Pompeii was originally founded by the Oscans upon abed of lava at the southern part of Vesuvius, and on the banks of the river Sarno (then navigable), in the sixth century before the Christian era, although some early writers say that it is obviously desirable to know exactly the origin of this very ancient city of Campania.
After the war with the Samnites it passed under the domination of the Romans, Who made a pleasure resort of it.
In the year 63. A. D. The city was destroyed by an earthquake.
