The runaway’s story comes to the fore, and it’s far more than anyone suspected. A frontier world. One Sheriff. And all the action one Spaceport can't hold. SagCon’s Special Investigator gets comfortable plying the Mother Lode, but he didn’t come alone. Sparks fly when a second SI shows up, one from the sheriff’s sordid past.
Does the runaway’s grandfather want to protect her, or prune her from the family tree? Why is the second SI in town? How far would you go for your family? Fans of Firefly, Bonanza, and Tombstone will love this space opera / western and all the characters that make the story great. Join us on the latest journey through Darklanding.
Scott Moon loves audio books, especially the works of George R.R. Martin, Patrick O'Brian, and Michael Connelly. He has been writing fantasy, science fiction, and urban fantasy thrillers most of his life and aims to read or listen to 100 books a year. Currently, he is a commissioned police officer serving in a street level counter drug and gang unit. Some of his most rewarding and heartbreaking work was as a detective in the Exploited Missing Child Unit. His favorite assignment is SWAT, primarily for the eighty pounds of tactical gear he gets to wear in the blazing summer heat. In 2005, he helped arrest a serial killer who had been at large for over thirty years.

Wow! This is getting better and better! The momentum is overflowing and fun. Just when you think a mystery is solved there comes a twist to the story and the turn overbalances you, lol. I love the runaway’s grandpa. I hope these fantastic authors bring him back to Darklanding, I’m so curious about his secret travel concepts! Hmm, so is Maximus, the sheriff’s strange pet, where does he come from? Is it native to Ungloks’ planet? Don’t think so.
This series has turned into a fun time for me. With a mix of action, politics, alien mysteries and even humor, I have found it delightful. It’s a cross between a sci-fi and a western with a sheriff and his alien deputy trying to make sense of, and keep control of, a backwater shanty town built around a mining corporation that ships a valuable and rare mineral through interstellar space. This particular episode, in this series of novellas, added many colorful characters, some good and some villainous. It all makes for a good time, a very good read. As a side note, my favorite character is a pig-dog thing that Sheriff Thad calls Maximus and likes to lick itself and can fart on demand it seems. It’s also more intelligent than anyone gives it credit for. I say “it” because I still don’t know 100% if it’s a female or male, but that really doesn’t matter. With a name like Maximus, I’m leaning on it being a male, but what does Thad know. He doesn’t even know what Maximus really is. I do hope nothing bad ever happens to Maximus and if the author is reading this then the same goes for Mast, the deputy. Mast’s vision quest leaves a lot a questions, but that’s a good thing. The first four novellas have laid a firm foundation on which the reader can visualize Darklanding, where this entire debacle takes place and I say that in a good way. If you liked Firefly then you’ll certainly like this Darklanding series of novellas. I for one can’t wait for the next installment. Five stars all the way! Sincerely, Alan McDonald
To review this book we have to jump back to the last book to find a huge mistake no author should ever miss. In the last book White Skull had his hand shot off when he was captured by Thaddeus. Skip ahead to this book and he has both hands and it is pointed out repeatedly throughout the book. Just how do you make such a mistake? You're the author, you wrote the last book, which was a complete mess btw.
This installment flowed better, still had glaring editing issues along with the problems already mentioned. It moved the story along but was still shallow and disjointed. Things pointed to in earlier books are still not resolved or even mentioned. Not as bad as the last book and at least Thaddeus and Maximus are around for more adventures even if the author can't keep the continuity correct.
To include a little lonesome dove, a dash of Alien Cowboy with a twist of Westworld. I LOVE Grandfather! He may be parts of who you mentioned Scott, but I would add Nikola Tesla and our present reincarnation of him, Elan Musk....with Dr. Who ( David tennet version).
I love everything about this series, in a way, Ruby reminds me of a similar free spirited, tough, young lady, Sam in another Universe ...That's Seppukarian....right Sgt. Craig?????? You know the one in which you told stories of evil aliens in the Kurtherian Universe? Crazy Marines.....This is right up my alley, Craig; PAWSOME! Feline Overlord Approved!...This message approved by Sehkmet.....
He's got a madman on the loose, who is trying to stir revolt among the miners, while trying to steal all of the exotic rocks, brought out of the mines.
He also has his first ex wife hanging around, as she looks for a runaway who is determined to stay free.
His deputy has just got back from a spirit quest, and has found a spaceship eons old - and all Thad wants, is for the leader of the White Skull gang to just give himself up, before Thad has to shoot him.
This book was a great follow-on to the previous ones, and I'm really curious as to what's going to happen next, in the lives of everyone around him.
An exciting adventure in Darklanding universe with all the characters and we meet the Sheriff’s ex-wife #1 and his deputy goes on a vision quest we meet new people who are interesting and are introduced to another town.
One plot arc ends, and the Darklanding 'verse expands outward. While a bit slower than previous episodes, payoff comes with new characters and revelations. Recommended!
I was hoping that Ruby got to stay, oh well. I hope they can keep Stacy locked up cause if he escapes, they are going to need a new Sheriff. Excellent, I am on to the next episode.
Episode four of life on a remote mining outpost, see's Sheriff Fry have his make shift jail stolen, an exwife arrive and the mysterious grandfather make an appearance. They maybe short reads, but are enjoyable with good characters.
