’s another fake fiancé story. Really? Again?

Cole and Maggie

Lots of witty banter between the two

But they were both a little scary and Cole deserved more kicks to the balls than he got.

I didn't understand at the end why Maggie never made him agree to never make a decision without her. I don't think I could ever trust him or be able to live like that.... always looking over your shoulder wondering what he's doing behind your back, purposely choosing to be sneaky and dishonest, purposely choosing to make himself feel secure while reinforcing your insecurity and proving him not trust worthy. I could see why she loved him, could see why she mistrusted him. I honestly don't know if he was worth it.

BUT, This was more emotionally involving than The Takeover. I despised Tristan Miles, everything about him. And Claire was weak and useless. That book was a horror show to me. I would have walked away from Tristan and left my kids with him. That would show him.

But Maggie was strong and worthy. But too forgiving. Cole was loving but relentless. But their love was believable. But Cole was too insecure about Maggie. IDK if I could put up with him because of that. He's always dragging them 2 steps back. His trust issues were not acknowledged or dealt with in this book. He was a bit duplicitous towards Maggie, but yet so patient and caring. It was disarming.

2024 update

I had no memory of reading this the first time until I went to add this to my Currently Reading shelf and saw the below review. Even as I was reading it, I didn't get any memory pings. I'll upgrade it to 4 stars this time, and I had a better idea of what was missing for me.

This could have been a 5 star read this time around. What stopped it were:

1) the vague "we're doing business for the business and the business causes busyness. Oh and also, debt, loans, loans, debt, and buy" conversations that really only served to make me realize I had no idea what the Caldwell company was supposed to do, other than be there to make sure I knew that Maggie's family had been rich and the money had been badly managed;

2) the ending was a) far too abrupt and b) The story really could have used an Epilogue.

But I do love stories where the author does a decent job of showing the characters as larger-than-life instead of just telling us. These two did not interact the way normal people would, even in a romance novel, just in a way that worked for them, which I loved. I would totally buy this book someday if I can find it on sale (which I said ten years ago and then apparently forgot). I could even see this ending up on my "Keepers" shelf, which is really just a name for books I could easily re-read.

I'll be skipping the next two books in the series. Those blurbs just do absolutely nothing for me.

Original 2014 review:

3.5 stars for this one.

This was a good one. I got it for free from Amazon and I'm glad I did because I would never have spent $9.99 on a book by an author I'm not familiar with (and probably not on 95% authors I am familiar with). Cole and Maggie were fun characters, mostly because she was just as vicious as he was (actually more so) and he was the only man around strong enough to deal with her.

I'm actually not sure why I didn't like this one more. I had fun reading it, the characters were different enough to be a breath of fresh air, I thoroughly enjoy when a hero gives a good grovel for past actions, and the heroine was pretty kick-butt.

And then there was the pool scene... Hoo-yah!

It took me a while to get into the B-plot of Maggie's sister, Ginny, and her husband Tanner, but it ended up being a sweet story, if a little oversimplified. I am, however, glad the author didn't go the he was magically cured of alcoholism by her luuuuurrrrvvvv route the way some authors do. It wasn't that oversimplified, at least.

All in all, a fun read. I won't be reading the rest of the books in the series unless they come down in price in a big way. I know others will disagree with me, but the only way I'd pay $9.99 for an e-book is if the author was someone reliable with a big name like Neil Gaiman and 1) it wasn't available at the library OR 2) part or all of the proceeds were being donated to charity. With e-books and their limited overhead compared to paperbacks, as far as I can see, there is no other legitimate reason to charge that much -- EVER -- in my opinion and doing so is in the realm of price gouging. I don't know if the author is indie or if this is her publisher that is doing this, but charging more than $7.99 (which is what most mass market paperbacks are currently being sold for) is ridiculous in my mind.

Sorry, didn't mean to make that into a rant. Charging high prices for e-books is one of my hot button issues.

Still, the author was good and if I could find another in the series on sale (or, preferably free, since this is only the first book I've read by Megan Bryce and I've learned the hard way with new authors, could be a fluke), I'd definitely read her again.

