The Off-Season

Rate this book
He had it all…

The day Ian “Tag” Taggart’s world comes crashing down around him, he’s sitting in a fast food drive-thru, waiting for an order of fries. Golden boy of the MLB and shortstop for the Washington Rampage, Tag quickly finds himself losing grip on his superstar life with the use of two awful words: sexual assault.

The only problem? He’s innocent.

Tag’s willing to do anything to prove to the world he’d never commit the crime he’s been accused of. So when his agent suggests taking a break from the spotlight, he listens. The quiet town on Maple Lake is everything Seattle isn’t. And Lexi Barnes is everything he wasn’t expecting to find.

Running from a past she can never escape, Lexi wants nothing to do with her new neighbor. But fixing up an old house takes more work than anticipated, and the new guy in town happens to have quite the set of carpentry skills. She won’t let herself fall for him though. She has no room in her life for love.

If only someone would tell her heart that.

He’s funny and charming. She’s closed off and rude.

Together, they’re like fire and ice.

Prepare to get burned this Off-Season.

Today's apparently not my day for reading. Two 2-star completions in a row.

I'm not a Sports romance fan, at all, but I needed to find one to fit a monthly challenge and this one seemed to fit the bill. Despite the two star rating, I'll say if you like basic and clean romances, you may like this one. The author writes well enough and it's not rushed; however, it's not my thing at all and I find this stuff boring. The plot is predictable from page one. I know how they'll meet, can tell how each will react to each others hang-ups, what will eventually happen, and there's nothing different about it to hold my interest. It's a very simplified romance with vanilla flavoring tucked in the mix.

The rating isn't for the genre or the writing technique, but it is down for the boredom, predictable plot devices, and generic characters. Give me something a little different! If not in the story or the characters, we need genuine humor or an oddball character to keep things a little more lively. Something.

Having these two characters basically alone and secluded near each other doesn't help. They both know others and there's a small town but it's still too beside each other, let's make breakfast and help do home improvements. Throwing in some more characters or different situations may have helped slightly. Starting off without not telling the truth about Tag means that it will pop up later and be a problem - predictable but something I wasn't in the mood for from page one. It's like an inevitable accident that you know is coming, you just have to sit there and impatiently wait for it to come. A bit cookie-cutter for me, but some are fine with this and will enjoy it more.

I love sports romance. And, I always find that odd, as I am not at all a sports fan, so liking sports romance seems off. Until you think about it. I like the heroes and the heroines with the drive to get to the pinnacle of a competitive and difficult career, and I like watching them navigate life.

In this one, Ian is at the pinnacle and is dealing with the aftermath of false allegations that were made against him by a woman who just wanted the money she could get from him, and he is hiding at a lake house during the off season to let the press die down. And, I get it that this happens, but with the current climate around women, and them not being believed, I thought the book went a little heavily toward making sure each character had the disclaimer speech about how false accusations hurt all women. I guess it was necessary, but it seemed oddly forced.

Ian and Lexi had chemistry. Eventually. And, when we finally see them together, there is an appeal to them that works and you believe. The issue I had is the pacing of the book. It takes until 50% in for the relationship to take off, and there is still her secret, the inevitable split they go through, and the reconciliation. It took too long to get to these parts of the story and because this all took place in the last 50% of the book, they felt rushed.

I was particularly disappointed by the make up scene, I thought it lacked the punch I was hoping for and instead of the emotional scene I wanted, the reconciliation felt like it was plot driven and not emotionally driven.

I liked what this book could have been, and I did enjoy it, but I finished it feeling vaguely disappointed by the things I felt I would have liked to see told, and the things that I felt were skipped. The ending, honestly, more than being satisfying, drove this point home one more time.

I can't say I totally recommend this title, but I didn't hate it either.

3.75 stars for this incredibly sweet and beautiful contemporary romance.

The story-line was fun to read and whilst there aren't really any unpredictable twists or whatsoever, it was still a really enthralling and addictive read. Mostly thanks to the writing I think. I loved the writing! I was hooked into this story right away and wanted to finish it in one-sitting.

The characters are fun to read about and I always love reading from both POV's so that's always a plus.

The romance was beautifully developed and written and I loved seeing Lexi 'open up' to Ian. Ian was such a sweetheart and he made my heart beat faster a lot of times - crush material, ladies, really.

