Raised by the Union to believe she’s worthless, declared incompetent by a system she doesn’t understand, Mary Jones wants nothing more than to run away and hide. When an underground society known as The Order chooses Mary for a mission to escape the city, she’ll discover she’s more than she was ever allowed to believe.
Accompanied by a man she’s not sure she can trust, Mary travels through lands ravaged by a long-forgotten war, discovering a past the Union wants everyone to forget and an idea worth risking everything for. She never promised the Order she’d come home, but after experiencing a world without Union control, she’ll return to see them stopped, even if it means risking her life and her liberty in the process.

Wow. I've been a fan of B.E. Sanderson's various genres since she first started publishing. Her entry into the Dystopian world is a good one. A good dystopian makes the reader stop and think, "Hey, this could happen." This is one of those books. I see the roots of the premise when I turn on the TV, watch social media feeds, and listen to the rhetoric of the talking heads. Mary Jones, I246, is a cog in the big wheel of the Union. Books are a thing of the past. People use pictograms to "read" signs, instructions come by way of videos. The city is divided into castes and Mary is an Indigo, on the next to last rung. When she's fired, she has no place to go but down. On her way to her sleeping room, she stops at a building that's always fascinated her. Walking inside, her entire world shatters. Truths become lies. Lies become truth. And she learns she has a destiny if she's just strong and brave enough to step up and seize it.

This book reminds me of that iconic Apple MacIntosh commercial of the woman running into the indoctrination hall and throwing a Thor-like hammer at the giant screen with the talking head. And in some ways, it is also reminiscent of THE HANDMADE'S TALE, except knowledge and learning are under siege rather than procreation/women's rights.

Mary is very much the main character but she's helped along by others, including Daniel, a captain of the Union Guard. This one definitely goes on the Keeper Shelf!
