Tarot for Fiction Writers is the first book in the Writersaurus Guides series designed to help writers improve their craft, find readers, and achieve publishing success.
I would like to first state that my review reflects the opinions of an experienced Tarot reader and not a writer. Although I enjoy learning about writing, I only write for myself as a hobby. With that said, the Tarot is a very helpful tool for creatives of all types and you do not need to thoroughly learn the Tarot in order to take advantage of it as a creative tool. I believe this book can help someone who has never worked with the Tarot before and would like to use it for writing. There are a number of other Tarot books and resources available for writers, but for someone very new to either writing or Tarot (or both) this book could be very informative and well worth reading. The writer uses examples from well known pop culture works, such as the Harry Potter series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the Hunger Games, among others. What I found most interesting and helpful were the writer's card meaning interpretations, although influenced by traditional meanings the writer offered meanings that would be particularly useful for writers looking to develop characters, plots, and so on. My only issue is that I did not find the examples from the writer's own works as helpful as I had not read her other books, so I did notice myself sort of just skimming over the writer's personal examples, which is the primary reason I have chosen to rate 4-stars instead of 5.
The only reason I give this book a 4 star instead of 5 is actually something that's not really the author's fault. To really make good use of this book, you need to spend some time learning the meaning of the tarot cards, which takes a bit of time. Mind you, that doesn't mean you can't use this book (not at all)...all you have to do is look up the cards' meanings with the book that came with your cards. As far of the book itself, I'd never used tarot before (for anything) and this was a great intro book with a variety of spreads and also sections that tie writer "craft" into the spreads. Great book for writers, new or experienced.
