Darkstar Mercenaries #0.5

A Darkside Interlude

Rate this book
Commander Iskar Gar-Kurai isn't impressed by humans or their backwater planet. If he had his way, he'd be working closer to home, on a planet where it wasn't so infernally hot...

But orders are orders, especially when they come from the very top.

If he's going to be on Earth for the long term, Iskar needs to learn more about its strange inhabitants. That's why he's reluctantly agreed to hit the streets of Darkside. It's an observational visit, nothing more.

So why has this blue-haired temptress targeted him of all people, and what is he going to do about it?

Criminals must be punished, and Iskar has always done things by the book.

A Darkside Interlude is a novella set after the Dark Planet Warriors series. It can be read as a standalone, but it'll probably make more sense if you read the original series first.

Anna Carven's novella transition from the Dark Planet Warriors series to the Darkstar Mercenaries series is excellent. In 159 pages she introduces new main characters, a new mission / direction for the Kordolian aliens residing on Earth, some excellent fight scenes, and that now-trademark intimidation and stoicism that marks the scariest warrior predators in the galaxy. Toss in a little mating fever, and the situation is purely combustible.

This "interlude" introduces Iskar, the new director of security for Darkstar Mercenaries. He is different from the other Kordolians we have met because he is not First Division, and not invincible through the nanites that repair his cells. But he is still formidable, and Carven unleashes that attitude in all its glory.

"It was important for him to develop a good understanding of these humans and their culture. All the better to intimidate them with."

"Iskar didn’t believe in granting second chances. He didn’t believe in blurring the lines. He did things by the book, and sometimes, he wrote the book."

Well, Iskar breaks all of his own rules for pickpocket Mari, who is an undocumented person living in Darkside. Despite her desperate circumstances, she has her own honor code and a reason for thieving to survive. This time, she just picked the wrong - or should that be "right?" - mark. This is the story of their adventure, and it was delightfully satisfying from beginning to end.

I rarely give novellas this short such high praise, but this was such an effective transition, and so contained that I thought it hit all the right notes.

I have not gotten over my need for alien sci-fi rom crack and when I realized that Anna Carven continued with her Dark Planet Warriors 'verse with this spinoff series, I jumped back on that train tout suite.

In this installment, the focus is on one of the other KordoliannCommanders named Iskar. He's not part of the First Division, but he's just below Tarak commanding his men and adjusting to being assigned to interact with the humans on Earth.

When he goes to Darkside to check things out, he meets Mari, an Unregistered human who lives in the alleys where she has to survive by stealing from tourists to Darkside. When she steals a very sentimental and valuable medal from Iskar, it leads them on a chase through Darkside and along the way, they become fascinated with each other and yep, love happens.

I thought it was a decent setup for this new series, giving another view into the 'verse and allowing the reader to get familiar with and enjoy the continuing saga of Kordolian rebellion and integration into human society. The romance itself is sparse and not particularly deep, mostly because of the short page count. But if you enjoyed the OG Dark Planet Warrior series, I think you may like this.

I really loved this short tale of rich badass meets poor badass.

Mari lives in the ghettos of sin city. Like a future Las Vegas. She and all her neighbours are not citizens and to become a citizen is almost impossible. So she and her little brother are left to fend for themselves in a dog eat dog world. She survives by picking pockets despite the local mob boss taking 90% of her take.

She sees the Kordolians and mistakes them as rich self important idiots and tries to steal from Iskar and leads him on a merry chase.
Iskar is smitten right away but doesn't realize it till the next day.

More happens and keeps you on your toes, but it's an easy read. I love the way this author is so good at making alpha men fall so thoroughly for their mates without making them assholes or making them stupid.

There's a lovely cameo of the General in the epilogue that was just plain DELICIOUS!

Safety is good.

"Our very existence is a balancing act between order and chaos, Iskar. The trick is to indulge in a little of both, never letting one consume the other."

Well, well, well, this was a delightful return for me to this world of Kordolian's and a lovely, steamy start to a new series.

Short and sweet

It was short and sweet. I actually thought it was too insta-love on the females part. I get the mating heat of the Kordolian males, but for her to be ready to commit to him after a very brief meeting was just too over the top fast. I am usually ok with the instant attraction and even some feelings and I get it even better when some metaphysical hoodoo kicks in, but this was none of that. I just felt it should have been a little more developed.

