Perfect for fans of Carolyn Haines and Donna Andrews, Lillian Bell makes the return with her second Funeral Parlor mystery featuring funeral director Desiree Turner.
When an unnatural cause of death finds one of her clients, Desiree must get to the bottom of the murder before she’s fitted for a coffin, herself.
Funeral director Desiree Turner deals with death by natural causes all the time. Death by unnatural causes? Not so much. Yet, she and her boyfriend Nate have heard some not-so-dear things about the recently departed. A suspicious remark by the late Frank Fiore’s daughters sparks some concern. And when Violet Daugherty faints behind the wheel of her car, Desiree suspects she’s got a front seat to murder.
Desiree can’t help but look into Violet’s untimely end, but soon after, rumors begin to spread that she’s accusing her clients of murder, which quickly spurs a mass cancellation and Desiree is on the verge of going out of business. What began as an effort to do due diligence for her client turns into a wild goose chase for Violet’s murderer. Desiree must find her proof before everything she works for is lost. But that’s easier said than done, because while everyone else in town is looking to take their business elsewhere, the killer sets sights directly upon Desiree.
Now it’s up to Desiree to find the murderer before she becomes the next body her funeral parlor serves in If the Coffin Fits, Lillian Bell’s second charming Funeral Parlor mystery.
If the Coffin Fits by Lillian Bell is the second book in the cozy A Funeral Parlor Mystery series. Each book in this series does have it’s own murder mystery to be solved however there is an extra mystery going on in the main character’s life that has carried over from book to book. Due to this part of the story the series would definitely be best read from the beginning.
This series is centered around Desiree Turner who had returned home to Verbena, California after making a huge error in her job as a journalist. Knowing her family could use the help in the family owed funeral home they operated Desiree thought she take the time to figure out what to do about her career.
Now in If the Coffin Fits Desiree is working at the funeral home and working part time for the local paper. As she’s overseeing a couple of recent funerals Desiree overhears a conversation that makes her question the clients and also finds that there’s suspicion surrounding one of the other recent deaths leaving Desiree to search for answers when pushing the local law enforcement to investigate doesn’t work out.
One thing I love about this series is the author has formatted the story in a unique way that fits the character quite well. Each of the chapters gives a short news article at the beginning that ties in with what is going on to show Desiree’s journalistic side. The story is also an interesting one with a side of quirkiness that I enjoy so I loved settling in once again with this series. With a cliffhanger end to the personal side of the story I’ll definitely be anxiously awaiting the next installment.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Release Date: September 11, 2018 Genre: Cozy Mystery Actual Rating: 4 stars
Another enjoyable cozy mystery from Lillian Bell! I really like this series. The fact that it's set around a funeral parlor (with the heroine working there with her family) is quite original. Even more, the characters are top notch. Desiree Turner is quickly becoming one of my favorite sleuths and I know I am going to continue to plow through this series right beside her. I think the ending of this one is pretty intriguing as well. It doesn't end in a cliffhanger but the last page really ends in a bang making me want the next book that much more!
If you are a fan of cozy mysteries and amateur sleuths, I very much recommend reading the Funeral Parlor mystery series. It's a fantastic one!
If the Coffin Fits was the first book from Lillian Bell that I read...and I loved it! The writing style hooked me from the first sentence and I felt right at home in this story. Yes, I could tell that there was another one in this series that I missed but it didn't take away from the mystery. It makes me want to go back and read it before the next one comes out though.
There were a lot of clues and red herrings mixed in with this twisting and turning mystery. It was fun and well paced and I enjoyed all the characters - the likable ones and the not so likable ones just as much.
The mystery was solved completely and satisfactory but there was quite a big cliffhanger on the background story which I didn't mind.
I requested this book from NetGalley and am thankful that Crooked Lane Books and the author provided me with an advance copy.
Desiree “Death Ray” Turner can’t seem to keep her nose clean. All she has to do at her family’s funeral home is talk to the bereaved in a kind and sympathetic manner. What she ends up doing is accusing them of murder!! Since she can’t accept the fact that one woman was killed in an accident, not only does Desiree end up adopting her dog but she also sniffs out a murderer! This book in the the 2nd in the Funeral Parlor mystery series and it was just as good as the 1st. Desiree, her friends and her family are relatable, the setting is unique, and the mystery contained enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the very end. What gives this book an extra star is the mystery within the mystery concerning Desiree’s (presumed dead) father. Desiree uncovers more clues and leaves us with such an intriguing cliffhanger at the end that you will be eager to read the next in the series. I definitely would love to read more by this author.
