But when strange events begin to occur upon her arrival, Melanie begins to realise that she, and the powers she fought so hard to keep hidden all these years, might be part of something a lot more sinister.

I wasn't expecting to start the year with a 2-star review, but here we are!

This book had so much potential- when you give me fantasy/superpowers mixed with modern-day, it's normally a hit! But I just wasn't as sucked into this as I hoped I would be.

I felt nothing towards the characters, even when horrific things happened to them, and I found the writing style to be quite grating. Every character seemed to flip between such varied emotions in a matter of seconds, and they all had to be doing something when they spoke. No one ever stood still and had a chat.

I kept persevering as it's quite a short book, and I'm glad I didn't give up on it. But I sadly won't be picking up the second book.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.
We follow Melanie as she goes from being a normal girl and student to learning of her special abilities. It was very face paced and exciting. I hope there is a book 2!

The Ascension of Melanie Winters is one of those books I could not decide upon a rating for. A part of me wanted to give this a single star, whereas another part of me said it was worthy of a two-star rating. In the end, I opted with the generous rating. Even so, a part of me continues to debate my rating.

For me, The Ascension of Melanie Winters had a lot of potential. It was a fun idea, there was a lot that could have been done with the story, but I was never sucked into it. For me, there was too much tell and not enough show. I kept waiting to experience the big things, to be sucked into them, but it never really occurred. Add in the fact I felt nothing towards the characters, and it was only curiosity that had me continuing to read this one.

Evidently, the curiosity was strong as I happily finished this one. It’s a short read, one I managed to complete in a couple of hours, and there’s the chance of many interesting things occurring in the future books. As it stands, I doubt I’ll be reading the future books, but for those who enjoy this one there seems to be a lot of potential.

Overall, this one wasn’t for me.

Oh. My. God. One of my blogger friends has only gone and written a book, hasn't she? I am so insanely proud of Holly for writing and publishing her debut novel. And I was honoured that she asked me to review a copy on my blog!

As soon as I received The Ascension of Melanie Winters*, I was eager to dive straight in. I first had to finish my current read, though, so it took me a few days to get around to Holly's new book. I wish I hadn't delayed, though!

I'm not usually a science fiction/supernatural kinda girl. I read some Stephen King, and I've read a few sci-fi/supernatural novels on review. But it is not my usual genre, shall we say, so I really wasn't sure what to expect from The Ascension of Melanie Winters.

From the first page, though, I was hooked. Although there were supernatural elements to this novel, it was also a love story and an action novel. It was a real page-turner, and every chapter left me wanting more.

I got through this book in a few hours. In part because it's short, at only 140-something pages, but also because once I'd picked up the book I just couldn't put it down! In fact, I was so absorbed in the story that I even forgot to feed my cat! Needless to say, he was not amused...

The Ascension of Melanie Winters was a five star read and my only criticism of Holly's debut novel? That it ended too soon. In my head I was screaming "nooooo!" at the ending. I now cannot wait for Holly's follow-up novel. No pressure though, Holly *wink wink* If you're looking for a gripping, creepy, fast-paced novel, with romance, supernatural and lots of action, then look no further. The Ascension of Melanie Winters is the book for you!

The premise of this novel has potential. Unfortunately, the execution let its promise down for me.

The pacing of the novel is generally consistent and well-done. The action scenes move along well, and while there are moments when I thought description could be embedded more effectively, these were minimal in the scheme of things. There is ample description to help visualise immediate setting and action.

The world-building could have been improved significantly. It took me until almost halfway through the novel to realise that it was set in the UK. I think being more descriptive about the setting and cultural elements would have anchored this better in a time and place and made it a much more vivid reading experience. Being extra careful about using British English spelling (both practise and practice were used) and slang would have helped immensely.

The character development also could have been improved. Melanie is inconsistent - vacillating between a mostly independent young woman and child-like behaviour. (This may be a specific choice as a reaction to trauma, but, if so, the author did not do a good job of conveying it or showing an event that would precipitate such a regression). I didn't find any of the other characters was fleshed out enough - they read largely as caricatures. Heather and Laurie seem to know too much and not enough, paradoxically, at the same time. (It's possible that the short length of the novel resulted in character development being short-changed and that's a very unfortunate choice).