It was a nice bridge between two series, or I should rather say a teaser about the upcoming series...
Although I didn't enjoyed it as much as I did the previous books (the sad fact is, sometimes the story and the writing can be good but if the main characters don't suit you, nothing can be done to make you love it), I can't wait to see what the new series brings.

Amazing

Anna Carven has made it to my autobuy list. Absolutely love all of her books and now the interlude shorts that she had been releasing. This interlude has a fully developed albeit short story, developed characters that I connected to, and whets my appetite for more more more on the Darkstar Mercenaries! I look forward to seeing Mari and Iskar again as the series comes out.

Adore this book!

Love the way I can tell, the same characters will be in the next series. But will keep the story moving. All I can say during this Thanksgiving week, is thank you for your hard work.

I LOVE Tarak and quite enjoyed the Dark Warriors series, so I was looking forward to this spin off. Even if Tarak was just a background character. Our great General is basically going to rule from the behind the scenes. This novella was a decent bridge between the two to set this series up.

Iskar isn't First Division, but he's fierce enough anyway. Tarak has appointed him in charge of the Earth base and he's going to do his job. It was interesting to learn his back story and find out how much he had changed over time. He is less than thrilled to be on Earth, but during an observational trip out to see the humans on New Year's eve, his life is about to change.

Mari has grown up on the streets of Darkside and because she isn't a citizen, she has to survive by less than legal means. But she does what she has to do in order to keep protecting her brother until she is finally able to get him out of that place. She is a thief by trade and thinks she's a damn good one. Until she marks Iskar as her target and it's one of the biggest mistakes of her life.

When Mari steals a very important pendant from him, Iskar chases her down with all the ease and determination of any Kordolian. That night turns out to be one of the most terrifying and exciting of Mari's life. And neither expect to see the other again. But when Iskar can't stop thinking about her, he realizes that she's his mate. Unfortunately, she's been sold as a sex slave and now it's up to him to find her and take her back. It's a rescue that Mari desperately wishes for even though she knows it's silly to hope for an alien stranger to save her.

I liked how this whole story went down. The only thing that bugged me was the fact that Mari agreed to be Iskar's mate after knowing he existed for less than 24 hours. Of which they probably only interacted for a handful of them. It was just too unbelievably fast for Mari to be saying yes to. Although, who's to say what I would do.

I just love the Kordolian attitude of how beneath them humans are and how they act in whatever way they please. These males are just so friggin hot and I can't wait to get more of them.

While I freely admit to being smitten with these Kordolian warriors, I'm BEYOND THRILLED to see how Tarak is using his "retirement" as he sets up the Darkstar Mercenaries and gives his men a new place to put their soldiering ways to the test. I love seeing the after in a happily ever after and Tarak might no longer be the cruel blade of the Empire, but he's not simply closing up shop and spending his days dottering around the homestead. But then, I never really expected he'd be the type to do that, so this makes sense.

But enough about Tarak. This is Iskar and Mari's story. Their first meeting doesn't go as Mari expects and suddenly she's got the eyes of a Kordolian commander on her. For a thief who needs to fly under the radar to do her thing effectively (and by that, I mean she needs to not catch the attention of anyone in authority. Her MO itself is to draw all sorts of attention to herself when she's picking her mark and luring them in with her drop-dead beauty.) this is a little problematic.

Until it's not.

Let's face it, having a Kordolian with possessive instincts and the ability to level ones enemies on your side is excellent when things go south.

And things do go south. Not that Mari can't take care of herself, but it's nice to have backup, right?

I'm looking forward to seeing where this new direction takes our surly heroes and the ladies who fall for them. There are A LOT of unmated Kordolians out there, so there's plenty of opportunity for craziness on every level.

