I know what you're thinking; I am oh so very biased. The Chronicles of Midnight holds my ultimate favorite combo; Reverse Harem + Urban Fantasy -and it's very hard to find faults with it. But seriously, it's so fucking good and book 3 is the best book of the series so far.

Secrets of Midnight is full of action, mystery and many feels. The characters are growing both as friends and as family, we're getting to know Rivers and Orin and it's a full roller coaster ride of emotions. I'm talking butterflies in stomach, anxiety and heart beating fast. And if you like the same stuff as me and haven't checked this out yet, what are you waiting for?

Thousands thanks to Debbie Cassidy for providing me this ARC.

Yes! Finally some action between the other characters, I was almost worried after the first 2 books, is this a reverse harem or what.

I loved it, it's honestly getting better and better. I don't hate any single character, I feel like Debbie Cassidy has some freaking bliss flowing through this book.

I've already pre-ordered books 4 and 5 and I can't wait.

whose ass do I have to kiss to get a arc cos I need me some Bane, Ryker, River, Dayton, Orin and Serenity.

Overall, this was the best installment in the CHRONICLES OF MIDNIGHT series. The story, the revelations, the character knowledge, and to some extent the relationships all developed considerably in SECRETS OF MIDNIGHT. The tension ramped up throughout, and the story was pretty compelling. Added layers of complexity were added to an already intricate world. It remains to be seen whether Debbie Cassidy can tie all these narrative threads together satisfactorily. It is an awfully big task she has set herself.

But for the most part, I enjoyed the book. The story and the suspense gripped me tightly and I found I didn't want to put it down. That was a first in this series. And the MC, Serenity, grew up just enough that I only wished her dead a couple of times. (Though she was still plenty irritating in several scenes.)

I was fairly happy with the progression in the relationships. Or maybe I should say that I was glad there was forward progress, but the manner of that progress was rather unsatisfying. It was far too abrupt in a way that didn't quite make sense.

With Bane, there was a logic - one that had been foreshadowed for quite a while. So I understood it, even if I wasn't thrilled about it. But then, when time could have been spent showing the development of their relationship past the its unsatisfying beginning, it was all off camera. Bah!

And with Rivers, the transition was so abrupt it hardly made sense. It went from a distant sort of friendship/teammate that occasionally allowed for feeding through a touch on the arm to dominant sexual contact? Uh... okaaaay.

Then we went from everyone just being friends - other than Drayton, who could never actually be with her - to suddenly everyone wants her? (Including Orin, who had been portrayed as head-over-heels for Cassie. Huh?)

There were also a few continuity issues and breaks in logic. For example:

I also felt the whole White Wings bit in Dawn was under-developed and anticlimactic. I can see no viable purpose for that addition to the story as it stands. I would rather it was either developed more fully in some way that felt meaningful, or it was eliminated entirely in favor of further development in some of the abrupt areas elsewhere in the story. (Relationship building, perhaps?)

All in all, though, this third book was a pretty enjoyable read. And I am really liking nearly all of the male love interests. Bane, Rivers, Ryker, Orin (he better be!), and Drayton (he better be! LOL) each have a unique role to play in Serenity's life, and it is starting to finally come together and make sense. I hope a bit more time is spent on this in Book 4, however, because Serenity is still acting like a prudish twit (and absurdly naive in a way that just doesn't fit her character) about the whole relationship thing.

This series just may be salvageable! Yay :)

UPDATE PROGRESS NOTES:
91.0% "LMAO! OMFG... even the author admits it: "Oh, God. I was such a fucking twit. The revelation sent a fresh surge of adrenaline coursing through my body." Too too funny."

89.0% "No, don't be a fool, Serenity. 1) you can't trust beings that sacrifice thousands to achieve their goals, 2) all winged? that is likely to also include all nephs, 3) DON'T BE STUPID!"

83.0% "Argh! So stupid! You know these things are hiding. You don't trust the Order. And yet you don't make checking them the very first thing you do? GAH! Dumb dumb dumb..."

58.0% "Aaaaannnnd... Serenity is back to being a judgmental twit. Progress didn't last long, did it?"

57.0% "Uh, boots? She is wearing boots now? I thought she had on ballet flats with the dress? Continuity issue here."

