But she does know one thing. She'll be the one making the decisions in her world from here on out. One of those decisions is to let James Lawless in.

He wasn't ever supposed to come back alive. Not while so many others suffered because of his failures. His teammates, his sister, the woman who saved him when no one else could. When pieces from his past begin to come back to him, he knows he'll fail again. And this time, the woman he's falling in love with will pay the price for his shortcomings.

This was a good read and I enjoyed it from the characters to the excitement. Before you really get into the danger, adventure and thrills you are about three fourths the ways through it. From this author I am used to it starting from the first page grabbing your attention. This is not to say it was a bad read at all because it was a good. The author brings back characters from the past, it was great to meet Laura brother who we know from the past book he was in the military and kept as a prisoner for many years leaving her to believe by her dead husband that her brother was dead. This is a standalone read the author does fill in the information that you do not have to read the past books but really you should to get the full impact. It is a story of a lot of pain not only for Presley but for James as well. Presley’s parents expect so much from her, making lots of demands. She really hasn’t had much of a childhood or adulthood. Her life has been wrapped around Grand Prix circuit with her parents controlling her life. She is at the age she has missed so much and doesn’t want to miss anymore. James is having flash backs of when he was held prisoner. He knows he is missing something important and needs to remember, as he does he finds out his life is in danger along with Presley.

As always with Ms. Ryan her plots are good, her characters are great with a story that is very believable. She gives true emotions that really pulls you in. You can feel every painful step James takes along with his anger, needs and wants. He is afraid to love again he lost so much the last time plus who would want half a man who goes nuts from time to time. I loved his dog he really stole my heart in so many ways. I had no trouble feeling and picturing as he helps James get through the good and bad times. Presley’s mother is something else and gets into a mess. We know how that affects Presley but do not learn of the outcome. The passion is hot, the love scenes steam along with some very close calls with danger that could lead to death. I would have like for the story to have a little more excitement of danger before it does but the rest of the story was outstanding. 3.5 taking it up to a 4.

Lori Ryan’s stories keep getting better and better with each one she writes. Her latest one, Cherish and Protect, will be at the top of the list of my favorites by this author. The story hooked me from page one and I didn’t stop until I got to The End. I loved taking a trip back to Evers, Texas and catch up with old friends from previous books, finding out what all the favorite characters are up to these days. In this story we get to meet James Lawless and his story will break you heart. Some really bad men held him captive for years and he is so broken that he doesn’t think he will ever be whole again. He is living in a barn loft on his sister and brother-in-law’s property, keeping to himself only with the company of his service dog, Lulu.

Presley Royale has had her entire life mapped out for her by her parents and she is definitely ready for a change but isn’t quite sure how to go about making that happen without causing a major upset with her parents. After being injured on her horse, James’ brother-in-law, Cade, asked if James would exercise Presley’s horse until she is better. This begins a hesitant friendship between Presley and James. Once they become closer, Presley is able to touch just a part of James that needs her so very much. When the bad guys from James’ past comes after them, things get pretty scary.

I connected with James and Presley very quickly, loved their strength, how they bonded, how Presley seemed to know exactly what James needed from her to help him when he needed it. She was perfect for him. He also got her, understood her and supported her beautifully. The plot line was fantastic! As I read this story my emotions were all over the place, my heart hurt for what James had gone through and the after effects from all that he was suffering, the excitement for the growing relationship between the H&H and the nail biting as the bad guys showed up! Absolutely a top of the list favorite book! Loved it!

Cherish and Protect

This was an amazing addition to the Evers series and picks up right where the last book left off with them bringing James home alive but mentally broken. They fixed up the barn as an apartment for him knowing he had a long way to go before he would able to deal with many people except for Laura, his sister, Jamie her daughter and Cade, Laura's husband. He started watching a girl ride her horse and doing jumps was mesmerizing and soothing to him. Presley was this girl and little did he know that she would help him heal and give him a reason to want to live again. This story was suspenseful and romantic as James memorary started to return and people did not want that to happen and tried to kill him and Presley which kicked his military training back in to save their lives. Working together with his friend Hunter they took out the South American guerrilla leader Silva and Capt. Grey who had been selling him guns illegally for years. The love of James gave Presley the courage to retire from professional horse jumping and open the flower shop she always wanted to do. They were unstoppable together and James was working on being whole again because of the love he had for her. It was amazing to read James and Presley getting their happily ever after. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series and I highly recommend this book as well.

