The Walker #2

Heart of the Walker

Rate this book
Its been a month since Josiah took what was left of our dying relationship and extinguished its embers. I’ve settled into my job at the Bakery in Dormas, and when I’m not avoiding Jules, I’m stealing moments with Maverick, Cyler, Jacob, Huxley, Patrick, and Kemper.

There's a subtle shift in the way we see one another now, one that makes my skin tingle and burn hot whenever one of them touches me. I find myself struggling to navigate the lingering heartbreak Josiah left behind while diving into this new and uncertain adventure.

But who has time for love when Emperor Lackley has his fist upon our little Providence? Will I finally feel at home in Dormas? Or will my new family be stolen from me before I’m able to tell them how I feel?

Buddy Read '2 in 1' with the girls at Reverse Harem Revolution (team #eatallthecake) ~

Rating : 2.5 stars rounded at three
Wings of the Walker: 3.5 stars

I'm very conflicted on how to rate this one for one reason only; I do not know if I liked it less or same as the previous book.

On one hand, the story -and the writing- improved a lot. There was a plot, action and the book ended with a big *BANG* .
But on the other, Ash basically went from main character to mere storyteller. She was the light of Wings of the Walker with her naivete and her kindness; she is borderline pathetic and completely and utterly useless in its sequel. She's here, she's still nice, but her role stops there. She doesn't help the story move forward and seems to be only of use as a love interest. The book might revolve around her but the story does not.

That being said, I still want to read the next book.

I seriously suck ass at catching up on reviews! I'm trying to redeem myself so I'm super happy that I'm finally typing up this one!

Heart of the Walker was so good!! I've been dying for two as soon as I finished the first book of this series! NOW I need the little novella.. then book three whenever Coralee wants to write that beautiful piece!

Ashleigh, or Ash, is still my favorite little walker. I love her character so freaking much! I basically ship her with all of the guys.. and I'm patiently waiting for them to just accept her love and give their love back. PATIENTLY WAITING GUYS.

So the Influenza X virus is still a hot topic in this book. I'm happy that this book definitely gave me some answers about this thing and how it was created in the first place. This book also gave me so many characters to hate or dislike. Jules and Josiah were annoying still and I also still don't like them. Nope, not even the end of this book made me like them. Maybe if they weren't such douches in the first book or for most of this book then maybe my opinion on them would've changed. However, they were annoying, whiny, and acted like little bitches when things didn't go their way. Sorry, definitely not sorry.

Then there are the guys. UGH! The guys! I kept getting all of these teasing moments and brief kisses with them and Ash. It was killing me. I want more! I want my huge ass ship to sail off into happiness! Is that so much to ask for?!?

Besides the romance, there was a ton of kidnapping in this book. I was so worried for all of them but then that damn epilogue gave me hope. I seriously need the next book because I need a reunion of them! I want to see if they are going to say what they want to say to Ash. I want to read her reaction. I just want a lot of smut too. Again, I don't think I'm asking for a lot here.

Overall, I loved this book so much. I need to dive into the novella right now!

Thank you Sharon J for recommending this series to me. This was an amazing read. The storyline was amazing and I really loved how the characters interacted with each other. Also, I thought the writing style was great. I wish there was more to the romance aspect of the story, but I know it will come soon because it is obvious the boys are falling in love with Ashleigh. Also, I really like Tallis and Mia. They were fantastic additions to the already established characters. I thought there was a bit more suspense. Also, I thought that the fact that we got to see more into Josiah’s mind was intriguing. The ending was great. I can’t wait to read book 3. Overall, an incredible read.

What makes this book enjoyable is the relationship Ash has with her guys, even when there is trouble they work through it. I hate books where most of the problems are from mis or non communication.

This book seemed to focus more on the main plot of the story than the relationship between Ash and the guys.

I will be reading the next book and I do hope the relationship picks up in the next book.

Heart of the Walker by Coralee June is book 2 in the Walker series and must be read in order. Heart starts right after Wings ended. Ash is back in Dormas with the guys (and Jules), still struggling with Josiah's betrayal and worried about the emperor. The first half of the book is the building relationships between Ash and each of the guys. I really loved the way June wrote it because it felt authentic. The way Ash and the guys get to know each other is much like a typical relationship-they spend time together and share information about their lives. Its all very normal (except for the fact there are 6 guys!).