The minor characters were fun to read about as well even though we didn't see a lot of them. And I'm really excited to read the next book in the series, hopefully soon, so I can continue reading about these hot baseball players hehe.. The synopsis of the second book sounds like it's going to be drama-filled but I'm really excited at the same time since I liked Liv and Brandon as minor characters in this first book. So that's definitely something to look forward too.

If you're into romance reads in which some - not a lot in this first book - sports elements are present, in which really likeable characters are present, in which great writing is present and of course; in which a really well and beautifully developed romance - it's a romance book so that's an important part of the book right!? - is present, this is definitely a book I'd recommend you give a go.

*Thanks to 'Give Me Books Promotions' I was able to read an e-arc of this book in exchange for leaving an honest review afterwards*

The Off-Season didn’t disappoint. First of all, the underlying start to the story is so relevant which was smart of the author. Ian is a famous MLB player who has been falsely accused of sexual assault. The sensitive subject matter was well written and pulled off. When he goes to the lake house to get out of the spot light, he encounters Lexi. I LOVED this character. It’s so refreshing to read a feisty female character doesn’t automatically melt at the thought of being pursued by a muscley professional athlete. The angst was spot on, the chemistry was hot, and these two very flawed and broken people healed each other. It did progress a tad slow for me but in the end it worked itself out. Also, LOVE this cover!
I’ll definitely be reading more of Megan Green’s work.

I received The Off-Season by Megan Green in my May Romance Reveal Book box! Since unboxing this beauty I have been dying to read this book! Everything about this book intrigued me from the breathtaking cover to the intriguing blurb. I knew this was going to be a book I would have trouble putting down.

The Off-Season by Megan Green is a baseball romance set in Off Season, meaning there isn't much game time in this novel. Given that little fact, I have to admit, I was a little skeptical because I love Baseball and I crave the game time moments like an addict. With that being said, I loved the twist of this book. I loved the off season period and getting to see Ian 'Tag' Taggart in his everyday element.

The Off Season isn't all fun and games though, this novel touches on a serious subject revolving around Tag and a rape accusation. After the charges are dismissed, Tag's manager thinks it would be wise if he was out of the public eye for a while, so Tag's best friend and teammate offers up his cabin situated in a recluse area. Tag is about to discover that the cabin next door is no longer vacant.

Lexi needs to get away, which results in her buying a fixer-upper Cabin. She wants the peace and craves the solidarity that only this recluse area holds. That is what she thinks, until Ian moves in next door.

Overall, I loved Lexi and Tag. I loved seeing Tag tear through the walls Lexi has built up blocking everyone out. I also loved seeing Lexi slowly let go of her past mistakes and try to move on. I cannot wait to continue on with this series! I'm looking forward to reading Brandon's story!

The Off-Season by Megan Green was a book that took me by surprise. The author was new to me but I love sports romance and the blurb was interesting so I decided to give it a try. It is definitely one I'm happy I picked up.

This book hit me right in the feels. There were moments of sadness that had tears welling up in my eyes. There were moments of happiness where I couldn't help but smile. And of course at its heart was this romantic story of two people who are both hurting for vastly different reasons who help each other heal. The journey I went in as I read was a good one, and the ending was well worth the angst.

I would highly recommend this contemporary sports romance. I look forward to reading more by this author in future.

I stayed up late finishing this story - bad Amber! But I just had to know how it all ended! And who hasn’t forgone sleep to find that out, amirite? I had to find out how Ian/Tag and Lexi’s story ends. And if Brandon gets the start of a story since he was so anti-relationship...

Tag is the it guy of baseball. Until suddenly he’s not. For something he didn’t do. So he goes on a sabbatical away from the spotlight and scandal.

Lexi is sort of just trying to re-connect with living. Things happen (not telling what) but she almost goes into a seclusion and this new house is her chance at a fresh start, of she’ll let herself.

I really hope there’s more of this series! I want to see Brandon’s fall into a relationship...

I've enjoyed this story.

Lexi and Tag meet in Maple Lake where they chose to hide. The first couldn't forget that her bad choices had destroyed some other lives and the second needed a bit of peace, away from the spotlight, after the false rape charges against him dropped.
I liked how their relationship grow steadly chapter after chapter and that they tell their secrets when they feel comfortable to do it.

This was my first from Megan Green and I can't already wait to read the seond book in the series.