I purchased a copy of the full length steamy romantic suspense novel Cherish and Protect: A Small Town, High Stakes Romance (Heroes of Evers, TX Book 6) James and Presley by Lori Ryan and this review was given freely.

Just as James and Presley find hope in their personal and professional lives, James’s past returns in the form of attempted murder. Dark but hopeful with an action packed ending. This poignant story has some suspense but is mainly the story of James and Presley’s struggles to rebuild their lives and find love after leaving controlling situations. Contains the dark themes of post military PTSD and depression, military corruption, and the sinister side behind competitive equestrian competition but also offers hope in the form of family, good friends, service dog Lulu, his former team member Hunt, and in General Brophy.

Rescued after years held in the jungles of South America, former Army black ops soldier, “The Illusion”, James Lawless returns to the US and his sister Laura Bishop’s family ranch where he finds refuge in the isolation of his barn apartment/ woodshop and, his emotions challenged by the introverted 3 time Olympian Equestrian medalist Presley Royale who is tired of her sterile life of competitive show jumping, her cold controlling parents, and is ready to embark on her florist shop dream.
18+ for steamy scenes and violence.

What went wrong? Something was screwed up. James was injured in a failed mission & was taken prisoner by a drug cartel. He's lost years of his life while no one in the States knew he was alive. Now that he's been rescued, he's most comfortable in the dark away from the public at his sister Laura's ranch. He has a service dog that is helping him but he wants to make sure he doesn't hurt anyone so he holds himself aloof. Why can't he keep Presley out?

Presley is a champion show jumper that no longer loves what she does. She boards one of her retired horses at Laura's. While she's spending time with Tess, her horse, feelings begin to develop towards James. Somehow Presley seems to know what James needs or wants better than he does. When James' past comes to haunt them, can she handle it?

Ms. Ryan knows how to grab your attention from the first page & keep it until the very end. Her characters are complicated, intense, multi-faceted individuals. They are realistic & engage your emotions. At times, I teared up & felt so much sympathy for James & his experiences. The plot has twists & turns that are unexpected. This is a great addition to the Evers Texas series but can be read as a stand alone.

This is the second book of this series I have read and as much as I liked book 5 , I LOVED this one.
This is the story of James Lawless and Presley Royale. He is a former Special Forces Army man who was captured and tortured for 4 years and is now a shell of the man he was , living in isolation and with PTSD. Presley, is an accomplished equestrian who wants to live her life on her own terms and not that of her parents.
The relationship of these two is heartbreaking as well as heartwarming. At times, I wanted to walk into the pages of the book so I could give James a hug , even though he probably would not have been to happy with me !
The story is filled with action, suspense, bad guys and of course , romance.
But it’s more than that. It’s a reminder that the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to keep us safe, deserve our support, assistance and thanks . As a nation we need to make available more options to assist those that return not only with physical but also with emotional and psychological scars.
Kudos to Ms Ryan for a great story.
I was gifted this copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Luckily, healing former POW, James Lawless is there to help when Olympic medal winner, top equestrienne Presley Royale when the personal mount she stables at Bishop ranch injures her. As Presley and James dance around a soft attraction as James struggles to adjust to freedom after five captive years, Presley decides to retire from the sport. Her parents implode.

James helps himself with a support dog, a therapist, venturing to town and socialization, turning his busywork into a job, and nightmares surrounding his captivity but Presley is a helpful constant to his world. Homebound after a teammate’s funeral, where James revealed his returning memory, James and Presley barely evade shots fired at them. That’s just the start.

