Bohemian Trilogy #3

Book of the Just

Rate this book
After centuries of searching, Mouse now has everything she’s ever wanted within her reach—a normal life, a lover, a brother. What will she risk to keep them?

Cherished by a Father, coveted by a king, loved by an almost-priest; tormented by demons, tortured by a madman, hunted by a cult, hounded by her father. Mouse has survived it all. But then, she was never just a girl.

Despite Mouse’s power, her father always wanted a son—and now, at long last, he has him. And Mouse has a brother, someone else in the world just like her. Though she’s never met him, the hope of what they might mean for each other tugs at her soul, even as it terrifies her lover, Angelo.

Hiding among a tribe of the Martu in the isolation of the Australian outback near the edges of Lake Disappointment, Mouse and Angelo have seemingly evaded at least one of the predators hunting them. Carefully dropping bogus breadcrumbs across Europe, they misdirect the Novus Rishi, a ruthless cult that wants Mouse as the ultimate weapon in their battle against evil. But when unnerving dreams start to plague Angelo, and the ancient beings of the Martu’s Dreaming send prophetic warnings that include visions of Mouse at her father’s side, the two lovers realize it’s time to act. With nowhere left to run, Mouse and Angelo prepare for a last showdown with their enemies. As they chase after legendary ancient weapons ensconced in the ages old battle between good and evil, Mouse and Angelo must each decide if a final victory is worth the cost.

Book of the Just continues Mouse’s story after The Devil’s Bible and completes the journey she started so long ago in Bohemian Gospel . Imbued with a rich sense of history, magic, and mythology, this explosive final installment in Mouse’s journey will keep you captivated until the very end.

Book of the Just by Dana Chamblee Carpenter is the third and final installment in the Bohemian Gospel trilogy. The series follows the life of Mouse an immortal, whose father is the devil.

Reading the final book in this series was a bittersweet experience for me as I both wanted to know how Mouse’s journey ends but was sad that this would be the last time we’d see and read Mouse’s story.

Throughout the series Mouse’s struggle for her humanity, for her soul, has been a driving force in her life. For 700 years she has just survived but in The Devil’s Bible (Book 2) Mouse meets Angelo who with his love and support teaches Mouse how to live and love once again. In the Book of the Just, Mouse’s soul and humanity is tested once again for the final time. The book is broken into four parts and we get an entire part of the book told from Angelo’s perspective. I enjoyed reading his side of the story as we get to see further the parallels between Mouse and Angelo.

I’ve grown very attached to Mouse throughout the series. She’s both human and magical in her characterization. She’s someone who has enormous empathy and carrying but who’s been hurt and who has lashed out because of that hurt. However, she has an inner guiding light that no matter how hard she tries at times to quench it, it always brings her back to the right path. Even as an immortal she’s the epitome of a human.

Her relationship with Angelo is beautiful. Many times, when you have relationships between humans and immortals, immortal tend to have the upper hand. They have more power by virtue of being an immortal and this can become problematic in those relationship. However, the relationship between Mouse and Angelo is mature and equal in as much as it can be. There is mutual love but more importantly respect between the two. It’s really refreshing to see.

The mythology and theology of the series is incredible. While the basis is Judeo-Christian there’s no preachiness to it. It’s part of the world-building of the story and you can enjoy it for that. In fact, some of the worst people in the books hide behind the façade of religion. The author clearly has an excellent command of theology and interweaves it beautifully throughout the series. It was a pleasure to read about it purely from an academic perspective.

I cannot recommend this book or this series highly enough. I cannot wait for what Dana Chamblee Carpenter has in store for us next.

Overall score 5/5

I just had to keep reading to reach the end. I could not imagine how the author was going to end this unbelievably creative trilogy! I loved it-all of it! Dana Chamblee Carpenter’s Book of the Just (Bohemian Trilogy #3) is mind-blowing! Mouse discovers that her father finally has a son, and Mouse has a brother, but as the reader, I wondered where would this addition take Mouse’s journey. I am truly amazed with the author’s cleverness and knowledge. I found myself nodding my head and agreeing with Mouses’s decisions even with a certain amount of trepidation. In the recesses of my mind, there is always ‘What is her father planning?’ The “gothic fantasy with historical details of 13th-century Bohemia” combined with “Christian mythology”, an incredibly brave female protagonist, and love makes this trilogy a gripping read! My congratulations to Ms. Carpenter! Highly recommended!! 5+ stars.

I received this from JKS Communications for honest review.