The second book in the Funeral Parlor mysteries has Desiree Turner deciding to help a distant relative with the estate of Violet Daugherty. The car accident that took Violet's life was rule an accident, Desiree feels that it wasn't an accident and begins to look into what happened. Does she find evidence to support her theory? She feels that there is something wrong with a Funeral and question The daughter about it. Rumors begin that Desiree is accusing relatives about the deaths and Turner Funeral Parlor loses several funerals because of the rumors. These two themes are skillfully brought together as one tale. There is a major twist at the end. I highly recommend this book.
Disclosure: Many thanks to Crooked Lane Books for a review copy. The opinions expressed are my own.
It’s always a treat to hang out with Desiree Turner and friends again. While reading this series you find yourself forgetting that the setting is a funeral home. Somehow Desiree’s knack for bringing scandal to the Turner Family Funeral Home makes you forget about that. This book finds Desiree up to her neck in trouble. She’s still working as an assistant funeral director while her sister, Donna is slowly getting off bed rest due to her troubled pregnancy. Desiree has promised she would stay out of trouble so Donna could rest peacefully. Well, that’s not going to happen. Desiree finds herself overhearing two sisters squabbling over the finalization of their father’s funeral; a few days before a young woman who was healthy by all accounts has a car accident that raises Nate’s suspicions, he’s concerned by several factors of this woman’s death. He’s brought it to Luke’s attention, the detective for VPD and it’s fallen on deaf ears. But Nate is convinced of foul play. Desiree contacts the deceased woman’s next kin and she's clueless, not only is she across the country but she’s never met Violet, Desiree feels sorry for the cousin and agrees to help take care Violet’s estate for her. She finds more than she bargains when she agrees to help Nate investigate Violet’s death and deal with her scattered brained cousin. The only plus so far happens to be Violet’s puppy which at first leaves Desiree in a full panic. What on earth will she do with this lovable puppy? She’s promised her family she’ll get rid of it but as time goes on, it’s harder and harder. Several odd things happen while they are investigating Violet’s death. Again Desiree has brought trouble to the family business, they are getting cancellations and talk is going around about Desiree’s crazy accusations. She’s finding out a lot about certain members of the town. Violet wasn’t a very likable person and Desiree is caught between a rock and hard place with all the information she’s gathered. She’s also discovers something that will change her families lives forever. This is such a fun cozy, I’ve read the first one but it reads well as a stand-alone. The characters are so engaging and I love the way the writer left it open. I would love to see another book in this series.
DISCLOSURE: I was provided a copy of this galley from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. The opinion I expressed above are my own.
If The Coffin Fits is the second book The Funeral Parlor Mysteries series.
The story begins with Daisy and Iris visiting the Turner Funeral Parlor to make burial arrangements for the father who had been in home hospice care. Desiree Turner asks a question that the sisters take as accusing them of bringing their father to an earlier death. Soon Desiree is sent to the hospital to pick up the body of Violet Dougherty who has died from injuries in a single car accident. Desiree is surprised that nothing had been found to call the death anything other than an accident. As a part-time reporter for the Verbena Free Press, she had covered the accident and she has her doubts that is was simply an accident. She keeps asking Nate Johar, the M.E. if he is absolutely sure that there were no questionable marks on the body. Finally, he does find some questionable marks on the body.
Desiree calls the only relative of Violet, Lizette a cousin who lives across the country, to work out the details of Violet’s funeral. But basically, she asks to handle the planning and to also do what would be necessary to put Violet’s house for sale. This is far beyond the responsibilities of a funeral home but makes it easier for Desiree to look into how Violet actually died. Going through the house Desiree finds some candid photograph of residents of Verbena in embarrassing situations. She soon learns that Violet was not well liked and that Violet might be using the pictures to bribe or blackmail those in the pictures. But first, she needs to find who might have the most to lose if their pictures became public.
Another well-told and plotted story with an interesting cast of characters.
I will be watching for the next book in the series to see what Desiree might be up to next. Also will be interested in seeing what new information regarding her father’s disappearance.
