[3.75 Stars] Wow, that was such a fun first book in a series. I found it to be perfectly balanced between fast-paced adventure and mystery solving. I really liked the five kingdoms and the different animals we got to meet. The book only covers two days or so, so I didn't get everything I wanted. For instance, do these kids ever go to class at this school? Characters also gain and lose trust way quickly, and Simon makes some obviously poor choices. Listen to your mom and uncle, kid! But I loved it anyway, and I'm excited to have an arc of the second book. I'll definitely be doing a review after I finish it!

Mein elfjähriger Neffe leiht mir immer mal Bücher und da waren schon einige Highlights dabei, die ich sonst nicht entdeckt hätte. Diesem hier merkt man seine Zielgruppe aber deutlich an. Ich musste mir immer wieder ins Gedächtnis rufen, dass die Hauptperson eben ein Kind ist und deshalb reichlich undurchdachte Entscheidungen trifft. Obwohl er zugegeben auch nicht anders kann, weil ihm von den Erwachsenen schlicht niemand etwas erzählt.
Die Hälfte der Handlung wäre nicht passiert, wenn sich einer mal die Zeit genommen hätte ihm irgendwas zu erklären. Das ist eh ein Problem in vielen Büchern, dass um jemanden zu schützen ihm nichts erzählt wird und derjenige dann genau deshalb von einer Gefahr in die nächste stolpert. Da bildet dieses hier keine Ausnahme. Zudem finde ich den Umgang mit Gewalt recht bedenklich. Es wird zwar nichts grafisch geschildert, aber die Androhung von Tod und Gewalt durch Mitschüler und "Lehrer" ist allgegenwärtig und wird auch nicht reflektiert.
Gern hätte ich erstmal mehr über die Welt der Animox und ihr Leben unter uns erfahren, bevor man direkt in den Konflikt geworfen wird. Aber vielleicht kommt das ja noch in den folgenden Teilen. Die actionreiche Geschichte, die interessanten Charaktere, die vielen spannenden Möglichkeiten, die das Verwandeln in Tiere mit sich bringt und die offenen Fragen am Ende verleiten mich auf jeden Fall dazu hier weiterzulesen.
Ich hatte zudem das Glück Buch und Hörbuch gleichzeitig zu genießen und muss sagen, dass letzteres ungleich mehr Spaß gemacht hat. Es ist hervorragend von Peter Kaempfe gelesen, mit genau der richtigen Betonung um alle Charaktere auseinanderhalten zu können und ohne die Stimme zu sehr zu verstellen. Sehr zu empfehlen!

Eigentlich ist Simon ein ganz normaler Junge. Ein großes Geheimnis hat er allerdings: er kann mit Tieren sprechen. Doch plötzlich steckt Simon mitten in einem Abenteuer! Er erfährt, dass er nicht nur mit Tieren sprechen kann, sondern dass er sich sogar in ein Tier verwandeln kann! Und dann wird seine Mutter von Ratten entführt, Simon lernt seinen Zwillingsbruder kennen und steckt mitten in der Schlacht der fünf Tierkönigreiche!

Other than the almost constant action sequences and perennially popular (among children) animals, this book has very little to recommend it. There is little to no character development. The plot line is sketchy and constantly loops back on itself. The protagonist flits from "solution" to "solution," being wrong for more than 95% of the book and repeatedly jeopardizing himself, his family, and his friends because he is always certain he is 100% right. The dialogue is stilted. The "suspense" is contrived and completely illogical. For example, somehow thousands of rats swarming three running humans in central New York City are unable to a) take down said humans despite their numbers and speed, and b) raise even a flicker of an eyebrow among the other humans on the street who apparently find swarms of rats unremarkable.
In short, my expectations were not met and I was very disappointed in this book. I have no interest in reading the next title in this series. Kids who like to skim/read quickly may find this book appealing, but honestly I cannot give it a strong recommendation for any audience. I am, however, between 3 and 4 times the age of the intended audience of this book, so my opinion shouldn't be considered authoritative (although as a librarian who reviews children's literature frequently, it shouldn't necessarily be immediately discarded...).

A really fun beginning to what should be a super cool series. A nice amount of twists and an interesting collection of supporting characters keep a pretty packed story moving at a good clip. And I didn't hate the main character! I know, that sounds like faint praise, but believe me, if you knew how I usually felt about the child protagonists of series at this reading level, you'd be more impressed. With Simon, Carter has fashioned a genuinely likable and realistic hero (as realistic as one can be in a story about people talking to and turning into animals, that is). IT definitely only feels like the start of something bigger, but the good news is that it does set up a compelling mythology that should give Carter a lot of material to play with as the series continues.

War ansich ne interessante Geschichte und die Idee fand ich auch super.
Aber irgendwie habe ich das Gefühl,dass es erst im zweiten Teil so richtig Los geht mit der eigentlichen Handlung.
Daher hatte ich manchmal den Wunsch,dass etwas mehr Action reinkommt.
Aber das ist natürlich Geschmacksache.

