*** This review is for the Prequel novella only which didn't have a separate book listing ***

This is a 3.5 star read.

"There is something to be said for the night
The darkness holds a sense of promise, as if anything could happen
Maybe something good,
like a handsome stranger
Or something with snarling teeth
That whispers pretty things
as it eats you"

This long short story (or short novella) is a prequel lead-in to the author's Fear University series. I'm unsure whether to describe this as happening in an alternate reality or whether the story is simply a part of our universe albeit one which we are unaware of. The author uses dates after the war as chapter headings, but Fear University and the reason why it exists remains hidden from the world. To lay it bare ...... there are monsters everywhere, and they only come out at night. Aswangs! Yes ..... aswangs or 'swangs as the hunters call them are the name of the beasts and every time I said the word in my mind I couldn't help laughing .... although as monsters they're not even remotely funny.
I really enjoyed the story - there's an historical element to it, urban fantasy, thrills and, dare I say it, a touch of chaste romance.
It really is a riveting premise and I'm definitely adding the rest of the series to my never ending TBR list.

There were so many times when Tick Tock Massacre was often mentioned all throughout the Fear University series. A lot of times, the characters spoke and dread the event that happened decades ago, which infused fear and alarm to the students and hunters residing in the university.

Now, Meg Collett finally explains everything about Tick Tock Massacre in this 70-page novella, that was equally as horrific and illuminating as the other books in the series. Aswangs had been roaming the world in centuries, and one brave Irishman and his men had taken steps on how to capture, study and experiment them. But this venture cost a lot of lives, including the Bogrovs, the founder of Fear University and his daughter Margaret. Her twin sister, Mamie survived, but the horror was forever instilled in her mind.

Mamie had always been considered the lesser of the twin sister. Where Margaret was healthy, beautiful, active and strong, Mamie was the opposite. She'd always stayed hidden in her twin's shadow, until the legendary (almost blind) Irish hunter Dermot Kelly chose her. There's a hint of romance and a whole lotta bloodshed in this exciting prequel to one of my favorite series ever. A highly recommended read!

This short story  and can only be found in the Fear University book set on Amazon. The books included in the series are:

The opening two books keep the story going forward. In the first volume, Fear University, she learns to tap into the power her talent gives her; builds a relationship with the similarly-broken young hunter Luke, who is her mentor; discovers aswang saliva can make her feel pain; finds out who her father was; and has to go through a life-or-death test involving both her, and her best friend at FU, Sunny. The second, Killing Season, is a rather drastic change in approach, with Ollie, Luke and others sent north to Barrow for the winter break, when the aswang are most active. That was the location used for vampire action film 30 Days of Night, and serves the same kind of purpose here. However, it’s almost as much a whodunnit, with the large house which is the hunters’ base apparently home to a killer. Not helping matters: Max shows up in town.

Then there’s the third… I should probably have detected the change in approach, based entirely on the title: Monster Mine. For sadly, the series loses its edge entirely. Rather than turning into Harry Potter, it instead becomes something which combines the whiny angst of the Twilight series, with the Daddy issues from Star Wars. That’s about as appetizing as it sounds, and by the end, this was a chore to slog through.

She was the weak one. Well that’s what she had been told all of her life. Until he showed up and made her want more. More than she had been willing to settle for. More than she had ever hoped. We get the story of where it all began. The love of family. The loss, devastation. The cost was high even though she found herself in the process.
Tick Tock. . . their coming. Tick Tock. . . they’re here. Tick Tock. . . time has run out.
Action, answers, questions and so much more. It all changes and starts and ends right here. Great addition to the Fear University series.

Love this series and the characters. This author gives us a thrilling ride as we go through the intricacies of the University and all that are associated with it. Loads of excitement and action keep you turning the pages and diving into the various characters and their plots. This series got me interested in this author, her style kept me.

An interesting series of books. Ollie meets Luke and Hatter as she is walking home from work. Her life is about to change radically! This society is having to fight a war with creatures who have two sides to life. During the day they look human but at night they look like wolves/ unusual dogs. The creatures feed off fear and eating their victims. They have one tell which is the sound the emit.
Follow the story of Ollie who feels no pain and her growing relationship with Luke. The Fear University is run by Dean who really has some issues but he is really focused on Ollie to the point of wanting her dead. Learn about her past, Luke’s past and the possible future for her and aswangs.
There is a certain amount of violence in this story but the story line is good and there are plenty of twists and eye opening surprises. I did enjoy the trio of books and I recommend this book.

