Tyndale is fond of a trick the Greeks called polyptoton, repeating a word but in a different form or part of speech. I have been a stranger in a strange land. Give us this day our daily bread. Judge not, that ye be not judged. Accidental repetition sounds clumsy and careless; intentional repetition sounds musical and meant.
But can often be cut, because the substance of the sentence makes the qualification clear enough. But using but to start a sentence is, whatever anyone else says, fine. It is short, sure-sounding and often clearer than an about-turn however halfway in. Use however only when you want to stress the word or phrase that precedes it….
