Grace Summer lands herself in a melon load of trouble when she becomes torn between the boy of her dreams and the boy almost next door. As the newly-crowned Watermelon Queen, she is thrust into the spotlight, meets the dreamy Warren Hartley, and continues trying to get over an accident that rocked her world. Mix in working with Beau Baron who Grace happens to fight with just about as much as breathing and the metaphorical sparks fly.
Like most things in life, Grace must learn to take the good with the bad. While the good is the handsome and fun Warren Hartley, the bad is Beau Baron—or at least being around his annoying and rude self way more than she would like. For Beau, Grace is nothing more than aggravating and an irritating reminder from the night of the accident. Tensions soar as Grace and Beau fight to love themselves and maybe, just maybe, each other.

Loving Grace was such a sweet YA story. I loved the characters and how the story revolved around watermelons (she was the Watermelon Queen). I was surprised by how gripping the story was and I really grew to care about what happened with Grace.

I loved the romance between Grace and a certain guy, but I didn't like the love triangle. ;) I knew who she should end up with nearly right away and did not like the other guy at all.

All in all, Loving Grace was a great read. I really enjoyed reading it and recommend it to fans of YA fiction. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Loving Grace

April Smith

Wow, all I can say is, this story gave me the feels all over! Keep the tissues close by as you are reading LOVING GRACE by April Smith. She will have your emotions all over the place. Once I started reading, it was very hard to stop! The twists and turns made it impossible to put down, as I had to know what was going to happen to Grace after so much family heartache! What an awesome story. All of April's characters feel genuine and relatable and put your emotions on one heck of a roller coaster ride. As you are reading, you will find yourself cheering for all of them, praying they can work out their problems and be happy once again. You will also wonder how much heartache a person can stand before they completely break down and shatter.

LOVING GRACE is all about family and the past and the secrets that come out are heart tugging. It had me wanting to eat watermelon with each and every page. Grace is the newly crowned Watermelon Queen and it was fun getting a behind the scenes introduction into the world of watermelons and pageantry. I had to know what was going to happen to Grace and Beau and all the secondary characters. Grace is shattered after a family tragedy that leaves her feeling so alone in the world. LOVING GRACE is a sweet young adult contemporary story that will hold you hostage until the very last page. Once you start reading, it will be very hard to put down!

LOVING GRACE is without a doubt one of the better YA books I've read in 2018 so far. I was instantly emotionally invested in all of the characters. April Smith really knows how to write about family drama, heartbreak, and forgiveness. It was interesting to see Grace torn between two guys, one who she knew since she was younger and the other, a new guy in her life. Which one would she choose? I can not wait to read more by this wonderful and heart tugging author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from JustRead Publicity Tours. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (less)

I’m not sure what it is about YA Contemporary books, but I typically really enjoy that genre. This was a fun, light read that made me in the mood for summer and watermelon eatin’. The writing did seem a bit choppy at times, but I did like Grace. She was a bit stubborn at times, but I think it also had to do with everything she’s gone through. It was a bit predicable with who Grace would end up with and who the “bad boy” was, but that’s a YA contemporary for you! ;)
Overall, it was really cute, clean, and a fun, relaxed read. :)

This was a super cute and sweet story (no pun intended) about a girl named Grace who becomes the Watermelon Queen. Grace is dealing with a lot of difficult things in her life and finds herself caught between two boys…one who she finds super dreamy and the other who drives her crazy.

Under the surface of the fun and cute scenes of watermelon pageants and banquets is a plot with depth and drama. The character of Grace was lovely and the way she handled her grief was very realistic. There were moments when I just wanted to wrap her in a hug.

I enjoyed the story but found that the pacing was a bit slow at first and took some time to get going.

This is a very clean, sweet story that teenagers would really enjoy. It’s a great alternative to the mainstream contemporary that is in the market today.

Loving Grace has left me with some seriously mixed feelings. I love that it's clean Christian YA romance, so it's safe for everyone to read and is a great alternative to much of the highly sexualized offerings in the YA genre. The setting—on a watermelon farm and the watermelon beauty queen circuit—is unique and fun, and I loved the interaction between Grace and the Baron family. Author April Smith obviously knew what she was talking about regarding watermelon queens, and that entire aspect of the plot had a ring of authenticity.