For some reason I often find books that are in a middle of a series and end up looking for the first book. For this reason I have started to like books that you don't need to read book 1 to understand what happens in the one you are reading. This is that kind of series, each book stands on it's own, almost as if they are not part of series.

This book is more my style then the previous book so much that I gave it 4 stars when in reality it probably is more like a 3 star but it took my heart and resonated with me.

We have 2 strong willed people that like to be equals and work to get the upper hand. Margaret is a proud, spirted women who HATES hand outs and will do anything to not be on the receiving end of that. She has been hurt and pulled herself up, fighting all that she can to keep that side protected. She is very much like a wild mustang, in and out of the bedroom. I felt very much akin to her and thought this is me in so many ways, my own mother would tell the better of my Boyfriends to not cage me and approach with caution for I will spook and run. And I did, many times; for they never listened and this is the kind of woman I like to read about.

Now Cole, he is the kind of guy that is hard to find, he is just as strong in will as Margaret and himself very much like her in many ways. He has his flaws that he sees and he his not happy about his past and what he did, but does try to make up for it. I have dated many types of guys in the past and if anyone came close to his strong will they where controlling or abusive, if they had his compassion they where to emotional and not one to stand up to my Irish temper because of being so easy going. Cole was the perfect mix of it all and not one to back down, and does it in a respectful manner to Marg's independent wild nature.

Oh emm gee. Too. Much. Banter. I’d say 2/3s of the book was banter and that was far too much. It dragged the plot down. I eventually lost interest and stopped halfway through. I gave this book such a long rest that when I came back I had forgotten a lot of what had happened, and still the bantering went on.

The fem MC was a flawed individual but there was a little growth in there at the end. I still don’t get what the big deal was with her sister deciding to support her ALCOHOLIC HUSBAND on his road to recovery when the fem MC was doing just fine with her guy’s support. It’s not like she was leaving the state and did-owning the family.

Maybe there was too much going on in general. There must have been about 4-5 smaller plot lines that slowed the story down. Like the alcoholic brother-in-law. Couldn’t have cared less about his POV, or his wife’s. I was actually pretty confused by it when I was fist getting into the book because they didn’t go into why he was where he was emotionally until way later. The “I’ve forgiven you but haven’t forgotten” theme was a little much too because it seemed to have been forgotten in the middle of the book, then only popped up when it seemed convenient to add more drama and make the plot keep on dragging.

There was too much deal-making in this book. All the names and desired outcomes started blurring together after a while and I found myself wanting to skip chunks of the book.

I liked the MCs together, they were cute and funny, but the book could have been 1/2 as long and twice as good because of it.

I bought all 4 books in this series in audiobook form (And also the boxed set in ebook form) and really liked the first book in the series. I was kind of disappointed that this book didn't follow Cassandra, who I adored in the prior book. But this is a new couple and I felt like really separated from the first book (I didn't see any connections, in fact, unless I missed it!) So definitely standalone.

Margaret needs help to prevent bankruptcy. Cole and she are enemies although they were once involved before. They start a fake engagement to help each other. There was a lot of banter, a bit of getting even and a lot of outright threats. I was charmed by the first book and less charmed by this book. I didn't get the odd addition of her sister, Ginny, and her husband, Tanner, who is an alcoholic and who Margaret/Maggie loved. And the end was so abrupt I actually relistened to the last chapter because I wasn't sure if I missed something.

I must have missed something in the audiobook because the story was lacking cohesiveness, in my opinion.

The audiobook was narrated by Tess Irondale who narrates the series. Overall, she is pretty good and plays the multiple characters really well.

3 1/2 stars What can I say about this book? For most of the book it felt too much like the previous contemporary romance book that I had read by this author. Instead of banter between the H and h, the dialogue in this book was quips, short, fast, quick. The H and h are from families that have reached out to each other for help in the past. Former friends then lovers, the H hurt the h and devastated her ability to trust him 12 years ago. The H and h agree to a fake engagement so that the h can save her company from bankruptcy. It's not until the end of the book that we find out what he did which makes the reader rethink the whole story. I like some elements of the author's style at the same time that the story can feel too familiar like a repeat of a previous book.