57.0% "Uh...how the hell have they hidden the dagger tatts? I still haven't seen any discussion or thought about needing to do that. Though clearly that would be an issue."

54.0% "ARGH! You fool, you are STILL not embracing who you are. Just own it already, would you? All the angst is getting old really fuggin' fast."

51.0% "Uh...WTF?! This is a rather abrupt shift. Sexy as hell, sure, but kinda out of left field. Not a great transition."

49.0% "Wow. This new plot twist makes ZERO sense. What about Serenity's dagger tatts and keeping all that hidden? Just a few weeks ago the Black Wings were kidnapping her to hide all this from the White Wings. Forget just what this might do to her daimon, but the risk with the White Wings? NO LOGIC, I tell you..."

37.0% "Well, that was a surprise! In a series that, so far, has had precious few. Can't say it was a good surprise, but admirable all the same. Wonder why I didn't see it coming?"

31.0% "Your daimon just told you what Ambrosius said, Serenity, and yet you still aren't communicating that all to Bane, you twit? GAH!"

25.0% "I really don't trust Cassie. I feel like she is here for some nefarious purpose."

12.0% "Oh this is probably going to bite them in the ass. Cassie knows all their secrets and she is just selfish enough that she will want revenge."

9.0% "Really, Serenity needs to learn a little something about impulse control. She is a frackin' loose cannon."

2.0% "She's you, version 2.0 Serenity. About time you get some of your own idiocy dropped back on your head."

No spoilers and colorful language abound! Read with Kindle Unlimted.

Didn't love this installment, some of the more impulsive aspects of the MC, which were originally charming, got on my nerves. Its RH Lite, and I would have expected a bit more of that dynamic to ave been explored by end of book 3. Ready for the next one!

He's not really dead, maybe...I hope!

Another chapter in the magnificent world of Arcadia! Though each book so far has been really short, it still seems like this is the slowest burn RH ever... but not to worry because slowly all the relationships are building up and becoming stronger.

So glad Cassie wasn't really an evil cvnt. Even more glad there is a chance Drayton is alive in there. Maybe she can exorcise his shade or whatever like she did for Cassie.

I was hoping we would get to see how the FMC's sister was doing in Dawn, but I guess not.

Also, I really wish these books were longer and more detailed with character descriptions and such. I like all the characters and I am so glad she won't have to choose between them. I just wonder how that will work out with Cassie since I am totally hoping Orin gets in. It's so true what whomever it was that said there are more intimate moments than just having sex.

Anyway! Off to read the next book!

The series just gets better and better. Cassie’s relationships with her team has gathered depth, and increased the complexity of both those relationships and the characters as a whole.

Understanding of Dawn and the White Wings is covered in this novel and creates a great juxtaposition with Midnight and what it represents. Some of the issues that were previously somewhat nebulous become illuminated with enough questions to gain momentum towards the next novel.

Now we’re getting into it. The relationships are popping out of the woodwork, no longer subtle. Not sure how I feel about Cassie and Orin. Took a break at halfway because I was hoping things wouldn’t go in the direction I thought. They did which I have mixed feelings about. Enjoyed it but it feels like Serenity is getting a little over confident, so we’ll see if she makes any mistakes. Two more to go.

I swear, these books just keep getting better and better.
We actually got to see Dawn from the inside in this one, albeit briefly but still! It finally feels as though the whole relationship business is getting somewhere and I cannot wait to see the characters together at last! They are already throwing some serious chemistry around and they are not even together yet! I mean, damn. And I still cannot get a full grasp on the characters' personalities, the fact that I really like for some twisted reason.
Plus, the plot is moving along nicely.
“I just have this feeling that everything is about to change, that we’re moving toward a conclusion that is also a beginning.”
We are starting to get closer and closer to the truth and I both cannot wait and am dreading it a little - dreading, cause I really do not want for this story to end.
I know that the next book will be out in just a few weeks, but the wait is going to be unbearable. I just need to know everything!

Great book! We are finally getting some answers! Lots of backstabbing and intrigue and new enemies. Maybe even new allies.

