Trapped in a medical facility in Blacksburg while desperately searching for supplies for Jason, Dianne must find a way to get out before the men who have been following her manage to find and stop her. Meanwhile, in Washington, Rick and his companions slowly work their way through the city, all facing the threat of new foes and the arrival of strange allies.
Surviving the Fall is a thrilling post-apocalyptic episodic series that focuses on Rick and Dianne Waters and how they each deal with the apocalypse. Stranded across the country away from his family, Rick must travel from California to Virginia to reunite with his wife and children, all while struggling to comprehend and deal with the horrors along the way.
At home with her three children when she experiences the beginning of the end in a dramatic and deadly fashion, Dianne Waters has experience as a prepper and survivalist, but not even years of training and preparation have readied her for the darkness that comes with the end of the world. Now she must draw upon those skills to protect her loved ones and fight back against those who come against her and her family.
Surviving the Fall will feature 14 episodic (25k-30k words in length) books that are full of action, suspense and drama as Rick and Dianne struggle to survive the end of days. Episodes will be published every 2-3 weeks.
Of the series, The Tipping Point was the best so far of the Surviving the Fall apocalyptic series by Mike Kraus, in my estimation. Diane is a legitimate bad ass with a reservoir of courage so profound that I would have to say appears to be one of the most realistic portrayals I have ever read of a female character / mother. She is trapped in a medical facility in Blacksburg while looking for medical supplies by a group that’s out for her blood. Rick's story is getting more intriguing, but still waiting for him to get home, and even more so now when things are getting scarier, hairier, more dangerous. The parallel stories are great because the safety valve on the tension occasionally gets turned on to release some, not all of the tension, as we contemplate another layer of the Surviving the Fall series. Kraus has made things really stressful, and they become more so as the reader gets more invested in the characters.
This installment in the series improved over the last couple. Finally, the main characters are doing something to advance the plot rather than just having random adventures.
For some reason, I was extra critical when it came to this installment. I just want to preface this by saying that this series as a whole is super fun and interesting, but is not the best thing out there (by far). There are many issues with the writing, characters, plot, etc. but that doesn't deter me from liking this series as a whole. Saying that I can move on to the things that bothered me throughout book 9.
Okay, let's start with the writing, mostly dialogue. This is something I picked up on from the first or second volume and it's been bothering me for the past 8 books. The characters don't sound real/normal/natural; they speak in these full, eloquent statements that are so well thought out and planned. Like wtf?!?! I thought you were running away from someone that's trying to kill you, how did you make a 1467 step plan to get away?
Kraus also makes his characters mumble, grunt, groan, murmur, snort, etc. They're fine when used sparingly, but I got annoyed when every time (and I mean almost every fucking time) Dianne addresses the kids they reply with a course of groans and mumbled words. LIKE STFU AND JUST MAKE YOUR CHARACTERS SPEAK!
Moving on to one of the most useless characters in this series: Jane. I never really liked her. I thought she was useless and whiney and just slowed everyone down, and that's pretty much what she does. I never really understood her insertion until Ir realized she's just a tool to infodump shit on the reader. She asks questions that we would ask and gets them answered. Basically, a way for Kraus to tell not show and just dump a load of information without really having to work and show the backstory. She's also meant to be comic relief, but her jokes never really land for me...
The Tipping Point is the ninth book in the Surviving the Fall series. This could be read as a standalone but should not be. It will make more sense if you have read the earlier books plus it has a cliffhanger ending. There is violence, it is an apocalyptic thriller, so it might not be suitable for more sensitive readers.
The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat all of that info here. This is an apocalyptic thriller filled with people trying to survive in a country and world gone crazy. This story includes a lot of twists and turns. As usual, everything is not as it seems. I look forward to reading more of this series. Each of these books are short but definitely worth reading.
Diane is in extreme danger when she tries to get medicine for her friend. She is trapped in a seniors care centre with twelve gunmen after her. Meanwhile Rick and his traveling companions are still travelling toward their goal of finding the key to shutting down the virus.
This is the ninth volume in the survivalist post apocalyptic series, Surviving the Fall. The characters continue to evolve and grow in their survival skills. I enjoy the way they keep their friends close and the dialogue between them. The storyline flows quickly and smoothly filled with great action scenes and emotional drama that keeps you engaged right to the end, leaving you wanting more. As each book builds on the next, I suggest for the best reading experience that you read the books in order.
"The grand prize being life itself." In which Diane has to fight to get the drugs needed to save a life, whilst not too many miles away in Washington DC,, husband Rick with Jane and Dr.Evans are still trying to find where, and how, to shut down Damacles. In space, Colonel Palmer and how two person crew will soon run out of oxygen if they cannot somehow get into the now deserted Space Station and get things working there.
This is an original and believable series, well worth reading. Just a pity that each episode is not longer.
I have the box set of this series, meaning I can go straight to the next episode, which is great because the rising tension is palpable.
Rick and Dianne are both racing against time and yet it seems that it's low-life humans are the worst enemy - despite a computer programme wanting to destroy everything (caused by other villainous humans).
The story has those annoying grammatical errors, however, it's still entertaining.
Book 9 in the series really is a game changer. Dianne finds out if she has what it takes to survive. Rick is nearing their destination to hopefully stop Damocles. The space station addition is a little strange but it will tie in later somewhere. Five more books to read!
I still think these are too short and makes the story rather disjointed over all, but this was a very good addition to the series, nonetheless. A lot of action and plot progress for both Rick and Diane.
Dianne shows her inner 'Rambo' as she gets herself out of a bad situation while scavenging for medicine. Meanwhile, her husband Rick is still trying to make it to where the computer virus originates, fighting his way through areas thick with bad guys.
So, I am finally up to date on this series so far. and omg I need more. march just seems so far away lol this series is really good and this book was just so much more. I like how these books are done, month by month. and I like we get the preface at the start of each one. I can't wait for book 10.
I have truly enjoyed reading the Surviving the Fall series. I anxiously await the release of each new episode because I NEED to know what happens next with the characters. This episode was engaging and active.
I find myself reading the books faster and faster as the excitement and anticipation builds with each story line. Characters and storylines are well developed and one does not get lost in-between storylines as they are all interesting.
This series is amazing! The characters are believable and the storyline is also believable. I may really start prepping full time. Start at book one. It’s an incredible ride.
I love this series. We can second guess every character's action but I'm not sure what decision is right. It's a strange paradigm they are in. Lots of action in these books. You keep guessing where the next turn will take you. Heading to the next one.
This book was great and very exciting and interesting to read it. I think that Rick needs to get home since he is so close. His family needs to know he is alright.
it's a decent read but i feel a bit ripped off.i know it's pretty cheap but if you're expecting a book it's more like a short read to be consumed in 1 or 2 sittings.i'd much rather wait longer for it and get an actual book.
I need the rest of the story. I'm realizing I don't like what I consider a chapter a month.
I'm a fast reader and really enjoy a good book. This is a good book and I can't wait to see how it all comes out. Rick is great, Dianne is fantastic, she is beyond brave. I think a mother trying to protect and provide for her children finds courage and depth beyond even she can imagine. Rick is perhaps getting closer to Damocles and turning it off while there is still a possibility of saving some part of the world and it's people
Dianne is trapped in a medical building trying to get supplies for her injured neighbor. She does make it home but the men are after her and have found her.
