Greg and Trixie Bowman are having a bad day. The dashboard in their car is dissolving… their clothes are shredding… they can't see through their eyeglasses.
With the grim realization that their lives have changed forever, the Bowmans do whatever it takes to keep their family safe in a world that is suddenly without plastics or other synthetic compounds. And the plastic just doesn't disappear - it changes into something deadly and terrifying.
A dystopian post-apocalyptic world in which all plastics spontaneously dissolve is an intriguing and terrifying concept. Unfortunately the book was badly written, contained lots of spelling errors and a few niggly issues.
Wildly imaginative, terrifying, the end of our world as you know it.
Take a look around you and pay attention to everything you see that has any parts made of plastic, then imagine those items breaking down ... no longer working, no longer useful, everything plastic gasifying and gone forever. Then think about how much of our food and drinks are packaged in plastic, how much we would lose, and how little would be left to sustain us.
*** I poked the rear bumper with my index finger and was amazed at how far it sunk into the material. It was as if the plastic was melting, yet it wasn’t hot at all. “Trix,” I said. “This is not good." Just then Trix looked up at me. “The phone just went dead.” Then the power went out. ***
There are some pretty dark moments in this story, with people in desperate situations ... and with some who are just monsters. If you're sensitive to animals there is a difficult spot to get through, though thankfully it is short.
*** “I really can’t get my mind around it,” I replied. “Take away power and synthetic fabrics and the whole world goes to shit. Thousands of years of advancing civilization, and 95% of the population is gone in just a few weeks.” ***
Then the realization comes that there are disruptions in the atmosphere due to all the gas, quickly finding out they have to deal with out of season and severe weather conditions, including dangerous and deadly storms. This is the situation married couple Greg and Trixie find themselves in, along with being desperately worried about their daughter and two very young grandchildren in a town forty miles away, with no easy way to contact them or travel there.
I love dystopian and post apocalyptic stories and have read many. This one is going into my favorites folder as it kept me engaged all the way through and has a unique storyline in its genre. I definitely recommend.
Although there is a satisfactory ending, there is also an opening for a book two which I can't wait to read!
Can you imagine living in a world where suddenly all the plastic, anything made with any chemical component kin to plastic, starting dissolving and turning into methane gas? Now people would have to use products made from cotton, wood,, glass, aluminum, steel, leather, paper and any other product that did not contain any plastic. While this process was happening, people were being caught
A great deal of thinking by the achievement into realizing the consequences of all forms of plastic going away at once. We never learn the scope of the event and the entire story takes place in Michigan but weather, lack of food, water and bad people make for a riveting story that I enjoyed reading.
"Plastipocalypse" is a fictional page-turner about what would happen if all the plastic in the world melted. How would mankind (or man un-kind) survive? I really liked it a lot! I know the author and I especially enjoyed Doug's inclusion of my hometown and many familiar Michigan references.