It's very common in YA novels for the main character's romantic relationships to be at the forefront of the plot, and this is true of Loving Grace. There are three boys in Grace's life who could be potential partners: Bennett Baron, the boy she's had a crush on forever; Warren Hartley, a boy she meets on the watermelon circuit; and Beau Baron, her late brother's best friend and her longtime nemesis. Unfortunately the romance aspect of this novel is what didn't quite work for me.

I get that teenage girls are sometimes oblivious to what's in front of them. I get that when a guy pays attention to you, you might be blind to his faults. But Grace's naivete when it came to Warren definitely pushed the bounds of credulity. Fairly late in the novel, she does begin connecting with Beau, and at that point, I started enjoying the romance aspect more. There are some really fun, cute scenes with Beau and Grace, and I would have liked the story more had the love triangle aspect not been so prominent.

I also noticed some continuity errors, and I think they are obvious enough that many readers would catch them, such as the site of an event switching from Atlanta to Orlando and one character seemingly vaporizing in the middle of a scene. I don't normally comment on things like this, but these instances were so glaring that they completely pulled me out of the story.

Overall, I did enjoy Loving Grace, and I think that it's a great alternative to much of what's out there. I also think that, as a teen girl, I wouldn't have been nearly as critical a reader. So I don't know that I'd recommend this to my girlfriends, but I do think it's a great book for teens.

After a tragedy in her young life, Grace Summer is ready to leave her melon-choly behind her. With a push from her friends (who happen to be her bosses), she becomes the region’s watermelon queen.

The travel and clothes are a few perks, and the padding to her college savings doesn't hurt, but spending time with Beau Baron as her chaperone is making her mad enough to spit seeds. He always seems to be interrupting her precious time with Warren Hartley.

Grace is a likable character. Her youth makes her naïve in some things but her heart shines through most of her decisions. Old and new friends converge to show Grace that it’s okay to live her life to the fullest.

Loving Grace is a refreshingly sweet and clean story for adolescent girls with a focus on friendship, God, and being true to yourself. The romance element is there but is not the entire focus. And while predictable at times, it is the kind of predictable you want to happen!

April Smith takes readers behind the scenes of the watermelon industry and had me craving the summer treat a few times. Grace and the Barons are characters I could hang out with.

A sweet YA contemporary story with a little bit of romance and a whole lot of watermelon, Loving Grace by April Smith is a delightful summer-y read.

When Grace Summer becomes the Watermelon Queen, the readers get a peek behind the scenes of the watermelon industry. With traveling and promoting, plus marketing a new product, Grace’s role is one to take seriously. Her passion for the industry is endearing, and it’s fun to follow her summer experience with the Barons, her sponsors and friends.

I do wish the character and relationship development had been a little more fleshed out within the story. Grace deals with a personal tragedy and a love triangle, which naturally stir up a host of emotions, and as she processes everything, there seem to be jumps in emotion rather than seamless, authentic growth. To me, this felt disjointed and I would have appreciated seeing more of the in-between aspects.

Still, Loving Grace is a cute, uplifting story of friendship, faith, and watermelons. It could very well please a contemporary-loving reader, so if you’re looking for a fun way to pass an afternoon or two, check it out.

Brief description from the back of the book:
Grace Summer lands herself in a melon load of trouble when she becomes torn between the boy of her dreams and the almost boy next door. As the new Watermelon Queen she is thrust into the spotlight where she meets Warren Hartley all while still trying to get over an accident that rocked her world. She works with Beau Baron and they seem to fight at just about everything and yet the sparks fly. Grace must learn to take the good with the bad. Warren is the good because he is handsome and fun, while Beau is the bad because he is annoying and rude. Tensions soar as Grace and Beau fight to love themselves and maybe each other.

My thoughts:
“Loving Grace” is a wonderful Young Adult book that you can easily share with your daughter or granddaughter without fear of explicit language and sex scenes.
Grace appears to be a well-balanced normal young adult with all the issues young adults face today and a little more. She is torn between two boys in her life. Will it be Warren Hartley or Beau Baron? Why is her lack of trust so great? These are questions that will answered as you turn the pages of Grace’s journey as she looks beyond the top layer to find out what God’s plans are for her. You will find that her deep-rooted faith keeps her well-grounded when making decisions and also while learning to love herself.

