With rich and glorious imaginations, this book describes the struggle of the master and his three apprentices with the tough environment on the way to the west and transforms the numerous difficulties and dangers into the eighty-one sufferings created by all sorts of evil spirits to vividly show the ruthless environmental obstacles with the sentient spirits changed from animals. It praises the pilgrims' fighting spirit of overcoming hardships and encourages people to fight positively, never lose heart and be indomitable to achieve goals.
A decent enough read, compressed to a manageable size, as a learner I thought the characters they chose to add Pinyin too was......... strange.
Also, I kinda felt the plot and dynamics were a bit predictable, and there wasn't much character development. Its a Chinese classic, but I think its best enjoyed as it was probably originally told (much like the Homeric epics) as a collection of short stories rather than one narrative.
