Note to the reader: This is a sweet romance with no cliffhangers and can be read as a standalone. While it is clean, it is not inspirational--although it may inspire you to laugh out loud as it does have some humor triggers. It also contains a cute rescue dog of questionable heritage, undergarments serving double duty as handbags, and a certain number of requisite heartwarming moments. Warning: This series can be addictive if you like to laugh and cry while reading.

Initial thoughts:
As the story progressed more and more, the more and more I didn’t like Todd. I just thought he was being too casual with their relationship. It felt like to him it was just throw away type of situation with Nicola with benefits. He kept portraying this way too carefree. Then combine the fact that he kept disappearing on his work trips and not spending time with Nicola, acting like it wasn’t a big deal at all. It made me feel like she didn’t matter to him at all, even indicating to her multiple times he liked being free and single while engaging in this friends with benefits situation. He never said anything more. He just kept running off and never said once he was willing to settle in Blueberry Springs. So, what was Nicola supposed to think? I felt what she felt about Todd. There were no clues there. Then have it turned back around on her just didn’t sit well with me. Did she contribute with her insecurities? Yes, but the way Todd was running off like he did I could see where she was coming from. I didn’t see Todd quite in it for the long haul until after the pregnancy reveal. It was like he did a 360 after that. I didn’t see it. I think he should have made the grand gesture not her. He just never indicated he was that serious about their relationship until the end. He would cringe whenever she mention it. I just didn’t care for him. I liked Devon a lot better than Todd.
Review:
I was immediately excited about this story featuring my favorite tropes of unrequited love and friends to lovers. Plus there was the whole rejection of kiss that Todd and Nicola shared months earlier, and I knew this was going to be right up my alley.
It started off really great. I loved the whole small town vibes and friends groups especially Devon as they tried to play a little bit of matchmaker between Nicola and Todd, knowing they were made for one another and deeply in love with each other. They knew that Nicola was mourning the loss of the friendship/relationship with Todd after his rejection of their kiss. They tried to nudge her in Todd’s direction especially when her work asked her to plan these social/date nights for singles in order to persuade young singles to come live in their town. This was the perfect opportunity for Todd and Nicola to reunite.
I loved the whole plot line with the date nights around the town. It brought Todd and Nicola back together again, but it also showed the connection and chemistry they had with one another. I loved the whole flirty/banter between them. I loved how Todd kept teasing her along the way during those date nights. He seemed to want to explore the physical chemistry between them even though Nicola didn’t quite believe it and made up excuses I loved how the acted couple like because they had a great foundation with their friendship of years and years. They had intimacy and closeness between them. I really loved that. It made me excited as the explored this side of their relationship via these date nights with some great romantic moments and wooing happening for the rest of the book. I was craving.
However that changed once it introduced one of my least favorite trope, which was the friends with benefits trope. Yes, they did more than that, but to me personally it didn’t feel like Todd was all in. He just wanted to explore the physical side of their relationship and nothing more. he was content by it. He was happy with the situation as they engaged in bedroom activities. He even cringed when suggesting she wanted more. He kept disappearing on her like she was nothing but footnote in his life, which didn’t feel right. Did I think he loved her but never acknowledged it? Yes, but he never showed it and later on when he explained about this motivations and his feelings he made it seem like he knew she was the one and that was it. But he didn’t act like it in my opinion especially when he kept disappearing on her when he should known that him not spending her birthday with her was big deal. I don’t care what she said to the contrary if Todd claimed she was important to him as he indicated he should have known better. He tried justify it by saying that he offered not to go or her to come with him, but didn’t argue to hard about it. He just brushed it off like it was nothing nor was important to him. I didn’t not like that at all. It made me feel like this relationship to him was not that important. Yes, Nicola didn’t do everything either, but some of the things he did counteracted what he said he felt about her. It made him really not like him especially when kept announcing he was going away for work and not explaining to her the reasons he was doing it or emphasizing the importance she was to him. It just rubbed me the wrong way.
Another complaint that I had was that this story was a sweet romance. Usually I’m not a fan of that because there’s not a lot of action on the page, but since this was a friends to lovers I decided to go for it anyway. I was prepared for it be less action and more about the building of the romance, and I was okay. Then even though there wasn’t heated action on the page, there were very heated and sexualized moments that I was expecting. For example, whenever Nicola saw Todd she would indicate how much she wanted him and the various things that she would like to do to him in bed. I didn’t think that would have been in a sweet romance, but I was okay with it. Then came the whole friends with benefits thing, that was when it just threw the whole thing off for me. Yes, the only action shown were the heated kiss and nothing more, but they did participate in a lot of bedroom activity apparently and discuss just physical thing between them. That was definitely not what I was expecting especially being a sweet romance. I would have preferred that there wouldn’t have been anything but kissing between them in this romance and have a little bit more romance building and wooing going on with either romantic dates or just times that they spent together, which would have been consider romantically especially since this was a sweet romance, but instead it brought stuff into it. I wish it hadn’t because it made me want to see those love scenes especially after all the build up that was happening between Nicola and Todd for years. I wanted to see that through Nicola’s eyes as she was experiencing touch for touch or kiss for kiss and joining to joining, but since it was a sweet romance it wasn’t shown that made me annoyed even though I knew what I was getting into going in. I just none of the intimate acts were introduced or even done, though I do know why they were in there.