Hallo ihr Lieben,
obwohl diese Bücher ja eher für die jüngere Leserschaft ist, konnte die Geschichte mich mit sich reißen!
Die Idee finde ich neu und deshalb sehr interessant. Der Schreibstil ist lockerleicht und dementsprechend gut zu lesen.
Ich bin gespannt auf die weiteren Teile!

What a fun ride! I love talking to animals and shape shifting so I knew I would enjoy this one, but it's also action-packed with a nice emphasis on family and friendship. Looking forward to book two.

Well, consider me disappointed.

Twelve-year-old Simon Thorn’s life has never been easy or normal, but things like being bullied at school and living in a cramped Manhattan apartment with his Uncle Darrell are nothing compared to his biggest secret: He can talk to animals.
But when his mom is suddenly kidnapped by a herd of rats, Simon finds out that he, his mom, and his uncle are all Animalgams—people born with the ability to change into an animal at will.
In search of his mom, Simon discovers the Animalgam Academy based at the Central Park Zoo. There he learns about the fractured five kingdoms that make up this secret world . . . and realizes he may be the only one who can save it.

Uncle Darryl was an interesting character. So in stories where the protagonist has to live with a relative (like an uncle or an aunt or someone else), the relative is usually evil with basically no redeeming qualities whatsoever. While Uncle Darryl has his flaws, he actually does care about Simon and does his best to be loving and supportive.
There's some aspects of the worldbuilding that I find kind of cool. For example, much like with Earning My Spots, the sheer variety of shifters (or in this novel's case, Animalgams) is amazing. Seriously, there's mammals, birds, reptiles, insects. You name it, it's in here. I also find the idea of the academy being under the Central Park Zoo to be rather clever, as both contain a wide variety of different animals and both often serve as a way to prepare its residents for the outside world (or in the case of zoos, help rehabilitate animals that need it in order for them to successfully live in the wild).
The character development was beyond disappointing. Aside from Uncle Darryl, Simon, Nolan, and Jam, none of the characters were that fleshed out and even when characters (like Simon and Nolan) got actual arcs, the novel absolutely bungled them by not giving them the time to properly blossom. Seriously, it takes like one or two moments of peril way before the end and then boom! Arc over. Really? As a result, I had an extremely difficult time getting invested in the characters and it took away a lot of the impact the novel could've had. Now I know this might seem like a weird complaint for a middle grade novel, but here's the thing. The Evil Wizard Smallbone, Earning My Spots, and Frenzy are all middle grade novels, yet the characters in those novels are much more compelling and much more fleshed out.
This novel also has some weird plot holes.
So in chapter five, Simon claims that he hasn't shifted into another form yet. But, in chapter two, he snaps at a bully named Bryan, which leads to this: "That burning knot in his chest exploded, and Simon roared. His hand shot out, his fingers curled into claws, and he swiped his nails against Bryan’s face. Bright red lines sprouted across Bryan’s cheek, and he faltered, his mouth open in shock." In other words, he did shift. At least, partially. So, why have Simon say he hasn't shifted at all? Why not just have him say something like, "Uh... kinda?" It would be more in line with what happened.
In chapter thirteen, Simon and his friend Winter come across The Predator, a scepter that, when combined with the stones of each kingdom (i.e mammals, birds, insects, etc), will allow the user to transform into more than just the animal they were born to transform into and basically be all powerful. Should The Predator and the stones fall into The Alpha's hands, it's game over and she already has every kingdom but the bird kingdom under her control. However, instead of destroying the scepter or something, they just decide to put it back where they found it in the hopes that The Alpha won't find it. Why? How is this a better plan than just destroying the scepter and rendering The Alpha's plan useless? The scepter isn't made of super strong material or anything and there's also nothing to suggest that destroying the scepter has negative consequences like killing or taking away every Animalgam's powers. So what gives? Yeah, I know that Winter was asked by Simon's grandfather to retrieve the scepter, but that still doesn't explain why Simon wasn't able to just destroy it when he got a decent chance instead of waiting until the last minute and failing in chapter twenty-three.
I'm also confused as to how shifting is supposed to work. Sometimes, extreme emotions or life threatening situations can trigger someone to fully transform (such as in chapter twenty-four when Simon transforms into a golden eagle when falls off the Sky Tower and in chapter twenty-six when Simon transforms into a wolf when he becomes extremely overwhelmed while visiting Uncle Darryl's grave), but other times it has little to no effect (such as in chapter two when Simon snaps at Bryan and partially transforms and in chapter sixteen when Simon dove into the polar bear exhibit to save his brother Nolan and nothing happened). Also, other Animalgams can just transform with little to no effort and there's no explanation for it. Is transforming based on thought commands? Pure confidence in one's ability to transform? I don't know and I don't understand why there couldn't be a little more consistency here.
Now, to be fair, the series that this novel is a part of was originally written in German and the version I read was an English translation, so some of these issues could very well be a product of the translation. However, they still really got on my nerves.
Overall, Simon Thorn and The Wolf's Den was a novel with some clever and creative ideas, but those ideas just weren't enough to save it from being really lackluster. To be honest, unless the rest of the series is somehow an improvement, I really don't see myself continuing this series.