The end of the book really amps up the danger and drama! Trust me, when you get to the last 75% or so, you will not be able to stop reading. I loved the way Jules steps up and I also really enjoyed Mia and her brother. I think all 3 of them brought a great vibe to story.

Heart ends just as a huge game changer is revealed and I am super excited to continue with the series and see how the guys and Ash handle this major development. If you like dystopian stories like the Hunger Games or Divergent, but wanted the heroine to have ALL the guys, The Walker series is perfect!

POV: 1st
Tears: no
Trope: reverse harem
Triggers: none
Series/Standalone: series
Cliffhanger:
HEA:

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Divergent by Veronica Roth, The Veil Diaries by BL Brunnemer...then you will probably like Heart of the Walker!

I liked this book but i felt like Ash was a storyteller more than a mc. I mean it felt like everyone else moved forward kind of and she was stuck in the same spot. Okay don't get me wrong, as i said i still liked this book and Ash. I usually don't like characters like Ash ( ya know not bold, does not swear and so on) but i enjoy reading bout Ash, even tho in this book she was more like the person she was in the first book from the beginning , like she didn't.. Omg it's so hard to explain this but Yeah...

i got so irritated at Huxley cuz of his hot n cold behaviour and in one moment he could be real cruel and then be nice... agh i understand that he has a dark past or something but still i can't like him yet, but i will probably do that later on in the series
My fave is Jacob and Cyler, Yaas!

Ashleigh it still trying to find her place in Dormas with her 6 potential boyfriends. Ashleigh has grown close to all the Dormas leaders (Cyler, Mav, Kemper, Jacob, Patrick and even the stoic Hux). Just because she realizes that she likes them, doesn't mean it is easy to figure out how it would work with all of them, especially since they all vowed that nothing (and no one) would ever come between them again.

The Influenza X virus is still a problem and there aren't enough vaccines to go around. The Dormas leadership, lead by Cyler, must start making alliances with the Scavenger communities if they are to protect themselves against the Emperor. Emperor Lackey is greedy and trying to do whatever he can to bring Dormas to kneel - kidnapping and killing people isn't a problem for him.

I am enthralled with this series. Is it spectacular - no, but I really like it anyway. There is just something about it that I can't quite put my finger on. Perhaps it is the "slow burn" romance? Anticipation can make you rather crazy with need, and I NEED to read the next book.

While the POV of Josiah is added its not more interesting. I feel like there was no real direction when these books were created and they are just trying to make something up that fits. Our female lead Ashleigh is still boring and bland with only a small amount of backbone added. I fell asleep with it on audio a few times and had to go back when i woke up but yeah... its not worth reading so i DNF at 70%. Im not invested in the characters at all so...yeah im done.

I'm not sure about this one. While I managed to get back into the story pretty quickly, and while I still found the writing to be rather good, overall I was left feeling a little..disconnected from what I was reading. I can't really put my finger on what exactly was it that left me feeling that way. It's just that, the majority of the story was progressing rather slowly and nothing was really going on. But when things finally started happening, they happened fast.
Also, I'm not entirely satisfied with the way the story concluded. I mean, I more or less like where the characters find themselves at the end, but I did not like the way they got there.
And I absolutely DO NOT want Ash to have any sorts of pleasant relationship with Josiah in the future. I don't really want him to be in the picture at all, to be honest. It's bad enough that we'll apparently have to get used to Jules now. There was actually a moment by the end where I thought that I might come to like Jules. But then she opened her mouth again and I was like "Nope, still hate her".
So, can we agree to keep one annoying character and get rid of the other one? Yes? Thanks.
And when will the relationship between Ash and the guy escalate to something more than sisterly fucking affection? We all know, hell even the characters know, that there are no sisterly feelings there. So when are we gonna act on that?

All in all, I more or less like the second book, but was left feeling extremely frustrated.