This book would be an excellent resource for talking to your young adult about dating and accepting yourself for who you are. I highly recommend it.

Loving Grace by April Smith is a "melon load" of sweet! So stinking cute!

Seriously, if you're looking for a sweet read, then Loving Grace should be added to you TBR, like, now. The story flows, reading easy and fast. While it may seem to scream "SUMMER READ," I think it's perfect for any season. Spring... Summer... Autumn... When you wish Summer was here (#goawaywinter)... I also found the watermelon farm and pageant to be a fun, fresh setting! I actually felt like learned some stuff, too. No joke! I might even try to grill some watermelon...

Grace is such a teen! I loved that about her! She's hardworking and sweet, but she could be sarcastic and pop an attitude like no one's business! She's just a girl who loves God and is trying to navigate the ups and downs of life after a family tragedy. The aforementioned family tragedy didn't overshadow the book, and the story still felt fun and sweet despite the heartbreaking heaviness of those scenes. Grace's relationship with God just flowed through the story, but her mistakes and emotions will have readers young and old alike empathizing with her. This coming-of-age story is filled with so many examples of true love that my romantic heart could just burst from happiness! And for me, that's the best part!

Four Stars ~ Loving Grace is sure to sweeten any reader's day with a gooey heart smile! To my knowledge, Loving Grace is a standalone novel, but the author has already made a fan out of me! I'll be looking forward to whatever April Smith writes next!

Loving Grace by April Smith is a fun summer read with heartwarming themes of hope, young love, and “letting go, and letting God.”

After going through a horrific tragedy, Grace Summers has withdrawn from life and is only just beginning to live “normally” again. When her employers offer to sponsor her to compete for “Midwest Watermelon Queen,” at first, Grace is hesitant (particularly since it would involve spending way too much time with their incredibly annoying son), but eventually decides to take the chance anyway.
I really enjoyed tagging along with Grace in her journey as a Watermelon Queen, where she finds love, and, along the way, learns to trust God with her heartache and with her future.

Things that stuck out to me…

I especially liked the way that the author portrayed Grace’s faith. It felt very authentic and so relatable and "real."

I also really enjoyed getting a look into the “Watermelon World.” It was fun, as a reader, to see all the different aspects of Grace’s life, not only on the farm where she works, but also as she travels the country as a Watermelon Queen.

And, last but not least, check out that cover! It's gorgeous and fits the story to perfection! #majorcoverlove

Loving Grace gets four stars from me. It was thoroughly enjoyable, funny, and the sweet romance was adorable and so fun to watch as it developed.

I would recommend this book those who enjoy clean inspirational reads, young adult, and contemporary reads.

This was a cute story about romance and watermelons with a serious element as Grace was grieving and having a hard time dealing with it. There was a fun love/hate relationship with the boy next door story line and also a secondary romance happening between his brother and another girl, which was also amusing. I liked the strong faith element as prayer was important to Grace; I especially liked how she turned to God when she was feeling heartbroken toward the beginning of the story. It seemed like those moments tapered off near the end of the story, though there was a scene where she was in church and she realized she couldn't find happiness in another person, only in God and remembering what He did for her. I thought she was a little naive to believe Warren, especially when everyone was warning her about him. She should have at least tried to find out more about him. Sometimes she made questionable choices but then I also liked that she wasn't too perfect. I liked the amusing aspects to the story and I liked Grace and Beau a lot. Beau also talked about his faith; he seemed like such a great guy with how he tried to protect Grace and in how he respected her. It was interesting to learn more about the watermelon industry but sometimes it got a little detailed. I would recommend this story if you like young adult light romance.

The main character, Grace is still grieving over the loss of her immediate family. She lives with her grandpa and works for the Barons, who are lifelong friends of the family, at Melon Ridge Farms. Pamela Baron, the mother of two boys and a former Watermelon Queen herself, offers to sponsor Grace in the Watermelon pageant. Knowing from experience the whirlwind adventure, travel, and financial benefits that comes with being chosen as Watermelon Queen, Mrs Baron doesn't take no for an answer. As Watermelon Queen of the Midwest, Grace has various sponsor responsibilities for radio and print advertisements, and at fairs and Fresh Supermarkets across the US. The story is a Christian Contemporary Romance that follows Grace through the summer as she learns to start to live again after loss specifically with prayer and the support of friends and forcing herself to stay active. I didn't even know watermelon pageants were a thing, or that watermelons were so versatile. I loved the realness of the character relationships and feelings in the situations that arose. There are so many romance situations in YA books that drive me crazy because their lack of innocence. I LOVE the budding feelings portrayed in this story and the PG message it portrays to teenage girls.