Animox war eine Empfehlung eines sehr guten Freundin. Ich hatte dieses Buch vor 3 Jahren schonmal gelesen und bin bis zum 4. Band gekommen. Jetzt wollte ich es erneut lesen, da es mich wieder mehr interessierte...
Dieses Buch ist ein echter Hammer! Eine tolle Handlung! Es war zu jeder Situation spannend und ab der Seite 200 konnte ich das Buch gar nicht mehr weglegen und war noch bis 0:30 wach, da ich es unbedingt fertig lesen wollte 😁 Die Charaktere sind unterschiedlich und alle auch irgendwie geheimnisvoll. Nach und nach bildete sich in meinem Kopf ein immer genauerer Stammbaum... Als ich noch jünger war, verstand ich einige Dinge noch nicht, die ich aber jetzt deutlicher sah... Die ganzen Verräter (Spoiler 😉) waren teils überraschend, teils auch irgendwie logisch!
Es gibt so viel über dieses Buch zu sagen, aber das wichtigste ist; Dieses Buch ändert eindeutig die Ansicht über Tauben und alle anderen Tiere!! 🕊

Wow an amazing book the layout of the story and how it unraveled as I read this story it takes you in turns you around & around and then takes you for the wild ride of your life & one you won't forget a wonderful story in wish I enjoyed reading tremendously and do so hope to read more books from the author. Truly a fabulous gift from the amazing author my thanks to the author Aimee Carter for the privilege & the wonderful pleasure of reading her wonderful book yes I do give this book 5 stars I would give it more if I could so I will be so delighted to recommend this wonderful book to my friends so yes happy, happy reading to all from wee me. ♥☻

A fun start to a series that will hook fans of Percy Jackson, as well as animal lovers! Young Simon and his friends and family are fascinating, and this is an awesome use of setting as well. I didn't know that the Central Park Zoo could contain so much!

I really enjoyed this novel. It tells the story of 12 year old Simon Thorn, the boy who speaks with pigeons, squirrels, and mice, the boy who lives with his uncle, the boy who only sees him mom once or twice a year. After a mysterious eagle shows up telling Simon he is in trouble, his mom, uncle, and Simon have to escape from a hoard of rats that are hellbent on harming them. Simon is separated from his mom and uncle and taken to his grandfather, Orion, where he discovers there is more to him than just being able to talk to animals.
The story was very fast-paced and action-packed. I could see this being such an easy read for any voracious middle grade-level reader. I don't think it was too info-dumpy, but it was still pretty well explained. Simon makes some idiotic choices and trusts far too easily and definitely does not have any basis for trusting the people he does. But I think that is to be expected from a 12 year old child. I really loved the L.A.I.R. parts and cannot wait to read the sequel, especially after the twist at the end, which I did NOT see coming.
One of the only things that really threw me off was the use of "seaweed brain" without referencing PJ.
I really enjoyed this novel. It tells the story of 12 year old Simon Thorn, the boy who speaks with pigeons, squirrels, and mice, the boy who lives with his uncle, the boy who only sees him mom once or twice a year. After a mysterious eagle shows up telling Simon he is in trouble, his mom, uncle, and Simon have to escape from a hoard of rats that are hellbent on harming them. Simon is separated from his mom and uncle and taken to his grandfather, Orion, where he discovers there is more to him than just being able to talk to animals.
The story was very fast-paced and action-packed. I could see this being such an easy read for any voracious middle grade-level reader. I don't think it was too info-dumpy, but it was still pretty well explained. Simon makes some idiotic choices and trusts far too easily and definitely does not have any basis for trusting the people he does. But I think that is to be expected from a 12 year old child. I really loved the L.A.I.R. parts and cannot wait to read the sequel, especially after the twist at the end, which I did NOT see coming.

In diesem Buch geht es um Simon. Dieser kann mit Tieren sprechen und hält dies vor seinen Mitschülern und seinem Onkel bei dem er aufwächst geheim. Aufgrund seines etwas sonderbaren Verhaltens wird er gemoppt und hat kaum Freunde. Eines Tages tauch ein Adler auf der ihn vor anderen Tieren warnt und seine Mutter wird von Ratten entführt. Simon erfährt das er Animox ist, jemand der sich in ein Tier verwandeln kann. Die Frage ist nur in welches Tier sich Simon am Ende verwandeln wird. Aber das müsst ihr selbst lesen.
Insgesamt hat mir die Geschichte richtig gut gefallen. Ich kam trotz, dass es ein Kinderbuch war richtig gut rein und wurde auch sehr gut unterhalten. Auch die Spannung war echt gut. Ich mochte Simon als Hauptcharakter und auch seine Freunde und Familie sehr gerne. Die Geschichte der Animox, der 5 Tierkönigreiche und des Bestienkönigs zu lesen war auch richtig cool. Und auch das L.A.G.E.R. mit seinen Regeln, wo die Geschichte teilweise spielt war interessant. Ich freue mich auf die weiteren Teile der Reihe und hoffe, dass ich diese bald fortsetzen kann. Leider waren ein paar der Dinge die passiert sind für mich auch vorhersehbar. Das konnte ich aber gut unter dem Schirm „Es ist ein Kinderbuch“ verschmerzen. Es gab aber auch ein paar Dinge die ich nicht vorhergesehen habe. Ein richtig tolles Buch zum Jahresbeginn wo ich hoffe das ich die Reihe bald weiterlese.