IF THE COFFIN FITS is the second book in A Funeral Parlor Mystery series by Lillian Bell but the first that I’ve had a chance to read. I was happy to find that I could easily follow the subplot of her father’s disappearance, which is carried over from the first book. Ms. Bell provides enough details without slowing down the pace of this new book. I greatly enjoyed the unique funeral home setting for protagonist, Desiree Turner. She is a feisty young woman with a possibly over-active curiosity, which gets her and her family’s business in trouble. Even though there is no sign of foul play, she sets her sights on finding evidence when she has a feeling that something is wrong in two separate deaths. One of the stars of the book is Orion, the puppy Desiree fosters when his owner is murdered. You can’t help but melt a little with each scene Orion is in which brings an emotional element to the story. The other supporting characters are well-developed. I especially enjoyed her uncle and learning the secret he tried to hide from the family. Ms. Bell writes with humor and a deft hand that connects each scene with clues to keep the reader turning pages. The surprising ending has me anticipating the next installment!
I was provided an advance copy via Netgalley with the hopes I would review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I don’t know when I’ve enjoyed a cozy mystery as much as If the Coffin Fits, book #2 in the Funeral Parlor Mysteries series by Lillian Bell. This new-to-me author has crafted the most delightful storyline and a lead character that I want to spend more and more time with. Bell’s writing is smooth, filled with snappy dialogue, and flows steadily across the page; not a wasted word to be found here. The sense of humor that comes across effortlessly in the prose makes me wish I could meet this author personally.
Two elements that surprised me personally turned out to be huge strengths. First, the funeral parlor setting and theme, which was not depressing at all. Quite humorous, in fact. Despite the best of intentions, Desiree seems to be accident prone when it comes to her words, which is kind of how she ended back up in the family business in the first place. And then there’s the family, the mystery around Desiree’s dad in particular. Is he really dead? Only time will tell.
The second surprising element is Orion, a malamute and German shepherd mix who instantly stole this cat lover’s heart. I loved his antics, the way he interacted with Desiree and her reluctance to seek a home for him – but when he showed an unusual sensitivity to the needs of funeral parlor clients, I was hooked. The idea of Orion possibly becoming a therapy dog was fascinating.
Strong secondary characters add depth and complexity, as well as possible romantic interests for Desiree. I also loved her easy curiosity and sense that the occasional deceased person might not have died a natural death. Cleverly woven into the narrative are several short articles Desiree has written for her hometown newspaper, the Verbena Free Press. The mystery plot is well crafted and easy to follow, but not easy for me to solve.
If the Coffin Fits goes on my favorites list and I’m eager to read more of Lillian Bell’s mysteries. May there be many more books in this series! Highly recommended.
Note: There’s some mild profanity that I wish had been omitted, but very clean otherwise.
I received a copy of this book through the Review Crew and Crooked Lane Books. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
If the Coffin Fits is the second book in this incredible series by Lillian Bell. It isn't often that I gush about a book, but this one is deserving. Desiree may have lost her job as an investigative journalist, but that doesn't stop her from asking questions when something feels off. What appears to be a tragic car accident turns sinister and Desiree refuses to stop poking into other people's lives. This is an intense story full of secrets and lies. The author writes such a well told story that this could be read as a stand alone. I was glued to my kindle the whole time and I truly felt that I was right there with this colorful cast of characters. The cliff hangers the end has me creating my own scenarios in my head, I can't wait until the next book is out. If you aren't familiar with this series, I highly recommend it to any cozy mystery fans out there. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for approving me to read and review an ARC of this book.
Desiree Turner has returned home to Verbena, California with her tail between her legs after being fired from the TV job. Now she's an assistant funeral director at her family's business. But when she hears a suspicious remark from one of their client's daughter, Desiree thinks foul play is involved in the man's death. She's quickly disavowed of that notion by her boyfriend, medical examiner Nate, who finds nothing suspicious in his examination.
But when Violet Daugherty faints behind the wheel of her car, Desiree suspects this death will be different. At first, Nate doesn't agree, but he soon finds evidence that Desiree is correct. She starts to investigate, and soon rumors start to swirl that Desiree is accusing her clients of murder, which quickly spurs a mass cancellation and puts the family funeral home in danger of closing.
It's up to Desiree and her new friend, Orion, to get to the bottom of things, before Desiree needs a coffin for herself.
Wonderful plotted and written, If the Coffin Fits is the second book in the Funeral Parlor series. I haven't read the first one, and I was a bit afraid I would be lost, but the author provides just the right amount of backstory for those who haven't read the first book in the series.