This brought in my least favorite trope in romance, which was a surprise pregnancy. I knew was heading there with the hints, but I was hoping it wasn’t go there. I nearly groaned when it was confirmed that Nicola was pregnant especially with Todd saying multiple times that he didn’t want commitment or a family. He made no inclination that he was willing to stick around and have a relationship with Nicola. He was just a wait and see thing for him. So, when the whole surprise pregnancy came on the page and was going to problem between them. I didn’t like this in here for so many reasons but mainly because I wanted Todd to come to realization himself that wanted everything with Nicola himself without this little push of the pregnancy. Once that was done, there was no going back. It more meaningful if he had big revelation and presented a big grand gesture to show her how much she meant to him and he wanted the world with her, instead of it already being there.
But the thing that I got me more (I indicated this in my long winded initial thoughts above) was the fact that Nicola had to do the grand gesture and not him. Yes, she had a lot of insecurities that she repeatedly played in her own head, which got to be a little much after awhile, and that caused her to act a certain way with Todd, but Todd never gave an indication that he wanted things to change between them aside from them sleeping tougher. There was never even a hint. He did the same thing in his relationship that he did with her before. He never romanced her. He never wooed her. He never gave her a really meaningful gift to show his intentions, instead he disappeared for weeks at a time making Nicola’s head spin. It was very callous at some points. Yes, Devon indicated that she pushed Todd away due to her insecurities, but not as much as Todd pushed her away I think. He was running scared too. To call her out on them and excuse Todd for his actions just didn’t seem right to me. I thought he was in a lot more of the wrong than she was because Todd never showed he wanted to get more serious with her. The communication was bad between them on both sides, but especially on Todd’s. He could have corrected her whenever she said something about how he would always was carefree and single and never would settle anything serious. He could have indicated that things changed in his attitude, but he didn’t. Even knowing that she wanted to stay in Blueberry Springs and not travel like they used, he never said word even got upset when she didn’t want to live the “adventurous” style anymore. So, what the heck was Nicola suppose to do? She was in a no win situation with him. I didn’t like that Todd’s behavior was excused while Nicola’s was berated. I didn’t think that was fair at all. It just another thing that turned me off.
I know this review seems very nit picky, but from the story that I thought I was getting to the story I actually got was very different from what I was expecting. The beginning was so promising and I was so loving it that I thought this was heading into five star territory, but it shifted as soon as the friends with benefits thing came into play then I knew that I wasn’t going to love this as much as I thought. Once the surprise pregnancy came into the picture, it just made know that this was not the direction that I was expecting or wanting. I wanted a lot more romance. I wanted a lot more wooing. I wanted to see Todd and Nicola go on these date nights and get deeper and deeper with one another as they fell madly in love even more than they were in the beginning. I wanted more flirty and teasing banter that was adorable in the beginning of the story. I wanted more special moments outside the bedroom. More sweetness, which this being a sweet romance that it would follow those parameters. It just felt like a lot about insecurities and miss communication between them than anything else. Usually thrive on that in romance, but here it too much because of how causal Todd was playing it off. I just didn’t think he was into it at all aside from the physical. His commitment wasn’t there for me. How justified some of the things he did just didn’t work for me. He showed that Nicola wasn’t the priority for him especially when he took a trip on her birthday. How did he even think that was going to go over? Yes, he asked about it and she did lie, but he should have known better. I’m sorry. I didn’t care for him or his actions for a majority of the book. Overall I did enjoy reading it, but I have read better friends to lovers story in my lifetime. I was just really disappointed with the direction it went as well as the hero especially after such a promising start.

Vodka and Candy Drops (Blueberry Springs book 6) by Jean Oram is a great read. I loved Nicola and Todd's story. This story has romance, humor, friends to lovers, close community, interesting and entertaining characters and more. Highly recommend to all fans of romance. I can't wait to see what happens next in Blueberry Springs!
The MCs' love was simply not convincing. There wasn't enough shown. Instead readers got a lot of push/pull and pep talks/lectures from meddlesome "friends." Also, it's very clear this is a later book in a series because it was cluttered with characters.
This book starts off with every second word being “Todd” and the character hasn’t even appeared yet. I can also see this is going to be a frustrating read that drags out longer than it should because the main characters fail to have a proper conversation. I don’t have time for that. DNF
This was an ok read for me. This is a best friends to lovers storyline and the plot was fairly predictable. It is told from Nicola’s point of view for the whole story. The characters were likable, but completely frustrating! I spent the majority of the book aggravated at Todd and Nicola because they didn’t communicate. Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️.
I love Jean's stories and this one is another winner! Nicola and Todd have been avoiding each other since a Valentine's Day kiss. Neither knows quite how to get their friendship back on track, and neither wants to let it go. Watching them step and mis-step toward their future is a lot of fun! A fantastic read!!