So like...I WANT to love this book and all other reverse harems. I keep popping RH books like candy. But veeeeery few of them ever live up to their potential.

This one is the same old...frequently reads like it was written by a middle schooler, started stronger but the MC descends into this woe is me persona that does nothing for me...I don’t even see why all these dudes are obsessed with her. She’s just blah. Typical submissive bullshit; she whispers when embarrassed and is “clumsy and adorable” (barf) to all the guys. There’s a whole little part about her getting undressed and getting stuck in her clothes that was so pathetic and contrived.

The plot here is so-so, kind of like a cut rate hunger games meets little house on the prairie meets walking dead. Which SOUNDS cool but isn’t executed well. There’s some forced interactions between characters that were so awkward and silly.

I will continue my quest for awesome RH with smart, strong characters...because this ain’t it.

Not a bad one

This one was a bit better than the previous book. A lot more emotions came into play and a lot more explanations also came into knowledge.

In this one the emperor seems to be everywhere, but it’s interesting what becomes knowledge to us throughout the book. We get a past glimpse of Josiah’s POV. He’s definitely an interesting character.

The ending was crazy though, but I kinda wish I could have seen how Ash did it all or if Ash even did it. They all assumed she did, but IDK how believable that is because she isn’t the most skilled person with things outside what she’s been taught.

I think the story is only going to get more interesting as we go, hopefully.

This series is so phenomenal!! I love the world June has created. Everything about this will suck you in, twist you up and leave you wanting. But all in the best ways possible. Ash is a girl that knew nothing outside of the slavery she was forced into as a young child. But she’s been rescued by an unlikely group that will either push her to greatness or destroy her completely. She’s growing and learning as she goes. Cliffhanger warning! But it’s so worth it!! MUST READ!

Unfortunately boring

Man guys idk, I just couldn't get into this one and I absolutely loved the first one. Ash, still as boring as ever, I thought we were making strives to get her strong and what not, I felt like this book was a huge step back. I did a lot of huffing and puffing hoping for more, but in the end I did a lot page skipping, and I didn't even miss anything vital. This book was just that freaking boring. I'm not sure if I want to finish this series, i guess I'll have to wait and see what the reviews say in the next installment, because I don't think I can take much more of this books blandness.

Ashleigh is trying to move on with her life. It has been one month since Josiah broke her heart for what she promised herself was the last time. Ash has started her job in the bakery, she is growing closer to the guys, Maverick, Cyler, Jacob, Huxley, Patrick and Kemper. They are each starting to let her know how they feel about her. She is happy in Dormas, even if she has to spend most of her time staying away from Jules, unless she is rescuing Jacob from her. But danger is still around, and Cyler and the guys are trying to even the odds against Emperor Lackley. They are searching for help through any means necessary. Ash has heard all about the deadly scavengers, but things are not always what they seem. That the heart can still love someone even though they betrayed you. But with help of six certain guys, Ash is moving on with her life. They have become her family, and there is nothing she won't do for them.

Wings of the Walker blew me away, I loved it. Ms. June has stepped up her game with Heart of the Walker. No matter how hard Ashleigh tries to move on, she can't help seem to get over Josiah. Or so she thinks, her heart still feels something for him. Her head keeps telling her he betrayed her, but he still owns a small piece of her heart. She is finally fitting in with her makeshift family, and even has a job The guys all do what they can to make her happy and keep her safe. There are new friends to be made, allies to help in the war against Emperor Lackley. And can I say that by the end I really hated Lackley. He needs to be killed off in a horrible manor, hint, hint.
The guys, we get to learn more about their history. I really enjoyed hearing about their pasts and it draws Ash closer to them. Even Hux, he is still a jerk at times but he is starting to thaw and maybe show her a glimpse of the man underneath. The ending was epic! Lots of action, strength shown, allies revealed, and determination to protect the ones they love. There is a cliffhanger, but it sets it up book three perfectly. Overall, this series just gets better and better.