Desiree is a great character, strong and spunky and the perfect leader to tell the tale that surrounds Violet's death. Other doubt her words, but she knows what she believes is true and works hard to prove it.
The interactions between Desiree, her boyfriend Nate, her family and the members of the town move the story along at a fast pace. It is one of those books that, when I was not reading it I was thinking about it, and what would happen next. Each chapter begins with a story from the newspaper who Desiree works as a stringer. These tidbits of life in Verbena add flare and color to the book, and provide an insight into the characters.
There is a perfect amount of suspects, and I did not guess whodunit until the last part of the book. In fact, I thought I'd had it all figured out, and then I was shaking my head wondering how I had missed the real solution.
I am looking forward to reading the first book in the series, and, hopefully, many more to come.
I received a digital ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
“If the Coffin Fits” earns 5/5 Funeral Arrangements…Engaging, Clever, Fun!
My mother always said, “Be careful what you say!” Desiree Turner learns this the hard way. She overhears Daisy accuse her sister Iris of “something” about which both are very secretive. The sisters are arranging their father’s funeral with the Turner Funeral Home, so the odd comment is curious at best, worrisome at worst since their father’s death from a long illness comes into question. Desiree’s boyfriend Nate Johar is the local ME, so asking for an informal verification seems easy enough to satisfy any niggling feelings. But, when Iris shows up to deliver a funeral suit, a wrong comment infuriates the sister. Ok, did Desiree just accuse the sister of foul play? It seems just a misunderstanding, but when town gossip turns into cancellations of services and another client succumbing in a traffic accident seeming less and less accidental, Desiree is compelled to uncover the truth for the sake of justice if not just to save the family business.
A fan of “A Grave Issue,” book one in Lillian Bell’s Funeral Parlor Mysteries, I was very eager to continue my reading journey, and was not disappointed! I thoroughly enjoyed how each chapter began with an article from the Verbena Free Press penned by Desiree herself. We've learned she was a journalist with a viral “oops” in her past, and the articles set up for the reader key issues, local events, and important connections and side dramas to consider. Bell’s first-person narrative was well written with engaging descriptions that lay out well the setting, appearances, clues, evidence, and Desiree’s inner thoughts. Beyond enjoying the narrative, Bell includes entertaining banter that illustrates tone, personality, and emotions. The side drama about Desiree’s father continues to be intriguing, but looks to continue to weave throughout the series. I highly recommend this book, and you don't need to have read the first book since there are no spoilers and enough references to keep you engaged. However, you'll want to read “A Grave Issue” to connect how it all started.
"Disclosure: I received an ARC. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments."
This is the second book in the funeral parlor mysteries and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I like Ms Bell's writing style, no over the top characters, just down to earth people that you meet. This mystery has plenty of twists between overhearing sisters talk that sounds suspicious, a car accident that could be murder, rumors about the parlor, a puppy with no home and the back story mystery of Desiree's father. This book keeps you entertained and I will continue on with this series. A good solid read *I was lucky enough to have received a copy of this book and this is my own opinion.
The second in this new series has Desiree Turner getting more familiar with her job at the family funeral home while she still keeps her hand in journalism by writing local interest stories for the Verbena paper.
Most of the funeral home's patrons die from old age, illness. However being a reporter Desiree just can't help but look for anything suspicious. And when Frank Fiore's daughters seem to be harboring some secrets, Desiree can't help but think poor Mr. Fiore may have had help on his way out.
When another suspicious death comes in, Desiree and Nate are not going to just let it go.
As she pokes her nose in where people wish she wouldn't, she risks losing it all. The business and maybe even her life.
This is a most interesting Cozy series. Set in a funeral home with an ongoing story line that has Desiree still searching for her missing and presumed dead father. And she may just find a clue or two if she can keep herself from being a guest of her own family's services!
The characters are well done, the story never lags and Desiree is now one of my favorite characters.
If The Coffin Fits is the second book in the highly entertaining A Funeral Parlor cozy mystery series by Lillian Bell. When I read A Grave Issue, I knew I was hooked and that I would read all future books in the series, and this one did not disappoint!! From the very first page, the action packed, well paced mystery grabbed my attention, and held it to the very end. I loved all the twists and turns , just when I thought I had it all figured out, I was hit with another suspect.. or motive.
I recommend reading this book as a series, as there is an underlying mystery going on that continues through the first two books, and if you skip book one you are missing a some back story.
