Clearly more focused on the New Testament than the Old
I like to read through the Bible each year, which is why I was attracted to this devotional that claimed to take you through the entire Bible. It started out okay, but then I noticed the author was skipping a lot of really good stuff in the Old Testament -- often several chapters at a time -- which made it difficult to read at a consistent pace that covered all of the chapters. When I got into the New Testament, though, the author went more slowly. He frequently camped on two or three verses from one New Testament chapter, which was a bit frustrating.
I was also somewhat disappointed with the lack of depth in this book. I expected more "meat" from Chuck Smith, the founder of the Calvary Chapel movement. After all, they brought inductive Bible study memorization back into vogue. I experienced very few "ah hah moments" reading this devotional and highlighted little of its content, since there weren't many remarkable points within its pages.
If you are looking for a devotional that will take you through the entire Bible in a year at a comfortable and consistent pace, this is not it. If it's depth and new revelation you desire, try the devotionals compiled from writings by such men as A.W. Tozer or Smith Wigglesworth. You'll find a lot more noteworthy material there!
This devotional book is powerfully written. It contained nuggets to remember throughout the day and beyond. Chuck Smith was a powerful and godly teacher whose wisdom and legacy remains.
I love this Devotional Book. This is the first Devotional Book I have ever finished. This book was not boring at all. I have read a lot of books via Chuck Smith, and I must say he never has disappoint me. I definitely will purchase a hard copy of this book. I have bookmarked, highlighted many pages in the Kindle/Digital version. I even took notes. This is truly a must-have read.