Fear University Series 1-3 Review

I am so glad I grabbed this collection because I loved it!
The characters are fierce, raw, and damaged but they completely threw me off guard with the depth of their determination and hope. The world the author created for them is dark and twisted but beautifully done and had me hooked from beginning to end.
There were a few inconsistencies throughout the books but they didn't stop me from enjoying the series. As a matter of fact before I even got to book three I had to buy the next two books in the series because I just HAVE to know what happens next.
But I will say even though the characters are teenagers the story does get very dark. So it might not be for readers that get upset easily.
But for me this was definitely a binge read and I definitely recommend it.

Throughout the entire Fear University series, the Tick Tock Massacre is mentioned and now the details come to light. Meg Collett has done justice to her readers by releasing this novella about that night and the gruesome massacre

Synopsis led me to believe this series was a fantasy. It is more horror than fantasy. Violent. Sex. and Torture

The first three books in the series, plus one novella in one book - very good deal.
Fear University - where the sons and daughters of generations of hunters are taught to fight against fear and monsters, the aswangs ... and then Ollie comes, a civilian, an orphan, with the courage and the heart of a hunter, and lots of secrets. The university decides to teach her, against the will of the old established and elitist hunter families.
The stories are way sadder and darker than I usually like, but Ollie, Luke, Sunny and Hatter, and yes, the Aswangs, grow on you after a while. Even if you don't specifically like them, at least in the beginning, they will gain your respect. There are so many twists and turns to the story in each book, so that the reader never knows what to expect next.
After finishing the third book, I absolutely love the main protagonists, and pity some of the so-called monsters. I actually have to ask myself: who are the monsters in this story?
I did not think I'd like the books when reading the first one, but I had to change my mind - but I needed something brighter in between the individual books. Still, I want to know how the story continues, and will definitely get the rest of them.

I am glad I am done with the box set. Too much emotional drama based on extreme psychological and physical abuse during upbringing. Really got tiresome. The ridiculous amount of physical abuse Ollie was subjected to was just unbelievable. I understand the not feeling pain stuff but if it is broke it wont work. Don't know how many bones she broke or concussions she suffered but she would jump up in an improbably short amount of time as if nothing happened. What is is she related to Wolverine or something?

I can see the attraction to it and maybe if the books were spaced out I might have enjoyed it more but I was not a fan overall.

Once started you had to keep going

It sucks you in to a world of strange and weird creatures and a way of dealing with this...a place of higher education. It gets deeper and darker with a lot of violence, killing and a friendship stronger than any bond. Not sure about contingency about who died? Just go with it. It would have been a pain of the books were individual, but as a set they work. Stayed up till early hours reading. Haven't done that for a long time.

Took me a bit as I read this stuff at the gym. The names are awful “Ollie, Sunny, Nyny (nee nee?) and Aswang with uh instead of A” jeez. I don’t think any of the swangs were female just hybrids so how does that work? Ollie was fairly nondescript but Sunny said she was beautiful. Hard to picture especially after her face was scarred. The angst was too much. Not enough detail such as how do any of these groups make money? I’m just glad it’s over.

Great story

I had the pleasure to read the three books with no interruptions i recommend this method for any reader interested. I gave a four star rating simply because the author missed the opportunity to fully clothe the straw man. Some events deserved a more in depth resolution. Still a fantastic if tale with a worthy addition to folkloric

Fantastic!

This series is complex, adventurous and keeps you hanging on as you go through it. I couldn’t put it down. And you finally get to see as you get through it how it came to be. It’s complex and a bit difficult to get into it but it’s like a psychological thriller but it’s so good. Definitely worth reading.
Thanks

Read the first book before seeing this set. The rest of the books were awesome and heartbreaking. Ollie and Luke with their friends go thru so much turmoil, it is hard to believe they keep on going. Supernatural readers will love these books.

I loved all 3 books and the novella was great! Seeing how things used to be (novella) and seeing what they became. The characters were wonderful. Ollie was really cool but I have to say Sunny was by far my favorite. Kind, gentle but strong when necessary, no matter the cost

Really a good series, though I had trouble with about a quarter or so of the last book. Gritty, emotionally demanding, with a mix of darkness and, not hope exactly, but perhaps life. Sunny was my favorite character and she easily had the most dynamic growth.

I did not know what I was getting into when I started reading this book series. It was dark, cruel, manipulative yet full of true friendships that could not be broken.