This. Was. So. Good. I am so glad that I requested this from NetGalley to voluntarily read and review. I'm also glad I read the first book, not that this book gives any spoilers because it definitely doesn't. But I still had the fun of getting to know the characters from the beginning, and even though jumping in at book 2 wouldn't be bad, I really enjoyed reading them in order so much!
When Desiree suspected one of the funeral home's clients of murder, she was pretty much on her own to figure out why and how she'd done it. She did have her sorta-boyfriend Nate's help since he was county ME, but Luke at the police station was used to looking at her like she was just crazy. Desiree found evidence that one of their deceased clients had been blackmailing quite a few of the community members, which just had to tie in with that client's own death, she hesitated bringing that evidence to Luke for fear he'd just laugh at her. Being shot at made Desiree realize she was getting close...could she solve this without causing her sister to go into premature labor or get killed herself?
I never thought a series set in a funeral parlor would be this good and so interesting! It's really not much about the place itself but the clients they serve and how some of the deaths can end up being murder. I loved that in this book Desiree found a dog to adopt, Uncle Joey found a lady friend and more about Desiree's dad was revealed. Now I really can't wait till the next book!
I actually did figure this one out! There was a tiny clue very early on that I picked up on and remembered. It was fun to see how this played out and the perp got caught. The showdown wasn't physically exciting, but it was more calm excitement worthy of any that I've seen on TV crime/cop shows.
I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book which was released this week.
I very much enjoyed this second book in the series! My phrase for this one is: "Money is the root of all evil."
Desiree is settling in to her job at the family funeral home. She is taking care of arrangements for a funeral when she overhears a suspicious remark and that sets her off to suspecting murder. When it becomes evident that there may have been some crimes, her life gets put in danger. Everyone wants her to back off before she gets killed, but she has a hunch that she can solve her father's disappearance along with a murder.
I was given an eARC by the publisher through NetGalley.
Desiree Turner, one of the daughters of the family-owned Turner Funeral Home finds herself in trouble again. Lillian Bell’s If the Coffin Fits (Funeral Parlor Mystery #2) is a kick! One might think that writing about a funeral parlor might be a bit of a downer, but not with Desiree Turner around. I truly found myself having fun. The characters could be friends of ours. The setting, though a bit different, is not what one would immediately think, and then there is Desiree who always appears to be in the middle-attempting to solve a murder. Add a delightful dog who sticks his paw out to shake hands when he first meets someone as well as lays his head on the lap of someone who is upset, and the book becomes a winner. At least this reader believes this book is a winner - the series also! Looking forward to getting my hands on #3. Well done, Ms. Bell. 5 stars!
If you enjoy witty cozy mysteries with eclectic characters, look no further! I enjoyed this cozy mystery! It is the eagerly-awaited sequel to A Grave Secret, with humor through the worst of days, and challenging mysteries that Desiree gets caught up in. Desiree and Donna grew up in the multi-generational Turner Family Funeral Home, so it is normal for them to live upstairs from the mortuary. Donna’s husband seems content to live there with his bride. Donna is pregnant and doing everything necessary for herself and her child. Their mother died when they were young, so their dad and his brother, Uncle Joey, focused on raising Desiree and Donna while managing the funeral home. Nineteen months earlier, however, their father disappeared when he was surfing by himself. The local police think he drowned, but Desiree believes that he is still alive, perhaps hiding out for some reason, based on some unique little gifts left for herself and Donna at their home. Desiree overhears sisters Iris and Daisy as they come in to arrange for their father’s funeral. It sounds as if Iris may have done something to hasten the death of her father, who she returned to Verbena to care for several years earlier. Desiree asks some probing questions, which irritates Iris. Suddenly people are no longer calling Turner for their loved one’s funerals, they have cancellations, and her family is upset with her. Purely by accident, Desiree finds an interesting box of photos in the home of Violet, a recently-deceased woman’s home. Desiree asks even more questions, and people get mighty upset with the former investigative television reporter. Nate, the guy she is dating, is worried about her as the photo lady may have been murdered. Luke, the police chief, refuses to investigate, so Desiree is hot on the trail in this witty cozy mystery. I like the Turner family! Even when upset with each other, they have each other’s back. Desiree is a young woman who would like to get back into investigative reporting and does minor pieces for the local Free Press. She is the only person who has held on to the hope that her father is still alive and follows possible clues. Donna grieves the loss of her father but refuses to consider he might be alive. Uncle Joey and their father were closer than most brothers; his grief has been immense. Nate, the medical examiner and local practicing doctor, and Jasmine, Desiree’s BFF since preschool, support her as she searches for the truth. From the start, this was a novel that was easy to lose myself in. Desiree certainly has more courage than I do, and somehow the quirky characters fit together well. That includes the large puppy she is fostering, Orion. There were many people who might have wanted to kill Violet, but a few felt her nasty actions helped them change their lives for the better. Plot twists keep the mystery fascinating as potential suspects change. I did guess who the bad guy/ gal might be, and even the motive, a while before Desiree does, but none of the clues were obvious. There are still surprises at the end, and I look forward to the next novel in the series! I highly recommend If the Coffin Fits, to those who enjoy well-written and witty cozy mysteries, as well as a story in which dogs rock and at the end of the day, family is still family. From a grateful heart: I received a copy of this book from the publisher, and this is my honest review.