So much as changed in Ashleigh's life. She's no longer a servant to the Stonewell Household, she's a free woman in Dormas. Free to live life as she wants, free to love. She lives in Black Manor with the 6 councilmen Maverick, Cyler, Jacob, Huxley, Patrick, and Kemper. She has a job at the bakery and she's drawing and painting again. Josiah has shown his character, betrayed her and by doing so, freed her heart to move on. However, now that Emperor Lackley has set his sights on the riches of Dormas and has shown he's willing to do anything, including harming Ash to control its leaders, it's clear that war is coming.

This is a wonderful continuation of The Walker Series. Ash is continuing to find her voice and become a stronger person. The men are all beginning to make it clear what she means to them, individually and as a group. This development is still a little frustrating since there wasn't enough communication. It seemed as if there would be a move in the right direction but nothing would ever play out. Yes, I am impatient. I did enjoy the special moments. The new characters, the Scavengers are fantastic. Mia and Tallis bring strength, wildness, and a sense of uncontrollable action to the story. Tallis even manages to make Jules interesting. I realize that I'm supposed to be more sympathetic to her now but her circumstances still don't change her behavior. Her immaturity, pettiness, and general nasty demeanor need adjusting.

The political story again captured my interest. It moves forward more naturally and with more intensity than the RH portion of the storyline. Emperor Lackley is horrid! Josiah is weak! Together they make a dangerous opponent. That ending. I don't know what to think. Good? Bad? Better? Worse? I'm concerned. With the Council, the Scavengers, and their secret weapons, one brat and a walker I think everything will turn out okay, but there will be a price to pay. I look forward to reading more.

Heart of the Walker, book 2 of the Walker series, was just as good if not better than Wings of the Walker!
In this book Ash is still trying to come to terms with Josiah's betrayal as well as her growing feelings for the guys. She takes up her position at the bakery in town and is doing a good job at acclimating to her life in her new Providence.
This book was a little different than the first in that it included a few chapters that were flash backs from Josiah's point of view. This was crazy because at one point I started to sympathize with him, and at another I was thinking wow he's a sociopath. In the end I think I just ended up feeling bad for him because he seems to make all the wrong choices.
Ash also grows a lot closer to the guys in this book! Its still a slow burn, but there's definitely a little heat in this one :) Huxley is still a bit of a grump but Ash still can't but help feeling something for him. She's still conflicted because she's spent most of her life in love with Josiah, but can't deny how the guys make her feel.
But then Emperor Lackley steps in again and just ruins everything.. something he's just great at. We learn more about Influenza X and the spreading infection. We also learn why Lackley is getting involved with Josiah and Cyler's lives (not the good kind of involved). Something really needs to be done about him!
I NEED book 3 immediately because wow Coralee just seems to get better and better with each book and I gotta know what happens next!!

Highly anticipated sequel, at least for me it was.

It's been a few weeks since Ash was betrayed by her former owner and love of her life.
Overcoming the heartbreak, she sets her focus on baking and making the most of her life in Dormas.
It's rather easy with six guys vying for her attention.

I'm so happy to see this series continued.

This book wasn't filled with much action, but more of how their lives have been changing slowing since Ash arrived.

We see Ash growing into her potential.
Reflecting on her feelings of Josiah and the life she had always pictured with him.
And her growing attraction to the new men in her life.
Ones she isn't quite sure what to do with.

I felt we got a lot of background information.
On Influenza X.
About Josiah.
Even a look into the lives of the guys a bit.

It does end on a slight cliffhanger.
So you with have withdrawals once again waiting for book three to release.

It's told mainly from Ash' point of view.
However, you do get a few chapters from Josiah in the past.
And the epilogue is told in an extra point of view (I won't give away who).

I just really enjoyed it.
I love Coralee's writing style.
I feel like everything is very well planned out and goes at a steady pace.

If you haven't picked up this series yet, do it.
You will not be disappointed.
Well, maybe a little, but that's just because there isn't more out there for you to read.
I highly recommend it.

Unfortunately, the series became boring. I feel like the story is being told instead of being described. The Characters are flat and honestly at this point its hard to tell the romantic interests apart. I really wanted to like this story and I honestly tried to get through it, but there isn't enough substance for me to care about the world or characters. DNF at 55%

Romance is a slow burn with some groping and kissing.