Sometimes sweet, sometime horrible, always smooth read that’s a really good addition to the series. That said, this reader is weary of the kidnap trope used in each outing. The storyline, action and damaged leads finding each other plus the needed strength in each other was a good read from start to finish.

EXCELLENT!!!!!!😇

What a good story this was! James had been through hell and was trying to deal with the emotional ramifications and Pres was trying to find her way to being, and doing, what her heart had wanted for a long time! They were a great couple. Passionate yes, but also super caring and kind to each other. I really liked the way they interacted with each other. It was very heartwarming the way Pres let James be who he was without judgement. How she held him and let him lean on her when he needed to while dealing with his "ghosts". I liked the way the characters from the previous books in the series all rallied around with affection and support!! The mystery and suspense was well done and once again Lori Ryan had me anxious as if James and Pres were real people and turning the pages fast to see what was going to happen to them next!!! 😃. I highly recommend this book... It was an excellent read!!!

I absolutely loved reading James
& Presley's story! It is a awesome romance suspense book.
In South America, something went terribly wrong with the mission. James had been MIA for 5 years. He is having a difficult time adjusting to his new life. He has been having flashbacks & nightmares about what happened to him, but feels like there is something important he's not remembering.
Presley is the daughter, of the owners of Royale Farms. She has been a champion jumper, since she was a child. Presley has never been able to think for herself. But Presley decides it's time to do what she wants in life.
Her horse Tess, is boarded at the Bishop Ranch, where James' lives. James & Presley are cautious, as they get to know each other. The attraction is there, but they are both not looking for a relationship.
I could not put it down till the very end!!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR EVERYONE!!

Entering into the light

This book is another reminder of what keeps Americans living in freedom. There are men and women willing to sacrifice their lives to ensure citizens can go about their daily lives planning and reaching for their dreams. As Jsmes story unfolds, alongside Hunt and Lars, the need to respect and care for veterans is shown. Many thousands of Lulu's are needed as service dogs. This love story isn't as sweet and humorous as others in this series but was intense and gripped my attention from start to finish. General Brody reappears as do all the friends in Evers, Texas . I recommend this series but think it's most enjoyable when you read the books in order.

it was a shock having james’ book immediately right after the previous happenings.

this was also the books where i felt their love from their deepest thoughts and hearts rather than their actions and them spending time together on paper. i just felt it. that they are so right for each other.

i think james’ character was written well. his reflection of his trauma was so realistically done.

what i wanted more was from presley. i think i wanted more of her layers and more of her. (period).

she’s badass tho and i love her smart thinking especially at the end of the book. we love a girl who uses her head right woot woot

Another nail-biter! Presley thought all she wanted in life was to be a champion in the Grand Prix Circuit of horse jumping.
James is trying to come back into the world after being held captive by drug lords.
James doesn't think he can be what Presley needs or should want in life with the darkness in him.
Little by little Presley gets under James' skin and into his heart as she helps him cope with his episodes.
Great characters, great story, well researched, and a great love story. This whole series is awesome! I highly recommend it.

James Lawless lived through hell but now he's in Evers with his sister Laura and her family. But he's damaged, broken probably not repairable. Presley Royale has spent her whole life becoming an elite equestrian but she's ready for more. Ready to live life on her terms and no one else's. She and James start with bonding over a horse. Slowly, ever so slowly, he allows her in and reveals bits of his pain. She, in turn, share her dreams with him. When his past catches up with them and puts Presley in peril. James will do whatever is necessary to keep her safe. With deadly force if need be.

James and Presley’s captured my attention from the very beginning and throughout the book. This is an emotional story with some serious subject matter. The author handled their love affair with such respect. James and Presley accepted each other, just as they are. They never forced each other to give more than were capable of giving.
The book has a very intense ending before the HEA. The other couples of Evers, TX. make appearances, especially his sister, Laura. Lulu is a great addition to the book.