Sehr cooles Buch. Bleibt immer interessant und man verliert nie die Lust. Empfehle ich weiter. Deshalb gebe ich dem Buch ganze 5 Sterne ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Meinung:
Zuerst hatte ich das Buch nicht auf dem Schirm, bin jedoch durch eine Blogtour darauf aufmerksam geworden. Kaum eingezogen, konnte ich mich auch schon in die Seiten stürzen.
Die Geschichte beginnt recht typisch und vorhersehbar. Simon hat ein Geheimnis, für das ihn außerhalb alle für einen Spinner halten: Er kann mit Tieren sprechen. Wozu er aber nicht sehr oft Gelegenheit hat, denn selbst Besuche im Central Park wurden ihm verboten. Dennoch wählt er eines Tages diesen Weg und wird von einem riesengroßen Adler gewarnt.
Kurz darauf stürmen Horden von Ratten seine Wohnung und entführen seine Mutter. Simon erfährt die Wahrheit über seine Fähigkeiten und macht sich auf, seine Mutter zu befreien.
Doch hinter dem Krieg der Tierreiche steckt mehr, als auf den ersten Blick zu erkennen ist.
Der Einstieg an der Seite von Simon gelang leicht. Aimee Carter erzählt die Geschichte aus dritter Perspektive, was ein klein wenig Distanz zu den Emotionen des Protagonisten Simon schafft. So war es nicht weiter verwunderlich, dass ich trotz Entführung und schlimmer Dinge, die ihm widerfahren sind, nicht so wirklich mitfühlen konnte. Was vielleicht aber auch am Erzähltempo lag.
Die Autorin beschreibt nur das Nötigste und hält sich nicht mit ausschweifenden Details auf, was ich sehr befürworte.
Aimee Carters Erzählstil ist locker und leichtgängig und sehr schnell zu lesen, sodass die Geschichte rasend schnell an mir vorbeizog.
Die Welt rund um die Animox, der Krieg der 5 Tierreiche und die Legende des Bestienkönigs haben mir sehr gefallen, jedoch war die Geschichte alles in allem doch sehr vorhersehbar und die Plotpoints waren alles andere als überraschend, was der Spannung etwas schadete.
Nichtsdestotrotz habe ich das Buch gerne gelesen und bin in die Welt der Animox eingetaucht, habe an der Seite von Simon neue Freunde gefunden und wurde von nicht gerade wenigen Bekanntschaften schwer enttäuscht.
Der Showdown war aufgrund der Distanz zur Figur nicht ganz so nervenaufreibend wie vielleicht von der Autorin vorgesehen, aber dennoch fesselnd, ehe dieser erste Band mit einer neuen (leider erwarteten) Entwicklung vorerst zufriedenstellend endet.

Der 12-jährige Simon lebt bei seinem Onkel, weil seine Mutter beruflich sehr viel unterwegs ist. Simon ist nicht besonders glücklich mit dieser Situation, denn er vermisst seine Mutter sehr. In der Schule hat er es auch nicht leicht, denn die anderen Schüler mobben ihn und halten ihn für verrückt, da er angeblich mit Tieren spricht. Was seine Schulkameraden nicht wissen ist, dass er wirklich mit Tieren sprechen kann, aber keine Ahnung hat, woher dieser Gabe kommt.
Das ändert sich an dem Tag, als seine Mutter von Ratten entführt wird und sein Onkel sich in einen Wolf verwandelt. Simon und seine Familie gehören zu den Animox, Gestaltenwandlern. Nur sind die 5 herrschenden Familien alle irgendwie verfeindet und Simon steckt plötzlich mitten in diesen Streitigkeiten.
Bei dieser Hörbuch handelt es sich um den 1. Teil einer Jugendbuchreihe ab 11 Jahre. Ich habe dieses Alter zwar bereits vor langer Zeit hinter mir gelassen, wurde aber insgesamt wirklich sehr gut unterhalten. Manche Geschichte kommen als Hörbuch wirklich gut rüber, so das man sie auch als Erwachsener gut hören kann. Gelesen wird das Hörbuch von Peter Kämpfe, dessen Stimmte sehr gut zu dieser Geschichte passt. Hauptfigur ist der 12-jährige Simon, dessen Leben von Heute auf Morgen ganz schön auf den Kopf gestellt wird. Er ist nämlich ein Animox, ein Gestaltenwandler. Noch hat er sich nicht gewandelt, aber seine erste Wandlung steht kurz bevor. Simon ist ein netter Kerl und hatte es bisher nicht einfach im Leben. Auch die neue Situation als Animox ist für ihn nicht einfach, aber er versucht das Beste daraus zu machen. Die Geschichte wird sehr abenteuerlich erzählt. Die Grenzen zwischen Gut und Böse verwischen und Simon muss entscheiden, wem er trauen kann und wem nicht. Er macht eine sehr gute Entwicklung im Laufe der Handlung durch, was mir sehr gut gefallen hat. Alles in Allem wurde ich sehr gut unterhalten und vergebe 9 von 10 Punkte.