I thought Loving Grace was a sweet Christian YA novel and I enjoyed the plot line and interactions between the characters, especially the boys : Beau and Bennett. The author brought Christian aspects into this book without it being overbearing or taking over the entire plot of the book. The writing was well organized and well thought out. I honestly had no idea that there were such things as Watermelon Queens or pageants in the farming world. The only thing that truly bugged me about this book was the fact that the main character Grace, was so naive and so painfully fit the stereotype of a pageant queen. She was oblivious to the fact that her best friend was in love with her and oblivious to the fact that the guy she liked was an outstanding jerk. She seemed to be flighty with her own emotions and was more focused on her outfits and hair style and impressing boys than she was with dealing with her emotions, caring about the people that loved her (she was more annoyed with them than anything), and being a successful business woman. I don’t need to love the main character in the books I read, and Beau’s character made up for Grace’s in my opinion, so I ended up giving this 3.5/5 stars. I would recommend this to young Christian teens because I do remember feeling like Grace at that point in my teen years, maybe I am just too old now to appreciate her character. I would also recommend this to anyone who enjoys Christian YA contemporaries, especially those who can appreciate a rural setting.

Loving Grace by April Smith

Loving Grace brings together all the best elements of a country summer. The cover fits the story so perfectly! It was very interesting to get a glimpse of the many aspects a melon grower’s life, including the various regional and national watermelon associations. I had never thought about these things before.

I have now read enough about pageants to now know that they are only partly about appearance. That was brought home so much more in this book than any others that I recall reading. It was so refreshing to not have the story full of catty girls doing everything they can to win. The emphasis was much more on the work involved in being the Watermelon Queen.

I hesitate to mention this, but I do not like watermelon. Regardless, I certainly liked reading Loving Grace and highly recommend it for teens and adults alike.

I enjoyed reading Loving Grace. It was easy to read and I learned about the watermelon industry, which was interesting.
Grace is a slightly flawed rising high school senior who works for a neighboring watermelon farm. The Baron family that owns the farm are old family friends. Grace has suffered tragedy in her young life and relies on the support of her grandfather and the Baron's to help her through. She is like a daughter to Mrs. Baron, but one of the Baron sons does not view Grace as a sister. Can Grace get past what she sees as the bad attitude and rudeness of Beau Baron? Can she let go of the past the she shares with Beau so she can look to the future?
What will Grace learn about the grace she's already received from Christ? What will she learn about extending Grace?
This is a well written young adult book with characters that are real and honest. I would definitely recommend this as a clean read for middle and high school girls.

How refreshing to read a wholesome, enlightening, and adorable YA book without delving into a sinful and corrupt plot. Loving Grace, by April Smith, deals with credible issues that young people face within Christian morals and upbringings.

Grace Summer faces normal teenage challenges, such as passion, romance, and allowing her truth—and the truth God chooses for her—to come to the surface. She reveals her heart and personality through a young, Christian viewpoint, and faces the trials of growing up and finding love, forgiveness, and self.

This story has a charming plot, setting, and characters, told in first person present tense, and is strong in dialogue. The pacing grows slightly slower than I prefer, but shares a wonderful message that mothers and daughters alike will enjoy. I will be watching for new work by this author.

April Smith's debut Loving Grace is a sweet YA romance. I enjoyed how the novel centered around the watermelon world. It made me long for a nice slice of watermelon.

The story line was a quick and fun read. Ms. Smith creates great tension full of twists and turns that you don't see coming and keep you reading.

All of the characters were well developed which made you care about them and what happened to them.

My Bottom Line:

Loving Grace is a perfect book for teen girls who want clean romance. The story moves at a nice pace which keeps you reading. The world of watermelon farming and harvesting is both authentic and interesting. The romantic triangle that Grace finds herself in is one that I believe teen girls would relate to. I didn't come across anything that I would consider questionable for a teenager.