2.25 Stars. (BW/ Silver Alien). Kindled Unlimited Edition 159 page novella e-book. Insta-love/lust. Vague world building and meta physics, underdeveloped characters and a storyline the jumps about leaving more questions than it answers. The story takes place on dystopian Earth in area that was once Australia. Many alien species visit Earth but Kordolians, a race of silver skinned, red eyed, white haired, large, strong, technically advanced beings, have entered into a contract where the Kordolians protect Earth for an area that is exclusively theirs. The hero, Iskar Gar-Kurai, is the High Commander of the Kordolian forces on earth. Is the virginal heroine, Maribel, 22 or a 27-year-old? Mari is a bronze skinned blue haired unregistered Darkside resident forced to steal and live in swallow in Dust Alley. Iskar and Mari meet and have an immediate physical attraction when Mari attempts to steal Iskar’s pendent. Mari tries to escape but Iskar chases and catches her and during this escapade, Iskar gets shot, heals himself with a miracle salve heals Mari's feet. How is Mari's 12-year-old brother able to find Iskar without ever having meet him and without knowing Iskar's name or Iskar’s title.? What is mating heat? Iskar kisses Mari but goes days before declaring her his mate and still does nothing until he is asked to rescue her.

This one was interesting as a set up for a second series based on the Dark Planet Warriors books. DPW are some of my favorite sci-fi/romance books because I love the characters and the world building. This book had an interesting storyline, but felt pretty formulaic for a romance novel. I wish there had been more romantic tension and development between the characters, it was a little difficult for me to feel for these characters anything like I felt for the original Kordolians. I have to mention, the biggest eye-roll moment for me was when the H/h have sex for the first time. Both of these characters are virgins and what should have been a sweet, nervous, possibly fumbling experience just played out like pornstar shower sex. I’m hoping the next one has some more feeling and emotional growth in it.

Meh

I have loved all of the books about the Kordolians. This book, however, had very little to it. Not much of a plot line and not much romance or love. Wham, Bam, it’s over ma’am. I felt no real connection to the characters. The female lead’s instant and unquestioning acceptance of everything was unbelievable. I am hoping that it’s an aberration as she sets up the new series.

Prequel to the book I'm reading now - didn't need it to understand the rest of the series, but it was a fun book and helped set the transition between the two series. The ultra-compressed timeline is a bit unbelievable if you stop to think about it, but it works when you're reading it. Still very glad to have discovered this author and more good SFR!

Not the best book in this universe, but good storyline. Some of the earlier books and later were better written in my opinion. I enjoyed this book a lot

**MINOR SPOILERS**
This book is part of a plethora of books, novellas, and at least two spin off series related to Dark Planet Warriors. I do not recommend it as a standalone. It is a prequel and fits between the last of the previous series, Dark Planet Warriors, and the first of the next series, DarkStar Mercenaries
At the conclusion of the previous series, an alien species called the Kordolians have just destroyed their corrupt empire. Some of them have now settled on earth, including Tarak, the general responsible for the change. He has now established a band of mercenaries who are featured in this series.
In this book, Iskar has been selected to be the Head of Security (publicly) or the Commander of Kordolian forces on Earth (privately). When he goes out with a fellow Kordolian, a human named Mari attempts to steal from him. He catches her at it, but she engages his mating fever. There could have been a little more relationship development between them. It was a novella, however, and a ‘coup de foudre’ struck them both.
The reason I rated this book one star is because Iskar is filled with lust for Mari and thinks several times things like this “The human aroused his lust… on this primitive backwater of a planet, who the hell was to stop him from doing as he pleased.” He does not act on these thoughts, but it was distasteful to read. Later, Tarak mentions that they could have created an involuntary breeding program but that it would have gone against their very nature which was to be protective. Given how Tarak was presented in prior books, I saw it as a statement of decency.
Mari is deeply in inherited debt and has been stealing to pay it. Just after she meets Iskar, the Collector to whom she owes the debt, decides to sell her as a sex slave. I thought it was interesting how Iskar punished the person who bought Mari.
Mari has spent her life caring for her younger brother. They are very loyal to each other. Mari hopes that he will have a better life by passing an exam that will open up opportunities for him.
The pace of the book is fast. The point of view alternates between Mari and Iskar.
I think it would be nice for the author to include a reference list in the books. Included could be the names of the different male and female main characters, planets mentioned, aliens mentioned, and maybe a few word translations (siv, etc) that the Kordolians use.
I am likely to go on and read the next book based on the previous books. However, if the thoughts reflected above continue to be a part of the series, I will discontinue reading them.

