‘The most important new technology since the creation of the internet’

Chicago author/entrepreneur Neil Hoffman has made a fortune trading bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. An ex-army, an online entrepreneur and a self-taught computer programmer, he loves trading cryptocurrencies and forex and he sees it as having a huge potential to make some serious income. In this book he shares his insights into another leading edge technology – BLOCKCHAIN – a book equally as informative and condensed as Neil’s initial book.

For many of us the concept of Blockchain is foreign and understanding that paucity of background information Neil offers the history of this technology: ‘A blockchain is a type of decentralized database that works as a type of ledger for financial transactions. Due to the way it is secured, it is both easy for authorized users to access and very difficult for unauthorized users to access, for reasons that will be explained in detail in the later chapters. As the name implies, a blockchain is made up of individual blocks that each contains unique transaction information as well as information relating to his or her unique place in the chain. Every time a new block is added to a blockchain from an authorized node, that information is then shared with all the other nodes that make up the network after it has been verified. No centralized authority needs to tell the nodes to seek new information. When it comes to security, the blockchain does not take any offensive measures against threats and instead relies on extreme defense to win the day. As transactions need to be verified before they are added to the primary blockchain, any malicious blocks that may be sent will be automatically picked up and discarded before they can infect the whole blockchain. Only when all of its data lines up with at least 51 percent of all other nodes, a new block will be added to the blockchain. While, technically, it is possible to generate enough fabricated cloud to add a fake block to a chain, the resources required to do so are beyond the means of modern hackers and the costs for doing so would outstrip the gains. In addition to storing information, the blockchain automatically timestamps the data which means it is extremely easy to determine when a given transaction took place after the fact. When all of its facets are taken together, it becomes easy to see why blockchains can essentially act autonomously with new blocks being created and assigned, and the whole being policed for errors, without anyone actively stepping in and taking control over any of it.

This is the type of language that Neil uses throughout this book – accessible explanations that genuinely teach rather than simply define. In this tone he shares the history of the development of Blockchain, defines and explains how the Blockchain technology works, how it is used in business/media/marketing/property, and securing sensitive data storage. Being the cautious entrepreneur Neil informs us of the pros and cons, the linked aspects of cryptocurrency and blockchain, how to use it, and most important – how to understand it and incorporate it into our thoughts for future use. Full of predictions about how this new technology will affect us, ties book shines a bright light on an unknown arena of thought and technology.

Granted the book becomes more complex as the pages turn (as well a guide should!) but stay with Neil and get to understand this inevitable change that is on its way. ‘As blockchain is still such a new technology, there is no telling when new potentially game-changing information is going to emerge which means keeping your ear to the ground is the only way to actually ensure that you are not caught off guard.’ This is a near definitive introduction to a concept we all must learn. And Neil Hoffman is an exemplary guide!

This is a basic introduction to new technology used for bitcoin and other electron financial transactions in a system labelled Blockchain. Chapters cover system elements, uses, security, government regulations, and applications. Hoffman recognizes that the system has good and bad points, but that the technology may be used to create the next big change to online transactions.

I received this book through a promotional giveaway. Although encouraged, I was under no obligation to write a review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Unless you have an IT background its quite incomprehensible. Maybe even if you have an IT background? As well as wanting to get some education on Blockchain, I mainly bought the book to find out about investing and trading in cryptocurrencies and it was no help at all. I still have no real idea of blockchain and it didn't cover investing. Very false advertising to say its blockchain for dummies. .

Good

Easy to understand, useful information
However the book seems exaggerated the positive side of the usage of cryptocurrencies
Anyway, good book to read
