Beyond Words: the Healing Power of Horses: Bridging the Worlds of Equine Assisted Therapy and Psychotherapy

Rate this book
Written by Dr. Alita Buzel, a much-admired psychologist with over thirty years clinical experience and a deep appreciation of the wisdom of horses, Beyond The Healing Power of Horses is not only a valuable resource for those already practicing equine psychotherapy but also a user-friendly introduction to this increasingly appreciated therapeutic technique. Dr. Buzel grounds her equine work in the world of psychology, which differentiates her from many of the equine professionals who come to this work via their experience with horses. She emphasizes the need for each member of the therapy team, the equine specialist and psychotherapist, to understand and appreciate the contribution and perspective of the other. Part I deals with equine experiential therapy from a psychological point of view. Each chapter covers a specific emotional topic, such as "feelings" and "trauma," beginning with a discussion of each issue and followed by suggestions for appropriate equine exercises. Part II concentrates on describing those target populations that are particularly amenable to equine psychotherapy, such as individuals with PTSD and addiction as well as sections devoted to children and adolescents. The challenges of each category are discussed, and appropriate treatment planning is reviewed. Part III is a photo-essay of the work described in Beyond Words. The legal requirements and ethical considerations, that are part of a professional therapeutic practice, are examined. These include topics such as liability, reporting requirements, and confidentiality (HIPPA). In addition, a brief description of some of the major credentialing/certifying agencies and organizations are presented including their theoretical orientation and requirements. This is an important resource that belongs on every equine therapist's shelf!
