War was once a simple thing for the warriors of Sais and Tanis, but the sudden reappearance of angels and demons have changed the meaning of the words friend and foe. An ancient evil returning to destroy all living things causes the longtime rivals to unite in order to prevent the fall of the world; however, the bitterness of their past rivalry hinders their progress. Hypierion tells the riveting story of how Prince Hondo of Tanis and Princess Theoris of Sais take on the daunting task of redeeming the past as well as securing the future. Together, the unlikely pairing must face hordes of demons, shocking revelations, and their own fears together in order to save the world.
If I had to pick a phrase to summarize Hypierion by Michaela Lowe, I think it would be “your standard fantasy.” What do I mean? I mean that if you like fantasy books, Hypierion will be just as enjoyable for you as it was for me. If you don’t like fantasy, you’ll probably want to pass on this one.
The plot hits all the general fantasy story beats. A dark lord grows stronger in the world, sending demons to wreak havoc on the innocent. Instead of the normal chosen one, here we have two chosen ones, Princess Theoris of the Sais Kingdom and and Prince Hondo of the Tan Kingdom. Both are heirs to the throne of their respective nation, and each nation hates the other with a passion only centuries of rivalry can instill.