Zum Inhalt:
Simon Thorn ist zwölf Jahre alt und lebt bei seinem Onkel Darryl, da seine Mutter viel auf Reisen als Zoologin ist. Eigentlich ist er ein ganz normaler Junge. Er geht bald in die siebte Klasse, wird immer wieder das Mobbingopfer von seinem Mitschüler Bryan und seiner Gang und er kann mit Tauben sprechen. Wie gesagt eigentlich. Er hütet sein Geheimnis wohl wissend, dass sein Onkel keine Tiere leiden kann und auch sein Mausekumpel Felix der mit in seinem Zimmer wohnt ist eines der wohl gehüteten Geheimnisse. Doch als Simon eines Tages von einem Adler gewarnt wird, dass er in Gefahr ist und an seiner Schule das geheimnisvolle Mädchen Winter auftaucht und behauptet, dass er nicht der einzige ist, der mit Tieren reden kann, verändert sich sein Leben schlagartig. Denn auf dem Nachhauseweg begegnet ihm wieder der Adler und im Park ein leibhaftiger Wolf, der den Jungen in wilder Panik nach Hause rennen lässt, wo er überraschender Weise nicht von seinem Onkel, sondern von seiner Mutter erwartet wird. Doch viel Zeit zur Wiedersehensfreude bleibt den beiden nicht, denn die Wohnung seines Onkels wird von einer Rattenarmee gestürmt, die den Auftrag hat Simon zu der Alpha der Säuger zu bringen. In dem ganzen Tumult erkennen seine Mutter und auch sein Onkel, das Simon mit Tieren sprechen kann und plötzlich sind sie wie ausgewechselt. Es wird von Geheimnissen und Wahrheiten gesprochen, doch vorerst müssen die drei aus der Wohnung verschwinden. Doch auf der Flucht wird Simons Mutter von den Ratten entführt und auch von Darryl wird er getrennt. Sein einziger Anhaltspunkt ist der Sky Tower in dem Orion, der Herr der Vögel wohnt. Sein Großvater. Doch kann er ihm vertrauen?
Simon wird in eine Welt geworfen, von der er sich nie zu träumen gewagt hatte. Er selbst soll sich ein Animox sein - Menschen die sich in Tiere verwandeln können. Er steht plötzlich zwischen den fünf Reichen der vorherrschenden Tierkönigreiche und muss sich in einer Schlacht behaupten, in der Freunde schnell zu Feinden werden können. Doch wem kann man noch vertrauen, wenn es um eine Macht geht, die die ganze Welt vernichtet könnte und man selbst gar nicht weiß, wo man in dieser Schlacht steht?
"Wenn ihr nicht sofort verschwindet, kommt mein Onkel, und ihr wisst ja, was er mit Tauben macht", drohte er.
Das verschlug ihnen die Sprache, und sie wechselten ängstliche Blicke. "Wir....Futter?", fragte die erste.
"Genau. Mein Onkel liebt Taubenpfannkuchen", sagte Simon. "könnt ihr den Teig riechen?"

Ich durfte das Buch im Rahmen einer Leserunde lesen und muss sagen, dass ich es regelrecht gefressen habe. Schon als ich das Buch aus seinem Briefumschlag nehmen durfte, war ich hin und weg. Das Cover ist in grünen und türkisen Tönen gehalten und mitten auf dem Cover prangert dieser gigantische Wolfskopf, mit rot glühenden Augen, in den gleichen Tönen. wenn man mit den Fingern über das Cover fährt, bemerkt man, dass der Kopf aus dem Cover ein Stück heraus kommt, was ich richtig cool finde.
Die Geschichte hat mich eigentlich sofort in ihren Bann gezogen. Durch die lockere und flüssige Schreibweise findet man schnell hinein und es macht Spaß Simons Welt zu erkunden. Die Autorin hat alles so gut beschrieben, dass man alles richtig vor sich sehen kann. So sieht man sofort die verfressenen Tauben auf dem Fenstersims oder den majestätischen Adler mit dem einzelnen Auge, der Simon vor der drohenden Gefahr warnt. Die Geschichte nimmt sehr schnell Fahrt auf, sodass man das Buch kaum noch aus der Hand legen mag. Es macht Spaß zu rätseln, welche Seite denn nun die Gute und welche die Schlechte ist. Man hält den Atem an, wenn wieder einmal etwas völlig unvorhersehbares passiert und man fiebert mit, wenn sich Simon auf seine waghalsigen Abenteuer begibt, um seine Mutter und seinen Onkel zu finden. Dieses Buch hat einfach so viel Suchtpotential, dass ich es kaum erwarten kann, dass es im nächsten Jahr die Fortsetzung gibt.
Die Tür flog auf. Erst meinte Simon, es wäre niemand da, doch dann hörte er Darryl schnauben, und ein starker Geruch nach verrottenden Müll dran in seine Nase. Als er durch den Mund Luft holte, sah er sie. Ratten - Hunderte und Hunderte - liefen durch das Treppenhaus....

