Living in Your True Identity: Discover, Embrace, and Develop Your Own Divine Nature

Rate this book
DID YOU KNOW YOU HAVE TWO IDENTITIES?
One is true and one is false. No wonder it can often feel confusing to know who you really are! The false identity is the negative voice in your mind that scripture refers to as the“natural man.” Your true identity is your divine nature of who God designed you to be.
With today’s culture of comparison, self-degradation, and social-media idolization, it is easy to lose sight of the true you and get buried under your false identity. But beneath the layers of society’s expectations, the roles you fill, and the messages you’ve been told, you’ll find your whole, perfect, and worthy self. Just as the tiny acorn seed contains the blueprint to grow into a mighty oak tree, you too have within you the seed of greatness. Filled with self-building exercises and tools, this empowering book will help you begin experiencing more of your life in the best way ever—as you!

Kind of feel like this should be a required reading if you’re a human. Brooke Snow did an awesome job at teaching me who I really am, and who I am not, in a way that really hits home. I feel more secure in who I am and no longer want to hide. I appreciate the gifts in others more, too. I came away from the book feeling empowered to co-create my life with God. Love love love it.

Discovering Brooke Snow, her podcast, this book, her app have really helped me to find the truth about my true identity and my false identity. Brooke is the queen of self care tools that actually work: yoga, meditation, breathing techniques, prayer journaling, visualization, journaling, scripture study, etc.

I encourage everyone to read this book!

This has been one of my favorite self-help books ever. I started listening to this author’s podcasts and loved her so much that I had to order her book. I’ve since sent it to a friend who was suffering through some hard times. It’s so inspiring and gives so much practical insights into our true identity and our false one, and how to clear out the bad to make room for our true self to shine. This author helped me see my life in a new perspective—one that really resonated with my soul. I’ve already started putting several of her ideas into practice in my daily routine and I love how I feel. Thank you, Brooke Snow, for sharing yourself and your experiences that led to your insights in this book. I am a better person for having read and listened to your words.

Can I just say "life-changing"? My goodness. My sister-in-law suggested this title, said it was awesome. Took me a minute to get into it. But then - wow. I had ordered a library copy because I wasn't sure I wanted to invest. But- just got my copy from Amazon today, so I could mark it up.

I had heard the "Two Wolves" story long ago and have always totally believed/loved it. Lots of people know it. But that's what this book is about, with a gospel perspective.

I so much enjoyed all her fabulous stories, especially near the end about "Belonging". So interesting account of her coming home, after her mission and what happens at the airport.... I was fascinated by the Science of Self Care and the Resonance Experiment.

Just sad, what she had to go through to get to this point in her life.. :(

The last line of the book says it all....
"When I finally let go of my own plans and allow the Lord to build me instead--trusting His vision and intention-I am awed at the resulting creation. It is more beautiful than anything I could imagine"....

Anyway, this is a "keeper". Thank you Christy <3

I loved this book!!! It took me a while to read because there was so much goodness to ponder on and even implement. She even has journaling questions at the end of each chapter to guide you to apply what she just taught. It is well worth the time to read this book.

This book unlocked years of struggle for me.
If you feel lost, hopeless, exhausted...
Living in your true identity will break through pain and open powerful healing within your body. For me, reading this book was like drinking water from heaven- nourishing, comforting, familiar eternal truth. Her suggested tools all reside within your own body and point to Jesus Christ. This empowers me. I feel clearer direction, renewed hope, and infinite love. I want to share this book with everyone! Your wisdom is my treasure Brooke, thank you!!

Re-read 2019: I listened to her book this summer through her weekly podcasts. It was fun to hear it read from the author. This was a great book to revisit! Highly recommend

2018: I came at this book a little biased. I love the Brooke Snow podcast and I have taken one of her self-improvement courses. Her voice resonates with me. So naturally I was a fan of her book. Even still, I found plenty of aha moments and inspiring wisdom that I am slowly by surely applying. I love noticing when my false identity is present and when my true identity is showing up. It allows me to notice what I am doing to feed those dual identities. I feel like I am more accepting of all of me, with a desire to live more in the true identity. I highly recommend Brooke and her work!

I am clearly not the target audience for this book, but my mom recommended it to the family so here I am.

This book made me sad. Judging from the other reviews, it looks like a lot of people (mostly white women) have really benefited from the book, and of course that makes me happy. The book is basically a how-to guide for emotional maturity, and the content generally reflects lessons I've learned on my own journey toward emotional maturity. If this book works for you, then that's great. But you're not going to solve every emotional problem with this book; there are some cases, like anxiety, depression, and PTSD, where you're probably going to need some professional help. And that's fine! I've done it, and the author did too - but you could easily miss that, since she only mentions it once as a throwaway comment in an unrelated paragraph on p. 97. To me, she spends too much time discussing the symptoms of anxiety/depression/PTSD to not call it by its name and give it its proper due.