Darkside is the first book of the Darkstar Mercenaries from Anna Carven. This series is a spin off from out beloved DPW, yes is a new series but some of the characters from DPW, like our great General and others will make and appearance, and even if is brief they might spoil the enjoyment of the first couple of books if you have not read it them.
Regardless it will not take anything for this series.
Darkside was first described on DPW #4.5 (Zyara and Kianan story) which gives you an idea or the syndicate and Darkside politics.
As for this book, I loved Iskar, he is everything that a Kordolian mercenary should be (without being first division), and I understand that this is more of a introduction to the new series, but I wish that Ms. Carven would have spent more time developing the love story between Iskar and Mari, it was practically non existing, in my opinion. They barely knew each other, there was only one conversation/encounter between them before the mating. I’m all for instant love but this was ridiculous.

A human pickpocket named Mari picked the wrong pocket this time around. In her desperation to pay off a debt collector she has stolen an alien artifact that should fetch big money on the black market.
Iskar, High Commander of the Kordolian Mercenaries knows that the blue haired human has stolen the only thing he has left of his father's. And he needs to get it back. He's got her scent and won't lose her trail. He's got the mating fever. But the chase puts him in the middle of a criminal organization's machinations. Little do the humans know who they've decided to mess with.
Iskar learns that Mari's life is in danger of being no longer her own and the life of her younger brother would be doomed to poverty. Someone was going to pay.
This short story was worth the read. It showed the dark underbelly of the Earth city of Telluria and the neighborhood known as Darkside. The classic rescue scene was awesome and so satisfying.

Loved this Cinderella motif sci-fi romance!

This is the first book in a spin-off of the Kordolian stories, taking place on Earth. The Commander of Security troops on Earth goes out for New Years Eve to observe humans celebrating and a pickpocket tried to steal a valuable medal from him. He gives chase to this beautiful girl with blue hair and when he catches up to her he’s kind of smitten. She lives in the poorest slum with her younger brother and stealing is how she pays her inherited debts to a monster called The Collector. Her brother escapes and goes in search of the Commander, who goes in to rescue her from a man The Collector sold her to. Lots of action and romance. I look forward to next book!

These stories are Too Short !!!!!

ALWAYS a pleasure to step foot into this universe !! In this story
Commander Istar is surprisingly in the throes of his own mating fever . He is hanging out in Darkside with Mardak, A member of the 1st Division. A very sexy human female catches his eye. And the fun begins !!
Mari is a very, very good thief, and she has a quota to meet for the night . She spies to easy " marks " . But she doesn't know them like We do !!!!
Another great read of this fabulous series. The one thing that I can say I don't particularly like is that the Story ends FAR TOO SOON !!!!!
I Absolutely Adore this series and have read each book at least twice !!!

All books in the Dark Planet Warriors is worth reading.

I want to emphasize that all the books in the Dark Planet Warriors and the Darkstar Mercenaries series are excellent reads. I have yet to come across a single book that I did not enjoy, which is quite rare. If you're thinking about reading these books, I strongly recommend starting with Dark Planet Warriors and reading them in chronological order instead of the order of publication. These books alone justify my Kindle Unlimited subscription which incidently I love. In fact, I've discovered many outstanding writers through my Kindle Unlimited membership.

Great Quick Read!!!

I absolutely love the Dark Planet series, so I was really excited to see a spinoff series. The same action, romance and sexy silver skinned Kordolians are included. But we get to see a side of Earth that was never revealed in the previous stories. Darkside is the seedy underbelly of Earth where all the criminals and those struggling to survive call home. The Heroine, Mari lives in Darkside and uses her exceptional skills as a thief to survive. Unfortunately her next easy target turns out to be Kordolian Commander Isktar.

To catch a thief

Iskar the Kordolian warrior gets more than he bargained for when he intercepts Mari the human pick-pocket on New Years Eve. She mistakes him for a tourist and steals something he truly values. He gives chase. She can’t shake him, and their initial adversarial confrontation begins what turns out to be the love of their lives. Tricks, traps, crime bosses and Kordolian bossiness provide the obstacle course they must navigate on the way to HEA. It’s a good start to Anna Carven’s Dark Star Mercenaries series. I’m eager for more.

Mari and Iskar

As the new Commander of the Kordolian on Earth Iskar is walking to see the people and places under his command when a beautiful woman approaches him and kisses him. And steals his father’s metal that Iskar always Carrie’s. He chases her down to her hovel and get his metal back.
Afterwards this chance encounter, he can’t get Mari out of his mind.

This is how they met. A very short story begins a new series with the Kordolian military. Although not First Division they still are extremely skilled military.