Simon als Charakter muss man einfach ab der ersten Seite gern haben. Er hat es nicht einfach, da er seine Mutter selten sieht und in der Schule gemobbt wird, aber er hat seinen Onkel, den er über alles liebt und der ihm immer wieder Halt gibt. Zu Beginn ist er noch sehr unbeholfen und versteckt sich ein bisschen, doch im Laufe der Zeit wird Simon zu einem wahren Kämpfer und bekommt immer mehr Selbstbewusstsein. Dass Simon ein herzensguter Mensch ist, sieht man allein schon daran, dass er oft gutgläubig ist und versucht den Tieren wo er nur kann zu helfen.
Darryl als Onkel fand ich richtig klasse. Er ist zwar ein alter Brummbär, aber er sieht zu, dass es seinem Neffen gut geht, dafür nimmt er auch jede Gefahr auf sich. Obwohl er wenig Auftritte hatte, ist er mir richtig ans Herz gewachsen.
Winter fand ich von Anfang an irgendwie falsch und sogar ein bisschen hochnäsig. Zwischenzeitlich konnte sie sich ein bisschen in mein Herz schleichen, aber das hat sie genauso schnell wieder verwirkt. Ich stehe ihrem Charakter noch ein bisschen zwiegespalten gegenüber und ich bin mir noch immer nicht sicher, ob sie nun gut oder böse ist.
Orion war mir von Anfang an sehr unsympathisch und ich muss sagen, dass sich das auch nicht ein einziges Mal abgelegt hat. Ich hatte ihn schon die ganze Zeit im Verdacht. Wusste nur noch nicht so richtig, ob ich nun hunderprozentig richtig liege. Er war mir zu berechnend, zu schleimig, wenn es darum ging Simon zu umgarnen. Da war die Alpha schon direkter.
"Fünfzehn Minuten. Ich hatte mehr von dir erwartet, Simon Thorn. Du bist eine Schande für jeden Ausreißer." Simon blieb abrupt stehen. In einem vornehmen Polstersessel lümmelte Winter, ihr Buch in der Hand.

Empfehlen möchte ich das Buch allen Teenies, aber auch den Erwachsenen, die richtig guten Fantasy, Geheimnisse und Abenteuer mögen. Hier kommt ihr definitiv auf eure Kosten. Um ehrlich zu sein fehlen mir noch immer ein bisschen die Worte, so sehr hat mich die Geschichte in ihren Bann gezogen. Es ist bildgewaltig und von den Handlungen her so explosiv, dass man es gar nicht mehr aus den Händen legen möchte. Lest es!

Doch auf der Flucht wird Simons Mutter von den Ratten entführt und auch von Darryl wird er getrennt. Sein einziger Anhaltspunkt ist der Sky Tower in dem Orion, der Herr der Vögel wohnt. Sein Großvater. Doch kann er ihm vertrauen?
Simon wird in eine Welt geworfen, von der er sich nie zu träumen gewagt hatte. Er selbst soll sich ein Animox sein - Menschen die sich in Tiere verwandeln können. Er steht plötzlich zwischen den fünf Reichen der vorherrschenden Tierkönigreiche und muss sich in einer Schlacht behaupten, in der Freunde schnell zu Feinden werden können. Doch wem kann man noch vertrauen, wenn es um eine Macht geht, die die ganze Welt vernichtet könnte und man selbst gar nicht weiß, wo man in dieser Schlacht steht?
"Wenn ihr nicht sofort verschwindet, kommt mein Onkel, und ihr wisst ja, was er mit Tauben macht", drohte er.
Das verschlug ihnen die Sprache, und sie wechselten ängstliche Blicke. "Wir....Futter?", fragte die erste.
"Genau. Mein Onkel liebt Taubenpfannkuchen", sagte Simon. "könnt ihr den Teig riechen?"