For me, the most fascinating character was Dai. Not only were his personality and accent unique, but his relationship with Nathan was skillfully illustrated in a few short exchanges. He really jumped off the page for me.

All in all, I found the novel reads more like an early draft - there's a lot of detail missing that would really have brought the characters, the setting, and the narrative to life. There are some logistical holes in the story. Clearer, more focused characters (maybe better developed backstories) would have amped up tension in relationships, as well as generated more empathy for the characters, as well as made the narrative more engaging. (I didn't really know them well enough to care overmuch about what happened to them).

The writing itself would benefit from additional editing, over and above improvements to character- and world-building. In addition to the generic language (rather than specific to Wales/Britain), the writing tends towards the repetitive. I lost count of the number of times where a word or root would be repeated within a sentence or two in the same paragraph. I think reducing this repetition, as well as reducing the tendency to plop down a block of description (rather than adding adjectives to action sentences) would have made the language flow better.

There's definitely interesting material here to mine. I think the premise is very interesting and has a lot of potential. There are a lot of intriguing thematic elements that could develop from these bones. It's a good start to a series.

I received a copy of this book through Voracious Readers Only.

“She hadn’t meant to pull apart a building”
That could be the best opening line of any book I have ever read. Talk about a hook…there was no way that I wasn’t going to read the rest of the book at that point.
Holly Stockport’s debut novel, “The Ascension of Melanie Winters,” is the tale of a young university student in Brittan who has recently discovered that she possesses some very interesting powers: she can move things with her mind. The story leads our heroine, Melanie, on an exciting, and sometimes dangerous, journey where she discovers that she is not alone.
As I said, that opening line had me hooked. I was very excited to find out about this young lady and her powers. I was a little disappointed shortly after, however. Don’t get me wrong…the concept and story line are really interesting. It’s the delivery that is the problem.
First off, there were no chapters. That made reading a little tricky. Also, the formatting for Kindle was…not good. As an independently published author I can attest to the frustration formatting can cause, but Amazon has some really good tools to help. Kindle Create, for example, does a good job of walking you through the process. It’s still not perfect, but better than just uploading a Word document and hoping for the best.
Another problem I had was the actual storytelling. For example, the actions and emotions of the characters were very exaggerated. They could go from terrified to devastated to furious then to amazed all in the space of a page or two. A character could be fearing for their life one second, then “stroll” across the room the next. For me, this makes it very hard to believe the character. Just too much for my taste.
Overall, though, I enjoyed the book and will probably read the next one when she puts it out. I just hope the author will stop trying to maximize every scene and just let it flow.

The Ascension of Melanie Winters has a strong hook line. It has the plot points that swing the story in a new direction. There are a couple of surprising twists in the tale and a couple of expected ones as well. I think the characters have been introduced at the right time and drive the story forward. What I personally liked about the protagonist, Melanie Winters, is that she is not too keen on using her powers and at the same time she is curious and eager to find out what things she can do with them. I also liked that the author has kept the relationship between Melanie and Nathan (her love interest?) quite open. However, I am tempted to write here that they should have kissed on their first date or at least tried to before the bad guys show up.

Okay, what I would have liked in the story is to read about how Melanie discovers her powers. I think that is important. Readers do relate to this process, at least I do while reading a novel or even while watching a movie. Also, the opening scene, which is wonderfully written and described, should have been include in the climax. And yes, I would have liked a better formatted ebook. For instance, there should be no newline in between paragraphs unless there is a scene/location change. And the paragraphs should be indented. I hope to read a better formatted second book in the series.

Regardless of these formatting errors, the book is quite readable and the story holds the reader's interest till the end. I enjoyed reading the book. For the first novel in the series, the story is just right. The big fireworks can be introduced in the following books.

This week I was lucky enough to win not one, but two book giveaways on Twitter! The first of my wins is The Ascension of Melanie Winters by Holly Stockport. I was really chuffed to win the giveaway, not only because it’s great to win books but because I’m now getting to review a publication by a fantastic Welsh author.