There is definitely alot going on with this plot and the side quests seem to lead us off and astray at times however I think we are going to blow the lid off of everything. Once again Serenity is struggling with her humanity and her daemon needs. I love all the Protectorate all so different personality wise. I like the chemistry between them all I think the author did a great job of giving us actual realistic relationship material and not insta-love.

Serenity has brought the veil down, and some ancient enemies who we do not have any backstory on have infiltrated midnight. What will these new weapons entail for her and her crew? And what about the mysterious disappearances of God and lucifer? How will that play into the story. Now that the veil is gone is the world open once again? How did the world get this way to begin with! Please Please let there be answers in the upcoming books.

Spoilers

This is the third book in the series and it's still going strong. Quite a bit goes on in the book. It starts out a few weeks after serenity defeated the wild hunt and saved unwilling humans from the vampires. The main story arc of this book revolves around shades that have taken over bodies; the rippers and the breed have been working together in hopes to release the dark ancient power from beyond the veil. We find out who\what Ambrosius is and in the end, exactly what serenity is in the grand scheme of things. Smaller stories in the book have us seeing Dawn and flooding into that life as well as learning more about the order. Serenity begins to see that her cambion nature won't allow her to love it desire just one man and that's thanks to lilith whom serenity won't allow to have sex w Bane any longer- you can guess who books up in the book! Bane is still my favorite male and I'm still super intrigued by him and now Rivers because I find their powers and sexuality most interesting; hopefully more on them in the next book! We are starting to see the love, loyalty, and possessiveness that usually comes in reverse harem stories but it isn't overwhelming or instant.
there is sex and cussing with plenty of things going on!

Serenity and the Protectorate get more clues on what is going on in Arcadia, but that is not enough to stop the new threat. She'll need to figure out exactly who and what she is. Moreover, her feelings for the team are developing, but it's not easy as some of the men are still closed off, and two people from her life come back.

It was full of action, with not a moment of peace. I'm really curious to see with whom Serenity ends up among the men she started to have feelings for.

I’ve literally been waiting forever (till book 3) for serenity to finally get some. The plot is still great I’m still interested in reading the series, but I’m kinda sick of her not giving into her true nature. This is seriously the slowest burning romance ever and I’m kinda getting a little sick of it.

Secrets of Midnight was much better in pacing as compared to the previous book. There was still some inconsistency but not as obvious to feel like it's hastily put together.

The plot has come to a fascinating point where things are being set up for the end conflict of this series. I'm glad to see something more than just the white wings vs black wings agenda, the veil adds complexity to something simple. The relationships are even taken seriously instead of just skittering around the subject. The relationship with Bane felt natural in contrast to the one with Rivers, it just sort of started out of nowhere. It didn't have a good built up unlike Bane or even Ryker, though the latter one feels always so lacking chemistry wise as if Ryker and Serenity are really just BFFs rather than something more.
As with the previous book I found the different location scenes rushed. I thought Dawn was going to be a prominent location for a few chapters at least but it was wrapped up so fast, I honestly didn't get the point of solving that case in Dawn and how it added up to the major plot-line because it didn't tie up in this book at least.

The end was definitely intriguing enough with things seemingly coming together albeit a bit rushed. For being halfway towards the conclusion, I feel the third book is a good balance of continuing the plot and finally getting the relationships progressing.

This is going badly.. I feel it! I want to know what’s going to happen next and how this is going to end, but I’m not sure if it’s gonna be worth my time.

The first series I read by Debbie Cassidy was the "Chronicles of Arcana" and I remember that I started out liking it but by the end I stopped enjoying both story and characters. In short the last book was a complete disappointment.

So far in this series each book is weaker than its predecessor. I hope this won’t turn into a theme cause I’ve already started another series by this author...

One more thing! I think that slow burn RH books usually work best for me but both of these two series failed to deliver in the romance department. All the relationships feel forced (some more than others) and EXTREMELY uneven.

A group of humans want to be able to protect themselves and become their own force, not simply waiting the ones in charge of their protection arrive on time to save them.

That's when Bane, Serenity and the Protectorate come into play.

They know they need more people helping fight back the scourge, so they backed up the humans' petition.

Now, they have to train them.

And the help comes right in time.

A new treat is here.

Something never seen before.

Anyone could be compromised.

And Serenity is the only one with the power to free them.