Ich durfte das Buch im Rahmen einer Leserunde lesen und muss sagen, dass ich es regelrecht gefressen habe. Schon als ich das Buch aus seinem Briefumschlag nehmen durfte, war ich hin und weg. Das Cover ist in grünen und türkisen Tönen gehalten und mitten auf dem Cover prangert dieser gigantische Wolfskopf, mit rot glühenden Augen, in den gleichen Tönen. wenn man mit den Fingern über das Cover fährt, bemerkt man, dass der Kopf aus dem Cover ein Stück heraus kommt, was ich richtig cool finde.
Die Geschichte hat mich eigentlich sofort in ihren Bann gezogen. Durch die lockere und flüssige Schreibweise findet man schnell hinein und es macht Spaß Simons Welt zu erkunden. Die Autorin hat alles so gut beschrieben, dass man alles richtig vor sich sehen kann. So sieht man sofort die verfressenen Tauben auf dem Fenstersims oder den majestätischen Adler mit dem einzelnen Auge, der Simon vor der drohenden Gefahr warnt. Die Geschichte nimmt sehr schnell Fahrt auf, sodass man das Buch kaum noch aus der Hand legen mag. Es macht Spaß zu rätseln, welche Seite denn nun die Gute und welche die Schlechte ist. Man hält den Atem an, wenn wieder einmal etwas völlig unvorhersehbares passiert und man fiebert mit, wenn sich Simon auf seine waghalsigen Abenteuer begibt, um seine Mutter und seinen Onkel zu finden. Dieses Buch hat einfach so viel Suchtpotential, dass ich es kaum erwarten kann, dass es im nächsten Jahr die Fortsetzung gibt.
Die Tür flog auf. Erst meinte Simon, es wäre niemand da, doch dann hörte er Darryl schnauben, und ein starker Geruch nach verrottenden Müll dran in seine Nase. Als er durch den Mund Luft holte, sah er sie. Ratten - Hunderte und Hunderte - liefen durch das Treppenhaus....

Simon als Charakter muss man einfach ab der ersten Seite gern haben. Er hat es nicht einfach, da er seine Mutter selten sieht und in der Schule gemobbt wird, aber er hat seinen Onkel, den er über alles liebt und der ihm immer wieder Halt gibt. Zu Beginn ist er noch sehr unbeholfen und versteckt sich ein bisschen, doch im Laufe der Zeit wird Simon zu einem wahren Kämpfer und bekommt immer mehr Selbstbewusstsein. Dass Simon ein herzensguter Mensch ist, sieht man allein schon daran, dass er oft gutgläubig ist und versucht den Tieren wo er nur kann zu helfen.
Darryl als Onkel fand ich richtig klasse. Er ist zwar ein alter Brummbär, aber er sieht zu, dass es seinem Neffen gut geht, dafür nimmt er auch jede Gefahr auf sich. Obwohl er wenig Auftritte hatte, ist er mir richtig ans Herz gewachsen.
Winter fand ich von Anfang an irgendwie falsch und sogar ein bisschen hochnäsig. Zwischenzeitlich konnte sie sich ein bisschen in mein Herz schleichen, aber das hat sie genauso schnell wieder verwirkt. Ich stehe ihrem Charakter noch ein bisschen zwiegespalten gegenüber und ich bin mir noch immer nicht sicher, ob sie nun gut oder böse ist.
Orion war mir von Anfang an sehr unsympathisch und ich muss sagen, dass sich das auch nicht ein einziges Mal abgelegt hat. Ich hatte ihn schon die ganze Zeit im Verdacht. Wusste nur noch nicht so richtig, ob ich nun hunderprozentig richtig liege. Er war mir zu berechnend, zu schleimig, wenn es darum ging Simon zu umgarnen. Da war die Alpha schon direkter.
"Fünfzehn Minuten. Ich hatte mehr von dir erwartet, Simon Thorn. Du bist eine Schande für jeden Ausreißer." Simon blieb abrupt stehen. In einem vornehmen Polstersessel lümmelte Winter, ihr Buch in der Hand.

Empfehlen möchte ich das Buch allen Teenies, aber auch den Erwachsenen, die richtig guten Fantasy, Geheimnisse und Abenteuer mögen. Hier kommt ihr definitiv auf eure Kosten. Um ehrlich zu sein fehlen mir noch immer ein bisschen die Worte, so sehr hat mich die Geschichte in ihren Bann gezogen. Es ist bildgewaltig und von den Handlungen her so explosiv, dass man es gar nicht mehr aus den Händen legen möchte. Lest es!

What would you do if you discovered something that changed everything? Simon Thorn
had to ask a similar question in Simon Thorn and The Wolves Den by Aimée Carter. This book
falls between the adventure and science fiction. This book takes place in a modern setting and
deals with supernatural situations as well as real life ones. It dealt with animals and their
“Kingdoms” and was very interesting. It was an intriguing book and one that I would read again.
There were several main characters that were followed in the book; there was Simon
who was the protagonist, his brother, his uncles, his mother, and his best friends. The setting
was based in New York City. Most of the book took place in the Central Park Zoo. For Simon,
he wasn’t allowed to go into Central Park without his uncle. His mother was around on special
holidays and his birthday, but that was it. The book tells us what Simon thinks she is doing. She
sends postcards to him with different animals on them. His father was killed but that is all the
book tells us at the beginning. His school life wasn’t much better. He was bullied and his only
friend was trying to join the bullies. They made fun of him because his mother was never around
and because he talked with animals. However he was not the only one to talk with animals, all of
his family was able to. His family made him feel like he was alone because he didn’t know that
anyone else could talk with them. What he found he couldn’t comprehend. There was another
side to the world he knew. One with people who could shift into animals and talk to them and it
was split into kingdoms and one that had a brother for him that was a twin. There is a long
complex history that Simon wanted to find out but he found out that one of the brothers, Simon
or his brother, were the heir of the evilest Animalgam in the world.
I give this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars. The character development is good and it had a good
flow. They were relatable in some aspects but in others they are far from it. I feel as if there was
good communication between characters that helped push the story along. Another thing was it
had a good combination of action and exploration. It was also very suspenseful to figure out
which one was the Beast King's heir. I don’t feel like it talked enough about Simon’s father.
However it was a fun book to read and I would read it again.