Besides the clean romance the spiritual thread is evident yet not overwhelming.

I highly recommend this book.

What a delightful read! I had no idea there was this whole Watermelon culture out there. April Smith brings us a delightful story that is not only for young adults. Her characters are loveable, sometimes you want to smack them (one character in particular) but mostly, what stood out to me the most was the relationship between Grace and Beau as it grows and changes was really special. There was one scene that had me roaring with laughter, (photo shoot scene) and then there were scenes that had me sighing in delight, and all the emotions in between where one character was being a horrible person, and I was cheering for Grace and Beau all the way. Grace’s healing from her traumatic past is handled with grace and realism. This book is about friendship, healing and unconditional love, and how we sometimes don’t see our most treasured relationships and people right under our noses. Great book.

Loving Grace is an Young Adult novel that echoes the novels of the 80's and early 90's.

Written from a teenager's point of view, we see the ups and downs, the angst, and the indecisions that only come with those teenage years.

Although slow and slightly choppy in the beginning, the writing and storyline evened out and flowed extremely well. With Loving Grace the reader is immersed into the world of the Watermelon pageants and watermelon farms, complete with the expectations and responsibilities of each.

At times it read as though some points within the story seemed contrived; but, they paled in contrast to the whole story. This isn't a simple romance, but a story of forgiveness, growth, and acceptance.

Each chapter brought me a little closer to the truth and what kept Grace from being trusting of Beau. And it is a doozy! The emotional depth portrayed was well written and I felt compassion and empathy for both characters.

With all the YA books out there that seem to highlight the immorality of this world, Loving Grace not only places importance on the Christian lifestyle, but it shows that there is honor in remaining pure and true to the Christian faith in all things.

For conservative readers, there is a point where a certain political figure is mentioned and that might cause some raised eyebrows. This also dated the novel, but it didn't detract from the story so I hope readers will not hold that against the book.

I hold this book in high esteem and will gladly recommend it for readers of all ages. How nice to see the beautiful style of true young adult books again!

This book was adorable! I loved it! Was it predictable at times? Yes. Did I love the "Love Triangle? Not really. Was the book still adorable? Yes!!!

The main character, Grace Summer, was a breath of fresh air. I totally knew who she would eventually end up with but I loved the journey getting there. The whole Watermelon concept had me craving watermelons the whole time I read this book. I've been snacking on them most days since reading this gem.

I don't know if I was just extremely ready to read this type of book or if it was really just that good but I certainly did enjoy it! I'm so glad it was sent my way!

Loving Grace: A Novel by April Smith is a sweet and sentimental love story about a girl, Grace Summer, who is torn between two boys: Beau Baron and Warren Hartley. It is a fun, breezy read, allowing you to escape into Grace’s world and follow the young woman’s journey. Grace faces trials, but she relies on her faith during the tough times. The book is wonderfully grounded in strong moral values, and the choices Grace must make provide good lessons for Smith’s readers. All in all, Loving Grace is a well-written novel with a solid pace. It is the kind of book that makes you want to enthusiastically turn the next page!

Loving grace is a novel geared toward young adults with real issues that young adults could face today . I am grateful that there is content for our young adults to read with a Christian perspective .

This book touches on emotions, dealing with identity, love, grief, patience and character . what I love about it the most is no matter the circumstances the characters in the novel were faced with they continued to press forward and did not allow their present situation to hold them back.

Totally will make a great gift for young adults who love to read.

I received an advance copy of this book for review from Ambassador International.

I thoroughly enjoyed this adorable story about Grace! She is a sweet character to get to know, and I thought it was fun to learn more about the watermelon industry and also some of the work that goes into being a watermelon queen and promoting the industry. This is the perfect summer story to pick up, with it's sweet romance. I highly recommend this one!

Fun read! This is not a genre I generally read much in, but was recommended by a friend so I gave it a shot. I am glad I did.
The characters are interesting to the point that I want to read more about the lives of the other Queens.
I liked that the fact that it is “Christian” is a seamless part of the story and not something that feels fake or forced.

"Lord, the Bible says You heal the brokenhearted and bind their wounds."

"I don't know if I should be doing this." "Grace, you're going to be fine. Don't let the past stop you. God has plans for you."
