Magic and Steam Age technology collide in a kingdom wracked by feuding nobles.
A young man is about to achieve his life-long goal of joining the Guild of Mechanists, when he is discovered to have the potential to become a wizard. Forced to attend the Academy of Wizards against his will, he strives to find some way to make his life useful and help the common man in a school whose professors are obsessed with combat magic and training for battle.
Throughout his education looms the threat of graduation, upon which each wizard is expected to sacrifice ten years in service to the King. A service contract that is often sold to his feuding barons, whose pasttimes include highly staged battles in which the wizards are the primary casualty. To avoid that fate, the young man will strive to chart a new course, spawning chaos and rebellion in his wake, as his inventions and innovations herald the arrival of a new Age of Steam.