Everyone has thought if I was an animal what animal would I be? Would I still be a human and be able to turn into an animal or would I be that animal forever? That fantasy is a reality in Simon Thorn and The Wolf’s Den by Aimee Carter. The book is a fictional story about Simon Thorn and his adventure to find himself and his mother who was kidnapped.
Simon is a 12 year old boy who is far from normal. He from a young age found out he had a special connection to animals. Animals were like his friends and one day he heard them talking and understood them. He found out that he could talk to animals. Bullies saw he had an odd connection with animals and not many friends so they made fun of him for this. He does not see his mom much and lives with his uncle Darrell in a New York apartment. One morning Simon was talking to the pigeons outside his window and waiting for Darrell to finish breakfast so he could feed the pigeons when an eagle came to his window with a message. The message was to follow the eagle and when he did he found out his mom was kidnapped by a pack of rats.
He now must save his mother and realizes he can turn into an animal. His mother and uncle have this same ability called animalgams. He discovers on the adventure that there is much more on the line then only his mother.
The book was well thought out, a good read, and well written but it is not for me. I give the book a three out of five because I like animals and it is a interesting story but I do not care much about becoming an animal anymore. A few years ago I would relate to this story more and I may give it a four but It is hard for me to fully dive into the story.

Simon Thorn is 12 years old and he's the kind of kid who gets bullied a lot. Simon gets bullied because people think he can talk to animals. He lives with his uncle after his dad died and his mother is always traveling. When rats start attacking him he hears his mom and uncle talking and learns that he's an Animalgam who can talk to animals and transform into animals. Simon ends up at the L. A. I. R., a secret school for Animalgams.
After the 4th chapter I wanted to read this book all the time. It had animals fighting on different sides and people transforming into animals. The two enemies are trying to assemble a weapon to rule over all 5 animal kingdoms (reptiles, mammals, fish, insects, and birds). Cool things were happening all the time. There were gross situations, weird situations, bad situations, and good situations. It's an action-packed book. There's also mysteries where you don't know what's going on and have to learn what's happening.
Kids who like action, animals, mysteries, and fight scenes would like this book. It had a few big words (like Animalgams) but it wasn't hard to read.
I will definitely read the rest of the series. There was a really good ending and it left me wondering what's going to happen next.

Spannende Gestaltwandler-Fantasy für alle ab 10! Das Buch war fesselnd und kurzweilig zugleich. Immer wieder gab es Überraschungen in der rasanten Handlung, sodass ich nicht anders konnte als das Buch an einem Stück zu lesen. Ein tolles Ensemble an Figuren findet hier zusammen. Die Geschichte übt einen so faszinierenden Sog auf mich aus, dass ich direkt im zweiten Band weiterlesen musste.

Was für ein tolles Kinderbuch im Urban Fantasy Stil.
Auch wenn ich nicht mehr zur Zielgruppe gehöre, hatte ich echt viel Spaß mit dem Auftaktband. Es hat mich an meine frühere Warrior Cats-Obsession erinnert.
Jetzt weiß ich, was die Kinder in unserem Freundeskreis zu Weihnachten bekommen werden :)

Der spannende Klappentext brachte mich dazu, das Buch zu kaufen.
Es lohnt sich sehr, die abenteuerliche Fantasy Geschichte des Protagonisten Simon zog mich ab der ersten Seite in den Bann. Der Kampf um Gerechtigkeit, mit der Thematik der Freundschaft, Familie und Selbstständigkeit.
Eine absolute Empfehlung für die junge Leserschaft.

It was ok. I wasn’t emotionally invested. One of my students loves this series, so I read it based upon his recommendation. It falls into the same category as many middle grade novels for me. Predictable plot, trite dialogue, flat characters, heavy-handed moral lessons, and villains with no redeemable qualities.
I prefer more complexity.

Simon isn't a very clever kid or maybe it's his age that makes him think he knows everything better than anyone else? And yes, he's almost always wrong but whatever.
The naming of the five kingdoms is most unfortunate as there is a mammal kingdom and yet dolphins belong in underwater kingdom with other "fish" (as they are titled in the book), also why there is an insect kingdom with definitely non-insect inhabitants is a bit mysterious. (Haha)
Also if someone in the past acquired certain traits by killing others, how can these same traits be passed down the line by genes?
Also a bit too preachy at times.
It's a good enough story and I guess 10-year-old kids might really like it. However, I don't think I'll read the following books.