Problems just seem to pile up and the last thing the Protectorate needs is discord between the team.

***

Notes:

🔸Story sequence

This book starts right where the last one stopped.

A bit on the short side and the plot is quite fast.

I am still waiting for a deeper connection to the characters.

But a nice read overall.

🔸 Groups:

- Humans: used to deal with the scourge, but some, afraid and wanting security, aligned themselves to a house (Sanguinata or Lupin) signing a binding contract to belong to them.

- Black Wings: +- fallen angel, powerful, distant, only seen from afar.

- Nephs: descendants from Black Wings and humans, have powers

- Protectorate: powerful Nephs, the last line of defense against the monsters.

- Midnight Enforcement Department: the human police in Midnight

- Scourge: group of rippers that usually attack the district once a month, hunting humans

- The Sanguinata: +- vampires, aka the house of Vitae

- The Lupin: +- werewolves, aka the house of Mort

- The order of Merlin: humans with magic(?)

- The Breed: +-beastly shifters(?) full of rage and wild

🔸Romance

Still several potential love interests, each with their own story and personality.

Some are getting closer and clearer, but the relationships are on the slow side.

I do have to say, out of all the probable RH members, the one that gives me more reserves is the one everyone seems to adore.
I mean I get it, he is sweet. But I really don't like when a character is divided between the MC and another love interest. This can create so much angst. Especially when they love one but force themselves into having a relationship with another. It really is something I hate.
On the plus side, it didn't hurt to read because this whole series doesn't seem big on ansgt nor prolonged suffering and the emotional connection does lack a bit.
(obviously this is not counting romances when there is no major angst because they end up with both)

🔸FMC

Serenity is the champion of humanity, of free will, of doing what is right despite the status quo.

She is and she fights for everything they all have forgotten.

And it is getting a bit of too much of the special one vibe.

***

As always my complete respect for the author and their work.
No hate nor hurt intended with this review.

Better

Still a lot of plots going on. Not sure if I like that and kind of maybe seeing some connections . I guess I'm saying the book is busy. I still don't like Cassie .She's not good. She's bad for the group as a whole and very bad for Or.
Not sure WHY everyone is fighting the harem ..at least some of the guys and she is. And I do hate the way the white wings have a harem and don't care about them. How anyone can't see that if you take the drug effect away more than half the humans would probably leave .Got to be a small being to drug people into compliance to keep them. I'm guessing that the white wings are jealous of human free will and are turning it into an abomination that serves there sense of righteousness. Yes writer turned the roles in this one to white not so good and black not so bad. As the white with striping free will away being the true monsters. But black side not so far from being same way . Factions signing contracts with humans and finding loopholes so they can be abusive to them anyway allowing the sups to ignore the suffering as stupid humans should have known they were going to get f####d so they can wash their hands of responsibility, human cops the only help ,that's not that much help and sups supposed to be protecting buy not really they just kind of say " we leash the monsters a little what more you want? " .
Meanwhile the humans truly fall through the crack being put between a rock and a hard place would be to generous.
Then finding out that its a designs game or bet between the angels that have different opinions on what God ment about human and both really a self serving reason for wanting to be right. White just basically want all the perks if sexualized slavery with no consequences of having to actually deal with consent because they drugging humans into yes slaves. And black .,well they seem to like to have their fun as well but are acting as if they are " saving " humans free will all while allowing very bad things to happen in name of free will but somehow honor bound to keep mouth shut. 😐
Then the outside force coming into play ,still not sure about that yet. She's got Bane away from liilth ,but still I fear the rape is going to be brushed under the rug. Others well ,Cassie back and pretty jealous ,A leopard can't change their spots and she's just as ugly even tho then thing inside her is gone. She gonna play on the " doing the right thing" till the end . Meaning everyone else do right while I be jealous selfish thing.
So book four will take us in the direction of maybe adding more guys and the outside Asher and all it entitles and more on D And if he is truly dead or can be brought back. Three more books so I'm guessing a lot will be packed into each book . Might need a break 😕

Secrets of Midnight starts off with a district council meeting voting to allow humans to form a Protectorate. Headed by Ava, one of the humans that Serenity helped to free, they just want a chance to protect and defend themselves instead of relying on the others. With Serenity's help and well as a reluctant Bane, it passes. So now the crew gets to train the humans. But a new enemy is lurking in the background. Something old and deadly. And it is up to Serenity and her group to find out who is behind the deadly attacks happening. Lives will be lost, secrets revealed, bonds strengthened, choices made, shocking reveals, and hell to pay.