I saw this book, and at first I said no. Just from looking at the title, I was thinking to myself, "What kind of churchy book is this? Not my style...". After I read a little about it, and discovered this book was set in medieval times and had a touch of the supernatural mixed in with it, I decided to give it a shot. I am so glad I got this book. I have never felt so emotionally attached to a character ever before than I have with Mouse. I felt like I was right there with her along her journey. I felt like I laughed with her during her happy moments, and cried with her during her lonely, and frightful moments. My heart broke with hers during her heart wrenching moments, and I felt the pain during her tormenting moments. I just could not put this book down. Every twist and turn I was on the edge of my seat, hoping things would turn out for the best for her. I just cannot recommend this book enough. The author is just so brilliant in captivating the reader's thoughts and emotions. It's just such a good book. From one avid reader to another, If you're just not too sure, then just do it. Buy it right now and read it. You won't be disappointed, I promise you.

This is the last in a trilogy and it is some time since I read the last in the series. I received this copy via NetGalley..
What a journey Mouse has travelled. Am I pleased to see the end of the journey? What can I say? These books are not too well known. I feel they need a little more exposure.
A dark medieval world and a search for ancient weapons with the main characters pursued across the world and nowhere left to go. They have to stand and fight. Ancient magic, history and myth which culminate in this final chapter of the battle between good and evil. Mouse’s last stand you could say. Excellent world building and character portrayal.
I would recommend this trilogy but I would say you should read the other books first in my estimation.

Book of the Just is an appropriately thrilling conclusion to this wonderful trilogy. I've rarely rooted for a character more than I rooted for Mouse.

Book three of the Bohemian Trilogy

I assume that most people reading this are already acquainted with Mouse and her lineage.

Introduced in The Bohemian Gospel, Mouse has powers inherited from her demonic father. Still, all she really wants is to live a peaceful, normal life.

This book picks up from the end of the second novel, The Devil’s Bible. In that book, Mouse battles with her father, who is not someone to cross lightly. Left for dead, Mouse has a long, slow recovery. Her father now intends to raise another to do his bidding—her brother, Luc…

Now, Mouse and her paramour Angelo D’Amato follow a series of clues that point the way to a powerful artifact. The Book of the Just could be the very thing they need to defeat her father. They are hampered and chased by the Novus Rishi, lead by a man known as The Reverend. Jack Gray, introduced in the previous volume, works on behalf of this religious cult…

It’s strange sometimes how things work out. I loved the first volume of this series and disliked the second. Now moving on to volume three, I was amazed at the drawing power of the prose.

From the beginning to the monumental climax this book entices the reader into continuing reading. Warning, you may find yourself fighting sleep in order to finish. I give the book four stars

I have to honestly admit that I was not as taken with this book as I was with the other two. I think she spent far too much time in the beginning of the book filling in new readers on things that had happened in the previous volumes. She also seemed to struggle a bit kicking it into gear. However, it did pick up quite a bit as I went along.

Mouse is now helping to raise her younger brother Luc, while father Satan watches over. It's an interesting concept. Has been from the beginning when it was just the daughter of Satan. The real villains in the book are an evangelical minister and his wife who are pursuing the children to control them. Lucifer is just a bit of an anti-villain. I kinda like that one. Kinda fits with what I think is a more realistic drawing of him.

All in all, it is a read worth diving into. Just read the other two books first. Even though she fills you in a bit on what happened, it can't cover the depth you are taken in the other books. The fascinating part of the books is that she also brings to light items in Christianity that most people don't know about (such as the Devil's Bible). It is a fine story full of epic fights, good vs evil and characters that straddle the line between the two. And Mouse is just a very cool character!

I loved the first two books and had high hopes for the final book. I was not let down. This book was everything I wanted it to be and more. I felt Mouse was finally able to get what she deserved in her life, after the crap hand she had been dealt. This woman went through so much, lost everything a person could lose but she still had a light that could not be extinguished. It was a satisfying ending to a series that I absolutely loved! I am dying for whatever this author puts out next!

I loved the Bohemian Trilogy. They remind me a bit of reading an Anne Rice novel. I'm sorry to see them end but I think I will re read them every few years because they are just so good.

*spoilers*

This series has been one of the most wild literary rides of my life. I love how every book had a different vibe--bouncing from the 13th to the 21st centuries, from Europe to America to the Australian Outback--but the characters themselves remained consistent. Books about immortal beings and their moral struggles are in no short supply, but Chamblee-Carpenter managed to come up with an extraordinary new take--Mouse and her journey will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

This is the final book in the trilogy, and definitely the most action-packed, as Mouse and Angelo are chased across the globe by various religious factions, who also happen to be fighting each other. The American evangelical minister and his wife were particularly terrifying, because you know there are actual people like that in the world. Still, great new characters.

I also loved Birhan's character, as well as the developments in Jack Gray's story, although I was disappointed when he died, as it seemed like he was being set up for something bigger. I thought he was preparing to take a stand and either quit the whole thing, leaving the story completely, or join Mouse.

