Sleeping with the Enemy

Rate this book
A special Valentine's Day story by Seth King

“I hate your guts. Now drop your jeans.”

Wade and Thomas were best friends – until they became virtual strangers.

Both of them know what happened the night that drove them apart. Neither of them have ever confronted it, or even talked about it.

They have had wet dreams about it, though.

Five years later, these foes find themselves stuck in the same hotel room during a mountain blizzard after the rest of their college group escapes – on Valentine’s Day, no less.

That old spark is still there. So is the new animosity between them. Soon Wade jokes to himself that only one of two things will happen now: an epic session of “hate sex,” or a possible murder case.

It’s all up to them now - and the blizzard is only getting worse.

Cover: Nope. Pass. Cheap.... What else can I say. Obvs, didn't like it.

Right to the point here, this story is an enemy to lover to hey, see ya later kind of book. It's left with a HFN, no real resolve. Depressing as hell. Not to mention, it was way too wordy. I felt like it took forever for King to get to the point. Sex was typical, okay.

Minor editing errors. Lots and lots of telling instead of showing: goes with the wordy writing. And I don't know if it was my copy or what, but the BOLD in the story drives me crazy. Yes, like really drives me crazy. It pulled me out of the story. There are ways to stress without bold. A good editor will tell you that bold words in proper writing is never allowed. Formatting was a bit shifty too, but again, not sure if it was my kindle.

Why 1.5 stars: Bold did me in. Killed my mood. The characters were not likable at all. I didn't find their "hate/love" banter sexy or cute. Sure everyone loves hot angry sex every once in awhile, but damn boy, this was all this was. Or it seemed. I'm not a prude for a HEA book. I don't need it, like it, but don't need it, but...... BUT(oh did I bold that? Nope.) Valentine's short and you don't get the good ending. It was a kick in the balls, but since this mimicked King's "real life" maybe it's how it went down. Who knows. It just didn't work for me at all. Let me know what you think.

On a personal note: A friend suggested I read King's books. Told me he was a BI man and then raved about how all King's books were from his "real life experiences." Hmm, let's repeat that. Hmm. Does everyone buy this? So, I started Facebook stalking King. Almost all his posts have "real life" as promotion with his books. Now, of course, I can't say this isn't true, but damn, I'd be really surprised if this isn't some sort of marking ploy that readers are eating up. You know, the book world meeting real life. I'm sorry, but I don't buy it. But it works for him. Good for you.

PS: I'm questioning my friends if they easily believe propaganda ;) Kidding. Thanks for the tip, Babe.

I did buy a couple of his books, read them and will review, but I can't do the "this is my life" book for EVERY story. I just feel ripped off, deceived a bit. Does that make sense. Jeez, being a skeptic is a Bitch sometimes. Sorry, Mr. King. If this is your life, hope it gets better.

It was much better, much more tolerable, than what had been my previous experience with this author but, predictably, this was still.... Obviously written by Seth King.

Not only was the relationship between the two MC's immature and outright stupid, but also bordering on toxic. Plus, the dialogue felt off at times, like the author was channeling every cheesy romantic movie (*straight* cheesy romantic movie- and I feel the need to highlight this part, due to the explicit dismissal of straight people that this author exhibit in his works, at least the ones I've read) ever, and not even in an effective, somewhat cute way. This author couldn't do cute to save his life, and that's clear by now.

The sex scenes weren't much better: I swear I've read shitty fanfic with more enjoyable sex scenes.

Lastly, for being a Valentine's Day special short, this was depressing as fuck. I guess it was written for single people? Still, I'm single and it didn't work for me as a Valentine entertainment. Just no.

Honestly, I'm more disappointed than I should be, because this had started fairly well, but it progressively fell apart until by the end it was just as much of a trainwreck as I expected.

I guess this author is just not for me.

This was not a happy story at all. There’s no romance in this, only depressing heartbreak.

I loved it.

Seth writes a good book. The boy knows what he's doing. If you're looking for HEA this is not the book. Seth is a romance author that gives you all the love and feelings, but with a real life ending. Most first loves don't work out, but in the book. He left it up to you're imagination if it worked out or not. He left it open to possibilities. I enjoyed it and even cried a little bit for Wade and hell Thomas too. He was confused and scared over a past event that scared them both to basically ignore their attraction to men. I gave it 5 stars and highly recommend it.

It is what it is:

A Valentine's short with a little angst to push you forward. Don't expect much more than that.

The scene shifts, sudden epiphanies, and tense changes were a little jarring (also spelling, eek). It's wishy-washy and centers on two characters who are total contradictions, (I'm looking at you, Thomas-I-Seem-So-Solid-But-I-Actually-Have-No-Idea-What-I-Want). It also touched on serious topics that could (and should) have been explored more in a longer book. Personally, this would have been awesome with smoother transitions and less, *poof* to four years of anger and avoidance, *bam* we love each other, *?* but do we really, *bam* lets be angry again, *poof* lets not commit and just experience... asfwaojvsiofwg. Okay. I just didn't like it.

But I liked Wade! :)

There are some good moments, conflicts about the feelings of to college men who have known each other since childhood. Weaker spots fall into a kind of redundancy that may be unavoidable, feelings found in most male-male romances. These conflicts balance with good writing and with new approaches, in this case a constant battle of love-hate problems internally and between the two characters. The potential makes one wish King had put the book aside for a year or so and giving it a additional and more complex story lines.

Simply beautifully written

A coming of age story that follows two boys thru experimentation and heartbreak to discover their true selves. You will fall in love with Wade and grieve with him through his years of struggle. And Thomas brings his own inner pain to the relationship. A well written story with a strong message. I loved it.

I swear every book Seth King tries to break my heart and usually succeeds. I went into thinking Yes a good vengeful hate book, a story of after a broken heart. NOPE!!!
This story proves there is a fine line between love and hate add sexual tension and fear then you get story that has your emotions all over the place. I loved it!!

Bah c'est loin d'etre la lecture du siecle. L'idée de base est sympa, mais c'est assez confus et certains passages sont totalement WTF.
Point positif : se lit vite
Point négatif : s'oublie vite

There is a narrative beat, a tone that is special to dramatic plays and almost exclusively there. That tone was captured in the film Before Sunrise. It makes this film captivatingly timeless. I’ve never read that narrative voice in a novel until I read Sleeping with the Enemy by Seth King. The dialogue and narrative seamlessly merge and create this tone that wrapped me like a shroud, because seeing what’s coming, knowing what’s coming – doesn’t mean you want it to come.

Nonetheless, that burning in the back of my throat their morning after made me wish for a better world. This nonsense we live with (too short, too tall, too skinny, too fat, too black, too white, too gay, too straight) is just that, nonsense. I close my eyes and breathe, “this too shall pass” (which is most definitely not a biblical quote). One day the world will continue to continue and young men like Wade and Thomas can truly have a happy life. Not an ending, but a life.

I expected this to be a fun read, and it was sort of. But like with the other books by the author, we got a liiittle bit of "lecture" too. (You know, like what it is to be gay, and coming out, etc.) From what I gathered about Seth King, is that for him it's important to "spread the word". I think of him as a revolutionary writer, which doesn't show in his writing style per se, but the stories he writes. And of course he made me cry again (just a bit, I wasn't full on bawling like with Liberty).

Bleh. This was boring and so fast paced. I think this was something the author had rolling around in his head and he needed to get it out. He got it out too fast and messily.

I had such high expectations because I love me some enemies to lovers.