Serenity Harker is back. I cannot say enough good things about this series. I freaking love it!! Books one and two drew me into this series, and I did not think it could get better. But it has! Secrets of Midnight has amped up the action, edge of your seat suspense, and just the right amount of romance. You see her harem starting to form, and I am so excited to see how they start to evolve into what she needs. Serenity herself is becoming more powerful, understanding her powers and what she needs. She has become one of my favorite of all time. Her relationship with the group is growing as well. They are learning to work together and trust that they have their backs. Bane is only getting hotter in my opinion. And I am happy to report that their relationship takes a good turn, loved seeing his softer side with her. The boys roles are starting to be revealed as well as their relationship with Serenity. More of Ryker, Rivers and Odin is always a good thing. I am not really feeling Cassie at all, and there is some drama in this book with her. I wish she would go away but understand she has a role to play. New secrets come to light, foes to fight, relationships to grow (wishing one to stop) and an ending that will leave you needing more. Secrets of Midnight is a must read, and I would recommend reading the series in order.

And the fun continues!

Once again, The Chronicles of Midnight series delivered another fast-paced book, with plenty of stuff crammed in and a bit of a cliffhanger to build suspense for the next installment.

The Protectorate added a human faction to its ranks headed by Ava, the human Serenity had rescued last book. Plus there was an invasion of an ancient race of dark somethings possessing people and using them like meat puppets; an undercover OP in Dawn to root out a murderer; Samhain, ghosts, and talks about the veils between worlds, and lots of bases being run with a couple of the guys—including the first home run of the series!

But hanky-panky aside, this book explored Serenity's challenges in balancing her human inclination—which stipulated romantic relationships having to be monogamous—with her cambion nature and needs. She felt significant guilt over her feelings and desire to connect with multiple guys, even as they subtly tried to assure her that it was perfectly fine. The guys, being nephs and never having had to pretend to be human, lacked the worries and anxieties about intimacy and monogamy that she experienced, but were each struggling with personal reasons that kept them from fully giving into their feelings for Serenity.

I enjoyed the book, and based on the ending it looks like the big villain has made its entrance and the next two books will be spent trying to defeat him.

Riveting action, burning questions, and heat!

Damn! She did it again!!! Left me teetering on this cliff, suspended in free fall! Ahhh! I love these books, love the main character, and her supporting cast of characters. And the men, oh the men! Definite action and steam in this book, but our fearless author does the tease oh so well! I love how Serenity grows in knowledge, strength and her relationships in each book. Though I am an inpatient wench, I appreciate the time it has taken for the connections in the team to be made. The constant mystery and threats, meanwhile, keep the team on their toes, constantly fighting to stay with their heads above water. I'm exhausted, and all I did was read the thing! Some mysteries are solved, but they only lead to a deeper, more ruthless threat. I have sneaking suspicions about what may occur, bit I know I'll only be surprised again. The author knows how to tease out the surprises, there are some good, and some bad in here, but I can only love her for the world she's created that sucks me in so completely I forget about sleep, work, basically life, for the time it takes to inhale each book. I am left so full I could burst, yet I'm always left starving for more! Once more, well done!!!

My god, don't you just love it when the heroine is lowkey outperforming her previous achievements? Wooo! Never a dull moment with Serenity and the Protectorate Team! And I love the interwoven threads and cases which ultimately lead to the major conflict of the whole series??? The unraveling of back stories, the discovery of missing links and the clarification of what's in store for them in the future??? Most of all Bane, Ryker, Orin and Rivers all being wrapped around Serenity's fingers? WHAT A QUEEN. MY LEVEL OF SATISFACTION JUST WENT THROUGH THE ROOFS, YOU GUYS!

The downside to all of this amazeballs is that when I devour a series, I devour them as fast as humanely possible. This series just unleashed a monster huhuhuhu. I. Can't. Wait. Seriously. I can't wait for the next one! Please please go for a very long time. Like say, 77 more books in this series?