I seem to be on a sport romance kick lately, but that is okay. It is one of my favorite romance genre, I mean who does not love an athlete, right? In the Washington Rampage series by Megan Green, we get the story of baseball players. In the first book of the series, The Off-Season, we get Ian “Tag” Taggart’s story.

Tag is riding high as the golden boy of baseball. But his world literally comes crashing down on him when he is accused of sexual assault. Tag knows he is innocent and is willing to do what it takes to provide it. So at the suggestion of his agent, he takes a breaks from the spotlight.

Lexi Barnes wants nothing to do with her new neighbor, but somehow she seems to keep forgetting that. Lexi carries her own baggage and just wants to be left alone with her new home. She is looking for a fresh start and the man next door is not supposed to be a part of that!

Both Lexi and Tag are each is licking their separate wounds and never expected the other to drop into their lives. But sometimes life throws you curveballs! I loved how sweet and patient Tag was. Lexi had suffered so much and Tag seemed to be the man for her. It was a slow process, but I loved watching these two fall. Their journey was not perfect, but it was perfect for them. The Off-Season by Megan Green was a slow burn romance with all the feels.

If you are looking for something refreshing, something real and something that will make you think but also bring you hours of enjoyment, then The Off-Season by Megan Green is the book for you. Green spoils her readers with a tale of loss, self-awareness and new beginnings. A story line that is different then what else is out there, The Off-Season gives the inside scoop on what happens when two people who are desperately trying to find themselves, help save someone else who needs saving too.

Tag and Lexi are two characters who both are self-loathing and are reflecting in what has become of their lives. A chance encounter brings the two together and the rest ... well the rest is a fantastic story. Lexi's past is haunting her, preventing her from being able to move forward with her life. Hiding out in the middle of nowhere, she happens to fall right into the hands of one of the worlds hottest baseball stars and they are drawn to one another. Tag's character is so charming, so sweet and his passion for Lexi and saving her - also saves himself. Green does a wonderful job in creating characters who are so easy to identify with, able to root for and the dynamics between the two are so different, but yet they are very much the same.

I absolutely love sports romance novels and Green does a fabulous job with The Off-Season. I cannot wait to read more from this great author and to see what she can do with the next books in the series. If you are looking for something that is different from other sports romance novels, a book that will make you reflect and think, and something that is enjoyable, then The Off-Season is the book for you. Make sure you add this one to your To-Be-Read Shelf.

It is somewhat of a normal pattern for me to grab a sports-related romance when I’ve got limited time and need something fun-to-read. Usually a gorgeous athlete will provide just that. I’ll admit that I was hoping for a little more than I found this time around the bases.

Ian “Tag” Taggart was another of those star baseball stars with a major league black mark against his name. He needed a hideout – and his friend’s lake house seemed the perfect solution. Tag was a good guy, and he got shafted royally. His character was well developed and very likable.

Lexi Barnes was hiding from a past mistake for which she’d never forgive herself. She’s somewhat of a head case. Those repetitive inner monologues of hers nearly drove me into my own, made-up of grumbles and criticism. Her tragic situation was indeed a sad one and pulled at my heartstrings, but she never quite reached that soft part of my heart.

The story is told in dual points of view. I enjoyed Tag’s voice far greater than Lexi’s. The plotline had lots of possibilities– one of those coulda-shoulda-woulda situations. Starting off with a catchy and sweet meet and greet, two solid and strong subject matters to build on, along with a fabulous setting, and two opposite personalities, the material was there to make it an extraordinary read. But it fell short in the development.

Overall, I was disappointed in this all the way around. The ending wasn’t very emotional, or at least not the emotions I was awaiting. It was missing those awe-inspiring feelings!

For me, it was underplayed and pretty much a strike-out. Other readers will most likely find it fine and dandy. Play ball at your own risk.

This is my first Megan Green story since I wanted to read The Clean-Up I thought I would read this book first and I was really disappointed. I enjoy sport stories, although I really do hate baseball as a sport this story wasn't big on the sports part.

Ian and Lexi are both kind of boring. Lexi spends way to much time in her head. Ian is running from the press because well he did something he wasn't supposed to. While up in his friend's cabin he meets Lexi. And decides to help her remodel her cabin.

I didn't feel much chemistry between the two it was like hello let's fix this and then hop into bed, oh and I love you. I am hoping The Clean-Up is better.