I just finished "Tequila & Candy Drops" and loved it - the ending was perfect!! Am looking forward to Book 7 about Devon! And I also look forward to reading "The Summer Sisters" series! Keep on writing, Jean!!
An okay read. I didn’t like that the book began with a lot of her male friend, Devon, and he wasn’t even the one she was in love with despite all his flirting with her. It would have made more sense to show the scene where she kissed her best friend, Todd, at the Valentines Party and then show some of the fallout of that. But they skipped showing the kiss scene and instead just brought it up in conversation and her thoughts of what had happened in the past. It also made no sense that she hadn’t known he was dating someone when they were supposed to be such best friends that they talked to each other all the time, hung out all the time yet she knew nothing of his somewhat serious relationship with this other girl (which we don’t find out later that’s why he didn’t talk to her for a while after the kiss as he was trying to keep his relationship with the other girl together). Overall, okay but not great.

Another wonderful book about a couple in Blueberry .
Love this best friends to lovers story. They have had the adventures but once the first kiss, things change but not for the good. Todd and Nicola are so fun together but they don't realize the love until it has to be pointed out. The town is so much fun during this book. Love all the ups and downs that they have. Love Devon also. He is so fun with Nicola but knows nothing will happen. Love the adventures to Mongolia and the final ending.
This best friends romance is free this week only (now through July 29th, 2021)! An indulgent pick-me-up just for you!
While this is book 6, you can read it as a standalone. And if you want more after you finish Todd and Nicola's emotional read, there are more books in the series to dive into!
Personally, I adore best friends romances--both writing them and reading them. In part, I think because some of my best relationships have come out of friendships. There's nothing better than being in love with your best friend. What do you think?
I really enjoyed this story by Jean Oram, as I usually do. The world of Blueberry Springs seems fun and so perfectly small town that I found myself smiling the whole time. I thought Devon was a pretty awesome friend and the aunts were a hoot. Todd and Nicola were good together but I just didn't like her at all. I thought she heaped too many expectations onto Todd without talking about it. He did it too, but he didn't seem to get angry at her for not intuiting his wants/needs/desires. They had a wonderful journey and as a wanderer myself, I loved to see how their love grew out in the world.
This book was so angsty. They have a strange relationship. I didn’t really feel like they had chemistry. I felt like it was one-sided. And then the excuse she gave or he gave didn’t feel like it fit the storyline. Also the style of writing I just did not like. There’s a lot of time lapses and confusing missing details. The book is in a happy ending but it’s really hard won.
The first 2/3 of the book I was thinking Todd has never grown up, held a job and he compared himself to Peter Pan. Then Devon knocks some sense into Nicola's head on man speak and poof!
Definitely recommend the book. A roller coaster ride for two thrill junkies.
Nicola and Todd are best friends and have been for years. A surprise kiss from Nicola sends both of them running in opposite directions. Nicola wants her best friend back, and so does Todd. Can they get over that kiss and continue their friendship? Time will tell, and time can bring many changes. It's a lovely story. The last chapter had me in tears. Beautiful. I loved it.
This was boring. It took a while for the mmc to show up, and once he did, I failed to detect any chemistry between the two. Fmc wasn’t very likeable so I really didn’t care what happened with the very predictable plot point. Only finished reading because I’d put so much time in and didn’t want to Dnf.
it is the story of Todd and Nicola. They have know each other forever (from grade school) and gave a strong friendship. They both love each other but worry about damaging their friendship. Love wins.
Great book. Loved the plot & characters. If only we could all get out of our own way. Read it at one sitting, now looking for the rest of the books. You feel like you were right there with the Whole town.
I read the first 15% of this and put it down. I found the heroine to be crude and her friends intrusive and without appropriate interpersonal boundaries. I think it is distasteful to older readers and a bad example to young ones.
Such a complicated relationship, it sucked the joy out of the book. I wanted to like it but the first half of the story left me confused on whether I was supposed to be rooting for the main guy. I do appreciate it not being full of bad language.
This book is part of the Blueberry Springs series, but can be read as a standalone. It's a nice romance where best friends turn to lovers. Although it's a bit strange that both don't realise they've already loved each other for years it's a really good read.
A sweet small town romance where two best friends realise that they are meant to spend the rest of their lives together. Throw in a surprise pregnancy and a lot of miscommunication and you get a story with great characters and lots of emotions. Blueberry Springs is a very special town.
Jumping to conclusions and thinking you know whats best for the person you love can lead to some great heartache. Todd and Nicola have known eachother since grade 7, they went to collage together and then backpacking for 2 years. When Nicola takes a job in Blueberry Springs as event coordinator. The 2 do start dating, but Nicola does not trust she is enough for Todd and her insecurities push him away. Can an unplanned pregnancy help or hinder these two???
Just your average, run-of-the-mill rom-com story. Good thing is that I love those kinds of stories; so this is just what the doctor ordered! A++ from me!
I love this adventurous couple. They did it right... Have your great adventure FIRST, then see where life takes you. I think we all need a friend like Devin.