3.5 stars IF THE COFFIN FITS, the second book in Lillian Bell’s Funeral Parlor Mystery Series, is light and entertaining. Its strong protagonist, appealing supporting characters, unique setting, and interesting murder mystery come together to make an enjoyable cozy adventure.
Desiree Turner grew up in the family business but left home to be a TV investigative journalist. A bad end to her job leads her back to Taylor Family Funeral Home where she is biding her time, trying to decide what path she wants her future to take. In addition to her funeral duties, she also writes for the local newspaper and is the only person who believes her father, who disappeared without a trace, is still alive. When Violet Daugherty dies in an apparent accident, Desiree and her ME boyfriend Nate think there is more to it. Desiree cannot keep her reporter nose out of it and starts asking questions and making accusations. Questions that have led to a slew of funeral cancellations. Despite promising her family to stay out of it, she cannot help but follow the clues to uncover the truth.
I worked in a funeral home for years so it is no surprise that this series caught my eye, and I was not disappointed in reading IF THE COFFIN FITS. I have not read the first book (but plan to remedy that ASAP), but I had no trouble jumping right into the story and feel like I already know the characters. Desiree’s unique reporter skills make her a top notch amateur sleuth, and I think she genuinely wants to help people. This sometimes leads her to do some stupid stuff, but, thankfully, she never crosses over into “too stupid to live” territory. The supporting cast is full of appealing, witty characters, adding interest to the tale. I especially like Uncle Joey and Nate. And the victim’s dog Orion is delightful and definitely my favorite. I hope he becomes an integral part of the series.
The mystery surrounding Violet’s death is solidly written with an ever changing slew of suspects. There are plenty of twists and turns making the story compelling. I did guess whodunit and their motive pretty early in the book, but this did not deter my enjoyment, and it is fun to let the mystery play out alongside Desiree. The book does not end with a cliff hanger exactly, but I definitely now cannot wait for the next book to be released. I need to know.
IF THE COFFIN FITS is a fun whodunit. I recommend it to any cozy mystery fan.
I received a copy of this title from the publisher and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.
Violet Daugherty’s death seems an accident, a case of drowsy driving. Meanwhile, a comment made during the funeral planning for Frank Fiore has Funeral Director and reporter Desiree Turner questioning if something more sinister is going on in Verbena. Unfortunately, the rumor mill runs rampant in the small town and soon Desiree is faced with losing business, as everyone is worried they too will be accused of murder. Will Desiree risk the family business and defy her family’s orders or will she ignore her reporter’s instincts and sit this one out?
IF THE COFFIN FITS is the second book in Lillian Bell’s A Funeral Parlor Mystery series. New readers to the series can easily jump right in and enjoy the series. Lillian Bell provides enough of the history on the characters that it’s easy to follow the mystery.
I was a little concerned about how I would enjoy a story featuring a funeral parlor and the funeral director but Lillian Bell pulled me right into her story line. Heck, Desiree has her own reservations about working for the family business and it is that edge that helps make IF THE COFFIN FITS so enjoyable. I like that Desiree is also a reporter as it also makes her amateur sleuthing far more believable.
IF THE COFFIN FITS is an entertaining cozy mystery coupled with some fascinating side stories. The conclusion of the book leaves me with so many questions that I can’t wait to see answered in the next book! If you love cozy mysteries with unconventional jobs (like a funeral director), then IF THE COFFIN FITS may just be your cup of tea as well.