Beautiful Love story!

This is my first book by Megan Green and I absolutely loved it!! I fell in love with Ian instantly and my heart broke for how Lexi felt of herself. This was a beautiful love story that shows how even with mistakes and regret you deserve to love and be loved and to live life. No one is perfect we all make mistakes but it’s leaving your mistakes in the past, learning from them, and moving on that’s the true challenge.

I'm a new reader to Megan Green and I thoroughly enjoyed The Off-Season. Its a beautiful contemporary romance that I virtually read in one sitting.

Ian Taggart is a professional baseball player and after been accused of something he didn't do he just needs to get away for a while so he heads to his buddies vacation home by the lake where he meets the very beautiful but very closed off Lexi.
Lexi hasn't been herself over the last couple of years, she made a huge mistake and the guilt is eating away at her. When she decides to uproot her life and buys a fixer upper by the lake she has no idea just how much it will change her life.

A great read from Megan Green and I can't wait to jump into the next book on this series.

So I don't even like baseball so for me to read a romance about it is a miracle. I do have to say I am glad I gave this new to me author a chance, because I am in love with this series. it was a pleasant change from the naughty dirty books I like. This book was bittersweet and very emotional. Once you have read this book, you will be wanting more, and I honestly can't wait for Brandon's book.

Loved this story. I really like the small little lake town this book was set in. Loved the side characters that bring different aspects to the lives of Lexi & Tag. I throughly enjoyed laughing how Tag and Lexi met. I enjoyed them working together. My favorite part was the night they had the luke warm cocoa. Those next several days were the best. Later in the story such strong emotions and a mistake was forgiven. Such a wonderful pivotal moment.

Lexi and Tag’s story starts at the end! The end of a time when both were lost and needed something bigger than what life had handed them!

Lexi a very ambitious woman sets out to start a new chapter in her life! Tag takes a little “vacation” to get his head straight and by chance these two come together in an angst filled story full of love, laughter and healing!

What a sweet book about second chances and forgiveness. This book has been on my to read list for awhile. I am glad I finally decided to give it a chance. I definitely enjoyed reading Ian and Lexi's story.

Ian is a baseball star in need a place to regroup. Lexi is a young woman in need of a place to start over. When these two end up as neighbors, sparks fly. Lexi fights the attraction from the start. Her past has left her feeling she doesn't deserve to find happiness. Her story will break your heart. Lucky for her though, Ian doesn't give up easily.

Ian is someone you will easily fall in love with. He is patient with Lexi which is what she needs. Once she opens up you see a remarkable young lady.
This is the part book to start this series!

The first book of the Washington Rampage, The Off-Season features Tag and Lexi, both hiding out from their pasts. They find solace in lake houses neighboring each other. They slowly develop a friendship, each a bit wary, and worn out from life.

While I enjoyed The Off-Season, I found it to be slowly paced, which was distracting. The characters kept me intrigued, as they unwrapped each other's layers and discovering one another's secrets and guilts. It felt a bit repetitive at times. I would recommend to the reader looking for a story featuring damaged characters and craving a slow burn.

I'm a sucker for anything with a baseball player and happily read this as an ARC. I wish this novel had more actual baseball in it, but this was still a fun read. So no need to fear if you're not a sports fan. We've got a damaged heroine, Lexi, running from her past who doesn't feel she deserves a chance a love or even happiness. And, a damaged hero, Tag, running from a false lawsuit for sexual harassment that has almost destroyed his career. Their lives collide in an isolated rural town. The amount of baggage these two characters tote makes for a super slow development of their relationship. I appreciated this. These aren't people who would jump into bed with the first random hottie they come across. With both having huge trust issues, starting a relationship takes time.
However, if you want to read something that gets to the hot-and-heavy fast, this isn't the book for you. This is a book to read in order to savor the slow build-up and the delightful way the author weaves these characters' lives together. By the time they actually became involved the book was almost over.
Megan Green takes us through some great highs and some low lows with this sweet storyline. This is an easy weekend read. Really enjoyed this one.