I got mix feelings of this. I like how this book worded things out but it lacks of something. Like more romance? It has a long of push and pull like maybe 85% push and pull 15% romancey. Also i dont understand tanner and ginny. Like i dont see tanner actually loving his wife because in his pov it was always him, him and him! Also Ginny gives me the vibe of i cant see anything wrong with my husband because he’s all so perfect! How can u give up everything just for the sake of a loser husband. They really fit the younger sibling who had their first relationship and will do everything for them despite what their elders say. Like she gave me the vibe of blinded love. i dont know if im reading this book right or im missing something. Sorry

Couldn't put it down!

I loved the book until the last chapter.

I guess it was an HEA for the characters in the book. I don't understand why the heroine stayed with the hero. I'm just not built that way.

But the character development of the two was fascinating. I've never know anyone like them. This book definitely showed sides to human behavior which I have never read about or been exposed to.

The ending was unsettling and I didn't understand the relationship. I thought I did until the end. I don't think the marriage will last and that is why I was unhappy with the last chapter and why I deducted a star.

3.5 stars for an enjoyable ride. Cole and Maggie have been friends, lovers, enemies and everything in between. Now it’s time to take those steps again. There’s wonderful heat and some fantastic tension, witty banter and a huge lack of trust all the way through but it all makes for an enjoyable story.

Maggie might not want Cole's help but she would do anything to save the Caldwell name. Maggie and Cole might have a complicated past but when it's true love you accept one another with all their faults. A fun easy read!

Exciting and fantastic

I love how great this author can write. This story is so full of so much excitement and adventures. The characters are so playful. I really enjoyed how they bantered back and forth. A great story to read.

Second chance romance. It was fine, but I found myself really struggling with finding a major story line. Yes, there was a plot. Yes, there were some interesting moments, but it was just lacking something essential. It felt…flat.

These were two really unpleasant characters and this was so unromantic. All they did was try and beat each other. They behaved like adolescents. The ending was so unsatisfactory, I felt like throwing my iPad at the wall!

Love the story but I was not crazy about the female character. I felt she was a bit cold-hearted and annoying. I loved his character.

Let me first say that I, in no way, receive pleasure from leaving a negative review. I would rather read a great book and not waste my time on the ones that are not so great.

I loved 'Some Like It Charming' and was so excited to read the second book in this series. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed.

This couple was so far out in left field that I had trouble following the story and who was doing what. They were both immature and clueless, Maggie more so than Cole. Some of the language was a bit much, bordering on crude making it just raw sex instead of making love. Neither had much self-control but they each sure wanted to be in the driver's seat.

I also don't understand the continual one-up-man-ship. Ex: She showed up at his home and woke him up at 5 am one day. So a day or two later he showed up at her house around 4 am. Each of them spent most of the book making sure everything was always even.

In my opinion, this was not really a love story. It was a story about a man who was willing to destroy people without a second thought regardless of the consequences to get what he wanted and sometimes just to take...period. He lied, he blackmailed, his word was no good, all he thought about was money and sex and I got so very tired of reading about how much he wanted her. She wanted him too and she was like concrete, immovable, not giving in. But after she did give in, there were times, as hard as she was, she gave in much too quickly.

I felt exhausted after I finished this book and needed to visit my chiropractor to treat my whiplash. When I read, I like to have a feel-good moment at the end of a book, but all I felt was agitated, frustration, anger, and wondered how two people could be so stupid and waste so many years because their fathers were enemies.

6/29/17 ~ I made a grave error and decided to read books 1-3 in this series for the second time. I couldn't remember this book two at all and didn't have a computer to look it up on Goodreads to see if I had read it. It was just a really bad book and I never saw the love. I would have castrated the hero and taped the heroine's mouth to shut her up!

I could recommend this to no one, not even to complete a series. Most of the way through it didn't make a lot of sense. It bothered me for two days after completing and quickly moved on to other books to get this off my mind.

I love Megan Bryce but this book was not worth the time or effort.
