The Gay Teen's Guide to Defeating a Siren #2

The Gay Teen's Guide to Defeating a Siren: Book 2: The Siren

Rate this book
After months of hiding from the evil Siren, Blaize Trales returns to Sanctuary Preparatory Academy for answers.

Some things at Sanctuary haven’t changed. It’s still a secret high school for gay teens. Healing Hamburgers still taste like overcooked charcoal. And it’s still Blaize’s favorite place in the world.

Other things on campus will never be the same. The loss of a friend at the hands of the Siren haunts Sanctuary. The struggle to hide a newfound power sucks. And fumbling through a crush makes Blaize’s life even crazier.

The line between relationship and duty is wrecked when government agents, under the Siren’s control, invade Sanctuary. Blaize will have to choose between protecting himself and rescuing those he cares about.

Lucky for Blaize, he wields the ultimate weapon—being gay. And he’s still pretty good at it.

I'm always wary when it comes to sequels. For some reason, I never expect them to be as good as the first.

In this case, the sequel was even better.

There were elements to the original story that I missed, like Blaize's awkward relationship with Jimmy, but Blaize was plenty enough awkward with the rest of the characters to make up for it.

There were moments that made me gasp. There were moments that made me laugh out loud. And it kept me guessing until the very end.

I am very anxiously awaiting the next installment in this hilarious and addictive YA series!

The sequel was BETTER!!! Yes, still a tad long. Wagner is simply SO descriptive with the little inner monologue details and dialogue. But it’s not even like I’d cross out full pages if I were editing it. It’s random singular lines every other page that end up adding up to a lot that could be cut. I gotta say though…longer than necessary or not…I *flew* through this one. Loved that there was less “set up” than Book One, loved the sequence of events, and how some of this mystery unfolded. Overall, still really entranced by this concept and storyline in general. Very very emotionally invested and excited (and nervous) for this third book! Eeeeee!

After reading GTG Book 1: The Seeker, I was hooked into this brilliantly-conceived world that, sadly, is not so different from our own, a world where homophobia is rampant and being gay actually makes you immune to the machinations of The Siren, a mysterious being that seems intent on sending sexual tolerancy back to the Stone Age.

Blaize, our intrepid hero, has embraced the role of Seeker (though he chose not to disclose it to anyone after that tragedy at the end of Book One). With his best friends Cassie and Roze, they continue their surreptitious investigations into the identity of the Siren ... for only then can they stop her once and for all. This, of course, is intermixed with tons of teenage angst, awkwardness, and wonderful humor, of which Mr. Wagner is a master.

The wait for this book was worth it. The ending so completely caught me by surprise that my jaw, literally, hit the floor.

I, for one, cannot wait to see how this series ends. Whether you're gay or not, whether you're a teen or not, this is a series that deserves to be read by everyone.

This book. Oh my god.

After reading the first book I was so excited for the sequel to come out, and it did not disappoint. I basically inhale read the last 60 percent of this book and it was such a roller coaster of a read that at the end I had a moment where I did not know how I was going to move on from it.

This book may be one of my favorite books I’ve ever read and now I just need to wait for 2 things: the print version to be available so I can display it on my shelf (the cover is so pretty) and the third book to come out so I can binge the entire series again.

“Sometimes, decisions have to be made that benefit the greater good. Even at your own expense.”

3.5/5
Again, I cant put this book on a higher score. It gave me a lot of frustation.
First, the main character is so... stupid and irritating, I barely resist the urge to stop my reading because of him. It's a teenager, I know, but there are many bookish teenagers that are less stupid than this one. The balance between the moments I care for Blaize and not, crashed totally on "NO, I Dont Care". The plot is very interesting, and again, the school theme is cool, but the characters...
However, I must to give positive points for the 'villain' and the almost (almost) predictible plot twist. The book deliberately leave you in a horrible cliffhanger, but I guess is for making sure to chain you onto the next book...
I hate being trapped in unfinished series and realizing until the end. Silly me.
Guess I have to wait for the next one.
This book is a two-sided one; you love it or you hate it.
I hate it. But my curiosity is stronger, and I need to know how all this siren thing ends.

Blaise’s Southern conservative dad is hopeful that his “healed” son might marry Blaise’s girl “friend” Roze from boarding school. Apparently, ever concerned what the neighbors think, Blaise’s parents feel it’s preferable to have a black daughter-in-law than a gay son-law.

This second book is not as well edited as the first. Where the first book was near flawless, there are numerous typos in book two. The typos are real words, just not the right words so they’re not caught by a spell checker. For example, “I didn’t seen him this week” instead of “I didn’t see him this week.” And there’s the occasional missing word. I wonder if Cody has ever considered using a beta reader. Or if he has one, a better one.

Loved the first book, was really looking forward to reading this second installment of the trilogy and I was not disappointed!! Cody Wagner stayed true to his characters and threw in some great plot twists that were most unexpected. Looking forward to number three!

A twist that I not saw coming. And having only learned of this series when those two books were out and not knowing there would be a third, I was dreading the end. This could not be it. Luckily I read that a third book is being written and I am eagerly awaiting it.

Not as good as the first book, and it took SUCH a long time for things to actually happen - the twist is a bit meh, but it's still an enjoyable easy read - looking forward to book 3 and how it all wraps up!

An excellent read. It takes up naturally where the first book left off, and adds so much more dimension to the story as a whole. I can't wait to see where Mr. Wagner takes us in his third novel.
