** THE PERFECT STOCKING FILLER FOR ANY SCIENCE LOVER/SCIENCE NERD/ASPIRING SCIENTIST. **
Part of the new Ladybird Expert series, Bubbles is a clear, surprising and entertaining introduction to the science of bubbles.
Bubbles are beautiful, ephemeral, fun, fragile, jolly and slightly unpredictable. We're all familiar with them, but we don't often ask what they actually are.
The great scientists of the Western world - Robert Hooke, Isaac Newton, Lord Rayleigh and more - studied bubbles seriously. They recognised that they had a lot to say about the nature of the physical world, and they poked, prodded and listened to find out what it was. In the years since, we've learned that this bulbous arrangement of liquid and gas does things that neither the gas or the liquid could do by itself.
Written by the celebrated physicist and oceanographer Helen Czerski, Bubbles explores how everything from the way drinks taste to the Earth's temperature are influenced by bubbles.
This book has a message: never underestimate a bubble!
Written by the leading lights and most outstanding communicators in their fields, the Ladybird Expert books provide clear, accessible and authoritative introductions to subjects drawn from science, history and culture.
For an adult readership, the Ladybird Expert series is produced in the same iconic small hardback format pioneered by the original Ladybirds. Each beautifully illustrated book features the first new illustrations produced in the original Ladybird style for nearly forty years.
Helen Czerski is a physicist at University College London’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and a science presenter for BBC. She writes a monthly column for BBC Focus magazine called “Everyday Science” that was shortlisted for a Professional Publishers Association Award.
this was surprisingly quite an interesting read??? what really caught my attention was how it’s an adult ver. of a ladybird book; i didn’t know they existed.
super short and simple yet informative, there's a lot more to the series and I would probably explore the rest of the titles! however, this is probably more for leisure reading; its not heavily detailed/scientific but just right to feed my poor non-sciency brain with some basic understanding lmaoooo and i love it sm.
reading about bubbles was a bubbly experience ((never thought i would read about them till today)) and i actually like how it starts with: "we're all familiar with them but we don’t often ask what they actually are" …which is so true??? that one sentence really slaps……and its already making me reflect a lot……................
overall i was thoroughly entertained and glad that i picked this up randomly from the library shelf :)
"but for all that technological wizardry, a bubble is still a delightful toy for everyone, something to giggle at, pop, play with and listen to. bubble baths, fizzy drinks, streaks of soap bubbles and the cheery babbling of a stream are here to stay. appreciate the bubbles in your life: they may be temporary but they are fascinating, surprising, charming & utterly beautiful" 🫧
This may seem like a soppy book about bubbles, but this is a Ladybird Expert book, and so covers bubbles in soap, cappuccino, champagne, pistol shrimps' claws, penguins' feathers, sonar, ultrasound and medicine. For what is essentially a science book, there are touches of humour and the whole thing reads in an interesting, informal and informative manner. The illustrations are all very appealing, in the usual Ladybird style. 5/5
A short and easy to read book about bubbles: what are they, and why they fascinate us. The author looks at all kinds of bubbles, from 'ordinary' soap bubbles to air bubbles in water, anti-bubbles and foam. The author shows why we find bubbles so fascinating and how we can discover more about the world from what bubbles can tell us.
A short and informative treatise about bubbles, their structure, how they are formed and the many uses of them in nature. Bubbles are a fascinating concept and I wish the author could give us a recipe for bubbles.