A great story

Can you imagine so much pain, that you block everything from your mind? PTSD affects approximately 3.5 percent of U.S. adults every year, and an estimated one in 11 people will be diagnosed with PTSD in their lifetime. Women are twice as likely as men to have PTSD. This is a subject near and dear to my heart, as my son has PTSD.

James had spent nearly five years as a prisoner, before being rescued. Lulu, the large Pyrenees mix his brother-in-law had trained as a service dog for him, sat by his side while he was working on the bookcase. Working with wood helped soothed him.

Presley, much to her parents’ dismay, wasn’t born wanting to be the center of attention. Her parents are proud of her though, as a champion jumper. But Presley is done with jumping, she wants to retire. She wants to open up a floral shop.

James and Presley

This is a great emotional read. James Lawless has been rescued physically from the men who held him captive but PTSD still holds him captive. His therapy dog Lulu and his working with wood helps but Presley Royale and her retired jumper Tess helps even more. James’ past comes back to haunt him for real and he realizes what’s important and he will do anything to keep her safe. This book focuses a lot on the horrors of PTSD and the struggles for a couple coping with this. Get your tissues and settle in for more from Evers, Texas.

The book was decent. Enjoyable. I liked the story line. It was steady and interesting without overtaking the romance portion of the story.

James and Presley were good together. Not explosive but definitely decent chemistry. I liked seeing Presley come out of her shell and really take control of her life. And I liked seeing her with James: steady and patient just like she was with Horses.

Kind of wish we got more backstory or a better conclusion on her parent’s relationship.

Overall it was just a decently written, short romance.

Excellent story-line. I’ve loved every book in this series. There’s intensity; there are hero’s we can love; and, there is romance in Evers, Texas. A soldier held captive for years, comes home with serious PTSD, healing wounds and to a sister who provides a place for healing. Then we have Presley Royale of the Royale Stables who competes in jumping with her father as her coach. I love the writing by this author and plan to read the next book.

This one is super emotional. I had all the feels while reading about James and Presley. Presley having to make some hard choices and then meeting James, and all he went thru and continued to go thru. Wow, it was just intense. They are perfect for each other, and I can sigh with relief, they are both alive and living their HEA.

This one is my favourite so far, James being held captive for 4 years obviously caused trauma, could he live again and love again. If any one could help him it was Presley. A lovely book, thoroughly enjoyed reading this, once I started reading I had to complete the book. Can't wait for the next one.

Love happy ever afters

Welcome to Evers, Texas. I have read all the previous books in this series and this one is another winner. James and Presley must fight through his PTSD and her change in life to find their way to each other. They are just starting to find their way when James' past threatens their future.

Anxiously waiting for the next installment.

A healing love

This is one of those stories that really gets to you. It treats the subject of ptsd syndrome and the slow recovery of the mentally and physically wounded with insight and respect. Love and understanding can go along way in helping to heal injuries that might not be seen to the naked eye.

Another Action Packed Story

Here's another action packed story. Not just romantic action,(there is sexual content), there are bad guys aplenty with weapon trafficking, guys shooting up cars and killing people. There's even a cute service dog, and flashbacks that are key to solving what's going on. I love it!

Good

This book was good. It wasn’t as intense as the others, I felt, but I enjoyed how it was the man in the relationship who was struggling and the woman was the rock. I wish the book had more detail, such as descriptions or more meat to the fight scenes, but I still enjoyed it.

Captive!

Cherish and Protect: WOW! Excellent! I loved the suspense, surprises and got romance. James always though he would never get away from everything he went through when he was held captive. He met Presley thought he does deserve her with how messed up he was but she was his support. It was an amazing story!

always

This author always hits a home run. This book isn’t any different. It’s fantastic. With all sorts of angst and swoony moments and high stress and suspense. This story is about healing and living under your own rules and not living for others. It’s about acceptable and if anything’s sexy it’s that.

Awesome

I loved this story. James PTSD is something so many people have to struggle with…me included. It was nice to see the coping methods used for his issues. The story was awesome. When he started remembering, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. I highly recommend this series.