Ashleigh
-I don't know if I missed her description the first time through, but she has messy hair and hazel eyes. I don't recall the author describing her beyond that.
-She has more of a back bone in this one. You go girl.

Secondary characters
-Tallis and Mia are a tribe of "Savages" out in no man's land.
-Jules Black is such a terrible person and I don't know why the boy's don't kick her out of their house sooner. Send her to the mines or to prison. That woman is toxic.
-Mystery Walker baby

Josiah Stonewell(Villian/ Possible love interest)
-Misses the Heroine

NOTE: all the guys just blur together for me and I don't find myself invested in any of the characters. Seriously, you could replace the guys with another character and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference most of the time.

Cyler Black

Patrick

Heart of the Walker

Where do I start professing my love over this book. I admit that I was stand-offish before picking up a book by Coralee June. Recommendations mentioned the abundance of feelings and I am generally afraid of reading something that could make me feel too sad. Sad books tend to leave me in tears and I try to prevent that as much as I can. But I was curious and decided to pick up this series. My fear was unnecessary, well... To a certain extent at least. The writing is amazing, the storyline has a natural flow and nothing feels out of place. Heart of the Walker picks up where Wings of the Walker left off. Ash is getting to know the guys better and their relationship grows carefully. I love all the characters and yes, even Josiah and Jules at this point. I feel there is a lot more to them that meets the eye. We learn more about the machinations of emperor Lackley, who has gone overboard in his search for power. I hope that Ash gets her HEA with her guys in the end, because at the moment, my love for them is seriously making me want to throw my kindle across the room when they are in danger. 😂

Coralee June, you managed to blow me away!

5 stars because it's just that good. (And I do not award them lightly.)

I was really looking forward to watching Ash grow into more of her own, having deliberately made the choice of freedom over her former love. Unfortunately, it seems her own is bland and amenable.

My big problem with this book is her relationship with other women. I loved the introduction of Mia, but bringing Jules back and painting her in a half-antagonist, half-tragic heroine light, really did not work for me. Not only is her sniping with Ash petty and immature, I can't overlook that she falsely accused Jacob of rape because of feelings of rejection. That's wildly immoral and no amount of sad backstory will change the fact that she needs some therapy, not whatever her weird role in Dormas is developing into. Plus Ash isn't able to connect with other Walker women because...? Why? They enjoy the male attention they're getting? Give me a break. That attitude is verging on some seriously hypocritical slut-shaming nonsense. Ash is in the same kind of position, enjoying the attention of several men, but it's okay because she's hesitant about it, and they're the dreamy town leaders.

Nevertheless, I'm probably going to grab book 3 from Kindle Unlimited in the hopes that now that everyone is making their feelings clear, things can finally heat up a bit.

Holy Tahoe each installment has me clinging to the story like it’s a new drug I can’t get enough of. Book two had a little bit of a slow start, but that was to be expected with how things ended in book one.

I’m not gonna talk too much about the characterization of the Dormas men since I touched on them quite a bit in my review for book one. You definitely see not only the men continue to grow as individuals, but you also see them grow as a family unit and in their relationship with Ash. There were so many moments they had that tugged at my heart strings. Just to name a few: Ash’s birthday (swoon), painting the school (ahhh), taking care of the baby (awe), and the little individual moments like with Cyler at the treehouse and the twins at the bakery (sigh)

My favorite scene in the book is hands down is the scene where Ash confronts Jo on the tablet about Cyler and Patrick. That’s the moment she finally stands up for herself against him and admits her feelings for the guys. That last speech she gave before hanging up gave me chills and I’ve read it 5x and it still gives me chills every time. In that moment you see just how pure and loving Ash’s heart is.

I love this series!

This is the perfect example of a slow burn RH romance because it allows the characters and the story to build. The characters have their own personalities with each other and within the group dynamic. I like how the main female lead Ashley is slowly growing and developing. She’s finding her voice and what she likes and wants to do in life. The guys support her in their own ways and it’s Fascinating to read how they’re all developing a relationship with Ash but trying to maintain their relationships with each other too.