The other reason this book made me sad is more metatextual: why does this book need to exist at all? Why does this book appeal to so many otherwise well-to-do white Mormon women? I can't help but be reminded of Betty Friedan's classic, The Feminine Mystique. Despite being nearly 60 old, I recommend it as a next step for anyone who found this book helpful.

This book was so hard for me to read, and not in an "I am going to improve my life" sort of way. It was more of a "I disagree with what the author is saying on a fundamental level" sort of way.

The basic premise of the book is that we have a divine nature and a natural man (yes) and everything bad is part of the natural "false" man and everything good is our divine "true" identity (uh, no). Now I understand that there are some coping tactics in which the bad is considered to be outside of our being and we must calmly deal with it. But this feels like a pure rejection of that part in conjunction with the self. I feel, rather, that I, as my whole self, was sent here as a hunk of marble and my natural man is the uncut stone which I need to smooth and polish to become more like our Heavenly Father.

There are other very questionable things for me in the book, including the affirmations "I see my parents as tiny children who need love", and "All my needs and desires are met before I even ask". What?! And then there's her humble brag that the only habit she's ever been able to keep is that of eating a clean, "unprocessed" diet.

The author, of course, cites prophets both ancient and modern, but I don't always agree with her interpretation of the source material. There are good things, but they feel few and far between.

If you are going to read this book, I would encourage prayer for the gift of discernment to know what is truth.

I first heard of Brook Snow when someone recommended her pod cast about holding space. (Which I am a firm believer in), but I wanted to understand more about what it truly means. I am still learning a lot about mindset. Trying not to cross the path's of toxic positivity & truly you can choose your thoughts has presented a unique challenge to me. This book is written like a pep talk, that if you believe in God, allows you to align your personal values and trying to understand the way God truly sees you. Books like this can sometimes be a challenge for me, mostly because they can almost be *too* uplifting (I'm really not trying to be a downer), but meaning that it almost written to feel easy. That understanding this about yourself is easy, when in fact it takes a lot of work, and mind shifting. Over

Many good and true points. It is helpful inspiration as a study journal. She asked great questions. It had the feel of an informal lecture or class. I particularly liked the parts where she encouraged separating your roles from your attributes and her focus on breathing, writing, introspection, affirmations, social media usage, and creation. There were parts I wish she would have elaborated on and explained better. At times the writing felt hurried or not quite thoroughly conceived. There were several points that I wrote in the margins that her statement was false or connection wasn’t a good one. Otherwise, a helpful and uplifting read. A fun one to discuss for a women’s LDS book club.

Really didn’t quite know what to expect going into this book. I was pleasantly surprised. I learned more about myself than I anticipated. Brooke’s writing is easy to read and the organization of the book is clean. The suggestions and exercises outlined in the book are totally doable and have produced some valuable thoughts and feelings. The guidance on social media usage was particularly good and came at an excellent time for me. Good read. One I will keep and reread when I feel like I need a boost.

I love Brooke and her podcasts, and this book is a fabulous resource and the basis for most of what she talks about on her podcasts. I marked this book up and I refer to it often. It's the one book that I keep out and refer to often. I love Brooke's insights and the 'law of creation' is something that makes so much sense! This is more of a 'workbook' type book, meaning that it's not just a sit down and read it and enjoy. It has started me on a journey these last few months and it has been life changing for me.

Great book to read if you struggle with any self-doubt or really just in general. I was surprised to find it wasn't too sappy which I was expecting. There was still a little bit, but is wasn't bad. I found many of the things to not be new after having attended counseling for a couple years, but the way in which they were presented was fresh. I loved the idea of two identities and loved the little journal prompts. Great gift idea. I loved how short it was. Brooke Snow does a great job distilling the information down.

I love the changes in my life that have come from trying to live in my true identity. It definitely is a process, but daily habits, no matter how small, make such a difference. Every page, you'll find nuggets of truth. This is a book I enjoy in small bites at a time.

I loved how simple and practical this book was. So many self-help books become so overwhelming with how abstract they are, but this one is helping me implement change in my life. Short, simple, to the point.

I tend to enjoy learning, so I read a lot of self help kinds of books. But eventually I realize they are just someone else's ideas. I really like that Brooke bases everything in the gospel. It gives the ideas more validity. They seem sound and doable.

Good overall summary of the connection between mind, body, and soul including energy, but felt surface level for me. However I've done a lot of research on this area so I think this is a great book for anyone knew to this line of thinking.

“In His perfect love, He knocked because He desired to come in and be with me. He knocked because He desired to help clean things up and restore beauty. This wasn’t a one-time visit. He intended to move right in! To live each day working together to make my world more beautiful” (98).