This is my first book by this author. I decided to read it because I was in the mood for a sports romance and it was recommended by a friend. I was sold when some of the reviews said it was angsty. I would have to disagree with that. This fell a little flat for me. I was bored a good bit of the time. I fell like I missed something. I felt like half of the book, the two main characters were just working on this house and then all of a sudden they loved one another. Maybe it's just me and I wasn't in a good head space to read this type of book. I did like the characters and I think the author did a great job giving them good qualities and a relatable back story. The problem for me was it took past 50% for things to start going somewhere. I wanted more emotions. I did enjoy some parts of the book. I do want to encourage you to read this because I believe it was just my preferences of why I didn't just love it. I'm really looking forward to reading Brandon and Liv's story. I think I'm going to like it so much better!

This book jumps right off the gate, in the middle of the action. Ian “Tag” Taggart is thrown into a lawsuit that he’s just not prepared for - and accused of things he didn’t do. Some time out of town may be exactly what he needs… then, he meets Lexi Barnes. A little fixing up of a house, a book store, and some nosey neighbors brings us into a heart warming story of letting go, and moving on.

My favorite part about this book was Lexi’s vulnerabilities, and insecurities. I liked that we had a heroine that was flawed, confused, and not so easy to just jump into the hot guys bed. I really liked the depth that she had, and that it took quite a bit of time for us to really get to know her.

Hard to put down. Lexi is so guilty about her accident she continually refuses any kindness shown to her. She tries to punish herself to stone for her terrible mistake. Ian can't decide how to reach her but, he keeps trying.

This is one of those books that had the potential to be awesome but instead, fell flat to ok. I skimmed more pages than I would have liked. Inner Monologue Reptitiveness is a "Hell NO" for me. I am suprised I even finished it.

With that said, the story had potential but.... I'll get to that in a sec.
Tag gets accused of rap. He gets away from life and goes away to his BFF cabin.
Lexie made a terrible decision that changed the course of her life and two others. She moves away and buys a fixer upper house that just happens to be next to Tag's friends cabin.

How they met was good. How Tag helped her was good. The overall story was good. Great LOL moments. The side characters were fun.. BBBBBUUUUUUTTTTT...

After every few paragraphs, Lexie's inner monologue of why she shouldn't do this or that.. blah blah blah would make an appearance. Every inner monologue would add another clue to what her mistake was.. but the problem with that, it just made the inner monologue longer. Not to mention Lexie's personality was boring and a downer, of course it was b/c of her mistake. We new Lexie was having a difficult time moving on from this "who wouldn't" but come on! Maybe the author could have written it differently less WHINY inner monologue and more "lets do something about it" attitude... I don't know... But again her inner monologue distracted me from a story that had potential to be great.

So here I am being very repetitive about this inner monologue problem. LOL!!!! If you gonna use alot of inner monologue - let the inner monologue tell us something different!

There was one moment I actually LOL.
“Your prime rib, he’s Kobe beef, and I’m dried up old jerky. Now that we’ve got that settled, can we talk about something other than cuts of meat?”

Im glad I skimmed to the end b/c the story did wrap up nicely..

Dual POV

I wouldn't recommend.

Just in time for baseball season! This is the story of Ian "Tag" Taggart, short stop for the Washington Rampage. He is falsely accused of assaulting a woman. As his innocence is proven he decides to lay low out of the spotlight at his team mates, Brandon or "B", lake property. He is definitely not looking to meet a woman. But he can't ignore the beautiful woman in the property next to him who just moved in and is repairing the house herself. Lexi Barnes is running from a mistake. She doesn't want to let Ian into her life. She doesn't feel she deserves him. The more she pushes him away the more he pushes back for her to let him into her life. Until they can't fight it anymore. That's when all the secrets come out. And they have to see if they are strong enough to survive it.
I loved this story so much. From the first moment we meet Ian we know he is innocent and the victim of a gold digger. Instantly I fell for his good boy charm and I just wanted a happy ending for him. I am sucker for a baseball stud too. When we first meet Lexi there is no question whether she has secrets but we don't find out those secrets until Ian does. And it keeps the reader hanging on. Once it is revealed I found myself forgiving her and wanting her to have a happy ending as well. These are two characters with amazing hearts. But they don't always make the best decisions.
I highly recommend this book to fans of sports romance. There isn't much baseball in this book since it is during "the off season." But the world of sports and what it's like for athletes is definitely there. This was a first read for me from this author and I can't wait to read more. Actually the second book in this series that deals with Ian's teammate and best friend Brandon is due in a few months. I can't wait for that. And after readers read this story they will be excited like me for more.