I knew it. I had suspicions that something was going to happen. But I would like something to happen on the relationships front sheesh it’s taking a while. I really like Bane and I really liked Orin until he let Cassie back in. Still don’t like Cassie no matter who she was or wasn’t, I still don’t trust her.

This book was fast paced but also glossed over a lot of things which can get annoying. Telling us in 2-3 sentences what occurred over a 5 hour period is annoying, why couldn’t we experience some of those conversations and moments? I don’t like when authors continually do this, it’s not something I’m a fan of.

I do like however how this one didn’t end on a cliffhanger cliffhanger it felt more like a series plot cliffhanger which makes it nice and refreshing.

On to the next one.

This is the next to last book in the series, and as is true for everything I’ve read by Ms. Cassidy, I don’t want it to end. We get a deeper look at the parts of this world in this book, and we learn more about what’s going on. I love how close Serenity’s getting to her guys, and I love where their relationships are going. And, we do get to know some of the characters better which is part of the reason I don’t want this series to end. I must add that something happened towards the end of this book and I was like “I knew it!!” and I was so glad! I’m sorry I was so vague, but I don’t want to spoil anything. This was a great addition to the series and I really can’t recommend this book and series enough. I was provided the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.

Book three did a great job of continuing the story line with a fast pace, plenty of action, some mystery and a lot of situations in between.

Serenity is definitely fitting into her new life, but it isn't always easy for her. New things are revealed and old things continue to be worked on. Relationships were definitely blossoming and growing in SECRETS OF MIDNIGHT. I won't spoil anything, but Serenity is definitely starting to think more like her team mates.

I was not surprised at ALL by what happened at the end of SECRETS OF MIDNIGHT. I saw it coming and it definitely throws a wrench in things. I am so excited to see how things play out in book four.

Fabulous set of books well written and captivating series by Debbie Cassidy! Plenty of Action and romance with just the right amount of heat. Every Character is easy to picture and each has their own full presence and is each an essential part of the puzzle that makes up the essence of this series of books, every twist and turn pulls you in to the story deeper and you can really connect. Lots of unexpected twists and turns to keep you captivated. Love, Love, Love these. Any one who enjoyed the Gatekeeper Chronicles & The Witch Blood Chronicles will love this series. Cant wait until May when the next book comes out.

This series by Debbie is so exciting and full of action and adventure! I absolutely loved books 1 & 2 and now book 3 is by favourite out of them all!! Secrets of Midnight does not disappoint and it captivated my attention from page one all the way to the end! And what an ending - I can’t give away anything but holy hell what a bunch of revelations in this book!! Serenity is even better in this book, she is more powerful, more demanding and assertive and I can’t wait to see her take what she needs from all the guys in upcoming books!! And talking about the guys...who can forget to mention Bane, you really get to see a bit of a softer side to him in this book and that connection between Serenity and Bane has really developed! But you can also see so much more developing with Ryker, Rivers and Odin! However the one person I just want to slap is Cassie...she really needs to learn when to cut her losses and let go! She is quite annoying in this book and I hope we see her grow up in the next book!! I cannot wait for book 4 - this is an absolutely highly recommended series by Debbie Cassidy with well developed characters and an exciting and interesting new world! Do yourself a favour and buy these books!!!

Continues strong

Few book series can continue to hold both appeal and substance over the long haul, but this one manages it quite well. Serenity is learning more about herself, her abilities and the reasons she is what she is. Arthurian legends interwoven with biblical myth and magic, how can you not love that?

The blossoming relationships Serenity struggles against are complex and emotionally brutal. This is far from a ‘sex book’ despite the RH theme - this is an exploration of self and the heart, one that subtly pulls you in. I have greatly enjoyed her journey so far and can’t wait to see what happens in the end - and if midnight can, or should, survive the fall out.

This series is amazing and impossible to put down. Serenity Harker and her nephilim Protectorate have a huge fight on their hands, against a darkness they’ve never encountered. New monsters are coming out of the woodwork and new murder investigations are being led. She is becoming closer to the men in the house, but still feels guilty, from having played as a human for so long, it is hard to let go of old beliefs. Can’t wait to find out what happens next and what this new power means now that the veil has been ripped open!