And of course Mouse's father remained as intriguing as ever. (Not gonna lie, I'd dig a whole prequel series about him.)

As for the plot and pacing of the book, I felt it lagged a bit at the beginning--the Australian Outback jaunt seemed a little too much like filler material. Europe is where this story began, and the scenes in Europe--in Prague and Rome--were what held things together.

In addition, the "training" of Mouse's brother surprised me a bit--I thought it would be more of a struggle for her to turn him to the light. I was surprised at how quickly he sided with Mouse over his father. But then again, I can also see the merits of turning that notion on its head--I'm sure many other readers assumed he would be inherently evil from the start. Yet another way to challenge our notions of nature vs. nurture, good vs. evil, etc. (Mouse's dad take note.)

Finally, I found the ending a bit anticlimactic, but then again, like I said above, this series is all about turning assumptions on their heads. Mouse's dad deciding to leave them alone might have signaled a shift in his character--despite his insistence that he's just being "patient." It's the little moments like that--those glimmers of humanity in the darkest times, the darkest characters--that make these books shine.

I've said it before and I'll say it again--- wow, wow, wow!! I was dying to get my hands on this book and finish Mouse's story (although I am so upset that it's over). I adored the twists in this book, loved seeing Mouse fall into her darker side due to her anguish, loved seeing Angelo's cleverness and resolve, and loved loved LOVED Luc and his relationship with Mouse. I adored this trilogy and will be rereading!

She’d brought them to the outback, away from everything, and then pushed them even deeper into the desert, where they’d stumbled across a small Martu community at the borders of Karlamilyi Park.

Published in 2018, this is the final book in the Bohemian Trilogy. The story follows Mouse, a seven-hundred year old woman and daughter of the Devil. Mouse and her lover Angelo are hiding in the desert outback from both her father and the church that wants her as a weapon. Somewhere In the world is a little brother that Mouse has never known but who constantly occupies her thoughts and dreams. Where is he? Is he like her? Mouse may have to sacrifice one of her loves for the other. Which one will she choose and what will that choice mean for her own future?

But Mouse didn’t want to choose anymore. Not what she ate or where she slept or what she wore or whether or not she lived. The only choice that mattered was the one that had peeled her up off the floor and gave her a singular purpose—vengeance. And she didn’t care if it was right or wrong. She didn’t care if she was good or not.

The prose is straightforward and easy to read. It seems simpler in design than the other two books and I honestly don't like some of the plot choices. I'm also uncertain that I like every aspect of the worldbuilding in this book although the "rod and book" were new elements that I did enjoy. There is more emphasis on "blood magic" than in the previous volumes and some new sources of power and enchantment. I found the main characters sympathetic and likable although Angelo's storyline strained credulity at times. Most of the antagonists seemed one-dimensional and stereotypical, which limited their impact in the story and consequently my interest in their roles.

The climax was tense and dramatic but I felt that the choreography in the end wasn't as logical and well-rendered as I hoped. While this is an interesting and entertaining story with fascinating passages, I was disappointed in the narrative execution in comparison to the first two books of the series. Overall it was a series with both strengths and weaknesses but worth a read by fantasy fans.

The Just are three: Driven by compassion. Shaped by humility. Fueled by hope. The Just are one.

I loved the first book in this series, The Bohemian Gospel. It's still one of my favorites. So full of hope, sadness, and want for Mouse to have love and acceptance. I have never felt so much for a character before. Mouse's journey was so full of heart break and sorrow, that your own heart ached for her.

In the second book, The Devil's Bible, you learned a lot about her father, who he really was, and how he tried to manipulate Mouse to become what he's always wanted. The second book wasn't as good as the first, but I enjoyed the time traveling chapters and the new character that was introduced to give Mouse hope again.

The third book, The Book of the Just, took me a ridiculously long time to get through. I kept putting it down for weeks at a time because I was having a hard time really getting into it like I did with the first one. I honestly found a lot of it to be quite boring. I did like the change in Mouse in how she loses herself and almost becomes what her father always wanted her to be- a murderous creature full of rage with no hope left inside her. Her emotions really struggled in this book. Luc was another interesting character, and I enjoyed how Mouse wanted to teach him how to truly live and how your actions, whatever you may do, will always have consequences. She molded him and turned him away from their father.

I found I struggled with this book until basically the last third, which I feel is where it got good and interesting again. A lot of it was quite boring up until Mouse joins Luc and their father. I wanted to finish the trilogy, so I wanted to finish this book, but I will say it was difficult to do so. I will always re read the first book, The Bohemian Gospel, because it will always be one of my favorites, but I'll most likely just shelf The Devil's Bible and The Book of the Just.

So good!!! Read this series! I have so much to say and no idea how to say it.