Desiree Turner is a Funeral Director. Her family owns and operates The Turner Family Funeral Home and now that she's back home in Verbena she's involved in the family business. Desiree has a healthy curiosity which gets her and the Funeral Home in trouble. She knows that someone committed a murder. She just needs to convince the Sheriff that Violet Daugherty was the killer's victim. As her family tries to convince her to stop, Desiree and her sidekick, Orion, follow the clues. I liked all the characters in If The Coffin Fits. Desiree is smart and uses her investigative skills to make sense of the clues. Orion, Violet's much loved pet, adds his unconditional love to the story. Rafe, the owner of The Verbena Free Press, adds a touch of romance which was unexpected. I liked how he helps Desiree get her priorities in order. Of course, we mustn't forget Nate Johar, her boyfriend, who gave her the initial clue. I felt that this was a joint effort by all these diverse characters. I couldn't stop reading this cozy mystery. I want to know what happened to Desiree and Donna's father. Is he still alive? I really need to know. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. Lillian Bell has me hooked. She's written a suspenseful well-written cozy. I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
This is the second book in the Funeral Parlor Mystery series. Although I did not read the first book in this series, it was easy to pick up on the characters' relationships with each other. Desiree Turner, her sister Donna and Uncle Joey are running the local funeral home. But Desiree's suspicions are raised after overhearing a conversation between Daisy and Iris Fiore, while they were planning their father's funeral. So she asks her boyfriend, Coroner Nate, to check out the body just in case, and while he is there he also checks out the other cadaver waiting for services, Violet Daugherty. While the father seems to have died of natural causes, Violet's death is a little more unusual. However, without concrete evidence, Desiree cannot get the police to check into it. So while helping a distant relative get Violet's estate ready, Desiree begins her own investigation. Along the way, she gains an adorable puppy, Orion, that belonged to Violet and has no apparent home. Together, Desiree and Orion talk to several people involved in Violet's activities for the past few days. Unfortunately her sleuthing must have hit a nerve because someone has decided that Desiree needs to be eliminated. This was a fun series filled with lots of clues as to the cause and identity of the murder. I loved how Orion quickly became an important part of Desiree's life. I also enjoyed how Desiree related to her family and friends. The subplot involved Desiree's suspicions that her father was still alive, despite evidence of his drowning. This is to be continued in the next book, which I look forward to reading. Disclosure: I am voluntarily reviewing an advance reading copy of this book.
I am never picky or harsh on books/the writing, but it was immature writing in some ways. There were multiple spelling and grammatical errors and even inconsistencies in some of the details of the story.
This is the second installment in the Funeral Parlor series. Desiree Turner is a funeral director in her family's business in Verbena, California. Although two separate deaths brought into their mortuary appear to be routine cases, she believes that there is something sinister about them and decides to investigate. She discovers many secrets which affect the people of her small town, including herself.
I enjoyed this book very much. Desiree was an amiable character and I liked her even more when she adopted the dog Orion, who became homeless after his owner passed away. The funeral parlor setting was unique for a cozy mystery. It was well-written and the mystery kept me engaged throughout the book. While I had some suspicion of the killer's identity early on, the plot twists kept me guessing the killer's identity until the very end. It was also a relief to have Desiree involved in a romantic relationship with someone not in law enforcement!
Thanks to the Cozy Mystery Review Crew for a complimentary copy of this book. My review is voluntary.
I want to start my review off explaining the three stars. I did not like this book very much and I cannot pinpoint why. I personally think it was just not the right time for me to read it (too many deaths in our family this year). I heavily suggest you read the first book as there is a lot of back story and another mystery that continues from book to book. Not knowing the background of either did not help me like the book. There were explanations of both but I still felt a little lost and confused at times.
I have bought the first book and will read it when I am in a better frame of mind and will re-read the second book. I honestly do think this can be a series I will like and will enjoy to read. Stay tuned to see if reading the series from the beginning and re-reading the second book changes my mind.
Desiree definitely dances to her own tune. Her newly acquired dog, Orion, stole the show for me. He is the reason I kept reading. I love the idea of the possibility of him becoming a therapy dog. I wish more funeral homes would look into this as special needs kids and adults would find these dogs extremely helpful during a time most cannot understand.