Characters- fantastic growth and development

World building/setting: descriptive and interesting

Writing style/ pace: perfect

Rh factor: slow slow burn

Recommend - yes
Reread - yes

I dug right into the book as soon as I finished listening to book one. It wasnt as intriguing as the first but to me in the beginning but all that changed about 50% in and no.. I will say it had more romance involved and alot more drama towards the end. CoraLee is great at making you hate a character and then starting to feel soft for them..That is kind of how I feel about Jules...for now..I am anxious to see how she is going to act in the next book. Now that I think about it, for a book that isnt that long, there were alot of memorable moments..Ash having her first bday party..Ash standing up to Josiah..Ash saving that baby..Huxley growing closer and not behaving so assholeish to her. Ash getting kissed (FINALLY)..Finding out the Emperor caused the virus..The boys being held captive and getting out..GAH SO MUCH STUFF HAPPENED!!

Not as good as the first

*ATTENTION* Spoilers ahead

With the introduction of emperorLackley, typed this way about 90% of the time (Emperor Lackley, and emperor Lackley the other times), we get a deeper sense of what is going on with the empire and Josiah. I don't know yet if Josiah will end up part of her harem, and I plan on continuing to find out, but Jules and Ashleigh are inconsistent and are given way to much credit. "She got us an army." No... I think Tallis did that. "We need to get this out to the world," says Tallis, "and Jules will send the message." "Fine, so now what?" asks Jules in her usual temperamental tone. "Now we tell the world," says Ashleigh in a determined tone. No lie, that's basically what happens.
I did enjoy the twist, and the plot is becoming increasingly intense. Characters are becoming muddled, also.

More bored as time goes on

The first book was OK. I liked it enough to continue with the 2nd book. I had a really hard time getting through this 2nd book. It honestly bored me to tears.

I felt like the connections between ash and her men were forced in a way. I didn't feel like we saw her with them enough for her to love them like she supposedly did. And how could we, when there is six of them to sift through. And they all seemed to have the same vague personalities except hux who was the quintessential broody, angry, distant guy.

I feel like everything in this book just didn't flow well for me at all really. I just couldn't connect with these characters. Which is a shame, because all the other books I've read by this author I've loved.

I probably won't finish this series, because I just don't care enough to see how it ends.

I loved the idea behind this series. It is a pretty unique reverse harem with a lot of tropes that I like. Two of the guys are kind of bullies in the beginning, a stalker like ex, alpha males that are super protective, a damaged fmc that has been through the wringer...

Unfortunately I didn't finish the series because it got really repetitive. The harem would get split up, their enemies seemed to have far too much control over them so they literally never win... I skipped to the end of book three because I was curious and it was literally the same as what happened before. On top of that, there are such obvious feelings being developed by the harem and the reasons for not acting on them seemed silly. The angst wasn't very angsty it was more annoying to be honest.

Slow Burn but worth it!

When CoraLee said this series was a slow burn, she wasn’t kidding! I’m not sure I can take another book with so much sexual tension haha, but luckily the characters are finally starting to acknowledge their true feelings.

I really adore Ash’s character, her morals, her concerns, her big heart. No wonder everyone falls in love with her. I’m also excited to explore Jule’s character in the novella coming up. We got more of a taste of her character in this book and it’s much deeper than I originally thought.

On top of all that goodness, there is this interesting struggle going on with the Empire over the fate of...well, everyone at this point. A horrible discovery is made, that basically means doom for all!....it’s just GOOD y’all, read it!

While we saw a lot of political fluffing between Galla and Dormas in book one (Wings of the Walker (The Walker Series Book 1)), this time we got to read about the real action and see the beginning of the fight for total freedom. Really loving the way Coralee June tells her story, with a FMC who has wit but is still learning about the world and a group of guys all eager to do the best they can (even if they do manage to not quite be honest with Ashleigh). I love that unlike the first book, in Heart of the Walker we get to see snippets into the past of one of the characters lives, which leaves the reader with more questions furthering the addictive reading. I cannot wait to see just where we go with Fight of the Walker (The Walker Series Book 3)