This book feels like those shows that suck you in for an entire weekend; Wheel of Time, Witcher I'm looking at you.

It is the classic story of good verses evil. The series contains a good deal of religious writing and imagery. Dana Chamblee Carpenter gives beautiful details of the religious items, buildings and locations. It was presented like religious art history and not religion class; I really appreciate that, I love religious art and architecture because of it's beauty. I even added a few new travel destinations.

The writing is superb, Carpenter does an amazing job of setting the scene. More than once I had to take deep breath and remind my self I wasn't actually in the often scary small space.

Though I did not cry; if you are prone to, you will. It's worth it (without spoilers) read it anyway, just avoid crowded areas. If you survived Game of Thrones you can handle this.

Book of the Just by Dana Chamblee Carpenter is the 3rd installment of the Bohemian Trilogy. Mouse is immortal and powerful but has yet to truly accept her powers. She is given a dream where she discovers that she has a brother, something her father has always wanted. She is on the run with her love, Angelo, however, times will begin to change yet again. Angelo and Mouse are having dreams. Something dangerous is coming. Now they must find the only weapons that can help them fight against their enemies.

I have so many mixed emotions about seeing Mouse's journey come to an end (for me as a reader that is, let's be honest characters live on far beyond the last page of a book). Book of the Just perfectly wraps up this absolutely phenomenal trilogy, woven together with lyrical prose and an intimate portrait of characters that make you feel like you know them. An expert mix of paranormal, thriller, and horror, this book had me craving to read the next chapter. I will be recommending this book and series to everyone I know for a very long time.

I really loved the first book in the trilogy, thought it was very original. The second, and especially this one are very well written but had a Da Vinci Code style that I didn't like as much.
Also didn't like that for 700 years of Mouse's life there wasn't anything worth writing about and then all of these things happen in such a short time span that take up two whole books ? Would have loved if the author had kept more of the books in the past making them more historical fiction/fantasy and then kept the present part story for only the ending of this book.
Altogether was a good read.

The first novel was by far the best out of the 3. I really enjoyed the vengeful Mouse in this one... until something changed and she just became beyond infuriating! Some people deserve revenge and I'm glad Kitty and the rev still got what they deserved... and I understand she didn't want to "use her gifts" but she still does anyways and honestly all she would have had to do was command EVERYONE to sleep... infuriating

BLUF: Good end to the trilogy

While I have some quibbles about this series, overall it was well done and a worthwhile read. I think the familiarity with Mouse's father in this book made him out to be a little more "bro", lackadaisical, and generally aloof than I expected for his character. The narrator, once again, had Mouse sounding like she was on the brink of tears. The story was solid and entertaining, a fitting end to an overall good to okay trilogy.

3 stars. This was a very slow start but does pick up after page 100. A lot of the same takes from the past 2 books regarding repetitive violence and a lot of running around. I do feel like this book was disconnected from the first book other than a few nods. The second and the third book in this series were a little bit too early-2000’s-action-movie for my tastes. I’m just happy Mouse was finally happy.

Nothing compares to the first book.

It is rare that the 3rd installment of a trilogy outshines the rest by this much. I am glad that I stuck it out and finished the series, especially since the holes in the 1st book normally would have made me put it down and cut my losses. I enjoyed the very human culmination alongside the reinforcement of Lucifer as a brother angel. Well done.

I absolutely loved this series! A story of love, revenge, forgiveness, shame, family ties & so much more. There's a lot of depth to the story that has a way of touching your heart & your soul. I'm kind of sad to know the series is over (or is it?), but very glad to have stumbled across the Bohemian Trilogy!

I received an advanced copy of this book from JKS Communications. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Book of the Just is a page turner conclusion to the Bohemian Trilogy which completes the journey dash with supernatural elements, mythology, and history.

I haven't read the first two books of this trilogy, although JKS Communications assured me that it can be read as a standalone novel. The novel started with Mouse, together with Angelo searching for a powerful artifact that can protect them against Mouse's demonic father. Prophetic warnings and dreams give both lovers to prepare for what the future holds, but when new cards come into play, they have to decide their last stand.

Plotwise, the story is intriguing and captivating. Although it started quite slow, the battle between good and evil hooked me from the start to finish. I also like the ancient magic and religious elements that were included in the story. The twists and turns were unpredictable and surprising. Also, the world and character portrayal were written brilliantly.

At first, I didn't connect immediately to any of the characters. However, as the story went on, I found myself engaged in Mouse's dilemmas and inner battles. Through her journey, I laughed, I cried and I could feel her pain in each agonizing moment.

Overall, this dark, fantastic journey is a great conclusion to the trilogy. I recommend it to readers who like dark fantasy! 4 stars!