The book arrived really quickly and just as I was finishing up another book so I dug straight into it. I was immediately drawn in and had to persuade myself to put the book down that night as my alarm was due to go off in five hours and I need at least seven hours sleep to function.

The Ascension of Melanie Winters introduces us to a young woman – Melanie Winters (I bet none of you saw that coming) – who has superhuman powers. She has spends her days trying to hide her powers but has a run in with someone at University, and in that moment everything changes.

This book explores many themes including genetic engineering, the rise of massive unregulated corporations, and the challenges faced by young people in today’s society (regardless of whether or not they have superhuman powers!).

I’m not going to say too much more because I don’t want to spoil it but I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced debut novel – it was dark, gritty, tense, and left me wanting more. I sincerely hope Holly plans on writing more, because I, for one, need to know what happens.

Many thanks to Holly for sending me this book. Just to add, Holly did NOT ask me to review this book - I chose to do so as I really enjoyed it.

Being that this is Ms. Stockport's debut novel, I am very excited for her continued projects and writing! I appreciate how the character, Melanie, develops over the course of the story, ultimately gaining more confidence and strengthening her self-identity. Melanie makes a valiant attempt to be "normal" and settle into a routine, but her special "gift" will not be quieted. I look forward to a sequel-perhaps that is in the works!

I did a book exchange with the author.

Melanie Winters is your typical uni student, living in shared accommodation and worrying about if she has time for breakfast before her lecture, but she harbours a secret. Able to move things using telekinesis she couldn’t be more different to her peers. Whilst trying to protect a fellow student Melanie finds herself caught up in trouble and inadvertently causes a serious accident which forces her to leave university life behind.

Living back at home with her Mum in Wales, Melanie decides she needs to try to fit in and be ‘normal’ and manages to bag herself a job at a local shop, where she meets handsome Nathan. The two hit it off immediately, growing ever closer the more time they spend together. Despite this new seemingly normal existence her life has other ideas and keeps throwing strange, unexpected scenarios in her path. Before long she realises her powers are putting her whole family in danger and she must flee from Nathan and the life she has built, whilst trying to make sense of who and what she is….

Melanie is such a relatable character, just an everyday girl trying to find her place in the world and fit in. She is a wonderful strong female protagonist, which for me really makes a novel – GIRL POWER all the way! She has a strong sense of right and wrong and follows her heart regardless of the consequences of her actions. This book sees her begin to learn and understand about her past and who she is, taking the reader along on her journey of discovery as she gleans snippets of information about her extraordinary powers.

There are some fabulous characters introduced in this book which have only just had the surface scratched in terms of background information etc and I’m hoping that a sequel would help them develop and answer the questions I am desperate to know. Even though the book is fairly short (143 pages) it is jam packed with fast-paced action making it a real page turner – I genuinely couldn’t put it down, I kept trying to but was drawn back in as I HAD to know what happened.

I found this book to be quite a subtle sci-fi story running parallel to the love story between Melanie and Nathan. Despite it not being a genre I read much of it really captured my imagination and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. My only criticism is that it ended too soon and of course on a MASSIVE cliff hanger, leaving me dangling in limbo waiting to find out what’s in store for Melanie next! I really hope that there is a sequel in the pipeline and sooner rather than later please as I’m desperate to read the next instalment.

The Ascension of Melanie Winters is a superb debut novel for Holly and is living proof that following your dreams and passions pays off. This is a book she should rightfully feel incredibly proud of and as a fellow blogger a massive inspiration for me to keep pushing and pursue my own dreams.

Holly sent me this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

From the very first page I was gripped! Absolutely incredible story line & so many twists, some I expected, some I didn’t see at all. And that ending!!!
I hope this is just the beginning for Melanie Winters & there are more books to come because I would read every one!

I have filmed a more in-depth (spoiler filled - there is a warning before the spoilers begin) review for my YouTube channel: https://t.co/6NleVN0vow

For a debut novel, Holly has done amazing & I’m excited to see what’s next!

Reread in 2019 in preparation to read The Evolution of Melanie Winters! Completely gripped from page one & every event still blew my mind even though I’ve read this before. This is done so well & has completely changed my mind about self-published debut novels! Absolutely adore this story & I’m going to get straight into Evolution now!