In "If the Coffin Fits" Desiree starts out helping the Fiore sisters plan their father's funeral. A death that is not unexpected and is merciful as Mr. Fiore has suffered years under the care of hospice. Desiree hears the sisters arguing quietly and one accuses the other of something but she is not sure what. Tact may not be in Desiree's realm of running a funeral home. She comes right out and accuses a sister of murdering their own father. Before Desiree can correct her gaffe, Violet Daugherty is brought in after she faints behind the wheel of her car. When the medical examine turns up some questions, Desiree finds herself in more hot water. Not only with the Fiore sisters but the town itself when they start cancelling and going to other funeral homes. Will Desiree survive this round of questionable deaths in order to continue on her search for her own father who has mysteriously disappeared?
Thank you to the author for a copy of the book for an honest review. Any and all opinions are entirely my own.
WOW !!! If you thought the first book in A Funeral Parlor Mystery, A Grave Issue, by Lillan Bell was a great read......Hang on to your hats !!!
Lillian Bell captured the reader in A Grave Issue and left the reader with the best cliffhanger she could. This cliffhanger made it so you could not wait until the next installment in this series. I know I was hooked and looking forward to the next book.
And she did not disappoint with If the Coffin Fits. She actually did it again !!! Another great story with another awesome cliffhanger !! Bell makes it so you almost want to skip ahead to the end of the story.....but you won't because then you will miss out on so much more !!!
You cannot help but fall in love with Desiree, her family and friends, and even the story !! Of course you expect there to be death when you read a book centered around a funeral parlor and, of course, because the book is considered a cozy mystery and these books do not disappoint !! All Desiree has to do is her job...but when things don't feel right, she wouldn't be her if she didn't look into things....no matter what everybody tells her to do.
One of the reasons that I enjoy this series is the setting. When I was young we use to visit my father's family at their funeral home. To some it may be scary or depressing but to me it was anything but. My great-aunt and uncle made sure to educate my brother and I on the in's and out's of the funeral parlor scene. Reading this series with this setting takes me back....and even if funeral parlors aren't your cup tea, you will still love this series and the ending will have you counting down the days until the next book in this series. (Hurry up Lillian.....I got to know what happens next !!!!)
Desiree may have left her job as an investigative reporter behind, but she certainly didn’t lose her nose for trouble. A suspicious conversation overheard at her family’s funeral home leads Desiree to look for wrongdoing. Violet Daugherty died in a one person accident, apparently a victim of drowsy driving. But Nate, Desiree’s friend and the local medical examiner, finds a few items that don’t add up - but is it murder? As Desiree digs into Violet’s life, the suspects multiply, and someone may be willing to kill again to keep from being discovered.
If the Coffin Fits is an intriguing mystery that looks at how far people will go to belong and looks at the very real drama that arises when family connections long hidden are discovered. Desiree’s investigations have consequences, for her family’s business as well as herself but that doesn’t mean that they don’t pull together when she is in danger. If the Coffin Fits is an excellent cozy mystery that tackles one of the difficult questions today - what do you do when dna testing shows you have family you never knew existed.

I received a copy of If the Coffin Fits from the publisher and Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
This is a charming and entertaining second installment in the Funeral Parlor Mystery series. Desiree Turner is a very likable character with a penchant for getting herself into trouble. It's the reporter instinct and her sense of fair play. The author has surrounded her with a cast of secondary characters who have their work cut out keeping Desiree out of trouble. I love Orion the dog. I'm hoping he will become a central character in future installments. The mystery was nicely done. The author did a terrific job of weaving it together in a way that kept me engaged throughout the entire book. There were plenty of twists and turns with several plausible suspects but in the end I was surprised in a good way from the motive behind the murder.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Crooked Lane Books, through Netgalley.
'If the Coffin Fits' is the second book in the Funeral Parlor Mystery series by Lillian Bell, and I'm enjoying the series even more than the first book. Desiree is up to her investigating again against her family's wishes, even where there might not be something to investigate. Along the way she acquires a dog, Orion, and I love this dog! What a great character to add to the book. Even while all of this is going on, she still is suspicious about her father's disappearance and continues to believe he is still alive.
I really enjoyed this book. There were a couple of parts that were repetitive, but overall a good read. I did make the connection of what was going on about half way through, but it's not completely obvious like some cozy mysteries.
However, while this main story is tied up by the end of the book, it leaves you with a cliffhanger.. and I cannot wait to read the next one in this series to find out what happens!!
